I hate "Greatest Hits" games...

I used to obsess over green GH labels on PS1 games, then I realized it simply didn't matter. And in a way, sometimes I have been so late to the party, I oddly prefer to just grab a new GH copy of those games rather than hunt down a sealed old original as I used to. Sort of a reminder that I wasn't there when the game was really making waves.

Two games that have become top favorites--Silent Hill 1 and FFIX--I didn't get until last year or so, so I just grabbed them new and cheap in GH cases and well, there it is.

Here's an idea, if it's such a problem for you get scans of the original boxart and make your own covers. There's walkthroughs on the net to do that if you look for it.

this shit happened to me last year, which was coincidentally the last time I purchased a video game from ebay.

i found a copy of xenogears new and advertised as non greatest hits last summer and put down like 18 bucks for it. The original copies of xenogears, fully wrapped and in 'new' condition, are incredibly rare, so I had no problem putting down money for it. Then it comes and its a GH with that neon green shit on the side. It pissed me off on multiple levels-- one, because I thought I was getting a good deal on a rare game and I wasn't; two, because I was lied to; and three, because I paid nearly sticker price for a GH game when it was advertised as a new game. They even had a picture of the non-GH game cover there to sell it.

Pissed me off. I gave him a bad review, which to a lot of those places is worse than just returning your money, cuz it means they lose future customers too.

I only have the Player's Choice title for Pac-Man World 2 / Vs for GCN, everything else is CLEAN

Haha, same. That's the only one I have.

Am I the only one who is most bugged by the side of the cases? Heh. I've always hated looking up at my shelf and seeing green PSone labels and a yellow GC label.

My PS2 and Xbox are clean.

People who care that much about the greatest hits label on the box need to find another hobby (because it's obvious they are buying games for the wrong reasons).

I would like to see you explain why having a preference is an obsession.

See the bolded letter? Yeah.

*Cracks knuckles*

Ok pardnah, let's see what we have here shall we? Let's see if you can tell the difference between an obsession and a preference.

God, is there anything worse than the big ugly label they put on the box? I refuse to buy any game that's a greatest hits. It pisses me off so much.

Obsession

I don't think most people would go so far as not buying a game because of a box art, unless they're strictly collectors, in which case they won't play it anyway. I'd be willing to pay a few extra dollars for an original game over a GH version, but if I can't find the original I'll get the GH. I'm sure most people who care about box arts feel the same.

See the underlined part? Yeah.
Preference

See the distinction?

Um, so because people go a LITTLE out of the way, they need to find another hobby?

And er, playing games for the wrong reasons? No one is playing a game because of the box art, but if there is a better version of the box art for a game I want, I'd rather have that.

It's a personal preference.

Well I just ordered another Sly Cooper. I asked the seller twice about it being the original version and he/she said yes. Wish me luck. :)

:lol

Holy crap, this is an issue for some of you losers? Refusing to buy a Greatest Hits/Players Choice version of a game because of its label?

I love the general concept of a Players' Choice series. Great games, low price, what the hell is there to complain about? :P

Me too. I won't buy the GH versions. What I do is wait for a game to GH, and grab one of the remaining stock. Recently, managed to get X-Men Legends and Star Ocean 3 before the GH packaging of doom (They took away SO3's cardboard box!)

I don't care, I buy games to play them, not collect them. Collecting usually leads to having some sort of OCD and packrat habits which I care not to have in the first place :P. In fact, if there was some sort of alternative of bulk storing cd/dvds with manuals in a nice organized way, I'd probably throw away the game cases as they take too much storage space. The only problem I may have is condition of a dvd/cd, I get anal. I don't like a single scratch or mark on my stuff.

I was more referring to those refusing to buy a GH title or paying more for one that isn't labeled GH. I rank it up there with people only buying games if it is made by a certain developer, or from a specific country, or not buying a game because it's multiplatform.

It's no different than people refusing to wear a certian brand name clothing or people refusing to shop at certain stores.

I would play games more, but I'm always short on time. So I guess I would classify as a collector. I won't even think about buying a game if it has a "GH" label on it.

You know, I don't care one way or the other. All my games could be in slimline cases with controller layout sheets as the only insert and modified boxart up the ass, but hey, they'd still be the same game (unless they got upgraded in GH version, which a couple did).

As a sidenote, I'm thinking of eventually sorting my boxes all to slimline, to increase storage space.

There's two sides of the fence here.
People who want a collection and hate having the BRIGHT YELLOW GAMECUBE PC LABEL pointing out that you bought a game cheap and way too late
and
People who like to save money/easily identifiable quality titles.

For those of you mocking those who care about box art, what would you say if they put a giant penis across the front of the box with "This game makes me hard!" on it indicating quality?
Aside from the humor, it probably deters others from purchasing it, right?
No one wants some ugly turd on their shelves. Game collections are like DVD collections.

Look at that.
LOOK AT THAT!
Those PC games are a real sore thumb. Everything else is so harmonic. I tried grouping them (SMB2 = PC, SMB1 = Original), but it's still stupid-hard.

I sure as hell don't. If I were to spend full price on a current game and finish it in a couple of hours I'd be absolutely digusted. Even back during the 8 and 16-bit era if I finished a game I bought in the same day I bought the game, I felt ripped off.

. People have different tastes. Deal with it.

My eyes :(

edit: I believe the non-GH copy of Kingdom Hearts has a shiney cover where the GH one is just regular non-shiney.

Umm, yes, there is a difference. A big part of clothing is how they look. That is one of the primary purposes of clothing.

The primary purpose of a videogame is to be played, and who the fuck cares what the box looks like?

Man, who the fuck cares? Seriously, I look at that, and all I see is a crapload of videogames. I don't give two shits that a few of those games have a yellow stripe on the spine. Whoopdy-fucking-doo.

You think people wear Ambercrombie clothing because it makes them look good? People wear clothes like that because it tells people "I'm rich and pay more for the same clothes you wear". That's all fashion is. Jeans are Jeans. Ambercrombie clothes are no different looking than the clothes you find at Wal-Mart. If the primary purpose of games were to be played then all the covers of games would be black with white lettering. So much time and money goes into cover art it's not even funny. I bet you Ico would have sold better if it had the PAL cover.

Some of you are getting really bent out of shape. Look....people collect things. Stupid things. They obsess over their things, and it's a perfectly acceptable activity in every material rich society on earth. It's not unique to video games and it's not new. I personally would also avoid the activity, but I don't know why some of you are both angered and amazed that it exists.

Most game collections aren't that interesting because they are simply stockpiles. They don't show any discernment or interesting features of taste. Blame it on the medium or the age of videogames in general. Or just the fact that games are fairly non-intellectual.

Ok, then what is the primary purpose of games?

(I actually agree about the fashion label thing :P)

We are talking about something that has nothing to do with the gameplay (boxes). Also, people who hate short games are the coolest people ever.

Why are games only for gameplay? People collect books based on age, printing, etc. (books are for reading!) People collect coke products (Coke is for drinking!) Early Ferrari cars (Cars are for driving!)

i don't have anything to add to this "debate" but this made me :lol, I nearly spilled my coke when I read that.

The covers of the games are different to ATTRACT ATTENTION ON STORE SHELVES. Appeasing your cretinous OCD-related impulses is purely a tertiary consideration, if at all.

I guess some of us don't understand the appeal of collecting. I know people who collect gigabytes and gigabytes (with backups) of pictures of girls and never look at them. I think it's all retarded (especially that coke product example you mentioned).

i don't get why the people who are so BATSHIT INSANE about non-GH covers don't just buy the games earlier...

wow jesus, you have a lot of gamecube games.

in either case, yeah they stick out, but i couldn't give a fuck. i have all of my dvd case games and dvd movies on the same shelf all out of order, and i don't care how they look.

I'm also in agreement with Drinky and if it wasn't for the fact that you can make your own covers using the original box art, this thread would be useless.

MAKE YOUR OWN COVERS!

If it's such and issue for you then you shouldn't mind spending extra money on empty dvd cases and Kinko's costs.

I have made my own covers for the GBA games.
I'm considering doing the N64 ones as well, now, too.
But I can't be bothered to make new covers for ones I have already in the DVD-case standard.

It could be so much worse - you just don't know. I still remember with horror NOE's Players Choice boxes for N64. Their retarded designer had gone gradient and bevel happy to the max:

Not to mention the standard edition N64 PAL covers - great artwork forced inside a HUGE ugly ass black border. WTF?

fuck the players choice. You should be more embarassed about owning Charlie's Angels on VHS. Two strikes.

Would it be too hard to have a double sided DVD art with Greatest Hits on the other side and regular version on the other side?

I can't believe this shit. You people are completely fucked in the head if this really matters to you. A label.....on a damn box. Seriously, snap out of it.

Jesus fucking fuckedy fuck I want to bitch slap some of you people sometimes.

I think collectors are emotionally compensating....I just think in most cases it's rather harmless. I don't really understand it except when I get driven to buy some things I don't need or almost don't want (which I think most consumers experience). Either way, the psychology of it is pretty interesting, unfortunately many collectors are not :( Coke product collectors are pretty low on the class scale of collections (collecting mass market products generally are) but video game collections aren't that high. Their demographic is increasing though.

Scorn probably won't help these people though. They need friendly smiles and intensive shock therapy.

It's my roommate's, not mine, thank god.

Although I do own the first two seasons of the Simple Life on DVD.

I hate the labels and dont want them in my collection. Only got three Platinum editions and I do like to keep it that way. GC collection is clean! No Player Choice mumbo jumbo! Same thing with Xbox.

I just want to keep the box/cover original, i like it more that way.
