"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Hello guys.

I'm looking for a good monitor for a future build that could work well my consoles. I live in a dorm and a tv isn't an option for me.

Unless it's some sort of rare engineering sample that has a different default clock speed, then yes. Overclocks aren't stored in the CPU in any way.

Hazaro said:
Those prices were the prices on newegg.ca iirc. Are you sure you weren't on that link by mistake?

I can't say I know of any mobos like that, so if you searched on newegg (Use advanced search) and didn't find anything then your guess is as good as mine.

If you do find something though, always make sure to check it for specifics issues.
Yeah, that's what made it so strange; the links I posted are from Newegg.com. I even added the Hyper 212+ to my shopping cart when I first noticed the discrepancy and there was no difference. Would seem like a pricing error, but again, it has been $50 for some time now. I believe that NE.ca and NE.com are generally pooling content so I'd imagine the slip up stems from that.

Unfortunately, Newegg no longer stocks the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P and Amazon has it overpriced. Or, at least they used to as the board doesn't appear to be listed by them anymore, either. With an asking price of $140 Ewiz looks to be the last reasonably priced reliable seller that I can think of.

Unless I come across any other retailer/mobo options - or anyone suggests one to me - I'll likely end up waiting for Ewiz to do another $10-15 off code and buy the UD3P from them.

Thanks, Hazaro.

Also, keep in mind that with the difference in components and other surrounding factors, there's no guarantee that you will be able to clock that particular i7 as high as your friend has. Conversely, your set up may actually allow you to hit a higher stable overclock than his.

What are some of the GAF OC results for the 5770? I'm currently sitting at 950/1400 from 875/1225.

My Vapor gets 960/1360 @ 50% fan usage under load and I know the core can hit over 1Ghz with the right software I just like everything nice and quiet. Plus, I'll be Xfire'd soon anyway.

I'm pretty much brain dead when it comes to the matters of overclocking. I'll give it a shot down the line though. when I do my research.

Will this Antec Earthwatts 650 be enough to run an OC'd x4 620 and two 5770's in Xfire?

http://www.ewiz.com/desc.php?name=PS-EA650

But first I'm going to order another Vapor-X 5770. Use coupon code SUNSHINE15 to get 15% or $15 off. Total =$154.99. Eh, not bad.

I'm so Kwayzee.. doing the xfire thang... just cause I can.. even if I coulda just got me uh 5900 or sometin' .. But you gottsta experiments to become experienced.

How can I fiure out the exact model of my motherboard and wattage of my power supply without opening my computer? I don't have the money for a completely new rig but I figure I should at least update my graphics card (9500 GT :/) and I want to know what I can buy and if it'll be compatible.

Probably getting a bit more money from something, so I want to get a laptop to accommodate PS2 emulation instead of just FFXIV. I was wondering if the specs for this laptop I'm looking at are good to run FFXII International with extra AA and whatever looks awesome magic emulation can do:

I'm looking for a monitor to replace my current one, which has been losing it's signal to the video card whenever the wire connecting the monitor to the video card is moved. I determined that the part of the wire that is connecting directly to the back of monitor is where the loose connection is. What's a good, cheap monitor that costs around $100 - $150 that is under 22"?

Also, I was wondering, can a loose connection between the monitor and the video card do any sort of damage to the card? I won't be able to get a new monitor for a few weeks, so I'm going to be using this one for the time being.

I haven't kept up with emulation updates but when I played FFXII on PC I ended up just giving up and played it on my PS3 in 480p 4:3 with a boot disk. I know the emulator only supports 1 core and it likes speed. 3.33Ghz should run it nicely but anything under 2.8-3.0 and you might see problems. Also the emulator has tons of controller lag from what I experienced which is another reason I just stuck with a real PS2/PS3.

The son of my boss wants a new gaming PC. He made a list of the parts he wants, but it's quite expensive so he asked my advice.
I used to follow pc hardware, but haven't since the last generation of consoles. The list looks a bit overkill though, with most parts being cutting edge for the sake of being the newest, instead of real world performance.

The boy is now playing his games on an 2 year old Acer laptop, so I think he got most of his info from a forum instead of really knowing what's best for him.

This is his list:

Asus EAH5850 ATI
Windows 7 home premium
Intel I7-930
Antec Truepower Quattro 1000w
Aerocool vx-e pro le tower case
Asrock X58 mainboard
Corsair DIMM 6 GB DDR3
Samsung 1.5 TB HD154UI

Total price: 1594 euro

Any advice on this? Or on a system that is well fit for games without spending 1600 euro? I think he plays Modern Warfare etc most of the time.

Don't you want to wait a few weeks and see what happens with 5850/5870 pricing? Besides, I thought you mentioned selling your current card and just going with a single 5850.

Is the system pre-built? Just Googling it should give you most of the specs and you can even find exact breakdowns of each part if you look around.

Another option would be to use hardware reporting programs like the following.

The last program may not be as well know as the first two, but it's from the same people behind CCleaner, Piriform. I actually recommend trying it out. You'll get temp readings of your CPU, GPU, and HDDs. Along with model numbers, bios, chipset and revision versions, you also get fairly thorough breakdowns of your HDDs and ram (health, timing, etc.).

Need to cool my GTX 470 down but I don't have water cooling, anyone know if there is any other options? Ive search the internet but I can't find any aftermarket coolers. Any ideas?

Budget: Price Range + Country
Main Use: Gaming, Video editing, or just general usage
Monitor Resolution: What resolution will you be playing your games at? Are you going to upgrade later?
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: Self Explanatory

Been lurking in this thread for awhile. It's time for me to build a new PC but I have the hardest time choosing parts for myself.

Budget: 1,000 / US
Main Use: Gaming
Monitor Resolution: 1680 x 1050, most definitely be upgrading later
Specific games: FFXIV, WoW, SC2, Diablo 3, The Witcher, and the eventual Star Wars mmo.

Hey all (going to post in the B/S/T trade but this is the target market) I have this GPU thats barely been used (~a month) that I'm willing to part with (upgrade to the 5970):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121382

ASUS ROG MATRIX 5870 P/2DIS/2GD5 Radeon HD 5870 Platinum 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Newegg sells it for $519, I'll sell it for $475 shipped. It has original packaging (and MIR).

Let me know if you want pictures, etc.

After much debate I think I'm going to hold off on upgrading the main components (motherboard, processor, RAM and video card) in my current PC until after FFXIV comes out and I can see how well it actually runs.

In the meantime I would like to do a bit of upgrading to other things to get it running as silent as possible.. what would be my best choice for a silent power supply as well as silent 120mm fans?

I was reccomended the Intel X25M SSD on here a few months ago and was wondering if this is still the one that everyone loves? The price hasnt dropped too much and Im STILL on the fence trying to justify the price but with FFXIV so close, I might just bite the bullet. Id love to get FFXIV running as good as possible and I read that SSDs are good for MMOs.

What about the cheaper 40GB Intel X25V? I guess installing Windows 7 and XIV on that would be cutting it too close I guess (probably over 30GBs).

demosthenes said:
I don't think 40GB will be enough for Windows + FFXIV, maybe at the start but I really really doubt after the first expansion.
Yeah 80GB has got to be the way to go.

I need 200 bucks

Hey guys.
Got crummy 300W power supply. I there any semi decent video card out there that'll work with that, or should i go ahead and get a new PSU?
I knoz nothing! Thanks for the help!

I've been looking to build a new $800 to 1000 PC but I'm not sure if I can save some money with an existing Windows 7 installer I have. I have a laptop that had Vista on it initially but I got win7 to replace that sometime last year. Now, can I just reinstall Vista on the laptop and then use my same Windows 7 installer and product key for my new desktop? Will I run into any problems activating the key?

I'd really appreciate any help as a new Windows 7 installer is pretty much the difference between a 5770 and 5850.

Woah that doesn't make much sense though... Is he using a school-provided product key? I've only heard of Microsoft Office Home/Student Edition having 3 active installs but never for a Windows OS since XP. MMmmm confused here

I can't imagine that Microsoft licensing information comes up very frequently in the average doctorate level computer science course.

I believe that's false. I use a MSDNAA copy and installed it on one PC. I then installed it on the same box (but with a new MB and CPU) and I had to call in to get it to install. It treated it as a new PC, so I assume then I only got one active install.

EDIT actually come to think of it I never got around to doing the reinstall but it detected the new MB/CPU anyhow and told me I had to call to activate.

it wasn't a problem after I used the automated phone system, but still. it's pretty clear I only got one active install.

Okay found this on the web. Looks like his friend had a Family Pack, hence the 3 active installs. I just have the regular disc copy so it looks like I only get one install, and after the phone activation, the older install stops working/validating.

Guys,

I've been putting this off forever. But now I really need a new PC. I'm pretty much going to use the thing for Valve and Blizzard games, and maybe FFXIV and Old Republic so I don't think I need a powerhouse.

What I do need is less headaches. Anybody have a good build between $1000-1400 from a place that'll assemble for me?

You did note that to have USB 3.0 / SATA 3.0 you need the PRO version of the ASUS board with the PLX chip, right? Just double checking. (I'd really recommend waiting a week for GTX460 news though)

At the 1k pricepoint the core build should remain the same: (Pick 1 mobo, 1 case+psu, decide if you want an SSD) but in 1 week we will have GTX460 news which should shake up the GPU market.

Do you really need to cool it down? Stock works plenty well most of the time and they can tolerate very high temps (85C+ load). Most aftermarket coolers are becoming more expensive.

As for PSU I can personally suggest Corsair 520HX and 620HX. The fan spins so slowly I thought it was broken and is completely silent. There are other quiet and silent models out there, but I can't recall anything.
Do some digging here and maybe ask their forums: http://www.silentpcreview.com/Recommended_PSUs

The longer you can hold off on buying SSD the better. New models are constantly coming out.
The Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB looks to be an excellent buy that just came out, offering a whopping 330MB/s read speed and respectable 80MB/s write. For just $150.

Buy from NCIX. They will put your computer together for $50. It's in the OP :D
Something like this would be a good start (You'll want to swap the GPU), both Brain_stew and I should have new builds up soon for FFXIV and StarCraft II. New GPU will hit in a week and should mix a few things up. Since you are so under budget you might consider throwing in an SSD :)

Usually laptops only have OEM versions installed which means you can only install it to that one motherboard, and they often force you to use the manufacturers restoration partitions etc. to do it. If you have the Win7 upgrade disc I heard there was some sort of workaround to getting it to do a full install, not sure how legit that is though.

Good luck.

That is one expensive build for a computer with a 4850. The Antec 300 is just as good a case and it's $20 cheaper. Also you ought to use combos instead of buying everything separately.

Is it just me or are computer part prices rising? It's so hard to build a 5770-quad-core build for $600; right now it's $650-670 even with rebates and combos. Maybe I'll just get a GTS 250 and a fast dual-core, which will be fine for what I'm playing.

Why the fuck do I even care about this shit? I'm going to college with a netbook in a month so I can't even play any PC games until Christmas! I'm just so obsessed with building a gaming PC. Will there be any new $150-200 GPUS and <$100 CPUs by then?

Hazaro, does NCIX have different websites for US and Canada? I'm having a hard time finding some of the stuff you listed on the site.

EDIT: God, this is frustrating. You search "AMD" on the NCIX website and you get zero results.

NCIX is the only one I'm seeing that builds from the parts you select. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy from MAINGEAR or something. Its twice as much but seems like way less headache.

Maingear is great, but they are extremely expensive :lol

That's why the Antec 300 is in the newegg wishlist link.
AMD x4 635+ GTX460 looks to be like a nice spot.

I don't check daily for combos since they jump around a lot and I'd have to look at each component. Most of the time you can get the same price by buying what parts you need.

Yeah 80GB has got to be the way to go.

I need 200 bucks

Dude just get a 1.5 TB Western Digital Caviar Black with 64 MB cache. They are like 90 to 110 bucks. A 1TB one is probably like 70
