I don't find "Friends" that funny, but it sure represents the time period

That's why I watch reruns. The clothes, the hairstyles, the lingo. It all makes for the perfect escape to my high/middle school days. That's why I watch the first Fast and Furious often, too. Paul Walker's hairstyle just screams late 90s early 2000s.

I sometimes need to escape.

I thought the jokes were dated as fuck and I didn't want to watch it anymore after years and years without watching it.

But I saw like 2 or 3 seasons last year and I thought it was so refreshing to be able to watch a sitcom with zero virtue signaling. It actually became funnier because of that.

We live in the stupidest of times.

So, veredict, I do like Friends, but Seinfeld is the goat to me.

I didn't find Freinds funny back in the '90s. I always thought Fraiser was the better sitcom.
I don't find it LOL-funny either but I guess it's just the cast that made it memorable for me.

I never even liked it when it was still running, but it definitely is a great piece of history that represents the era pretty well.

Always liked Friends, and will always like.
At least the first 4 or 5 seasons.

After that it gets insufferable...

Also, when you are in that age group (mid twentysomething) in the late 90ies it reminds you of a lot of things that you experienced yourself a bit.

I watched friends like 2 years ago but i was done after 3-4 seasons, people who compare this thing to seinfeld are probably people who think that skinny bitch kate moss is the most beatiful woman on planet earth.

I liked Seinfeld and Frasier. Friends is the show that I remember all the ladies watching. Whenever I do see this show, it makes me sad to realize where we were at in the mid-00's vs where we've gone and the velocity at which we've gone there.

I hated the canned laughter and Ross so much.

I liked it back in the day. It has it's moments and I like the casting and appreciate the colorful settings. But the humor can feel forced and pretentious. I've also become a bit of a snob for things that have such massive mass-appeal.

It’s always been my wife’s favorite show and about 5 years ago I ended up watching it for my first time with her and I really loved it. Wish I had’ve always watched it.

Never watched friends but I’m right there with you on the fast and furious. Also part of the reason I list 2 Fast 2 Furious as one of my faves out of the franchise.

Was never a huge fan myself. Watched loads of the show, obviously, because you couldn't escape it for a few years. Some of the jokes & situations were funny, but I never got it the way other people did.

I imagine going back to watch an episode or two would probably be a breath of fresh air these days. It was made before wokeness took over the world, after all.

it seemed like a bunch of rich people slumming it

i know it wasn't, they had jobs and struggled but it was so far removed from my own experiences that i couldn't see it any other way

I dont remember seeing any of them work, but i personally dislike the show. Frasier I liked a lot.

Are you serious? Ross at the museum, Chandler in his various office jobs, Rachel working at the coffee shop, Bloomingdales, Phoebe playing guitar at the shop and her massage business, Joey's auditions and acting gigs...It was called Friends not Coworkers

you can't put a price on sparks
it certainly would be more of an "observation" piece nowadays since it captures that era pretty well, but I never really thought it was that funny either, especially when it was on.

All you have to do is go back a few years to get to no VS in shows. NBC Thursday night line-up: The Office, Community, 30 Rock, Scrubs, MNI Earl, ParksnRec... There was some PC stuff, but often it was made fun of.

Loved watching it when I was a kid and maybe like 3-4 years ago I decided to re-watch it again and the shit is my chicken soup. My comfort blanket. I love it. I get criticisms (most, not the PC ones) but it’s enjoyable fun if you can get invested in the characters.

I've never found Seinfeld funny. Lots of canned laughter and people making funny faces but there aren't any jokes in it.
are you sure you are not talking about the big bang theory?

the only one who consistently make funny faces in seinfeld is kramer and his physical humor is still unmatched today.

maybe you don't like comedies with very bad people doing shitty things and with almost zero horizontal plot?!

canned laughs are bad, i give you that.

Watching clips of the show without the laugh track is very interesting - it's just a group of assholes with no interest in anything outside of their own gratification.

Like the final episode is just so perfect. I hated it at the time, but I always look back at it in awe now that Larry David had the balls to do it this way. It was the only way.

I do not know how, or under what circumstances the four of you found each other, but your callous indifference and utter disregard for everything that is good and decent has rocked the very foundation upon which our society is built. I can think of nothing more fitting than for the four of you to spend a year removed from society so that you can contemplate the manner in which you have conducted yourselves.

I don't know why we like them so much. The performances were great and there were some great lines and deliveries, but it's interesting to note most people laugh with these protagonists and not at them.

I only really watched friends because it was such a "girls" show and girls would always watch it. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't obsessed with it either. Like OP said, it brings you back to a good period in time. It also reminds you of times with your Friends. It was a winning combo.

Seinfeld is the greatest though. The characters were outstanding, and we're not just talking the main 4. The supporting and recurring cast such as Puddy, The Costanzas, Newman, Steinbrenner, Banya, and on and on. The situations were hilarious. It was just too good. I'm trying to give Curb a chance as we speak. The humor is different, yet the same, which is good. The characters are no where near as likeable though.

To be honest, I never saw much praise for Frasier. I'm surprised to see that and am wondering if I missed out.

i don't think it was meant to be absolutely hilarious, but rather more of just a good time with great characters you like to be in the presence of

during the no internet days when i was a little kid in elementary school it was a great source of entertainment

ross is the funniest motherfucker on that show

but the GOAT of sitcom entertainment remains everybody loves raymond

Friends isnt awful, theres just so many better sitcoms of that era. People always want to put it up against Seinfeld for whatever reason, but Seinfeld is way outside of Friends' weight class.

For instance, Friends is way better than like Dharma and Greg, Will & Grace, Spin City, Step by Step, etc

However, it shouldn't really be mentioned in the same breath as Seinfeld, Frasier, Roseanne, Married With Children, Everybody Loves Raymond, Drew Carey Show, etc.

Friends is like Home Improvement, Family Matters, Full House tier. Not awful, but not something I'd ever wanna revisit either.
