I Got Makai Kingdom Thread

I GOT IT! LOLZ! Great so far, I love the concept, and the marriage of Phantom Brave mechanics and Disgaea's superior story telling!

Got the art book too!

I live in Canaduh so it has yet to be released here, prolly by tomorrow. Ebgames.com also offers the artbook as a pre-order bonus, so I hope that applies to their stores here and that I get that book as well since I pre-ordered the game months ago.

I want to buy Nocturne, but I can't find it anywhere! So I may get this instead. Will be my first Nippon Ichi game!

This is probably the best one to start with honestly.

It has the best parts of the two best games released for PS2 currently. Phantom Brave and Disgaea are also worth picking up.

It rocks. I picked up the double jump guide too, since I like their guides, though I probably won't use it until I get to the end of the game or finish it, since I want to explore the game on my own.

The art book's nice, too; alot of rather famous artists in gaming and anime circles. NI's got a following.

With a little luck, I should be finished with it and Atelier Iris before DDS2 comes out.

=P order directly from Atlus' site. $54 + $3 S&H. They didn't mention it on the site, but I also got the soundtrack cd with my copy. The only problem is that it's mail order only.

When I ordered a SMT:N manual and OST from Atlus two weeks ago (my used copy was just cover and disc in a case), I noticed that the game itself is now sold out.

Where do you live? Search the inventories of Gamestop's near you, that's how I found my copy:
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=938922

Preordered my copy a week ago, and today I received the game sans the artbook. Did gamestop.com made a mistake or is the artbook shipped seperately ?

Anybody else preordered from gamestop.com ?

MAF, return to Robocop NOW !!!

You have no right to play this godly game before you finish your chores :lol

Edited : Oh and finish Warriors of might and magic while you are at it. (mixed them I know sry)

Yeah, the Atlus direct website is sold out. Some here have mentioned ordering direct from Nippon Ichi; I've never done that so I don't know how. Or you can go to a Gamecrazy and have them special-order it.

Bah you bastard *shakes fist*

must...play...

Damn you for starting this thread!

I've been trying real hard to resist buying this game. I have too many games to play right now. Then I hear about a sale at Outpost, and now this thread comes along, reminding me of how awesome NIS is. I loved Disgaea, mainly because of its story and cast of whimsical characters. Phantom Brave was also solid, but I never played La Pucelle.

So does anyone believe this game will become hard to find and expensive like Disgaea? Or should I just wait for a price drop like I did with Phantom Brave? If it's likely to become rare I'll go ahead and pick it up.

Just buy it. If you loved Disgaea for its universe and characters Makai will be like a welcome return home to your mom and her mashed potatoes and ham and gravy. Plus it has some elements of Phantom Brave which made the gameplay pretty solid. BUY!

I'm not planning on buying this one, but for the sake of GAF I'll monitor the prices. I've been able to save a number of people grief by posting alerts when Atelier Iris, Riviera and DDS went out of stock at Amazon, and I'll be keeping tabs on Makai as well.

Speaking of which, Atelier Iris is back in stock.

I disliked Phantom Brave, but thankfully, Makai Kingdom is much better, at least so far. I got the strategy guide, and while the content is great, I wish doublejump would make their guides regular size or at least able lie flat.

The little guides rock!

LETS MAKE THIS GAME SELL OUT AT AMAZON GUYS! WHY SO FUCKIN CHEAP WHILE ALTEIR ARIS OR WHATEVER IS SELLING OUT>!!?!?!

I got it earlier today.

Didn't play too much, but it rocks so far. Seems like the best parts of Disgaea and Phantom Brave married together. Sweet.

A) It's a joke.

B) Phantom Brave and La Pucelle both went down to a 20 dollar price point at one point or another, I highly doubt Makai Kingdom will go the route of Disgaea unless N1 produced an extremely small quantity (which I highly doubt).

C) I already have Star Ocean.

How is the artbook? I wasn't going to buy this until later since I haven't finished N1's other games yet.. but if the artbook is good enough maybe I can be suckered into paying full price.

My copy came in yesterday from N1. The package had the game, the artbook, and the decal.

The artbook is good. It's 40 pages long and contains various artwork from several of the artists. It even includes some of Takehito Harada's rough drafts which are my favorite part of the artbook. Good stuff. Haven't gooten a chance to play the game. This weekend though.

Damn, 38 bucks sounds tempting but I spent my big wad of cash a few months ago and I only have enough money set aside for Grandia III and DDS2 =(.

How 'bout some more gameplay impressions?

Specifically:

1. What are the possibilities for anal-retentive character management--unlocking new classes, tweaking stats and items, etc.?
2. Random dungeons? How are they?
3. Does the game seem potentially exploitable or broken?

For the questions:

1.) Tweaking. If you like tweaking, you want phantom brave. That is the ultimate. If you dont have that, get it. Makai Kingdom has a good bit of tweaking, but not nearly as much. Yet it has more than Disgaea.

2.) Not sure if ive got to the part with the true random dungeons tho. The HAPPY DUNGEONS however are outside the story arc and full of great items and challenges. Happy Dungeon 2 kicked my ass earlier today. Thankfully I saved!

3.) well im not far enough to tell if its broken, but I think sporks was saying its pretty hard to make one uber mage, and that most of the character classes are pretty even. I was thinking of making an army of accountants at some point myself.

Well the story so far is fantastic.

*minor spoilers*

Basically youre this badass god who goes on a short quest to stamp out a prophecy that his kingdom is gonna be destroyed. He's the MOST BADASS OVERLORD AROUND. However in the struggle he has to bind himself to a book. Which makes him unable to do anything. So all these other overlords gather around to 'help him out' They're all extreme personalities which is hilarious. So how can the overlords kingdom return to him in book form? Well they can write wishes in him (the book) and they come true. Without hands he has the other overlords write the wishes, but as the story continues more and more problems crop up from this.

How can he honestly believe anyone wants to help him out. Well Mickey probably does but thats something youll figure out on your own.

In battle you summon characters you create from items found in your travels. Rocks, trees, whatever. So finding good items on a map is key. Making one 'run around character with high mv is a good idea. Unlike phantom brave however once you summon them they are around until they are killed. The catch being if your book, the overlord, gets hit it wont do him any damage, but it removes any chance of score bonuses and hurts everyone for hp. EVIL! There's also areas within areas that can be unlocked. Plus there's new things like summoning buildings and vehicles/weapons into battle to serve various purposes.

All in all the gameplays toned down from Phantom Brave which should make it seem less daunting but it IS more advanced than the Disgaea system, The story is a bit more entertaining than Phantom Brave which should keep the Disgaea fans.

So buy it or I will overlord your FREAKIN FACE OFF!

1. There are new classes you can unlock, you can create "ultimate" characters(chars with tons of skills\weapon masteries) as well with transmigration.

2. They are random stages that have random stages in them. They are random on top of random hahaha. really nice items can be found here, but they cost a considerable bit of mana to create.

3. The game is exploitable, however the way to go about it isnt simple or quick like in phantom brave. The method outlined in the strategy guide takes alot of work and you need to atleast get to the end of the story to really get started. For those who dont know ill just say it requires Hammers and a type of building (name i forget) that gives 50% extra xp.

The AI reacts much like in phantom brave although there arent as many enemies that will steal your shit now. For some reason prinnies will always throw their weapons off the map. This can be trouble sometimes as they will unlock parts of the map before you are ready. But the AI is definitely less insane in this one, and a little bit more cruel. More often then not they will aim for your healer\mages and kill them rather swiftly. The classes have been balanced really well this time.

Ah, hell--ordered from Outpost.com for $39.99, the first time I've paid more than $20 for a game in 2005.

Thanks for the answers, MAF and sp0rsk.

The story mode falls short (literally) of disgaea, there are a few more LOL moments(the vegetable chapter is hilarious). I'd say gameplay wise its their best yet. I think what they have done with the random stage sections is really cool. Ive played the game quite a bit but i dont feel like ive really hit the meat of the game yet. I havent even begun exploring the possibilities with buildings and mecha yet. It's still really fun and hey, its actually challenging sometimes!

This is a really shitty blurb. I apologize. haha

I guess I was lucky that the thread about rare games got me to order when I did. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up. When I called before my order the CSR said then had plenty of copies so I just assumed and became an ass.

My copy shipped from NIS won't be delivered till Monday. I decided not to bother with local stores since they seem to be hit or miss on smaller releases, but having it shipped from the west coast to the east does drag things out a bit. =/

It's the possibility that this might actually have better gameplay than Disgaea that makes me interested. Frankly, I couldn't care less about the storyline, since it's all about the random dungeons in these games for me anyway.

It's definitely more a pure strategy RPG than Phantom Brave -- there's not a lot of early tweaking/twinking that can be done to allow you to power through levels. (No bottlemail or title abuse.) Like sp0rsk said, the twinking comes after you've beat the game once.

The AI is a lot more aggressive than it is in Phantom Brave, and targets mages/healers more avidly. Usually, I don't invite them until later in the battle, after one of my tanks has tossed Zetta out of the line of fire and mages can be summoned near him without any risk.

Structures are a cool addition, since you can pack 'em with troops, invite them, and everyone who emerges from gets their bonus (Atk Up, +50% gold et al). Enemies aggressively target structures, too, so it's a good idea to evacuate your units as soon as you invite them.

Unlike PB, characters now equip items/accessories, and you don't have to "raise" items in terms of Exp/Mana. There's no Confine system to timeout characters, and the game is back to Disgaea-style turns instead of PB's speed-based phase system (cry). It feels like a much more orthodox SRPG than Phantom Brave.

All in all, I think I still prefer Phantom Brave just for its insane depth and customization -- Makai Kingdom has less unit types and nothing comparable to the title/fusion systems -- but I think Makai Kingdom is a better choice for folks who aren't as big into hardcore twinking and want a nice, challenging SRPG that doesn't expect you to pull crazy character management tricks to progress. I think folks daunted by Phantom Brave will find Makai Kingdom a lot more accessible and a little more in line with traditional SRPGS.
