Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

north boss without any upgrade is a nah?

North was the first boss I tackled - can't recall at this point if I bailed and bought any upgrades from town before actually beating that boss though. Should be doable even at the start. But there isn't any reason for you to beat your head against the boss. Move on to the East or West areas. (East was harder enemy wise, but easy boss, West was easier enemies but harder boss - If I am recalling correctly.)

So I'm thoroughly addicted but also kinda lost

cannotfor the life of me figure out how to get the fourth triangle in the mountain zone or the 3rd triangle in the forest.

I know where the mountain one is, but its blocked off, and the forest one I'm p lost on

Where are people discussing the story, such that it is, of this game?
There was some talk of the story earlier in the thread. The subreddit might have some more active discussion about the story. Don't know if the devs have talked about the story anywhere online.
Any word on the console release. I backed it and chose the ps4 version, but haven't heard when it is expected.
I think summer would be your best bet. They wanted to release the PC version first and then focus on console. PS4/One is being worked on and Wii U is probably not coming anytime soon. Vita also coming as well.
Is this playable with keyboard only? What about a PS3 dual shock?
No. Controllers/game pads are actually preferred. The game should recognize any controller.

Can someone explain me how to get this?

If I reach the location, there's just a dark room with nothing inside, and I think there's a barrier too.

If i recall you must beat the boss of that area first so that the gate inside the dark dungeon will go down and let you proceed

Ok, thanks, I defeated him but I didn't check the area after doing it.
EDIT: You were right, just cleared that area (I think? It was too dark, I hope so anyway).

I'm really having a blast, the game is really really good, just got all keys and modules on zone 1-3, I still need to approach zone 4 (I suppose this is the last one).
But I think some things should be patched out:

-often you are low on health and you die, just to respawn with 1 hit point and zero medipak (if you used them), making even a simple zone a nightmare to clear since you need to perfect it.
-chain dash should be easier to perform. I managed to to 800 dashes by using a keyboard, but with a pad is not so easy to replicate.
-there should be more warp zone. Just one for each area is not enough, since often to collect stuff you are forced to pass zones with a lot of enemies again and again. at least another warp point per location should be enough.
-new cutscenes. Because really, there's only one basically, and it plays after every boss killed. It's awesome, but give us more.
-Steam cloud. Why there's no Cloud support? Really, since there's NG+, many collectibles etc Cloud should be mandatory.

I beat the game little under an hour ago. I loved it! Absolutely loved it. I enjoyed the core gameplay, visuals, setting, music, basically everything was very solid. Although I have maybe one or two concerns with it: The map is very vague and hard to read, that I found it almost useless at times. The second being I really wished the game ran at 60FPS. This core action just begs for that sweet smooth framerate for precise inputs.

I'll definitely give this a NG+ run through though.

I haven't got a chance to play since launch. Seems like a lot of big things were changed... but if I'm reading the thread right they didn't change the problem of respawning with low health? That was literally all they had to do in terms of difficulty imo. It's a super annoying design choice

It was hard to respawn with low health, but I don't see an easy solution. If you could simply refill your health bar by jumping to your death, it'd negate health upgrades and pickups.

Perhaps if you could only checkpoint if you had a near-full health bar, but then response would be incredibly negative.

I look forward to revisiting this game someday, I really loved it.

The number of updates this game gets is kinda annoying - every other day I'll have to download a 400mb update. I know it's not that big (4mb line here), but it really gets in the way every-time I open steam and want to play.

I wouldn't mind if we had notes for each but it's like, one in five gets actual details. Their quality control is fucking slipping as much as I like their game.

Some on the Steam forums said one developer hired on with Ubisoft and Preston is now with Square, I'm guessing their attention to detail is totally screwed combined with the console releases.

Has the Devs said anything on release date for PS4, other than the coming soon when PC release date was announce. Been holding out for the PS4 version.

Lots of updates usually actually spells good quality control to me.

I don't know about the others, but Teddy Dief got a job with Square Enix in Montreal.

Teddy specifically mentioned getting the game to consoles before leaving to square I think. He posted it on his blog.

Quantity != Quality. Obvious yes, but a proper release cycle wouldn't aggravate users so much with constant updates.

I didn't know about the team leaving for other opportunities. Is this it for them then? A one shot affair?

It was always supposed to be a one game thing I think. Heart Machine was never a studio and just Alx.

I never expected anything else other than the game. I didn't even expect them to update the game at all outside of bug fixes.

that makes the game all the more special - and sad to know that this is all we'll ever get to sample from the team :(

i honestly would love more from them.

Who better than Taco Bell to give us the story of heart disease and game design?

Great to see that video though, jokes aside, so thanks for sharing.

Hey, guys! Just started this game, and it's been pretty fun so far. I pressed pause, and noticed there was a co-op mode for local co-op I think. Have any of you guys tried this out? Is it any fun? Now I'm wondering if I should just stop playing this game, and wait until I can play it with a friend.

Just finished it. Definitely my GOTY at the moment. It felt like playing a cross between a Nintendo game (Zelda/Metroid-like exploration) and a Platinum game (Combat system and moves). Everything was on point, the art and sound design, the UI, the combat feedback, the bosses and their patterns, the secrets and the mystery of the world. It's an instant classic for me. It joins Cave Story as one the best 16-bit styled retro indie games. I need it on my WiiU.

This is my GOTY right now as well. I guess the best way I can describe it is that it's "A Link to the Past" crossed with "Dark Souls" and "Journey."

The moody soundtrack combined with the masterful art direction created an atmosphere that pulled me into the world almost instantly; it's a fully realized game world that was a joy to explore. My only complaint is that the map doesn't feature a progression system of sorts that points out what areas you already explored, causing backtracking in some cases to be a bit needlessly cumbersome and an exercise in memory. In the end, though, I never ended up minding it that much since I was always enjoying myself.

I guess my only other "complaint" is that I wish it was a full length game, ALttP style. I pretty much knew that the 4 areas from the get-go was the extent of the game world, but I kept secretly hoping that once I activated all four pillars that it would open up a new section kind of like after acquiring the Master Sword in ALttP.

Having said that, I think part of the game's charm is how concise and contained the game works as a whole by the fact that the 4 areas function as part of a relatively non-linear game world. It's by no means "too short", but just long enough to feel like a complete journey and by far worth the $19.99 in my opinion. I just found myself enjoying the game so much that by the time it was over, I was wishing there was more for me to do since I was having so much fun.

I really hope that they end up making a Hyper Light Drifter 2 (or derivative of the established gameplay somehow) that is longer, just to satisfy my need for more.

Just reserved this for PS4 with that 20% discount. So 11$ seems like a steal for this one. Cant wait for it to be released. PS4 is getting some amazing indies this year.

I would like to know this as well. Co-op kind of determines which platform I'll get this on.

Man this game is superb. Completed the east and north areas, now on to west. I'm hoping you get a map at some point that shows the location of missing upgrade pieces, but I kind of doubt it. Already found 5 tablets and a bunch of keys. Also found
the place where the tablets are gathered and the teasing chest.

One annoyance I have is the slight choppiness when you move the camera/dash. Is this because of the locked 30 fps, does everyone get this? It is a bit annoying. It's fine if you stay in one screen, but as the scrolling starts, so does the slight judder. I put fraps on and my framerate is a constant 30, so I'm just assuming now everyone gets this.

I had this problem. After they added an option for borderless windowed, the problem went away using that setting.

I tried that setting, it's better but not completely gone.

Read some of the earlier pages, some of you guys are fast! I'm at 9 hours and I just beat the Samurai boss, rounding out the 3 major areas. Did find a lot of secrets on the way, but I doubt I'll be going for 100% with this map. Now onwards to the south.

The chain dash is weird: I've tried switching over to kb/m and for me it's more reliable than the controller...

Not sure if you've realized this but the timing for the chain dash changes for the first four or five dashes. Starts relatively slow and gets faster. Once you're chained four in a row, the timing remains steady.

I know, the timing is like this 'revving up' thing, but I can still pull it off better with the left mouse button.
