I don't find "Friends" that funny, but it sure represents the time period

Great example. WHERE IS THE JOKE?

I watched it like everyone else back when it was popular, and yeah, not that funny. But it sure was a big thing.

Imagine what it would seem like to watch it in 50 years. Whoa boy. :p

Seeing the love for Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond warms my heart. Two extremely consistent and hilarious sitcoms.

What was the one where that blue collar ccouple squatted in the wife's white collar sister's backyard guest house and it was like lol we all have babies. Dudes name was Mike and the white collar guy was Greg

Never got super into friends at the time really, and never have since. Seinfeld, Frasier were in separate leagues as most mentioned.

I’d put it behind Fresh Prince, Home Improvement, Wings (been years since watched, but always felt it was underrated) minimally.

90's up to late 2000's
Same with music.
We go into the next decade knowing that the 2010's was a shit show with no defining qualities other then extreme social justice and they had to out do themselves at the end of the decade

It’s crazy how much I won’t miss this decade. Just a miserable slog all the way though. No really fun or exceptional culture or works. Everything sanitized. No humor allowed. Everything getting shittier by the day. It goes on and on.

This decade could blink out of existence and nobody would care.

Frasier seems to get a lot of respect these days, but it's cool to hate on Raymond for some reason. The writing and performances on that show are stellar. I often tell people how much I love it and they scoff.

People are nitwits.

The cool thing about Ross is, he always had a style, and haircut that transcended time. You could go look at a picture of him from season 1 or 2, but you wouldn't be able to tell what year it is.

Friends is ok. Some of the humor is pretty solid. The emphasis the show places on romance ("Ross and Rachel") always put me off it a bit.

I only really watched friends because it was such a "girls" show and girls would always watch it. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't obsessed with it either. Like OP said, it brings you back to a good period in time. It also reminds you of times with your Friends. It was a winning combo.

Seinfeld is the greatest though. The characters were outstanding, and we're not just talking the main 4. The supporting and recurring cast such as Puddy, The Costanzas, Newman, Steinbrenner, Banya, and on and on. The situations were hilarious. It was just too good. I'm trying to give Curb a chance as we speak. The humor is different, yet the same, which is good. The characters are no where near as likeable though.

To be honest, I never saw much praise for Frasier. I'm surprised to see that and am wondering if I missed out.
Don't forget bobby saccamano.

It represented what I hated about Gen-X, not being able to look bad. Most situations were lies added to lies just to look good.

Friends is OK. I wouldn't sit down and watch the whole thing, but my wife loves it so I'd watch it on and off in the background while I did other things. I can appreciate that a lot of people liked it and connected with it in a lot of ways even if I never got that feeling from it. It still holds up today which is a sign of a great TV show. I get the same feelings in that regard about Seinfeld. That show still holds up today and I absolutely despise shows that uses a laugh track, but Seinfeld is so good, still funny, and easily watchable despite it being from the 90s, that it doesn't even matter.

I enjoyed it quite a bit as a kid. I'd be more curious to see how it holds up if I could stomach the laugh-track. It's too distracting. Not that I'm all that interested, but I'd be curious if they allow you to mute the laugh tracks when they do crazy box-sets for the hardcore fans.

I remember liking Friends more than Seinfeld back then mostly because I can't really relate to some of the ways the characters behave in Seinfeld. I mean I know they're suppose to be negative examples and all but I just don't like it that much with the way it's presented, no matter how good the show itself actually is. same with ASIP. if they're more exaggerated like Married With Children, which I love, I would like it much better.

Your move, Chandler Bing.
Friends was kinda funny. worth it at least for the hot babes.

also i saw this when it aired live. at the time i was like "They are ripping off 'Do the Bartman!'"

sure Family Matters is great, but at what cost!?

My sister was obsessed with Friends back in the day, and she still watches it. It's definitely "comfort TV" (as most old sitcoms are), and I see the appeal if you were part of the casts generation. It's a product of it's time, but I knew plenty of guys/girls in my college years (2010's) who still watched Friends.

If a young person watches it today, I'm sure a lot of the 90's jokes will fly over their heads, and I'm also sure they will barely relate to the seemingly impossible situation of those characters : 20-something that has their very own apartment in the city, lounges around coffee shops all day, barely works but somehow pays the rent with no debt, no "need" for smartphones or social media, etc. Even the premise of having a tight-knit circle of friends that you see everyday is just... magical. People don't/can't really do any of that stuff in 2020 lol.

I'd say Seinfeld takes all those "simple, easy, privileged life" ideas to the extreme, but that's why it's so funny. Kramer bursting into Jerry's unlocked apartment without even knocking every episode is peak "90's next door neighbor/best friend" material. It's definitely hard to call anything with a laugh track "timeless", so take it or leave it, there will always be a group of people who enjoy classic sitcoms. Me included.

I always preferred the Drew Carey show to Friends...maybe because of all the Ohio references. And honestly, I can't identify with the characters in Friends...I prefer characters that are more every-day, like the ones in Drew Carey and "King of Queens". And the musical opener was much better than the "Friends" imho.

I loved Friends (still do) (will watch again in 5-10 yrs or so)

Didnt watch Seinfeld

Frasier came off as pompous (i was young didnt like the decor/settings was too dark. And those 2 look like pervs)

Roseanne was nice too watch, but i didnt remember much of it.

Married with children was atrocious. Everyone came off dusty, but it was one of the first sitcoms i believe? Or it was a big deal at the time.

One thing that was f’ed up about friends is the Rachel x Joey part. Dude she is having BB and Joey and her is going to be a new pair?

When I watch that show now I see a bunch of gender, gay, and race jokes that would be attacked relentlessly today. And the show was completely harmless. It’s a good representation of how over-sensitive society is now.

I guess it was before my time, but I have given it multiple chances, trying the best rated episodes, and could never get into it myself. The only thing I liked about it was watching young Courtney Cox and Jennifer Anniston prance around.

I dunno about that. I know 3 girls in their mid 20s who said that Friends is their favorite show ever since finding it on Netflix.

I used to find friends funny back in the day, but now my sense of humour has grown with me. I do find it pretty cringy though.

Mind you, would still watch to see Jennifer Aniston smuggling huge peanuts. :messenger_savoring:
