I hate "Greatest Hits" games...

I hate the labels and dont want them in my collection. Only got three Platinum editions and I do like to keep it that way. GC collection is clean! No Player Choice mumbo jumbo! Same thing with Xbox.

I just want to keep the box/cover original, i like it more that way.

I like you. :)

Covers have no meaning to me. I distinctly remember purchasing KOTOR witrh the generic "Xbox Previously Played Game" cover over the original to save five dollars.

Now manuals on the other hand...

I guess if I wasn't concerned about this sort of shit, I'd probably end up pirating everything. I collect games to play, mainly so i'll have a backlog when i'm in a financial situation down the road that prevents me from spending much on gaming. The GH/PC thing rubs me the wrong way for some reason, I think maybe because I don't like having the cheapo version? Kinda stands out and cheapens the whole thing. It's a harmless compulsion, so I don't worry about it.

On the subject of clothes, avoiding Wal-Mart quality clothing is not just about looks. Generally speaking, more expensive clothing generally lasts longer, washes better (less shrinkage and color problems) and fits better. In my experience anyways. I don't go as far as Ambercrombie though.

When I have to choose between a used Greatest Hits title and a used non-Greatest Hits title of the same game, I always choose the non-GH version. Not because I care, but because it means that there's one less "clean" version on the shelf for the anal retentive twats who actually care about this bullshit.

i used to pull non gh editions for used games that i sell to people.

now i will go out of my way, maybe even start making my own greatest hits labels to splatter all over the boxes.

I have a Platinum Gran Turismo 3 and PLAYSTATION 2 THE BEST :lol Katamari Damacy. Who cares, really. I don't play the game cases.

Would it be too hard to have a double sided DVD art with Greatest Hits on the other side and regular version on the other side?

I like this idea!

Also if you are friendly with you local game store clerks ask them if you can swap out your GH cover for a non-GH cover. Granted this does not help you with the red or silver label on the actual disc.

Most game collections aren't that interesting because they are simply stockpiles. They don't show any discernment or interesting features of taste. Blame it on the medium or the age of videogames in general. Or just the fact that games are fairly non-intellectual.
I agree with everything else you said, but I would take exception to this; I think a library comprised mostly of licensed EA schlock would definitely show less discernment and taste than a library of (if I may be allowed a bit of immodesty for all of us) the average GAFer.

Anal collectors go for sealed copies so your attempts are futile.

Yea, I'm sure many people here basically have a stack of pretty good games. But there are a lot of compulsive collectors who just buy everything on a console, etc. including reiterations of the same shit or other abject poop. And really I just meant that games comparatively speaking are sort of a young medium, and you don't have tons of room to specialize or branch out in collections, etc. I agree a "collection" of EA games featuring every yearly update on PS2 wouldn't be that exciting.

Can always depend on people here to be unable to understand another person's position from your own. Good old GAF.

Oh I understand just fine...I understand that it's a misplaced obsession.

It wouldn't be so bad if the discs were the same discs as the originals, but they tend to be cheapo discs too. Thats something that really puts me off as opposed to the label on the box.

Dont know why people are so surprised, why do you think all top films come out in 2, 3 or sometimes 4 editions these days? This is a completely natural and normal tendency for consumers.

I just realised I don't have any "bargain" games in my collection, was a subconcious thing rather than some kind of vow to not touch those games.

i.e. I just ordered some new DVDs, for each one I made sure if there were any Limited/Special Editions, if so, I got those, otherwise I'd make do with a normal one.

If you note the Platinum version of RECVX up there, it's got monotone printing on it. This is much like how the original Playstation's Greatest Hits line worked--they eschewed the color diskart to save money.

Of course, this gen that's not the case.

Edit: this discussion is kinda stupid... what are you collecting? games or boxes?
if it's boxes, technically, you should buy both...
Meaning it's more stuff for you to have.. aka, it's a good thing!

this shit happened to me last year, which was coincidentally the last time I purchased a video game from ebay.

i found a copy of xenogears new and advertised as non greatest hits last summer and put down like 18 bucks for it. The original copies of xenogears, fully wrapped and in 'new' condition, are incredibly rare, so I had no problem putting down money for it. Then it comes and its a GH with that neon green shit on the side. It pissed me off on multiple levels-- one, because I thought I was getting a good deal on a rare game and I wasn't; two, because I was lied to; and three, because I paid nearly sticker price for a GH game when it was advertised as a new game. They even had a picture of the non-GH game cover there to sell it.

Pissed me off. I gave him a bad review, which to a lot of those places is worse than just returning your money, cuz it means they lose future customers too.
You have issues.

I always make a big deal about the cases and I HATE it when my disks have any tiny scratch. I wish I didn't. I don't own a single game with any sort of greatest hits label on it.

I was at EB today and noticed that a new copy of Super Smash Bros Melee wasn't players choice. The cover looked normal except for Nintendo's new "Best Seller" label on the middle bottom. I prefer this over the yellow Player's Choice cover.

I was looking at the pic i posted and i though: good thing you guys don't collect Genesis games...

dc.jpg

or DC games for that matter... :D

I personally expect player's choice games...
At least that's a excuse for me to buy them for 15 bucks on ebay..

talking about that, where's metroid prime 2 player's choice?

So some of you guys are:

-too cheap to buy games at full price
-too picky to buy games with the discount cover

:lol

I hate to admit it, but I give a shit about the greatest hits packaging "affecting" the look of my collection. Hey, I collect video games, so please allow me even more leg room to act like a geek.

And all of this would be a moot point of the powers that be simply did a better job at designing the look of the greatest hits line. I'm certain it can be eye-grabbing and yet not be gaudy at the same time.

My solution would be to simply change up the plastic wrapping, like add a huge sticker or something. Why should Sony or whoever care how it looks after its opening? They got their money.

That about sums me up yeah

I don't feel bad when I buy a game at a lower price if it's awful, unlike people who did HA HA HA

I really only buy games that are rated 8.0 or above on average. I don't really hate any of the games I've bought, and they're all at full price except for the odd impulse buy here and there (i.e. NHL 2004 and NBA 2k2 for $5 each - I don't even play sports games :P).

To some people it matters. For me it does. I play games but I also collect them. Its anal retentive but I like having all of the boxarts look the same on my shelf. I even went through the trouble of scanning the Japanese VF4 Evo cover and making my own custom cover for it with the Japanese front and US back because having that one GH game drove me nuts.

Wuss! I held out and waited till I could get the Japanese version cheap enough. Wasn't easy cuz that went Greatest Hits too so I had to dig for a non GH version at a cheap price that was brand new =)

Ok having finally gone through this thread, I'm in the camp that simply refuses to buy a GH/PC/etc version of a game. However, if it's a game I really want I'll likely buy it right away thus not giving myself a chance to get the rereleased version. If I don't get it right away, it's likely because I don't think it's worth the money and willing to wait for a price cut. Usually that means if it hits greatest hits, then I can pick it up for $20 before all the stock has been replaced. If it never hits GH, then it'll be on clearance and I get it for cheap. If for some reason it changed to GH, and I can't get it otherwise, chances are the game wasn't a big deal enough for me to have made the effort to get it earlier and I can do without owning it, so I refuse to get the GH version. Only when it came to VF4:Evo is where I actually ran into a problem. I eventually got the JP version for $25 to have a non GH version. So am I picky? Sure but I've got it down so it's not like I'm making a ton of effort to avoid them or trying to find a non-GH version when a GH version exists. I'm a collector. I think I have a pretty nice collection that consists mostly of solid great games with the occaisional game that either fits my tastes or has some other reason of having it such as getting it for free. Some of you are making more effort to put down the collectors in this thread than I do to avoid picking up a GH game.
