Amps look good on the 12V, should be fine.

Anything is an upgrade to my current card. Hell, I had a 640mb 8800. 0_obrain_stew said:You got a 768MB card.........
If it bites you in the ass down the road don't say I didn't warn you.
Baloonatic said:I just opened up my case and now I'm not even sure. There's a loose 6-pin PCI-E connector in there, but there must be one connected to my GPU right? :lol
Ebuyer says that it's only meant to have one, but the official site says that it "may have one or two prior to June 2008". Been ages since I did anything with the insides of my computer so I'm confused.
I guess if there's a loose one then I have two, even though I got it December 2008.

Case: Coolmaster HAF 922
CPU: Intel i7 930 (2.80GHz)
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D Premium
RAM: 6GB Corsair XMS3 Tri-DDR 1600MHz (3x2GB)
GPU: 1GB Radeon HD 5870
Still sorting out the other parts like PSU, etc.
Cheers guys!
kinggroin said:Just a guess, but wouldn't a quick way of finding out be to simply check for a pci-e connector attached to the current GPU?
Baloonatic said:Yeah there is, they're even numbered PCI-E 1 and 2. The only reason it confused me was because I checked where I got it from first to save me opening the case and they said it only had one connector.
Nevermind, looks like I'm all set. How difficult is OC'ing a GPU? I'm getting a 460.

4xx series scales in the 80-90% range. It really is impressive.kinggroin said:Yeah :lol
That's DAMN good.
If the performance improvement stayed linear when going SLI, you'd have setup that's faster than a stock 5970 (for this particular game). For around $400. That's ridiculous.
Two things, any fixed pixel monitor will scale whatever signal you're sending to it's native resolution, the better the scaler the better the result (alternatively you can scale through your GPU) so there's always a decrease in IQ when displaying non native content.FleckSplat said:I have a technical question. Why does a monitor NOT turn blurry when playing games at lower-than-native resolutions?
Changing the resolution in Windows does so. What's different about games?
EDIT: Baloonatic: Yes, so I've heard (I'm not an expert).

Secondly, your desktop is 2D where as games are 3D and can be rendered at whatever resolution.

GazzaScotland said:Ah thanks for that! Always good to have just a it of reassurance before dropping money. Looks like it will be a 750W Corsair PSU. Also thanks for the SSD recommendation, been having a look at one to go for.

But yeah, my current PSU should be fine? I don't want to plug it in and have my PC explode ):::

I've had no issues what so ever until I switch over to the tv from my monitor today and the tv seems stuck in 16-bit color depth despite saying otherwise. I've tried resetting the pc, and a host of other things but to no avail. Is anyone familiar with this problem?

Something like this for a general idea. Giving me a price would be good too.EatChildren said:I was thinking, maybe its time to upgrade sometime soon.
EatChildren said:I was thinking, maybe its time to upgrade sometime soon.
My current PC consists mostly of hardware I purchased back in early '06. My setup is;
AMD64 X2 3800+ (OC'd to run at 2.6GHz compared to stock 2.0GHz)
2GB DDR Corsair (OC'd obviously for the above)
8800GT 512mb (OC'd edition)
My original GPU was a 7900GT, I think, but that died because of shitty nVidia heat issues. They replaced it with a card that performed worse but was a newer model, so I sold that and stuck another $50 or so on the sale price and got an 8800GT.
As you can see my PC is old. But sucks to be you guys! The primary reason I havent upgraded is because this badass mother fucker has lasted me very well up until now. Thats right. A vast majority of the games I've wanted to (and in some cases still want to) play can be maxed out at 1920x1080 and run smooth. I do most of my gaming on PC, so I'm happy as a pig in shit that I've been able to keep most of this setup (the videocard the only thing changing) and have it meet all my needs.
Sure, I could be one of those people that upgrade every six months because they want to squeeze out another 5 - 10fps, but I'm not that stupid (note: by stupid I mean rich), nor do I really care.
Anyway, despite my PC performing amazingly in the face of people spending thousands for four videocards and five million terabytes of RAM and an infinity core superdrive CPU, my PC is *tear* showing its age. It is not the alpha male anymore, and it wont be long until some young stud comes along and knocks it off its podium. Plus I think my HDD might be fucked.
Primarily, I want to upgrade for the next round of games. Portal 2, Episode 3, The Witcher 2, Mass Effect 3, etc etc. Something that can help usher the next 4 - 5 years of gaming. I'm not entirely sure if I want to upgrade right now, but its on the cards, but I do have some important notes to make;
- I've been out of the hardware loop for awhile. I pay a little bit of attention, mostly to the interesting stuff that never makes it to the consumer market, but I dont know what the best choice for a GPU or CPU are.
- Whatever I buy will be running my games at 1920x1080. I might upgrade my screen in 3 or 4 years, but until then I'm very happy with this resolution and clarity.
- I dont intend to upgrade anything other than the GPU for ~4 years. Much like this one, I would probably change the GPU later if new, cooler shit was coming out just to keep my system up to speed, but the rest of the system would probably stay the same (with the exception of maybe more RAM, since RAM gets quite cheap). There's also the fact that...
- ...If I can save money on a CPU that can then be overclocked, then I would rather do that. My current PC was purchased with full intentions of overclocking in favour of saving money, and it proved to be a brilliant investment. 2.0 to 2.6, thank you 'ol compy.
- I live in Australia, so availability of hardware and prices will be different than for yanks. Also, since I'm not pressed to upgrade right at this very moment, I would happily wait until later into the year if it were known that there will be hardware price drops or a new line coming out that's worth waiting for.
This brings me to the end of my super awesome post. Would anybody like to give me some advice on what direction I should go in for getting myself a new system?
I'd check to see if the drive is 3 500GB platters or the eco version.xyla said:Ok, I searched for my components now and I think I´m pretty much set on this:
The 1GB 460GTX should still be in stock everywhere then, right?

Also look around for a better PSU / Case combo
Why a 945 over a 935? 935 should be a bit cheaper.
See if you can fit in a 870 board
1GB cards... might be in stock by that time. Vendors recieved 768MB as a hard launch on time, but a major of GF104 chips are being used in the 768MB cards with a slight shortage of the 1GB cards as of now. Hopefully they should be in stock as vendors get them in 1-2 weeks.
Note that the build is just minor nitpicks, nothing is terribly wrong with it.

Whoops, meant to type AMD x4 635. Must of slipped.xyla said:Thanks for your feedback. I tend to buy the cheaper 770 mainboard, because it seems like I don´t miss out on any big features (theres a USB 3.0 card already included) and I don´t tend to overclock my PCs, so I thought I could get by with the cheaper board. Any reasons I´m missing and should buy a 870 board?
A 935 seems to be hard to get around here. I searched the major sites but I didn´t find anything.
And I guess you would recommend a 500W PSU? You´re right, thats better suited. The case on the other hand seemed decent for the price, because I´m already scratching my limit. Which would you suggest?
