Hearts of Iron II Complete, get it off of steam.
On that screenshot you see WW3. With the US invading the Soviet Union from the North, and Great Britain invading the Soviet Union from the South (and actually, both from the East as well, but you can't see it on that map :p). I'm playing the Netherlands in that game (orange). Conquered Greece, Albania, Yugoslavia, Italy, Austria, Denmark and am in the process of conquering Germany :p.

Kabouter how many hours did u put into HoI2 before you actually knew what the hell you were doing?

Holy shit I didn't think I'd have any chance at all of running Left 4 Dead, awesome news. I haven't had a chance to play this as I no longer have a 360. Keep the suggestions coming though guys this thread will be a great resource to come back to
You'll have to lower your settings for Left 4 Dead, but you should be able to run it. I have the desktop version of that chip, and it runs L4D at ~20fps @ 1280x720 with low settings, so you'll probably need to drop the resolution.

You should be able to run at med/high settings on older Source engine stuff like HL2/CS:S, though. I haven't tried Portal on mine yet, but I would guess it'll run on low/med settings.

Damn how could I forget that :lol
Isn't dice wars a browser game? if we were talking online (browser) games then this would probably be endless. Also I'm really out of material here :lol Cube 2, Nexuiz, Tremulous, Urban Terror, Frets on Fire, Warsow...

*As a sidenote, all games above are open-source and will run on Linux*

This is radical news, I will be hitting Steam up for a few games for sure. I have suddenly realised I may not be as productive work wise with this laptop as I would have liked :lol

Quite a few :p
Helps if you start by playing as the US and on a lower or even the lowest difficulty setting, almost impossible to lose. USSR is actually even more powerful potentially, but harder to play if you're new I guess given that there's a lot more time pressure, and you have annoying factors like dissent playing a major part.

SunAge was a bit of a mess in terms of bugs and glitches when it was released, but it's now lightyears from where it was due to some great dev support post-release. It's a great quasi-retrospective on the golden age of RTS games, and plays really well. Looks awesome with widescreen support and beautiful sprites and effects.

Runs on the most modest of systems.

ATI and nVidia integrated graphics are actually pretty decent, comparable to low end video cards. It's the Intel integrated that's absolute garbage.

the GMA950 that came with a lot of Pentium M laptops, as well as many Atom netbooks, can't even run Counterstrike 1.6

The X3100 and X4500HD are newer and more reasonable, but they are still pretty lame.

How does the HD 3200 compare to the 8600M GT?

I'm on the 8600M GT and I've been running HL2/CSS on 1280x800 maxed out easily (I could even run Crysis on 1024x800 on Low).

I run a limp rig, a wonderfully gutless Intel Celeron M-powered Compaq Presario notebook, so I feel the burn more than most. However, I like to dig around for obscure titles with low requirements, and more often than not, I end up having a lot of fun.

I'm sometimes surprised though, some games end up running quite nicely on the machine. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI, Halo CE, Republic: The Revolution, Iron Grip: Warlord, Sword of the Stars etc., all run really nicely.

the 8600M GT is way better, around 3x as fast

the HD3200 is a bit slower than the 8400M GS.

I would say that Left 4 Dead will probably run rather poorly on this. Try the Portal demo to get an idea of performance, L4D is a bit more demanding than Portal.

Well, I have the day off today so I plan on seeing what I can get out of this laptop. I'll try the Portal demo first for sure. There's a vid on youtube (posted earlier) of a guy playing Gears Of War on this very laptop, albeit in low detail but I would love to play through this again, trouble is I can't seem to find a demo of it. There's enough great recomendations in this thread to keep me going for ages

Left for Dead will probably work at a good framerate in 480p. It's still the best online experience you can have :D

Is the 3200 that bad? I've seen TF2 and L4D running on a mobility HD2400 fine. Low settings and 800x600, of course, but solid fps (30+).

No, its actually quite capable for an integrated part. So long as you keep the resolution down, plenty of games will run just fine.

My housemate runs a Macbook with an integrated 9400m and it runs the likes of Command and Conquer 3 and Quake 4 pretty damn well all things considered. Whilst that part is higher up on the food chain the difference isn't that massive. The main thing that kills performance is upping the resolution or adding AA or AF as these chips are severely bandwidth limited as they have to leach bandwidth from your system RAM. Stick to 800x600 and your experience should be pretty good.

One tip with playing games though, is to keep the aspect ratio(as long as the game supports 16:10), regardless of the resolution. I played TF2 on an even lower spec laptop this weekend and it ran fine at 720*480(I think it was that) with everything on low.

^ That looks awesome, almost like an underwater Braid in style

So the Laptop ran Portal no problem in medium to high detail at a low res. I had to update the graphics drivers to make it work and then Vista blue screened on me, not sure why

I guess I can ask this here.

I have a Inspiron E1505 and I want to replace my CPU. I was wondering if my BIOS would allow for it or not... if my computer would be compatible with a more powerful Core 2 Duo processor. I want to play more game on my laptop but my processor is weak. I think I'll just start building a gaming rig if it's not possible to upgrade my cpu.
