this is the hardest fucking thing i have ever done. the heatsink won't go down!!!:lol

intel fan heatsink?

Make sure they're all in the hole even. Then press 2 of the pins are a time, but pins that are diagonal from each other.

for example top down view looks like this:

O [O]

[O] O

[]= indicate which ones are being pressed in at once

holy shit IT'S ALIVE

HOLY SHIT GUYS IT'S ACTUALLY ON AND WORKING FUCK ME FUCK ME

the reason it wasn't working is as follows:

the fans were plugged into the peripheral wires into the PSU, like they were supposed to. But apparently I wasn't supposed to further plug those into the various fan labeled spots on the motherboard. As soon as I took them off, everything sprung to life - the fans, the LED lights, the CPU, the RAM...

Yeah. Wow. The sense of accomplishment after 11 hours of work makes me want to cry. FUCK YEAH!

Grats, that's what it's all about. The modern day equivalent of putting a shelf up or fixing a leaky roof!

Lkr said:

Most heatsinks have either a gap in the metal for a flathead screwdriver to be pushed into to force it down, or newer ones have a plastic bit you push down with your thumb, are you maybe missing that?

edit: ah, I see you got it sorted. Nice one! :)

congratulations Amirox!

I am going to jump in and try pc building for the first time, from looking at a few articles over the past few hours over a few beers I have come up with a possible build which is listed below. Please bear in mind I am totally new to this so my choices might be less than optimal. I'd like to know what you guys think and also to recommend a PSU and monitor if possible (I am a UK-er:)

Also I would like Windows 7 but I don't know which version to get, any advice here would be much appreciated.

Budget: Flexible, up to around £450 atm, still need a PSU and OS and a monitor (19" up), would like to keep it under £800 ultimately.
Main Use(s): gaming, serving media to my consoles
Monitor Resolution: not sure, high as possible I guess, would like it to look good on a 19" and up monitor, gaming and office usage predominantly
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: um, everything? Spending a decent amount so would like to be able to play majority of games over next couple of years without thinking too hard about compatibility, if this is reasonable of course

what I have come up with (any suggestions on better deals also welcomed :)

I will be building my new rig in the coming weeks.... but I am worried about certain things. First some specs!

CPU: AMD Phenom 955 Black Edition
Mobo: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD
GPU: Will be reusing my Radeon HD 4870 512MB (will probably update in 9 months or a year)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3750528AS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5
OS: Windows 7
PSU: Will reuse my Corsair TX 750W

I have about $500 here or so including shipping. Now, I just wanted to ask a few things to PC GAF:

1) I know AMD Hexa Cores are coming soon... and CHEAP. Anyone knows a time frame for release? Will it be worth it?
2) The mobo... is it maybe an overkill? I am not gonna do extreme gaming here, just want an up-to date computer that can run games fine.
3) I think this RAM is overkill for me. Any cheaper alternative that is good?
And finally... anyone can link me to a pretty nice looking case but not too expensive? I was planning on reusing my current Gateway case but that would be too cheap for me :lol

There you go, found it yourself, nice one. That's part of what makes building it yourself worthwhile.

Now, since you don't have an OS yet, you could take a look in the BIOS to see your hardware at work.

Do you have your PC in a air conditioned room? Because if you don't you better get some good cooling seeing as you are a fellow boricua, but you already had built one previously so I'm sure you know that. I have that same CPU and a 4850 gaming at 1680 x 1050 so that rig will serve you well. As for the six cores we'll have to wait for benches but I doubt it will make much difference for gaming. For the mobo and Ram we would need to know the prices.

P.S. Where do you buy your parts? Pretty much every site screws us over 'Ricans here with the shipping costs when it comes to PC parts.

WOAH!!! DUDE!!! i have an Antec 1200 as well and you need to workl on the wire management. you can re-route and zip-tie a lot of those. get to it!

I was about to comment on the horrible cable management but I see that many people reading this thread have the same idea :lol

Your case has all those nice holes around the MB that allow you to route the cables out of sight (and airflow). Use them!

I don't think he really cares about the cable management right now guys. He'll still be jumping with joy at the fact its working :lol .

Yeah temp is a bit of a worry... my current Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86 can easily reach 63C under heavy load when temp is high here.

The mobo price is 119.99 and the memory is around 100, maybe a tad bit more. By the way, I am buying from NewEgg :lol Raping me with the shipping but I can't find a better alternative. If you group it all in one purchase it comes out cheaper, but man do they hit us hard here =/

Yo guys, about to buy a 9800GT. Should I be worried about brand? For example is it ok to go for this misco saver card or this Novatech card. Should I be bothering with 1GB on these cards?
I have a 1080p display and the game I play the most is Team Fortress 2, the 9800GT should easily max those out right?

Rufus said:
Now you just need to get those cables under control and it'll be perfect. :D

That is under control! Because the PSU isn't modular, I couldn't get it to look any nicer. I pushed as many wires as I could into the case slot behind the motherboard, but some wires - like the 24-pin and 8-pin, simply couldn't fit back there and had to be left out. Similar for the SATA cables. I'm too lazy to twist tie the shit that couldn't fit behind the case though.

Those drive cages look snap in. I read a review at Newegg that claimed they were all thumbscrews. That's the Antec 1200?

Yup, the Antec Twelve Hundred. Honestly, though, the whole drive bay/optical drive was more cumbersome than it needed to be.

gregor7777 said:
Yeah, TF2 is more CPU bound than anything.
Thanks :D That's what I thought, only replacing because my 9400GT just doesn't work for anything at 1080p.

Any advice on the brand thing?

Congrats Ami! It is a great feeling to get a computer working after many hours of trying. Welcome to the Master Race ^_^.

I think I finally decided on my upgrade to replace my netbook as my main computer, I will be reusing a 500gb sata hard drive, a dvd-rw optical drive and my el cheapo case for the time being.

Im pretty sure I choose incorrectly on the motherboard + ram but I just went with what was cheap and had very decent reviews.

AMD AthlonX4 630 $100
Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H $80
XFX ATI 4770 VGA $105
Corsair VX 450w PSU $80
2x2GB Corsair DDR2 RAM $100

Total: $455

Any modifications that you guys think can be made? How will this computer fare against some of the new games available? ME1, ME2, MW2, BBC2, Crysis (lol?)?

63°C loadtemps isn't too bad tbh.

You're missing some DDR3 RAM mate, I recommend some budget/mainstream kit from a bigger brand, Corsair or something.

Also, I have an external USB DVD writer, instead of internal, sure it's slower but it saves you some cable clutter inside your case and you can easily install a windows/boot from it.

End of april, we should start seeing some benches then. Performance? I don't know, I guess it's going to be pretty good, looks like they're going to try to compete with the i7 930 (when you check the prices)

Yeah, um, don'y buy a 9800GT in this day and age. At 1080p, I'd highly recommending stretching to a 5770 if you can. If not, this card will net you a lot more performance for a similar price:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190648

The 5670 is a decent option as well, performance is about the same as a 9800GT but it sucks a lot less power, is DX11 ready and about £10 cheaper the XFX 5670 on ebuyer.com is a good choice.

Stretch to a 1GB 5770 if you can, you could perhaps spend a little less on the PSU to accomodate this. This is modular, $60 + $20 rebate and more than sufficient for that sort of rig:

Memory: Kingston 2GB DDR3-1333MHZ
Case: Thermaltake V3 Black Edition Mid Tower Case With 450W PSU

Budget: About £650 (at a push 700)
Main Use: Gaming

It's been a long time coming but I'm finally ready to get a decent pc; seeing the witcher 2 videos was the final push I needed. It'd be nice to have it run on full but I need to be able to play both it, ff14 and bad company 2 more than anything else.

Video of my case in action with all the fans running and shit. The noise level is retarded :lol

Now that I hear it, I think I may just have to invest in some quieter fans...

At first I was thinking, yes, there's some vibration going on, but then you said you were going to turn it on. :lol Was your camera making that sound?

Anyway, six fans (nine or ten really, your PSU has one or two as well), plus a lot of holes is not going to be silent. If you're not going to overclock anything, why buy a case like this?

Yeah, the camera i have makes that annoying hum when I film. Probably something with the audio settings that I'm too lazy to fix.

All the fans are most likely running at 100%... that'll be loud. If you can turn them down to 50% you'll notice a huge difference in loudness. And since you aren't overclocking, it's completely safe to turn the fan speed down.

You can always unplug some fans if they are not needed in order to keep the temp down.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is what it is. You'll be able to change the fan speeds when you install your motherboard drivers and software.
