I hate "Greatest Hits" games...

God, is there anything worse than the big ugly label they put on the box? I refuse to buy any game that's a greatest hits. It pisses me off so much. People on eBay assume people don't care about this, but I do. I order a game after the seller telling me through an e-mail that it was in the original verion and not the greatest hits. What do I get in the mail today? A greatest hits copy of Sly Cooper 1...:(

The same goes for PSone games as well.

I gotta admit, I care about this to. I go out of my way to NOT buy Greatest Hits, Platinum HIts, and Players Choice games. When a game I want goes GH/PH/PC I usually nab the nearest preowned to make sure I dont get that ugly label.
 
I too support the non-label crowd. HIDEOS

I only have the Player's Choice title for Pac-Man World 2 / Vs for GCN, everything else is CLEAN

Same here.

I refuse to buy a GH/PC/Plat labeled title. I'd take a clean preowned copy over a new PC/GH copy -- and I have (Soul Calibur II).
 
Is there that many people that SERIOUSLY care about the label receiving some changes in the greatest hit versions??? If you have those games THAT close to your heart why didn't you buy it new at full price with the original label?
 
To some people it matters. For me it does. I play games but I also collect them. Its anal retentive but I like having all of the boxarts look the same on my shelf. I even went through the trouble of scanning the Japanese VF4 Evo cover and making my own custom cover for it with the Japanese front and US back because having that one GH game drove me nuts.

If I were you I'd demand my money back. You paid for what you thought was the original version not the GH version. You even went through the trouble of emailing the seller to make sure.

Whenever I buy stuff from eBay I always ask if it is the GH version and if it is I won't buy it. The gameplay is the same, etc, etc but if given the choice between a GH or original packaging I will take the original packaging everytime. And the thing about GH games is... they have to sell at least 400,000 copies to reach GH status so that choice is always available.

i guess so. i mean GAF talks more about games than playing games. i suppose they look at box arts more than actually playing them too, especially when you have people here judging box arts with the boxart threads
 
The labels severely devaluate the game for me, but if it means I can buy older Squenix RPGs for 10 bucks, I can't complain about that.
 
I don't mind PS2's GH, About half of my PS2 games are that way. (Being late + VF4: EVO + money and time saved = fine by me)

I don't see why Gamecube's Player's Choice is a fugly yellow. Ohh, black, black, black, YELLOW? Could they pick a worse color? No.

Xbox is about the middle.

I'm glad they don't do this for GBA.
 
I can see why some people would care (in the interests of collecting), but I myself am not too bothered by it. I'd prefer not to have it, but it's by no means a deal-breaker.

The yellow GC ones are hideous, though.
 
I store my GH games aside from the rest. I hate having one yellow bordered game out of a ton of black ones in my GC pile collection.
 
I used to care, back when it was neon green (psone) but the red does not bother me at all.. and The yellow on Gc does not either....and I don't own any xbox gh so I can' t really say.
 
I mean, those label are meant to be noticed. That's their purpose. It still is an "original label" and not EBgames stickers. And it still is just a freakin label.

I care, I'm willing to pay more for a non GH version of a game and from what I've seen on ebay so do many others

its also more than just a label change, I know with PS1 games that GH games don't have a disc label and the manual is usually B&W
 
I don't really care. I'm not immune to collecting too many games, but I'm still stockpiling them in some phantom belief that they will be played and not to show people who come to my house. I love games, but there is a part of me that finds the concept of going to someones home and seeing a wall of games in their living room on display that would still seem tacky as hell to me.

But as in every hobby, there are those who collect the "objects" of the media as well and videogame collectors aren't any stranger for wanting the "pure" version. I was a book dealer for years and it was bizarre what people would pay for earlier states or printings of books they wanted.

I do this too, but I can see why some people might find it insane. I'm just obsessive about my collection; I don't own a single GH/PH/PC game. Really, I get a thrill out of finding non-GH versions of games that I want. I found a non-GH version of Ratchet and Clank at Sears a couple of weeks ago, and that's had a red stripe for YEARS. Department stores are goldmines for original copies of games.

It does bother me a bit. I don't understand why they have to drastically change the cover template to make it a greatest hits. The N64 player's choice pretty much looked just like hte original box, just with a little tag on it.

Also, don't the instructions usually come in black and white with greatest hits versions?

I agree.

Still, if possible, I like everything to look as uniform as possible. I'll buy a PH/GH copy, but only as a last-ditch resort. If a game gets put on those labels, I make it a point to find a regular copy before they become scarce.
 
Geez, is the concept of aesthetics really that hard to grasp for some of you people? I like to own nice things, and generally the layout work on budget titles is terrible (why is that, anyway?) so I avoid them as well. This is not difficult to understand and it's not obsessive.
 
I have no problem with the greatest hits system, but I do hate the implementation of it. Why can't they just put a sticker OUTSIDE of the plastic? It will draw the attention of the retarded casual who thinks "greatest hits" actually means "greatest hits" instead of "old game," plus, people who don't like the changed boxart will be happy. EVERYBODY WINS. In fact, one of my games did this, Jak 2 had a GH sticker outside of the plastic, and a regular case underneath.

Though Greatest Hits games make little difference to me, it should be noted that it isn't JUST the box that's changed.

It is obsessive, obsessing over "aesthetics". I'm gonna play devil's advocate a bit so please excuse the tone if it gets a bit prickish...but what the hell? I buy games to play them, not to make stacks or rows of game boxes and go "Oooh, look how they all match!"...does one really spend like 5 mins everytime he passes his stack or row or box or whatever of games and gawk at it in slope-headed splendor? Does a budget-titleless stack/row/box/whatever give you +2 erect cock inch bonus points? I guess what bothers me is the arrogance of it...that someone would pass out on playing a great game simply because it's not in the original box...it's still new damn it. It still serves its intended purpose(*gasp* being PLAYED). And yet i'm bet a lot of you types are the same that would call a girl crazy for being similarly obsessive over her clothes and matching accessories(and you'd be right, but a damned hypocrite)...still though, at least clothes have a higher claim to a visual purpose than a game box does.

At least bitch about something more tangible, like limited edition stuff(like gold cart Zelda:OoT, artwork book, music CD, etc)....and plus, haven't a few games actually been ENHANCED in their GH/PC/PH edition...in terms of removing a glitch or whatever?

I don't think most people would go so far as not buying a game because of a box art, unless they're strictly collectors, in which case they won't play it anyway. I'd be willing to pay a few extra dollars for an original game over a GH version, but if I can't find the original I'll get the GH. I'm sure most people who care about box arts feel the same.

So true. I like your thinking.

{almost off topic} But people are getting more and more "image" oriented. Many people live more for the others than themselves. I see young people caring about what'e written on their clothes, pimping their car, caring about if the music they listen is popular and new enough, etc etc. They miss the point of life. I'm sure this behavior can exist in relation to videogames. The collector excuse for not buying the GH version isn't a valid one because if you're a collector you'll need all version than you'll buy the GH just as the original one imo. {/almost off topic}
 
This isnt just about image or aesthetics, its about your game collection.

For example I would rather own the special DVD edition shawshank redemption and pay 4 times the price than go for some cheapo "2 films in 1 dvd combo" package which also included SR PLUS One More!

One has more value than the other. One is collectible, the other isn't. It's probably something anal i.e. I also have 2 copies of each LOTR film.

But few games also come under the collectible bracket these days anyway. For lesser games I have no qualms about collectible factors as I wont hold onto em long.
 
Greatest Hits or whatever it's called on other platforms is probably the best contribution from the Playstation 1 generation, IMHO.

Cynics would argue that you could always get video games at a discount if you waited long enough, that a Greatest Hits line is just a gimmick, but that is not quite true. Many games would either disappear (if you miss them in the occasional bargain bins) or simply remain forever full price for some reason, as if the laws of the market didn't exist.

A Greatest Hits line doesn't stop all that, but it makes some publishers reprint and rerelease certain games, making them easy to find, affordable and you could theoritically own a system and only buy Greatest Hits games, making gaming convenient and more affordable. It certainly make shopping for gifts for nieces and nephews easier.
