You don't have to be a bigot to vote Trump. I think that it could be fatal for anti-Trumpers to insist that all Trump voters are bigots, as it won't allow them to address the actual concerns of people who aren't racist but may be inclined to vote for Trump anyway.

Yep, this really scares me. If his supporters only are met with hyperbole and endless accusations of racism, they're going to grow in numbers.

It seems like it's too difficult and complex for some people to understand that this political movement is about more than racism. Just shouting it down that way isn't going to work, because that's just a small part of it.

My biggest fear is that simplistic but well meaning lefties are going to shout and shame low information voters into protest voting for Trump. Cue the apocalypse.

Met up with my family for lunch and a movie yesterday, and my stepdad kept talking about how corrupt the Clintons are and how they think that the rules don't apply to them, especially after Bill met with Loretta Lynch. He said Trump was looking better and better. His reasoning is that Congress would rein him in and prevent him from doing crazy stuff.

I told him that I don't like Hillary either, but I'd rather vote for a punch to the gut than for someone to chop off my balls. People who think that Hillary is corrupt so they'll vote Trump can't grasp that Trump would be just as and even more corrupt. He hasn't even held public office and he has a mountain of red flags that point to potential corruption with his shady charities and rampant lies.

My supervisor months ago mentioned that Hillary has "blood on her hands" because of Benghazi. I like my job, so I didn't say anything, but Trump has literally talked about committing war crimes by killing terrorists' families. There's a big difference between fucking up in Benghazi and actively saying that you want to kill the families of enemy combatants.

Bottom line is that some people have a hatred for Hillary that has been cultivated for nearly two decades. They're so blinded by her hatred of her that they would vote for someone unequivocally worse in every way.

So if supporters of a racist agenda are called racist, they will become more racist? And their friends will join them?

The kids glove approach that some of you are offering up is insane to me. The same people who know very well just why they are going to vote for Trump are the same ones who will be your boss, your kid's teacher, or running for mayor of your town.

Hate and fear is already becoming more mainstream and acceptable. We can't just be quiet and polite while it gets to the point where it is the norm.

This is pretty much what happened with Brexit. Many people assumed "Remain" would win no matter what.

But some people saw an influx of Eastern European immigrants that they assumed were taking their jobs. And another group rightly identified a large amount of unintegrated Muslim immigrants as a problematic.

Those people were shamed as racists or xenophobes or idiots. This further pushed moderates into the Leave camp since any potential anxieties they had were dismissed and stigmatized by supposed liberals who only see things as black-and-white or "oppressor vs oppressed."

Then Leave wins and you have a global clusterfuck.

Truth hurts? And it's funny how you're acting like this bigoted thoughts just happened in a bubble. Racism is alive and well, sorry the oppressed are tired of coddling you. Trying to make it seem like folks for leave had some kind of intentions other than xenophobia is laughable, not like leaving was a boon for the economy.

Frankly I'm not that entertained by all the people arguing that calling Trump supporters racist will just cause Trump to win.

If you think there's a better case against Trump then maybe you should be making it.

If the issue is that you're actually a Trump supporter and your feelings are hurt, as I note applies to several of the people making the argument, then sucks to learn that you're a big racist, I guess, but frankly I don't feel bad about it.

They are fine with being racist (hence supporting Trump).

But being called racist? Completely out of line and hurtful.

Something something real racists are the ones that call out racism. etc etc.

Funny how the people who said they were voting for Trump but weren't bigots never popped back up in the thread

The point he is making that your shame approach didnt work, and in fact made things worse. You need to look at why people are voting trump, not the surface level racism, to better combat him. A lot of his supporters are voting out of economic concerns, you'd be better off pointing out that he is a trust fund baby shyster who has made his money exploiting poor people and exporting jobs. His perceived experience with economics is overriding the shame of racism.

When they say they hate political correctness, they mean they're OK with disparaging minorities and women, right?

My university stopped listing Shakespeare as mandatory course for English major because of political correctness. I'm sure one or two professors are mad about it. Not sure if they are OK with disparaging minorities and women though.

It is always funny in these conversations how the empathy and sympathy and understanding should be flowing toward the racist. And how the oppressed have to coddle them and convince them that the oppressed is worth existing.

Eve the GOP after 2012 said "Yo we need to stop being so bigoted, or we will never see the white house again"

Truly, absolutely, and disgustingly terrifying.

My favorite thing about Baby Boomers bitching about participation trophies is that they and their Gen X children are the ones who handed them all out.

As if I ever wanted that piece of plastic crap. I hated Little League. YOU MADE ME DO IT.

But even if you didn't feel this way, you wouldn't want to teach children the terrible lesson of how its good to participate in things. Damn, now all children are ruined.

THESE PEOPLE MAKE ME SO MAD.

(EDIT: I mean people like in the article, not anyone over 35, to be clear. Now that I'm a less emotional, I hope it's apparent that I'm not meaning to disparage two entire generations or claim milennials are the only ones with problems. I'm just musing over the fact that the same people who awarded the infamous participation trophy now lambast their children and grandchildren for receiving them. Like, I didn't ask for a trophy for showing up! It's not like I have a closet full of Little League trophies that I cherish and retain as symbols of my glorious participation. That anybody of any age expects an award just for showing up is a myth perpetuated by people like this writer. I think this is stupid. You don't have to be an adult for very long to become a jaded cynic who doesn't expect anything from anyone, whether you got a participation trophy or not.)

Gen X - the generation Baby Boomers hate for being too much like Millenials and Millenials hate for being too much like Baby Boomers. We were always misunderstood.

The problem there is that Trump identifies anyone who disagrees with him as an enemy combatant. He'd give police carte blanche for ethnic cleansing.

I love my aunt dearly, and I've tried to convince her of what will happen to my marriage if Trump gets in, but she's voting Trump because she's both racist and sexist. I can't talk to her about any of this.

I do, I love my aunt more than life itself, she's another mother to me, but I can't talk to her about any of this. It disgusts me.

Well, unfortunately you can't disenfranchise somebody just because they hold regressive views. So your options are to convert them or to pray that there's not more of them than there are of you.

Life is not the internet or a college campus; you can't just exclude, marginalize or shout them down. They have a vote, and they are likely to use it.

Brexit happened because people were too busy telling leave voters what idiots/xenophobes they were for thinking that way, rather than making the pro-Euro case in a constructive, persuasive manner.

If the American left doesn't wise up to this, Trump will get elected for the same reason.

That's the other thing.

Contrary to the protestations of all the people who are so convinced that there are all kinds of good people who are Trump supporters but definitely not racist (and I wonder what makes them so sure?), all the polls are pretty clear that most Americans aren't racist* and view Donald Trump's behavior as being racist and unacceptable. Those people who think there's any acceptable reason to vote for Trump are very much in the minority.

Have fun being part of the 30%, guys! Hope you can find a way to distinguish yourself from the Neo-Nazis.

* you know what I mean

The point he is making that your shame approach didnt work, and in fact made things worse.

So the only reason brexit happened was because racists were called racists, got it. You realize how dumb this reasoning is right? The racists didn't need to be told they were racists to agree with racist policies. Them being shamed means at the most, they didn't poll their intentions. It's almost like a whole party of racists fueled civil unrest to get what they want. And we have had many people earnestly engage trump's supporters, facts mean fuck all.

Those very loud openly racist supporters are going to be flabbergasted when they lose badly in November.

"America, aka Whites First" hasn't been a viable path to the White House since 2000, and even then just barely. Bush arguably won reelection on the backs of terrorism fears.

Republicans need to cut loose that section of their party and brave the "dangerous" waters of courting minority votes or they're going to lose badly every single year from here on out. Even then it's going to take a lot of time to reverse the stigma that party has among minorities, which they have rightfully earned over the last few decades.

I get it. The white vote is tempting to court since it still holds a fair bit of sway in the midterms, but all anyone needs to do is look at the demographics and how they are trending very rapidly towards a predominantly mixed race society to see how that is going to end for them.

Racists' last stand to protect their majority: building walls and banning people.

Lol these types of posts.

So where are we at? Let's see.

The oppressed are responsible for convincing their oppressors to stop.

People voting for Clinton are responsible for convincing others to not vote for Trump.

The left is responsible if Trump wins.

So there you go racist, bigots, and other fuckwits! You are all in the clear no matter what happens. People just didn't convince you hard enough.

They seem to care more about racism being called out. My impression is that seems to be more of a sticking point than the actual racism to these people.

Even if you don't care to convince others not to vote for Trump, there are other reasons not to label everyone as a racist just because they vote for him. You may actually find yourself being able to appreciate nuance and grey areas.

The left, like the right, is made up of human beings. Humans are complicated and fallible. And the left is just as susceptible to seeing things in simplistic "good vs evil" terms. Meanwhile, politics is largely a mess of compromises spanning multiple issues.

Even your labels of "oppressed" and "oppressor" belie the complications underneath. A strong majority of black people initially voted against gay marriage and caused it to fail in California. Asian Americans are often hurt by and vote against Affirmative Action. Allowing more immigration from regressive North African and Middle Eastern countries may be good for the "oppressed" Muslims, but not for LGBTQ, Jewish communities, or even women.

Politics is more complicated than "We are the good non-racist and non-sexist voters, and they are the enemy."

Uhm, OK? The oppressed can become the oppressors. I don't think that's in contention. If someone is trying to take away the rights of another person that in no way infringes on their own, then they're "the bad guys". I don't think anyone would disagree with that.

And if we let in others via immigration, that doesn't hurt those communities - the immigrants still have to abide by the laws that are set here. If they come here and gay marriage is legal, then they have to suck it up and deal with it.

Are politics more complicated than that? Sure - but when it comes to Trump, they really aren't. Give me one reason why someone would vote for Trump that isn't somehow based in prejudice. I'd like to hear this reason, because as far as I can tell, there is no reason to vote for him other than "he speaks his mind", which thus far, has meant banning Muslims and building a wall, both of which are based in prejudice in the first place.

It's simple, people on both side of the aisle (or maybe registered Democrats that never realized that deep down they are racist as well) have been suggesting these far fetched ideas for years now. You won't hear it here on GAF, but go out to a bar, a family gathering, get a couple drinks in people and those ideas have been talked about forever. "Get rid of the Muslims" "kick out the illegals" "you know what happens to americans over there illegally"
.
These are the things you hear.

Suddenly here comes this guy, obnoxiously loud and arrogant and promising all the things people have been talking about amongst themselves for over a decade. These people don't go on internet forums, they don't care that you call them racist, no one is going to call them racist offline, all they know is their dream candidate has finally arrived. Someone who will take the course try back.

That is what you're fighting against, almost like an ideology of hate, you can't defeat that by calling people bigots and xenomorphic or whatever. They own it and don't care.

The best defense in my opinion is to to show how you can make this country better again without these racist ideas. Talk about things Republicans want to hear besides illegal immigration, what is your plan for the economy, will you rework Obama care so it doesn't suck? Give faith back to the middle class community. You want to win over people from.the right, take away from Trumps voting numbers? Talk about things they care about. They don't care about social issues, the left reforming social issues is such a no brainier it's almost a waste to talk about it, you know it will be done. It's a given, time to talk about what else you can do for the middle class, cause we are dying.

It's sad, but the only time I seen solidarity in this country, unity between white, black, Asian, Spanish...was the week after 9-11, if you were too young to witness it, all I can say is it felt like we were on a different planet, if only it lasted more than 7 days.

If you're willing to vote in someone who has shown themselves to be ostensibly racist and would enact racist polices that hurt the lives of minorities, you don't get to claim you're better than a racist or "I only care about economics". When you buy the cow, you get every piece.

So, are you saying we should compromise and be half racist?

Like the three-fifths compromise?

This thread makes me wonder what the discussions were like when Hilter rose to power and people voted for him. Trying to image a Jewish guy finding out his best friend voted for Hilter his best saying "oh I'm not against Jewish people politics is too complicated for that. My vote doesn't mean I'm anti-Jewish".

I appreciate that you're the only defender of Trump supporters who posited a strategy other than "coddle the racists," but this is not how modern politics work. You don't try to convince Trump voters; that's as laughable as Republicans courting black voters.

It's all about the turnout and driving it in favorable demographics. It's a huge reason why Clinton's campaign has been making it a sticking point that people should be embarrassed to back Trump. And it's working! Even in anonymous polls, Trump can't crack her lead.

Not that it particularly matters. You're ignoring people of color when you argue this stuff. Hispanic and black voters will not be supporting Trump, and they'll lock this thing up easily. Trump would have to beat Ronald Reagan himself with the white vote, and he's polling well below that, especially with women.

I know you may not have been into politics at the time, but blowouts were way more common. This is shaping up to be Bush 41 Vs. Dukakis, and Hillary ain't the one riding in a tank for publicity.

The discussion on here is another reason why the two party system is crazy. If you are voting for a candidate just because they are not someone else it is really sad. This goes for any side.

You are looking at this as someone who isn't on the receiving end of trumps rhetoric. So you may just not mind it.

This.

Minorities can spot the telltale signs of racism almost immediately if they ever bother to pay attention. "What's the big deal? Doesnt mean you're a racist" is one of the go-to justifications from people who never are in the receiving end and simply don't care.

Passive racism is a very real thing. And one that at this day and age actually more harmful in many ways. A voter who chooses to gloss over the fact that their candidate of choice is one of the most thinly veiled racist candidates in modern history is a true textbook examples of passive racism.

We've seen this shit time and time again. We ain't impressed.

Maybe instead of the left being responsible for courting the racists - erm, ignorant voters - they should research for themselves? 👀

"Hey Mexicans, convince me that this dude who says Mexicans are rapists is not racist or else you're just being unreasonable" has to be one of the worst arguments to facilitate a "dialog".

Reminds me of that episode of Star Trek where Riker had to argue that Data was not human.

Well... for what I've seen on the internet and TV about Trump and the extremely sensitive people in the USA, I think people are over-exagerating this Trump "character".

Trump says this....Trump posts that....so what? People get their feelings hurt over RHETORIC??? The guy hasn't done anything even remotely related to what he supposedly promises. His speeches are empty and full of bs, crafted in such way that he lets people's minds fill the gaps.

Also, politically speaking, there's not much that either Trump or Hillary can do to bring a "doomsday scenario", since both of them have to work with the congress.

I think there is a saying in the USA that goes "put your money where you put your mouth on". The only one that has done that until now has been Hillary.

My point is that people shouldn't get worked up on Trump's rhetoric. It's just that: words. Empty words.

He hasn't done anything because he is only a candidate. Those words will become reality when he is elected.

I don't understand it if you feel that strongly and at odds, why not vote for Johnson or Stein or stay home? Why is Trump the only other opition.?
I guess this is a proper issue. If your only political qualifier is "not this person", then a system where only two candidates seem viable, can lead to questionable picks. The only thing that is keeping independents not-viable is the ouroboros of only wanting to pick that seem like they can win.

I hadn't heard of Stein of Johnson until now, but both certainly meet the "Not Hillary" requirement that some people have, and they are bound to be less openly bigoted than Trump. Giving either of those a shot as the "alternative vote" might not stop Hillary, but you'd be doing your part broadening the political spectrum, and you can sleep easy knowing that you voted authentically without having to hold hands with bigotry. I've been voting for green parties since I could vote, knowing fully well that the chance of them getting any power is slim, and have never regretted it.

This is really dumb.

If Trump is not really a racist but has decided to pretend to be a racist because he believes he can get power from harnessing the support of American racists, that is, if anything, worse than actually being a racist. That would make him a purely cynical powermonger with no concern for the consequences of his statements and actions.

Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, at least it's an ethos.

Actually, it seems the new presidents first task will be to appoint someone to the supreme court thanks to republican fuckery, so no, you're wrong, essentially out of the gate they'll be making decisions that will have far reaching effects for years to come.

*snip*

I'm sorry man but this part of your comment is an utter, stinking, steaming pile of bullshit.

Are you forgetting all the racist propaganda thrown out by the leave campaign? Are you telling me the big upswing in racism happening in the UK immediately after the vote was just a coincidence?

Oh but no, people voted for leave because they were "shamed" in to it, they didn't do it because they were dumb fucks playing with their votes, they didn't do because most of the leave campaign was literally based around "immigration" and they agreed with it, they didn't do it because they were fed bullshit about money flow....nope, nope.... They were "shamed" into doing it.

Fuck that noise, people of voting age are fucking adults who can walk think for themselves. This new "shamed into doing it" is just apologist bullshit secret trump supporters use

Edit:

Or maybe it's the reasoning you use because someone you love or like is a racist and instead of coming to terms with that, you lie to yourself in thinking these people were "pushed" into their line of thinking

Words that empower hate-mongerers, morons, and bigots everywhere.

And no, he hasn't done anything, but only because he's not a politician. If elected, he will be, and his first act will be appointing a new judge to the Supreme Court. That's a huge deal, and one that could royally fuck the rights of citizens for years.

I appreciate that you're the only defender of Trump supporters who posited a strategy other than "coddle the racists," but this is not how modern politics work. You don't try to convince Trump voters; that's as laughable as Republicans courting black .
Thank you for the compliment, but the "Republicans courting black voters is laughable" line confuses me. I mean I know black Republicans, well...rather successful black Republicans, maybe it's a money issue for them, money speaks to all races.

I'm not trying to really defend the trump supporters but the more I read on here, doesn't seem to match up with what I see off of here. When you read about Trump supporters on GAF it's all very stereotypical to the point where I don't believe half the things I read.

"My cousins friend, swastika tattoos and in the KKK"
"My uncle who has white power tattoos on his chest and a Confederate flag on the hood of his car"
"My sister's husband, who has a "ihteblacks" license plate on his Confederate flag truck who is all about "my guns" and thinks Hillary is going to take away his right to bare arms"

No one talks about the Trump supporters who live down the block that is a mixed race couple with a beautiful family and you were just at their pool party two weeks ago.

No one talks about the Ice Cream Man that serves the neighborhood or the Post Man or the guy who just cut your rotors at the shop, (ok well that one I can see). No one talks about the celebrities in their communities (I don't mean internet stars, I just mean home towm heroes)

Do all the examples above support trump solely for racism? Who knows? But the examples I gave above are white, Asian and Spanish. Maybe people just really hate Hillary and they just don't need a justifiable reason.

I'm excluding people in the military because their reason for not wanting g to vote Hillary is a topic that's been done to death.

All I'm trying to say is that innocent looking person you just crossed on the street.....could be voting trump.

The more we talk about this the more I wish I can win the lotto and move my family out of this country. Whoever wins, the other side is going to get violent and it's not going to be pretty here living here.
