I don’t get gamepass… I want to own my games am I the only one here?

"I don't get Netflix… I want to own my movies am I the only one here?"

"I don't get Spotify… I want to own my musics am I the only one here?"

Still cant understand the appeal?

I wouldnt have discovered many movies and musics that I love if there were no Spotify and Netflix

And I buy bluray discs of my favorite movies. Just like I do with games that I love.

Netflix and Spotify are awful though and the level of quality has been tumbling ever since they started dominating their respective industries.

I'd be pretty bummed out if Lords of the Fallen and Katana Zero were with me in perpetuity.

Not about ownership for me. I just don't have the time to make it cost-effective.

Almost all of my Xbox time is in Halo, AOE2, and Skyrim. Playstation is where I play all purchased games, and between the two there just isn't time for a massive game library.

So I bought AOE2, bought MCC (Infinite is FTP and just crossed its highest player count in a year and a half!), and Skyrim. Will keep Gamepass Core for online play, but that's it.

You're also preaching to the choir.

A lot of us, who enjoy purchasing games and have wanted to own their games understands this. I see why other people do it. I did it for Gears 4 and Halo Infinite. I didn't have to buy either game. I'm satisfied by that choice.

I miss the days of picking up the latest Squaresoft game and none of those exist. It's all retro or inspired by the classics. I also buy a lot better games now days besides JRPGs.

More like, I don't even have time to play the games I do own and bought because I know I want to play them. When do I have time to aimlessly browse a catalog of thousands of games? Let alone actually play them?

"I don't get Netflix (or insert any other streaming service here), don't you want to own your movies/TV shows?"

"I don't get Spotify or Apple Music, don't you want to own your albums?"

It's the inexorable march of progress. The good news is that you still have the option of buying what you want despite the existence of those other services.

Edit: I didn't notice someone posted the same thing a page back. Oops.

See topic It's great for testing games but that's all for me. I guess it's good for low income players

It saves me a lot of $ and allows me to play games I would normally skip.

In this day and age you don't own games anyway. Like what are you going to do with a Destiny 2 disc ?

I have my reservations about the gamepass model in the long run.

But ignoring that I don't really mind not permanently owning games that much. Once I'm done with games I rarely replay them, and when I do it's usually 5+ years later.
I don't have Gamepass but to take Ps+ extra as an example I played games like Demon Souls Remake, Returnal and Guardians of the Galaxy through it. If in 5+ years I get the urge to replay any of them and I don't want to pay for a subscription I'll probably just be able to buy them for like $15.

Made for kids who have an endless stream of allowance (and doesn't have the will to save up for games) if they can create another netflix/blockbusters scheme.. it be mighty lucrative.

No.
They want to brainwashing you to think only digital and not owing nothing is good for you. No wonder we have people parroting the same thing over and over, as is some kind of cult.
lol no, if anything the "I need to buy and own every piece of media I consume and anybody who disagrees is brainwashed" people are the cult.

Meanwhile the rest of us are over here just trying to get the most variety of entertainment for our $, instead of buying and hoarding shit we might only use for 20 hours total, just because of the principle of it.

The level of nihilism and apathy on display in this thread sure is something.

But I guess that's precisely why we get treated the way we do by publishers/developers these days. If we say nothing really matters and that we don't care about whether or not something is worthy of permanence then why should they care about what they create?

I like it and don't care about owning my games as I generally move on from a game and don't go back. Sold off all my physical games about 10 years ago and now totally digital.

I understand the collector mentality though and honestly it's a terrible time for it with all the patches and missing content that comes from going physical these days.

I don't use game pass as I do play games longer these days. Hell I'll play souls games for years.

But at some point I'll never touch them again. The same with all my old games in tubs in the garage. I'm am willing to bet a lot of people don't care about keeping games forever.. they just want to beat them then move on to the next… and I can understand that.

How artforms are lost 101.

You aren't wrong (maybe a touch hyperbolic) but they aren't wrong either. I bet I could go through my largest game libraries (Steam, GOG, and PSN) and be perfectly fine if I didn't own 80% of those titles. That percentage is going to vary depending on how judicious you are with your purchases, but I'd guess you could come up with a substantial percentage. These subscription services and Valve's refund policy let you kick the tires on things you are interested in without fully committing to them.

Did you ever saw people who loves physical saying that "digital needs to dissapear"? Both physical and digital can coexist, I'm strongly in favor of physical but it doesn't mean I don't have a digital games here and there. This is a stupid thing that totally came from digital freakos that keep parroting either strongly or subtly, don't pretend is otherwise.

Meh this has been a contentious topic for the last couple of years and you know it. You know you aren't the only one.

You just want validation for it.

I don't like GP either, but it's not about "ownership" to me, but about not being milked on a monthly basis and being forced to a catalogue I didn't choose nor curate myself. I also dislike being permanently "on the edge" or pressured if one particular game I'm interested in is about to leave the service or not, and the overall culture of "fear of missing out" these types of services promote.

I buy my games digitally and "a la carte", on discounts, only the ones I care about and will 100% focus on next.

So uh, buy your games then? I've been a GamePass subscriber for years and have still bought plenty of games. I've even bought numerous games that were in GamePass after they leave or if I want to play them on other platforms.

Also I don't get why subscribers are always pegged as poor or "lower budget" 😆 What a weird flex. Oh man you spend more on games that mostly suck nowadays, what an accomplishment.

? What are you even talking about? This thread is about buying games vs paying for a subscription service, not digital vs physical. And nobody is saying that your ability to buy games should be taken away.

So I got my free month and so far this past weekend I've played/tried out…

Starfield
Lies of P
Redfall
TMNT Shredders Revenge
Signalis
High on Life
Warhammer Darktide

Intend to play/try

Sniper Elite 5
Wo Long
Like a Dragon: Ishin
Atomic Heart
Powerwash Sim
Everspace 2
Tunic
Scorn
Amnesia The Bunker
Gotham Knights
Plague Tale Requiem
Sea of Stars

I prefer buying and owning my games, but I will always lap up a free or cheap promo for Game Pass as it allows me to play a shit ton of games that are on my wishlist.

I couldn't imagine subscribing to GP (or PS+), but popping in every so often has been beneficial for me.

Oh, and GP gives a 20% discount on buying games, so since I'm no longer buying Starfield I'll likely wind up spending that credit I had on a game or two.

There's a tiny but very noisy minority, some of which are probably Microsoft influencers, who scream about Gamepass. The reality is that most people still want to buy and own their games and the sales numbers reflect that.
*30 million Microsoft influencers enter the chat

This is not an either or situation.

demigod demigod look who's back. I missed your emojis

Maybe I just want to see the world burn.
I understand you're just expressing your preferences, and not condemning anything here, but I gotta ask: do you think people should just not use subs and go back to buy-before-you-try everything? What about the used market and physical rentals? Also, how do you feel about digital/physical games?

I own 160 games (on just xbox) according to the 'owned games' filter on my library, while being subbed to game pass. Probably one third of them are things I bought which were on game pass at one time or another.

It's all gravy.

Damn man how quickly are you playing them lol

The hand wringing never ends, lol. Literally nobody is required to choose between buying games or subscribing to game pass but here we are again with people posting boot to the head memes. You guys are a riot.

I'll never understand why people like the OP have a hard time grasping the fact that you can actually do both…..

Jeez….. it's not one or the other you know? Why does this even need explaining?

I own 780. The result of going digital since X360 days. And I still sub. and I still buy new games ( armoured correct 6 being my most recent)

The OP seems to have lost the plot.

Honestly at this point in my life, I don't care as long as I still have the option to own (to whatever that extent may be, such as Steam). Work + kids take too much of my time I have a growing list of backlog. Sister works for Twitch so I'm constantly being gifted steam wallet codes I don't know what to buy with. By the time I get around to some things, it's on game pass or at a steep discount. The last few months all I've been able to play is D4, BG3 and CyberPunk. Still trying to make time for Starfield, which I'm totally fine playing on gamepass and if I want will pick it up later on steam if the mod community really picks up and improves.

I don't get GP as well. I only play handful of games and do not have much time anyways. You can always buy games later at cheaper price with all DLC as well. Free games they offer was enough IMO.

If you watch movies or TV shows do you generally buy them or use a streaming service?

Personally I use a streaming service and then buy the ones I really like and want to support. Same thing with Xbox.
Compare games(10+ hours) with movies are stupid.

If you work have a life. Subscription for games doesn't make sense.

When you buy a game you do not own it. You own a disk and a license to a piece of software on a particular piece of hardware. You don't really own it. And it can be revoked from you for many reasons.

Having a physical disc is useless nowadays. We have to download Gb of patches to play the game.

We play older games on emulators with updated roms/exes/etc on NAS at home.

personally, i've only ever been interested in owning games i'd be replaying. & that wasn't nearly all of'm. & game pass would've been perfect for ll of those...

Yeah, not a fan of subscriptions either. Don't like them for games, movies, or music. I just like owning my stuff and being able to play whatever it is years down the road if I want to without any nonsense. I also think services like GamePass encourage worse games to be made, but that's a different discussion.

Not true. Most cartridges require little to no patches, and not all discs need patches.
