"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

i looked at my HDD health, and it said warning because a bad sector had been replaced. is this cause for concern?
http://slickdeals.net/?pno=36348&lno=1&afsrc=1 is this a good drive?
could i clone my current C drive to it?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-22136319-L07A this one is $55 after promo code

looking for performance moreso than space really, I only have a 250gig drive now(actually have 3 of them but they aren't raided, so I count them separately and I have plenty of space on the other two. just for back up data though since they are 1.5gb/s)

I don't know if you remember from last week but we were talking about the XIV benchmark.

Won't be doing LAN so I don't care if it's heavy or not. I just want the best air flow really.

I'm also wondering if I should go for a better video card or not, but there doesn't seem to be much in the $200ish price range. Goes from $180 to $300 from what I saw.
Mobo link is broken. Any reason for i7 vs an i5?
Intel 40GB + Samsung 1TB
I'd nab a Antec 900 if you want airflow.

As I've been saying nVidia should launch the GTX 460 ($200-$230) in 8 days. That should hopefully shake up things. Expect reviews in a few days.

The 5770/GTX 260 should be $130 instead of what it is now.

Bad sectors are never good, but I can't really tell you about HDD health. Run SMART and post the results and see if someoen can help you.
I'd get the 1TB Samsung, it's one of the fastest with 2x500GB platters. If you need 1TB you can get a 500GB samsung or a 640GB Western Digital. (500GB is faster)

Would a Q6600 bottleneck a 5770?
Depends on the game. It won't bottleneck if you overclock it though.

No. I love my 6600 and have it paired with a 4870 which is basically what you're looking at now. I ran it stock for the first while but I'm running at 3.4Ghz now and the difference on the whole machine is fairly noticeable. Don't bother upgrading your C2Q but that puppy is built for overclocking.

Before I go to ebay, I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in purchasing a QX9770 (~$600), GTX 295 (~$300) or a 790i SLI FTW (~$200)?

Here's what I'm looking to build. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I'm open to suggestions about the case. I read a review on Newegg where the user had a hard time installing the mobo I picked into this case, but there was only one such review. The Antec 300 and 900 seem to be popular. Any specific pros or cons for each?

Hey guys! Sorry to post again, but I couldn't purchase before and now I had to change things up again to save some money. I'm thinking about firing away at this one within the next hour so what do you guys think about this?

Please let me know ASAP. Thanks so much for your help GAF!

What kind of temps are you getting at 3.4GHz? And what cooler? I had mine at 3.2GHz, but temps were way too high, loads nearing 70c. Right now at 3.0 my load temps never break 55c. Maybe my chip is just a bad overclocker? 3.0GHz is stable at 1.3125, stock vcore, but at 3.2Ghz, I have to increase the vcore as much as 1.35.

Edit: Wow, I didn't realize how close our builds are....only difference is the mobo/cpu. Nice.

I don't have any experience/trust raidmax. I try to stick with the more well known brands like Corsair, Antec, Cooler Master, OCZ, Rosewill, Seasonic. I don't know if brands like Zalman have reputable PSUs even though you see many of their products elsewhere in PCs. Often you can find the higher end PSUs on sale for a great price which makes the upgrade worth it but if you can save a significant amount of money go with a 450W+ unit instead of the 650.

I started looking up units but have run out of time and noticed the 450W units don't have the 2-6pin plugs you'll need. Look at those brands at the 500W+ range where they start to have 2-6 pins.

I'm using the Tuniq tower and believe my temps max out around the 55ish as well. I'm out of town away from my computer so I can't check voltages. I really wanted to hit 3.6 but I couldn't figure out how to get it stable so it's running a little lower now. Your experience sounds normal. It's typical to hit 3.0 on stock voltage. If you already have it at 3.0 you're already getting quite a bit of improvement so don't worry about any bottlenecking.

Both of you are buying a 650W PSU for systems with 5850's in them that will never peak above 350W even under stress testing.
You don't want to run your PSU at anywhere near its maximum capacity. 50-60% is just about right.

Hazaro said:
Are you sure you don't want to wait 2 weeks? The GTX460 should slot in at the ~$220 mark and be nice for 1080p. Like I said it might drop down prices across the board as well.
I'll give him a heads up and let him decide. Thanks, again.

SapientWolf said:

That's simply not true. 80% at load is more than enough to cover any circumstances. Paying extra to run a larger PSU at 50% for the 2% of the time you'll need it at 50% is just stupid. People who buy kilowatt PSUs aren't called enthusiasts, they are called suckers. (Unless you're going SLI GTX 480 cards :S)

I'm looking for a certain case someone posted earlier in this thread. It was a $99 mid-tower, soft edges, and had it's own website. It's supposed to release in July.

Anyone know?

My god the Tuniq tower is massive. Must have been a pain in the ass to mount that thing. Yea, I guess I'll just stick with 3.0.

How well will this config run Starcraft II?

Intel Core,i5-450M (2.4-2.66Ghz, 3M/4 threads)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, 1GB
Intel X25 SSD drive

(It's a laptop)

Yeah, it's kind of a beast. Voltage will increase your temperatures a lot faster than bumping up the frequency. Part of the personality of the Q6600 is that it has sort of an OC hole around 3.2Ghz where it doesn't seem to like to stay. You might have more luck trying to find a stable 3.4 rather than 3.2.

What are some of the GAF OC results for the 5770? I'm currently sitting at 950/1400 from 875/1225.

Not bothering OCing my Core i5 750. I'll let Turbo Boost do its thing since I've been looking over some overclocking benchmarks and it's really not worth OCing anymore (For gaming anyway).

FutureMark lied to me. 950/1400 was not stable at all. I ran FurMark (20-25 min run) and managed to get my 5770 stable at 950/1300.

Love how effective FurMark is at taxing the GPU.

That's rather vague, particularly with the $90-100 range being one of the more crowded price brackets. Can you recall anything else about the case?

Color? Features? Door? Brand (or even any letters in the brand's name)?

I believe the last few pages have mainly touched on some of the already released usual mid-tower suspects

That's what I told myself, but after reading that SC2 is so dependent on CPU clock speed, I decided to just bump it up above 3.0 Ghz. Next thing I know I'm completely obsessed with tweaking my PC. Unfortunately, I can't think of much else to do now beyond adding a second graphics card.

Surprised how little most prices have gone down recently. I built my computer in January and it seems that it would still be around the same price now. In other years, you could have gotten a system possibly twice as good after six months. Perhaps its the recession and lack of new console hardware finally catching up to us.

I remember when I build my computer. I built one for my brother 6 months later for $100 more that destroyed mine spec wise, this was 4 years ago though lol.

Even better airflow or sound characteristics. Reducing dust. Improved bridge and mosfet cooling, etc... I can go on... Not that any of if is needed or anything, but that's never stopped anyone before.

That's the other problem, when you get into this range it's only slightly more expensive to get more wattage and connectors. Better to be spend $10-20 more on something that will last unless you are going low budget imo.

And I have the money so I thought I would get a little more performance out of it.
Just overclock an i5 if you want performance. No need to go i7 unless you want $600 in dual graphics cards or you need 8 or 12 threads. See top of page for i5 builds.

I'm sure I could work on the cable management. There's good airflow but it's not the prettiest. I also think I could get the CPU up to 4.0 Ghz. I think I lucked out and got a pretty damn good CPU. My voltage is pretty low and it's stable at 3.7 Ghz.

It's actually an i7 930 but I'm not a big risk taker. The only reason I've taken it as far as I have is because it remained stable without raising the voltage (1.215v) after my initial overclock.

Overclock is determined by the BIOS.

Fair enough. In the interest of science I dug this up from 2 years ago
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=392354

For some reason it booted at 8.5x instead of 9. Would have been over 4.7, but I was really pushing the voltage and my heatsink was all messed up.

Really sticks home how stagnant computers have gotten. Software isn't catching up either :[
I'm still on the same mobo, been a real trooper with me abusing it. :lol

They've definitely hit a wall when it comes to CPU clockspeed. Maybe I'll grow a pair and see what it really can do but the thought of frying my new build isn't something I want to deal with right now.

started putting a build together today.. trying to make my initial splurge sub 1k and got it close.. /shrug.

AMD PhenomII x6 1090T
ASUS Crosshair IV
8GB(4x2G) DDR3 (1333/10666)
Antec 902 case

.. planning on swapping my Geforce 9800 GT (512MB) into the machine for the time being.. might look at something newer later this year.

looking at HDD's as well.. have my eye on a WD 1TB 7200 drive with 32MB cache and supposed 6G/sec xfer rate, but considering a SSD as well.. haven't really decided on that one yet. newegg ships it for $933 with the HDD.. a local shop here sells it for $1016 with the HDD as well... decisions decisions.

I've been wondering if anyone knows what's going on with Newegg's pricing on the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 and Hyper 212 Plus?

Cooler Master Hyper TX3 $29.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103064&cm_re=tx3-_-35-103-064-_-Product

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus $49.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...03065&cm_re=hyper_212+-_-35-103-065-_-Product

I noticed the 212+ went up in price prior to Newegg's recent price "increases" (seems it's been $50 for about 2 weeks or so) and now the TX3 has followed suit. At $17-20 for the TX3 and $20-25 for the 212+, those two made a fantastic price/performance combo. The TX3 is a great cooler but it isn't nearly as tempting at $30. For $50, I wouldn't even look twice at a 212+ (isn't the MSRP ~$30?).

My Q9550 is still running at a lowly 2.8GHz so don't feel bad. I had it at 3.2 for a brief period, but I think I'll wait until I get a replacement mobo to go up to a moderate 3.6-3.8 clock.

On that note, can anyone suggest a better board for the price than Gigabyte's GA-EP45-UD3P? I need a new home for my chip and while I'd prefer Asus, I haven't seen a P45 that tops the UD3P overall. I'd like to have the 8 sata ports (I actually need more, but I'll have to get a controller card for the extra drives), dual lan and other features. I'd rather not buy a 775/DDR3 board or go past the UD3P's price. Obviously, with the 1355/2011 sockets coming soon, I don't plan on spending a lot on outdated tech, so I believe that cancels out any worthwhile P48 options.

This particular build will be seeing duty as a general purpose PC with heavy HTPC use.

Any suggestions?

Value wise the 1055 is much better, especially if you are overclocking. The motherboard can easily bring down another $100 if you get a cheaper one (Do you really need dual 16x?).
That money saved will be so much better spent on a new GPU later + SSD. Two really important things :D

Those prices were the prices on newegg.ca iirc. Are you sure you weren't on that link by mistake?

I can't say I know of any mobos like that, so if you searched on newegg (Use advanced search) and didn't find anything then your guess is as good as mine.

If you do find something though, always make sure to check it for specifics issues.

Glad it's working.
Check your CPU temps (realtemp) under load (run orthos/occt/prime95). That should also check if it is stable, hopefully it stays under 70C.
I'm also asking because unless you reapplied the thermal paste the bond might not be the best, but you can get paste for $5 online.
You should dedust your heatsink too.

If I had to guess it is a driver issue. Post it on ATi forums or what have you and see what they respond with. I remember FarCry 2 making rainbow textures on ATi cards as well.

The user reviews are a little better. I haven't had any issues, personally. It is a bit more expensive though but maybe it can be found elsewhere cheaper.

I guess the advantages over the MB you posted are usb3 and sata 6GB.
