Very decent if you can pick one up around the $100 mark. Otherwise you're better off just going with a 5770 imo. Performs about the same as a 4850/GTS 250/5750.

I saw some benchmarks where the 9800GT beats the 4770. I think the 250 or 5750 are more powerful. I can't make up my mind over the last two for my build. The 5750 is smaller and runs super quiet and cool but it gets beaten by the 250 in NTWIWMTBP games, some of which I want to play, but I'm still leaning toward the 5750. Is the 5750 a good overclocker? Is it a good choice for Crossfiring in the future? I don't care about DX11 or Eyefinity, I just want the most powerful option. The 5770 is too expensive for an option, I want something between $100 and $140.

Definitely all types of genres. Certainly, FPS will be a big one. Minimal ghosting plz.

If FPS gaming is a big point Amir0x, then obviously you'll want a TN panel (not that you could afford a IPS one with a target of $300 anyways).

If you want a 3D/120Hz monitor, there's only 3 of them on the market AFAIK.

That's the order they've come out in. Obviously, response is not an issue for any of them, but price may be. The colors get better as you go down the list, and the Acer is a 24" (1900x1080, 16:9), not a 22". It's got an HDMI port, but 1.3a can't 120hz.


Regular TN panels are a little cheaper. Here's a few recommendations.

None of those are 24" (minus the T240, which I own and spent hours researching before I got it), which would bug me to no end. Anyways, the Asus is 1920x1200, 16:10. Other than that, I'm not going to dig up all the little details about each monitor. I can vouch for the Asus one though, a friend of mine owns it. But they're all very solid choices as gaming monitors.


Really, any choice here won't have response times and ghosting as a problem. The T240 I own isn't as fast as any of these choices (not by much though), and it is not noticeable at all, and I have a pretty sharp eye. I've played Crysis and CS on it, for reference.

If you do order a monitor though, get it through NCIX(US).

It was mid range. I had one before I built my new rig about a month ago. Very good card for the money. They run cool, are very quiet and have good performence to boot. It should cope with most things you throw at it provided you don't get too ambitious with the resolution and keep the AA settings dialed down.

They overclock like beasts as well with ease. I had mine clocked to 4870 performence levels and it never missed a beat. The best ATI card for a long time IMO when it comes to price/performence ratio.

Same applies to you as well though if the 5770 is now in your price range (since its price keeps dropping) then its the obvious choice. I wouldn't pay anything more than $100 for a 4770 though.

The GPU is a 5730 which is a 128 bit GPU with GDDR3 memory so its actually slower than even a 9600GT in terms of desktop parts. Its a >$1000 machine with gaming performance significantly worse than what you'd get from a $100 desktop GPU with limited or no GPU upgrade options. Its no bad, but it is what it is.


Since someone mentioned Dell's 11" gaming machine its worth noting Anand just reviewed it here:

Between the two I'd definitely take the Dell, about 3x as much battery life, considerably more portable and gaming performance isn't all that different once you OC the processor in the BIOS. I'd still recommend a super portable CULV machine + a ~$600 desktop of course (maybe in a m-atx or m-itx case) for the same money as just one of these machines but I think the Dell is the better compromise, personally. Amazingly it actually can game on the go for two hours.

So guys, I have a bit of spare cash at the minute and I'm considering upgrading my PC. At the minute, it's running a 1GB 4850 and an Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz.

I'm going to have to grab a new motherboard for upgrading the processor, and I was considering grabbing a Phenom II X4 965 3.40GHz. That processor with a motherboard hits just around the £200 mark. I keep seeing people grabbing i3, i5 and i7s, but the prices on those seems so much more expensive. Are the Intel processors really that much more worth it?

As for the graphics card, is there really a big jump between the 5700 and 5800 ATi cards?

Depends how much you want to spend, I can say from experience that the 5770 runs much cooler than the 4850 whilst using less power (obviously), the performance gain is also noticeable, though not huge. Personally I'd get the 5770 (which I did do) although I also wanted 1G of VRAM which helped my decision.

Putting something in the OP about Intel Vs AMD might be a good idea as people seem to keep asking the same question.

If you've got the money and you want to do lots of heavy NON gaming processing, then get an i7, otherwise AMD is great for gaming and general use.

Well the E8400 is one of the best dual cores coming out of the last generation of CPUs. For some it might be worth upgrading to a quad core but if I was in your situation I would keep the C2D and overclock the snot out of it. If you just throw in a couple more stick of memory and a decent GPU you'll have yourself a solid gaming machine and money left over in your pocket.

MX518 for the mouse, can't be beat for the price, it was available for like $25 the other day, it still might be, have a look a few pages back.

You'll find pretty much everyone in this thread plays console games to some degree, so i don't see why you'd be "afraid" to admit that.




They're certainly not ideal HTPC components, that's for sure. It would depend on the case, airflow and whether or not you're using a nice custom HS/F for your CPU/GPU. It can definitely be done, but you'll have to think it through.

It seems in 2007 Microsoft announced cross compatible gaming with GFWL, but I have yet to see anything concrete on people actually playing together. I'm primarily concerned about Borderlands, but I'd love to see a database that lists all of the games if there are any at all.

You could get by on some mid-range cards with that PSU but it would cripple your ability to overclock. In your situation I'd just upgrade the PSU now with the money you've set aside and get something solid enough for anything you'll run in the future as well. Something like the corsair 550VX or 650TX. Shouldn't ever have to worry about your PSU again unless you do something crazy like running several power hungry GPUs (or just 2 fermi's )

Why do you need a new motherboard? If your board can take an Athlon ii it can take a Phenom ii. The 965 is way overpriced imo, either get the 955 or wait for the hexa cores.

I don't think he will, a Dell 305w PSU should power a 5770 with little trouble, things may get iffy if it doesn't have a PCIe power cable or spare MOlex power cables though.

I'd be using it for a lot of Photoshop and gaming from time to time.

Did you try underclocking the card during 2d mode. Sure, this is not gonna solve the noise problem during load, but the card should be pretty much unnoticeable in idle mode.

Takes you about 10-20 minutes with rivatuner (creating profiles, autoswitching from 2d to 3d clocks etc.).

All considered your right, its not that bad of a price jump. I didn't even notie the resolution drop though. I was thinking about doing the RGB LED display anyway - a bit expensive but from what I've read its pretty amazing.

It doesn't make much sense to me as the 3670 would really struggle with a 1920x1080 screen. I prefer to base my screen resolution around my GPU as when you run anything but the native resolution it usually ends up looking like ass. I'd rather have a lower resolution screen that I would get good framerates on than a higher resolution screen I'd have to suffer lower visual settings or stretched non-natural resolution. Even with the 4670 I wouldn't want above 1600x900

Is my current 600wt Thermaltake PSU still good for the i7 and 6gb of Ram?

I have two identical 1tb 7200rpm Western Digital drives. Is Raid 0 worth it? Or should I just set it up Raid 1 to mirror the drive?

A quality 750W PSU will suffice for that setup, assuming you aren't planning to go Fermi SLI.

I know I should probably ask this in the tech thread but I couldn't find it and this one always seems more active.

I really don't know what to do about my surround system setup with my PC. I have Acer Aspire M7720(i7 920 + Radeon 4870 1GB) and I am at a loss at how to fix my problem. I have been getting strange sound glitches/problems in several games.

I have a small denon receiver and the normal 5.1 setup. The problem is that it seems like my computer is only setup for computer speaker style 5.1. So there are different jacks on the back for Center/sub/side/etc. This causes a problem because my speakers are already directly connected to the receiver. So for example in the windows sound/realtek setup only the speakers corresponding to the current plugged in jack will work when tested.

What am I doing wrong? Is there no way to fix this so that I will stop having these audio problems?

The most perplexing thing is that it seems that my PC is supposed to have a HDMI slot but it is missing or really well hidden. a HDMI jack shows up in the hardware lists and everything, but I sure as hell can't find the actual port.

600w is fine, unless you are using sth. like 2xHD5870.

I'm using a 550w for my i7 860, 8GB RAM, 5850, and two 7200 RPM drives. No problems.

I saw the Dell Vostro 430 desktop line with i7 860 and 8GB of ram selling very cheap, you probably need to buy your own gpu like 5770 to complete an affordable i7 gaming rig!
