I just started Octopath Traveler 2 and I'm already broken

The game's a fucking masterpiece, but it flew under the radar for most people. I didn't expect much from it, but I got one of the most completely engaging JRPGs I've ever played, and I realized while I was playing it that it's probably going to be a long time before another RPG gets me this completely. I think I had a kind of similar experience to you, where it was super cool when the game started, but then you get to a night scene, and it's just like... indescribably atmospheric. Really just masterful stuff.

I haven't played the original, but I've heard it's not as good... I do want to get around to it at some point, though.
thank you so much for your suggestion

Saving my place here for the day I finally play OT2. I really enjoyed the first one despite its weaknesses, and I hear 2 is an improvement across the board.

I have never played the bravely games but the artstyle was kind of grating on me. Is the story/gameplay really worth it? @Roman Empire
Yeah, the combat is even better than the Octopath games with more jobs, abilities and freedom. The story is also a more traditional approach rather than the 8 separate stories in Octopath. So yeah, highly recommended.

Try Bravely Default when you get a chance, easily one of the better JRPG soundtracks out there with an aural experience of the same caliber as Octopath.

This is the best JRPG we've had in years. Everything about it is so polished and well presented. It's a game that respects your time and abilities while still giving you a good amount of play hours. The finale is really memorable. The stories all build up to a larger story which is really nice.

I swear I thought this thread was going to be about Osvald the Scholar.

Mild early game spoilers.....rather mild early gameplay spoilers.

Rather the Scholar job in general on that starting island....pretty much any character you choose on that island, add Scholar and your team is already broken.....bring in the rest of the Island and Ochette and its game over.

Throne + Osvald
Temenos + Osvald
Ochette + Osvald

I actually went with Ochette as starter then gathered Throne, Temenos and Osvald.......made the game piss easy and I was already going to high level zone well well too early.

Was this game ever remastered???
I played it but dont remember it having a particularly strong OST.....then again probably the speaker was just shit and id need to listen to the OST properly elsewhere.

Bravely Default (the first) is being remastered for Switch 2.

By the way, I need to STRONLY recommend this compilation music video of all the chill songs of Octopath 2. I listen to it regularly.

I actually debated between Odvald and Throne the most. I picked throne because she's hot but I'm going for him next after Temenos. I'll leave reading the spoilers till then.

While I have never played either Octopaths (albeit known of their existence since day 1) for them not somehow being interesting enougj, I have listened to the OP1 soundtrack.

I never paid too much attention to it, but this thread made me listen again to For Redemption + Decisive Battle 2.

The transition to the actual battle song, god DAMN, the fucking drums, those fucking drums

This was enough for me to put both OP1 and OP2 on my wishlist once the price comes down.

SLIGHT UPDATE:

After taking aa hiatus from this game and playing different stuff I'm back in and have picked up all characters except Ochette. I've played for about 12 hours now. A few thoughts here:

- Even though I've only done the 1st chapters of the characters its quite clear that they focused a lot more on fleshing out the characters and adding a lot more dialogue, which is great for the most part!
- Literally everything in this game is a direct upgrade from OP1: The graphics, the music, the world assets, the colour pallet, the animations, the QoL features, the ability balance (made the game too easy imo), the choice on how to progress the characters' stories, the map design etc etc. This game is one of the handful of games ever made I can say that is directly superior to is predecessor in every single metric.
- Throne is distractingly hot.

Who is currently in your party, and what are your general plans for how you will tackle the chapters?

Ochette surprised me - she was the character I was least interested in before getting to her, and she ended up being one of my favorite characters from a gameplay standpoint. Super fun class.

It's on the list.

Finished Baten Kaitos recently and now I'm trying to juggle BK Origins and The Hundred Line while maintaining a full time job. Probably just gonna spend the year playing JRPGs. I am skeptical about the praise for the Octopath games but 2 looks a lot better than the first.

Been playing The Hundred Line every chance I get.

Throne, castti, Osvald, Agnea. Throne is main and osvald is 2nd for elemental attacks, though apothecary job is good enough as well for that.
Currently plan to complete chapter 2s in western content, then collect Ochette, then move to eastern for chapter 2s and side stories there. Will start chapter 3s after that and make my way to west again..

Historical low on Steam right now. Bundle along with the first one (which is also 60%) is also available for extra 5% lol, Square pricing is just whack.

I tried the demo and immediately was smitten by it. Really cozy artwork, simple but classic turn based combat (I hate the ATB stuff, couldn't get into FF9, Chrono Trigger because of that combat), great enemies designs, everything just perfectly stitched by a grand, orchestral soundtrack. Chef's kiss <3

Nitpick: random encounters, I mean I get it. It's a JRPG, you gotta fill/bloat to make it 100+hours.

Now the question is should I get the bundle play both or just this one (I know it's not connected).

Both games are great. I don't care what anyone says, I love the first game.

There's a roundabout way to decrease random encounters in OP1, and it is tied to a passive class skill. Running will also increase encounter rates.

Thanks, I guess I'll get the bundle lol as Square hardly discounts this franchise and without the discount the first one is really expensive even after 7 years lol.

I love the first one and I ain't even completed it yet ( ended up playing some other games in my backlog) Bought this one in the strength of a quick playthrough on gamepass. Great games to have in anybodies collection. Now if only I could actually get round to finishing a playthrough of the first one.

Octopath 2 is one of the few sequels that I would say outright replaces its predecessor: it's a top-to-bottom better experience that fixes most of Octopath 1's problems.
For real. It's like the devs read my mind and fixed all my issues over the first. The only real issue now is the way the story is split kind of breaks the pacing. It would be cooler if they did a Wild Arms thing where the paths converge earlier on or something. I don't know.

I'm in the minority here, but...

I had no desire to go through eight individual stories to understand the characters. I liked the first game, but it was more about the unique concept. This was the same concept, and I don't want to do that again. I prefer character development to be part of the main progression, not something you have to manually work towards. With Final Fantasy X (using this as an example because I love the story and gameplay) the characters were developed as I progressed. I didn't have to do side quests (aka, "stories") to unlock and then learn about each characters story.

If you love this game, more power to you. I certainly don't think it's bad. It just didn't resonate with me.

Love these games, they're awesome. OT2 is probably the better one but OT1 was fresher for the time, kind of underrated and nailed a bunch of its systems from the get-go. Both soundtracks are exemplary!

Also one of OT2's chapters will break your heart. I won't say which.

You only do 1-2h individually at start for each character, later you have quests with multiple character parties, unique stories for different parties and in the end they all tie up. Its not as fractured as first game.

Been binging on this and Baten Kaitos 1&2 remastered.

If you're playing on Steam Deck, use decky to inject reshade and mod the aspect ratio so it's 16:10.

As for the music, yeah it's pretty amazing. One of the few times I can honestly say I enjoy a battle theme on repeat.
