"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Planning on building a PC for the first time. I'm in no rush but I would like to get it set up by the end of Summer (unless the deals are good enough around the holidays that I should wait until then).

I'd like to know when if anyone has any suggestions on different components (any bottlenecks or overkills):

Intel Core i7-875K Lynnfield 2.93GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Unlocked Desktop Processor $330
GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD4P LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard $160
XFX HD-585X-ZAFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit $295
COOLER MASTER RC-692-KKN2 CM690 II Advanced Black Steel ATX Mid Tower $90 (free shipping) I like the look of the case, no idea what the quality is like.
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V $60 after MIR (seems like a good deal so I may bite now)
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb $95
Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) $105
SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223L $20
Total: 1155

I'm also looking to get the components as cheap as possible as I'm in no rush. So if you guys know of any traditional deals, expect certain components to go down in price (if next gen stuff is coming out), or any shopping tips in general I'd really appreciate it. Been a long time since I've had a gaming PC so thanks.

Got my parts from ups! I will start building my rig when I get home later.

I also got myself two extra 120mm case fans (blue illuminated) for my Antec 300.

I can't wait to get home. :D

I didn't see the minus sign O_o. I'll check on CoreTemp in just a sec, and see what it gives me.

EDIT:

Basically what SpeedFan said, but without the minus sign :lol.
That's real warm for a stock q6600 at those loads. Are you sure the cooler is attached properly? Did you use thermal grease?

Ok, here's what I've bought ... should be here Thursday:

Antec Three Hundred Gaming Case External 3 X 5.25; Internal 6 X 3.5 2*Usb2.0
Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750-Watt TX Series 80 Plus Certified Power Supply
Intel Core i7 860 Processor 2.80 GHz 8 MB LGA1156 CPU
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 1 GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express
Samsung 1 TB Spinpoint 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA

Grand total of $1040.

Oh ya ... did I forget anything? :)

I would lose the 875 and replace with the 750. Hyperthreading is not necessary and you won't be hitting too many OC ceilings with the 750 (I have mine at 4GHz, friend at 4.2-4.4 on water).
I have that motherboard and it's brilliant.
CM690 II is a fantastic case. I wish I had gotten it instead of my CM Sniper. It is really roomy inside for it's size and everything is coated in black paint. It's great.
Power supply looks good, if you plan to dual GPU ever then think about getting the 750W Corsair TX.
With the money you save on the CPU you should:

a. invest in some better ram. Get something that is at least DDR3 1600. My G.skill eco serves me well but read around what the hot value ram is right now.
b. Buy an aftermarket cooler such as COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus (works really well and can be found cheap). For this also read reviews to find out what's the best in value currently in the 120mm range.

Thanks for the response. Further investigation confirms the 750 is indeed the better choice for me. The difference in FPS definitely doesn't justify the extra $150. Yeah, these 1600 G.skills look better.

Pretty pumped about this venture but I'm going to try to hold off for deals over the next two months until I have everything. Edit: If any of the prices I posted above are particularly good, bad, or expected to drop within the next 2 months, I'd love to know.

I think the cooler is attached properly, and I used the thermal paste that came on the cooler. I've ordered some Arctic Silver 5 to use, but my other temperatures are all too high as well...

Alright, with advice from you guys, and multiple other locations, I think I've found my build. Prices aren't 100% what's shown as I'll be on the lookout for better deals. But I was hoping some kind soul would let me know if everything I have thus far is compatibile and all I need to use the PC (once built) for now.

I have a mouse, keyboard, monitor and CD Drive. So if I put everything together and wasn't planning on overclocking right away, would this computer be ready to be used? Do all necessary fans and wires come with the purchases?

Guys, a friend of mine, have a pretty old PC, and asked me how to upgrade it a bit, for a little price These are the specs:

- ASROCK LGA775 CONROEXFIRE
- PRO INTEL CORE 2 DUO 1,86 GHZ
- RAM DDR-2 1GB 533MHZ
- ATI RADEON X1300 256

My first thought was: upgrade it all, man.
That's why i ask you, what's more critical here?

That case comes with all the case fans you'll need. Everything is included there. Wonderful case. Best I've ever owned.

As far as wires and everything, yeah, you should be set. Is your CD drive SATA? The MB should come with a few SATA cables in the box.

So that video card has onboard sound on the hdmi out? Wow, that's awesome. Thanks :).

EDIT: Alright well I'm looking at http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371033, 380W. That should be enough power?

Yeah, that computer shouldn't use over 380W and antec is a solid PSU manufacturer. That said, I always like a little leeway with PSUs so I'd go for something at least in the mid-400s-500 as far as wattage is concerned to make any future upgrades a non-issue.

I think I may go AMD x6 this build now... It saves me like 300ish dollars from an i7... Not sure what I want now. :/

I may be wrong, but didn't you post in my thread that the AMD AM3 solution is a stupid idea? At least, I'm judging based on your avatar alone.

Anyway, I'm definitely going with an 1055t/1090 B.E, Asus Crosshair IV, G.Skill 4GB DDR3 1600MHz, and at LEAST two 5850s (I'd prefer 3 of them)

Then, this christmas, I'll go with water cooling. :D

I just refuse to pay $160+ for 6GB of Triple-Channel memory, and it seems, based on AMD's roadmap, that the Crosshair IV will be compatible with AMD's Zambezi release in 2011.

I am looking to put more fans into my corsair 800d. I have the stock fans running currently with my I7 930 on an asus p6x58d premium motherboard. The core Temps are around 54C. Should I get a fan controller and what type of case fans should I go with? I believe the stock fans are 140 MM. I assume I should go with 140MM for the rest. Having problems finding specs on the stock fans. I will post the Temps once I get home from work.

Do any of you use a gaming laptop connected into a larger monitor for gaming? Im debating getting that Dell XPS and connecting it to my apple cinema display. Not sure how well that will work.

Yeah, I'd like to know the results of some of your experiments here as well... ^^

Quick question: What's better for me (1680x1050 monitor and 720p TV)?

4870 1GB (140€) or 5770 512MB (146€)?
1680x1050 is better
4870 will get better FPS, but 5770 has eyefinity and dx11 if that's important to you

I don't think I did... All I said before is going dual core is stupid at this day and age if you intend to game. Quads are cheap as hell. And I prefered intel at the time because I have a microcenter so I can get the i7 930 for same price as an x6 and it's more powerful but the mobo prices kill you with intel.

Edit: And :lol at not wanting to spend $160 on ram but will buy 3 5850s... :P

You'll probably be hard pressed to find someone in this thread at least. It's too expensive for significantly shittier performance.

The Chef said:
So it would be a pretty bad idea then?

In my opinion yes but there are some here who would rather pay a premium for having a gaming laptop. If you're gaming at home a lot I see no reason to not build a desktop for a lot cheaper and better but that's a decision you have to make of what you want.

Well, to be fair, three 5850s will net insane gaming performance, while 6GB of RAM would just be unnecessary, which is why I'm taking the AM3 option (I already own 4GB DDR3 ram)

5850s should get a price drop when nvidia releases their Geforce 465. And in terms of gaming it's pretty clear that having a great GPU setup is more important than a processor/RAM combo. But like, 5850s are more expensive today than they were 7 months ago. WTF?

That's still close to a grand just for your GPU. :P Just saying is all.

I'd love to build another gaming PC but since I need a laptop for work I figured I'd get one decent enough to play games. So when I'm at home I'd like to have it hooked up to a larger monitor on my desk.

Like I said it's up to you but for me for work I want a laptop with more than like an hour battery life. The gaming ones are all shit battery life because they're not meant for that. Again, it's personal preference.

There hasn't been much movement. AMD hasn't really countered i5/i7 heavily and we're still talking about the same graphics cards as 6 months ago. Both AMD and Nvidia have just been rolling out new "in-between" models but not updating or reducing the prices on the 5770, 5850, 5870, etc. Prices will probably remain pretty stagnant through the holidays as Sandy Bridge will no doubt be priced too high at the get-go.

So I got all of my parts and hooked everything up. Only problem is nothing shows up on the monitor. All the fans turn on, lights all over the mobo, gfx card, and case. I also hear the startup beep.

Did you check the cables?
How are you hooked up? If HDMI, make sure the monitor is also set to HDMI. If DVI, make sure the monitor is set to DVI, etc.

Rooky question here (need to confirm before ordering parts), will a 5770/5850, namely these:

Sapphire 5770 1GB - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/189741
XFX 5850 1GB - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/222056

Work on this motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-H55 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/189288

They state DDR5, and i think this is a DDR3 motherboard, but i may be totally overlooking something... The other card i was previously recommended was the GTX260 (which is a DDR3 card i believe). If the 260 is the only one compatible and is no good (for whatever reason) can someone recommend a similar card around the same price point, thanks.

Disregard the memory specs on the GPU when looking at motherboards. The motherboard is talking about system RAM. The memory on the graphics card is dedicated to the GPU, so it has nothing to do with what the MB is talking about.

Both cards are perfectly compatible with that motherboard. As long as it has a PCI express x16 slot (it does), you're good to go.

These days any recent video card will be compatible with any recent motherboard, regardless of brand or spec.

Alright gaf, I need you to be brutally honest with me. Tell me why this early build is terrible and what I can do to improve on it while sticking at my $1500 CND (before tax) budget. I'm a first time builder, but for the love of god, if you need to call me stupid, do it!
Overkill PSU (get 650w), no need for i7 (extra $), older HDD (get the samsung), eh case.

See: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=11141094 for components. Add in GPU of choice. GTX 470 is fine, although you might consider the 5850 if the price difference is enough where you are.

I'd switch the CPU to an i5-750. Unless you have a specific reason for needing 8 threads it is not necessary. (Or if you wanted a 4.4Ghz OC vs a 4.1Ghz)
Case is very nice

Considering I haven't even received the package yet, could I possibly get Newegg to adjust my order to reflect the new price or would that be a no-go?
Give them a ring ASAP. Sometimes they will give you back the difference.
If they don't, call again and try to get another person :lol

It says 4096 mb total memory in the BIOS. Or am I looking at the wrong spot?
Make sure the RAM is seated properly (take it out and put it back), and if it doesn't show then, swap them into the second slot.
If it is still 4GB test each stick manually and see which one is bad.
If all of them work then run memtest86+ from a CD on each to see which errors.

Also make sure the RAM is running at the rated voltage and timing (e.g. 8-8-8-24). This might be under advanced options.

Ah! For some reason it worked when I unplugged them and replugged them in. Thanks for the help :lol

OK, with the Steam sale going on and SCII right around the corner, it's time to build a new system.

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of my 4-year-old machine and it's time to make it a server.

Currently, I have an AMD Athlonx2 4400, 2GB RAM, and nVidia 6800 ultra.

Done laughing? good.

I'm looking at moving up to this:

i5 750
Gigabyte P55 mobo
4GB G.Skill
ATI HD 5850

I have a 24" monitor and want to game at 1920x1200 with eye-candy. From what I've read, for that resolution, the 5850 is the sweet spot, but is there a refresh on the horizon that will push that price down sub-$250?

Thanks gregor!, and a speedy reply to boot!

EDIT: haha steadfast! im not laughing at you, im laughing with you! see those specs are almost spot on my current build, and the parts your looking to purchase are almost identical to mine too! good to see im not alone in this insane world of tech.

Is there any reason I'd get this:
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
over this:
G.SKILL ECO Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

The second has faster speed and costs $10 more. I really don't know enough about RAM to know if it makes a difference (1600 vs 1333).

Also, about the motherboard, I'm looking at this one:
GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD4P
as I've heard good things about it but this one:
GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3
is about $50 cheaper. I don't know enough to understand what warrants the price difference. From the product pages of each the 4P has eSATAII, 2 additional 3 GB/s SATA, IEEE 1394, and Smart TPM. None of that means anything to me and what I could find in my own research didn't help much. I'd like to be able to hold onto the motherboard for quite a while but is it worth it? Any additional help is appreciated.

Okay guys. My PC upgrade game is coming in September. My CPU, Ram and such I will be good with. However, what is the next step of progression from my GTX 260?

The CPU can be overclocked to 3Ghz and 2GB of DDR is manageable so I'd upgrade the GPU first.
THANKS!
For the GPU, are there particular compatibility issues with that MoBO? Or he can go for something like a Nvidia GTX260..
