I need a gaming mouse

Funky Papa

FUNK-Y-PPA-4
Here is the situation.

My desk is quite polished, almost shiny, so optical mouses tend to act weird when they want, like moving the cursor when they please and that kind of things. That is not a real problem when working, but it sucks for gaming because sometimes I'm playing BF2 or other fps and my character decides to point the sky in the middle of a shootout. So, I'm looking for a new mouse.

So far I've seen this one and it looks cool, but Logitech quality isn't what it used to be and it is quite expensive, so I'm considering alternatives. Is there a classic, corded mouse out there suitable for gaming? I am not a big fan of opticals and I also dislike cordless mouses.

I hate them =P

I also need to change my current mouse for other reasons (I need more buttons)

This is my current (shitty) mice

Well, I dunno about how well a Laser mouse works on shiny surfaces, but it's not a mouse thing, it's a "opticals hate shiny surfaces" thing. And even if you get a new mouse (that's optical), it's still gonna act up.

That's why I don't want it optical and I'm looking at a laser mice or a classic one, laser mouses don't have problems with polished surfaces.

If you can find it cheaper go with the Logitech MX510

I got this beautiful bad boy for $25 at BestBuy because they had it on display for the MX518...

So basically if you go somewhere and both are around the same price get the MX518, it doesn't look quite as sexy but has a 1600dpi where the MX510 looks slick on your setup and has a 800dpi which is still just as good.

I use my MX1000 on a beech wooden table, but testing it, it works well on my Antec Sonata case, which has a black piano finish (quite shiny), and also works on transperant plastic (with a white backing).

However it failed to work on my glass coffee table, but works perfectly on my black table which my MX500 failed dismally on.

It's has no lag between your moving and cursor moving. Some people say they can, but they're just psychologically affected by wireless mice; objectively, not even the pickiest bastards from Firingsquad can seem to discern any lag.

Probably the best mouse in the world today. But the price reflects that.

This may be way out of left field but have you considered anything that uses a track ball?

Until very recently one of my friends swore by his track ball, and did very well with it, not quite as accurate when it comes time for sniping, but in general you can turn faster and look around more easily. It's quicker to go for more thumb than it is to have to clop your mouse back down and add a bit more to your turn or look.

Logitech MX1000 would be my recommendation

It's wireless, smooth as silk and just uber-fantastic!

I hated that mouse for gaming. Buttons would trigger randomly the further I got away from the sensor. You could reprogram certain buttons. Just made it a pain in the ass to use.

I replaced mine with one of these:

Razer Plasma Diamondback

I've never had a problem once.

THE MX1000 is great, not sure how it works on very shiny surfaces as I use a mouse pad.
It does work pretty good on my black desk though, my old optical mouse would not work on it.
It's a fantastic mouse for gaming too, i haven't had any lag problems with it.

I tested the mx1000 in cs and the laser worked very shitty there, it was always buckling a bit.. so I would not recommend the a laser mouse for FPS. Best would just be to buy a mousepad, or maybe an old Razer boomslang, which has no optical sensor.

there may be some inteference with the sensor, either something maybe physically in its way, or some such... I thought my mouse had a range of 5-6 feet, until I moved places, repositioned stuff and found that it actually had a huge range. Maybe the inteference was from my TV; not entirely sure, there were alot of electronics crammed into one area... or it might've been the electrical inteference from the apartment's wiring.

For the most part though, it works, and works like a dream. I'd definetly still shoot for the MX1000 on the basis of this thread, but just make sure to keep the receipt in case anything goes wrong. (it might, like with hacked and me, but it shouldn't, not for the most part).

I second. Problems with USB on some systems though. I bought one with a fUnc 1030 mousepad. It's like gaming on a air-hockey table.

There's the answer. The programmability on that thing is pretty damn good. I don't get per-exe configs like I used to with my trackball, but it does do macros.

It's a very nice mouse, and you don't have to get the LE blue plasma version like Mr Moneybags McDuck did.

Newegg has them for $43.

I have had the razer for a while, it is a nice mouse no doubt, but if you like to use buttons besides click and alt click, i do NOT recommend it. The thumb bottons are in awkward places and there just are not that many buttons in total.

Try the logitech if you like to use thumb buttons and more.

Mx1000 no question. Best feel and works best. All the stuff about it being not all that are unfounded or are faulty mice.

Wireless Mice are just not good for serious gaming. The delay and the fact that if your fat neighbor decides to nuke a burrito, your mouse may or may not crap out for a second, makes it useless.

There is no delay with the Mx1000

I own one, trust me, the difference between using it to game and using the mx518 or the razer is like night and day. Plus the fact you cant up the polling rate on a wireless mouse for the USB port because it is limited by the transmission rate.

I up my USB polling to 500 or 1000, it does make a bit of difference.

You talk like it makes a world of difference, but the truth is, the difference would only be percievable by the most anally rententive frame rate/lag nazis.

For the rest of us, the practicality of having no cord far outweighs any next to indiscernable lag due to wireless.

Fair enough the OP is asking for a gaming mouse... but I'm guessing he wants a mouse that's good for all situations, not just gaming. I doubt he's going to plug in a gaming mouse for gaming use and a normal mouse for normal use...

for everything else the MX1000 is unparalleled, and for gaming, it's next to the best.

Well, the OP will have to decide for himself if the MX1000 is for him... but I'd personally recommend that he try it first before anything else! It'll reduce the likelihood of him going back and exchanging or some such :P

Why not?

At all times I have:

Microsoft Wireless Keybaord and Mouse
Microsoft Optical Trackball
Razor Diamondback
Logitech Extreme 3D Pro
Belkin Nostromo N52
Radio Shack PS2 - USB Adaptor

plugged in.

Different tools for different jobs. And USB was intended to allow us to do this.

But, I am a Control Nazi. I'm the goddamn Furher.

Clutter, lack of USB ports, money, lack of obsessive compulsiveness...

All sound reasons to go for the best overall device/setup, instead of multiple setups.

DEFINITELY get this. I have it and it's great.

Guys, guys, it can't be optical because my desk is really polished and the pointer goes ga-ga when it wants. I need either a laser mice or an old fashioned one (with a ball)

Well the MX1000 is the only namebrand laser mouse.

So buy it, buy a trackball, or get a goddamn mousepad and quit your bitching.

It uses the same bandwidth as a wired mouse. :) No difference. Read the tech website if you arent so sure they also explain the whole USB situation. :D

Mx518 is nice but the Mx1000 feels better. Plus it has better design, buttons and is classy.

I own the MX1000 and it's fantastic both for gaming and other applications. Can't recommend it enough. I have it right now sitting on my desk, with no pad (black surface too.)

As already said, for serious gaming the mx1000 is no good, but since u dont even wanna use a mousepad, I guess it would be sufficient for you.

Else get that old bitch

Spend a little extra money and buy the MX Laser 1000. It'll be the best money you've ever spent. It's by far the best mouse I've ever used.
