Liu claimed that they are working with other Chinese AI solutions providers. With them, Huawei has now developed a GPU whose capabilities in AI performance are on par with NVIDIA's A100 GPU. No specific numbers or specifications are provided for this GPU but it is said that the hardware will be very capable and can run large language models such as GPT-3 and GPT-4 with lots of performance at hand.

At the moment, the NVIDIA A100 is only the second-best AI GPU on the market with the top spot going to the Hopper H100 which is in huge demand. The A100 offers 624 TOPs of INT8 compute while the H100 offers 2000 TOPs. If the claim is true, then it is possible that the Chinese market might shift some of its AI demand to domestic GPUs but that remains to be seen. China is one of the largest consumers of AI GPUs from NVIDIA where chips are being sold for huge profits due to incredibly strong demand.

Remember when a few months ago a Chinese tech firm claimed they were making CPUs as fast as Intel and AMD, but then it turned out those CPUs were just Intel CPUs rebranded by that firm.
China has lied plenty of times about their tech capabilities.
I really doubt that Huawei has made GPUs for AI that are as fast as nvidia's best.

Just because they are "banned" from access to those technologies doesn't mean they can cannot just reproduce the facilities. If they have worked with, or had access to, those technologies in the past a "stern warning" from the US isn't going to stop them from reproducing and improving upon the process.

China does not have access to ASML's lithography machines, especially the UV ones.
Without these, it's almost impossible to go to 7nm and lower with decent yields.

This all sounds very unbelievable.

This is currently the fastest Chinese graphics card. And it is significantly slower than a 1060 6Gb.

I'll disagree with this. Those machines used in the fabs are very complicated and difficult to make. You can't just will yourself technology. My past experience in Taiwan fabs tell me that the people there just use the technology and they don't develop much. China would be even less so. All the machinery is western developed and made.

Doubt here too. There is literally only a single company on this planet that can supply the necessary equipment. They don't sell a whole lot of it and you can be damn sure they know exactly where every single unit is at any given moment.

Remember when China was begging the Soviets for Nuclear weapons technology then the Sino Soviet split happened and the Soviets refused? The Chinese managed on their own. It will take time but they have the experience, institutions and knowledge as well as reverse engineering skills to achieve their goals. Nice but the reason why nVidia are a defacto monopoly in the AI-card market is also due to their CUDA ecosystem. Unless Huawei have something similar, they will have a steep uphill battle.

To just have one pop up that competes with TSMC out of the blue is just not possible.

I dont follow smartphones, but I remeber hearing when Huawei phones were promoted a lot years back, they were good quality phones at a good price.

But the ban was due to Canada and US claiming the phones had spy chips in it or some shit. I remember articles where someone would zoom in on the chipset and point to a microscopic bit of metal and claim that's the spy part. lol. Who the fuck knows.

Cutting edge foundaries and the machines inside them are the most advanced technology mankind currently possess, the actual process is literal scifi shit. It would take decades (plural) for someone starting at nothing to make the chips inside your toaster. Even the competing companies that were doing it for decades (Glofo and Intel) can't do it. China most definitely can't just "make their own" on a whim? LOL

No they weren't, Apple and Qualcomm have always lead with mobile SoC's. Huawei couldn't even keep up with Mediatek.

Huawei are notorious for openly stealing Cisco IP and selling basically identical clones for cheap and nearly driving Cisco to bankruptcy. Ever since then Huawei had a target on their backs, the whole 5G spy hardware shit was just an excuse to finally get payback.

Huawei probably just stole the IP for Ampere and will make basically identical clones using their shady front companies to buy semiconductor capacity. Nvidia will have no recourse just as Cisco didn't because you can't tell the government of China to stop stealing.

While I hope its true, I really doubt it though. Honestly, the US basically threw a hissy fit when they saw the Chinese companies competing and advancing a little too well for their liking and basically said no one in the class can play with China anymore. Increased competition in the world market is sorely needed and I don't care if it's from China otherwise the mega firms that have basically cemented their place as the defacto choice will keep throwing around their influence with prejudice.

That being said, there is almost zero chance they are matching nvidia on their intial outing. Nvidia has decades of research and development that got them where they are today, Huawei simply dont have the capacity to match that in such a short time. Even if they managed to steal ips and confidential r&d info they simply dont have access to the leading foundries around the world. I dont doubt they will eventually make ground as they have in most fields but at this point its almost impossible.

I think SMIC has some sort of 7nm process. So could be that plus chiplet design. They probably have a lot of errors and a lot of failure on the node but Chinese government is throwing a lot of money at them so....

That said, have some doubts about performance claims here.
