I have been waiting for someone to make a quality 8" Android tablet, and I think this may be the one:

Seems like an excellent tablet for those of us who love to read magazines, comics, books, etc on a tablet. That said, I am not well versed about hardware and would love opinions on it.

So not worth it
Problem is nobody is going to program for a 4:3 tablet when all the others are not 4:3.

These Android Tablet Apps are optimized for the widescreen all the competition has.

This is like a early 2013/late 2012 flagship tablet. Decent enough. A little late, though. No outstanding qualities about it which makes me wonder what the "Pro" differentiates, unless the aspect ratio is that big a deal.

Edit: That resolution is mighty fine, though! It uses Gorilla Glass 3 so the chances of it using any advanced ultra accurate pen features is low, though.

The beauty of android is you don't program for a specific aspect ratio. Android apps should scale perfectly on this.

...This isn't the nicest looking tablet I've seen. Bezel just seems a little bit clunky, although I could be wrong.

1600x1200 is apparently perfect for reading comics, though, so it could be nice if that's your main priority... Still, with this being (one of) the only 4:3 tablet(s), won't a lot of existing tablet apps look like shit?

edit: welp, I'm wrong about that too. Looks like 1GB ram is the only real issue here, would like to see how this thing looks in person.

Yeah, except when you're making magazines and digital comics you kind of have to commit to an aspect ratio. Since OP stated this was why the aspect ratio was a good thing I felt the comment was a valid one to make. For books, which are just blank pages of text it will indeed be quite nice though.

Besides, even ignoring that for most apps "scaling" would be extra whitespace on the sides or bottom of the screen, not actually filling with extra content. It's not like, for instance, Spotify for Android would suddenly get the vertical layered look of the iPad version on this tablet instead of the single list view it has now.

That is a very good point. Like i said in the OP, I get a bit lost with this stuff, so I am enjoying the discussion. :)

Why?
processors have fanboys?

Can't speak for Tegra 4 but Tegra 3 was garbage and rendered many devices useless after a few months. Why buy something with Tegra anything when no other processor line has as spotty of a history? It's not like nvidia refunded anyone their money for those shit products.

Developing for a specific aspect ratio... does that really happen somewhere?

...I just vomited a bit in my mouth.

For web dinosaurs, older desktop dev shops going mobile and print shops going digital it does. It's as gross as you might think.

The tablet aside from people who really want 4:3 for whatever reason is tad pricy but not bad. The 1GB of RAM kinda kills it though.

Tegra 4 is a top-end mobile processor. Better than Bay Trial, very comparable to Snapdragon 800.

Did the processors have a high failure rate?

I've read the Anandtech review of Tegra 4, I know it's supposed to be a very high performing chip. Early reviews of Tegra 3 weren't outstanding but there was no mention of the crippling memory flaw or whatever the hell it was that ruined many a Nexus 7 / One X.

I'm not saying you should completely write this tablet off, but I wouldn't buy one. Snapdragon 800 is at least as good and Qualcomm has a track record of making smart design decisions in mobile processing. And like others mentioned, the 4:3 screen ratio will be useful for some content but most apps will just be scaled to have extra blank space between buttons and whatnot as most apps are designed with 16:9 usable space.

Ahh definitely a good point with the comics and magazines, I don't use my tablet for these so I'm not sure how they work.

Apps wise, any app that properly adjusts itself for tablets (read: not many) will take advantage of the extra screen space. If you're pointing out that some apps do not have 'tablet layouts' then thats a problem across android itself and isn't restricted to 4:3 ratio devices.
