"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

You don't have a graphics card. Just an Intel integrated video chipset, stick to older games from 2005 and earlier.
Can you actully buy a separate graphic card for laptops like the desktops?
I would buy for it as the other components are quite good enough...

Hmm, maybe someone can help me out here. I'm trying to OC my CPU and I've read some tutorials online and they're not really matching up with what shows up in my bios. I'm thinking that's because foxconn wants me to use their own program that overclocks the cpu for you. Anyways, here's a few pics of what the bios looks like. I'm just unsure which values I need to change.

Anyone have any experience with the GTX295 and dual monitors? I'm having a bit of an issue, I just picked up another DVI->HDMI cable. So I have one monitor and one tv hooked up. Windows recognizes both displays however only one of the two DVI outputs appear to actually be sending a signal.

One more try on a new page..

Also I wanted to ask if we can expect the i7 970 and 980x to be the last of the new Socket 1366 processors. Are there more to come or have we reached the end of it's life?

Where would it go?
Laptops aren't very roomy.

Well the computer I picked up on Friday failed at installing windows, and now it can't detect the hard drive during installation. Methinks it's royally screwed.

*sigh* oh well, back to the shop it goes. Grrrr.

So where is the GAF StarCraft 2 pc build? I want it. The best I could do is scrounge up the ugliest case that would be perfect for pictures of your favorite Korean superstars.

Halp, I'm need of such a cheap computer for a gaaaame.

I'm looking for a mainly work-related laptop that will also run StarCraft II.

After some suggestions on another forum I'm looking most strongly at the MSI GX640.

The main thing that worries me is the processor. Doesn't SCII recommend a 2.6?
You'll do just fine.

The MSI $1k laptops I like, they are a bit cheap in some areas (keyboard, maybe a bit of construction), but good in what matters computing wise.

So...I think I've settled on a gaming (FF14 + civ 5)/emu/HTPC setup...thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

CPU: Core i5-661
Video: GeForce 250 GTS 512mb (SLi, got both for $120 from EVGA)
PSU: Either OCZ 500w
CPU HSF: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B if a small case gets too hot + 120mm fan...
You need a quad for FF14 so get an i5-750
FF14 needs to be in fullscreen to make use of SLi, just so you know. Emu should be fine windowed on just 1 GTS 250
Get a 212+ or equivalent cooler from microcenter or amazon.
Get an antec sonata case w/ 500W instead of the OCZ.

Only on high end laptops. In most cases the GPU itself can cost $2-500 and it isn't worth it to upgrade.

Just manually set CPU FSB and see if there was an advanced option you missed for CPU voltage control (not the compensation for Windows / Load).

Swap in all the budget parts.

So my laptop ( one im using now ) is falling apart. Ive had it for like 5 years now and i can barely play WoW at 800x600 all Low settings. yeah, its pretty bad. So after browsing through this thread for a while, I decided to put together a decent gaming pc for around 1000 dollars. I tried to keep the price below 1k, So i stole a couple of idea from you guys, and this is the best i came up with check it out:

What do you guys think.

I'm really close to buying a laptop, Acer TimelineX 3820TG with an i5 450M, Radeon HD 5650 (+ an Intel 4500HD), 4gb RAM and Win7 64-bit with a 13.3 inch screen.

I need a small laptop with good battery time and finally decided on this after first looking on an Asus 1215N and UL30VT.

How will Civ V run on this?
Without any problems?
Dragon Age?

I've decided after more thought to go ahead and give building my own computer a shot instead of buying pre-built. Something that concerns me as someone new to buying computer parts is that video cards are all off-branded in some way and look different too. How do I know which one to choose and why are there so many variations of a single video card model? As a note I'm currently looking at nvidia gtx 460's at the moment.

I used a GTX 295 for awhile with dual monitors (well, one monitor, and a 1080p HDTV) with no issues. Are you using the nVidia control panel, Ultramon, or the Windows display properties?

Couple things, the after market cooler likely comes with thermal grease.
And you should look into the i5 760, it doesn't cost much more, and is 2.8ghz not 2.66.

So my gtx 280 fried it self last night. This the 2nd time it happened in 2 months now. At this point I am tempted to just buy a new card instead of spending another 2 weeks and more shipping costs trying to get it RMAed again. Actually I don't even know if they will do another RMA.

So anyways short story. I am looking for a new video card in the price range of around $350 or lower.

A GTX 460 will be slightly faster (like a couple frames), but overclocks very nicely for a better boost (more like 20%), and is nice on the temps and power draw, while also only costing $230, well short of your $350 budget.

How confident are you with your power supply if you have fried 2 GPUs in a row? Might be something to look at to prevent a threepeat.

I was playing my PSP last night and in a fit of rage against MGS:PW, I ended up slamming my Logitech G5 v2 mouse down on the desk and snapped something inside of it that connected the mouse wheel to the rest of the mouse. It still worked but it was hard to move. The mouse button didnt work at all. After opening it up, it just kinda fell apart. I broke the damn thing :(

I really loved it and wanted another but I guess Logitech phased them out. Itll cost me 100 bucks to get a new one now. I didnt realize the mouse market worked like that lol

I see theres a rebate going on for the Logitech G500 now. 20 dollar MIR if you buy before Wednesday so I just ordered one. Has anyone used the G500 and the G5 v2 that can give me a comparison? If the new one is half as comfy as the G5 v2, Ill be thrilled.

I replaced the power supply after the first card died. The 2nd card was powered by the new PSU.

It was setup first with Windows 7 display, and it was confirmed in the nVidia control panel. Maybe my second DVI just doesn't work, although it would seem strange that it would still recognize the display device.

If you can somehow squeeze out some more, I really suggest getting rid of the Blue Caviar for the Black Caviar, or if you really can't afford the Black go for the Green. The Blue Caviar failure rates are through the roof. I have heard a lot of bad things about it. The rest is good.

Yeah I got carried away thinking about a 470. But getting a 460 is a much more reasonable decision, it also leaves room to get Starcraft 2 tomorrow. Primarily it is the reason why I want to get a good gaming card as soon as possible.

Edit:

I can probably go pick this one up in store. Unless you have a different manufacturer to recommend.

Buy the 1 GB version of the 460. Gigabyte has good reviews (runs cool, good OC), and so does MSI. EVGA has the better warranty (supposedly, no experience here) and charges a bit of a premium for their factory overclocked parts. Palit has a bad rep for binning chips and shipping their base models without heatsinks on the VRMs while early review samples sent to certain sites had the heatsinks. Palit's warranty for North America seems a little short too. I have the Palit 1GB that doesn't have the heatsinks and I'm perfectly happy with it. I have it OCed to 825MHz with my full load temp only at 67 degrees. The voltage can be unlocked on the Palit and I think reviews confirm the same for the MSI and Gigabyte cards.

guys I'm getting hardlocks because of bsods...

I've run memtest and it was green
I've run intelburntest and it was green
I've reinstalled my gpu drivers

What else could it be?

I'm thikning about reinstalling the motherboard driveres but do I have to uninstall the old one before I install the new one?

Or can I just reinstall it?

Sorry must have missed your earlier posts. Can you give some more details like any recent hardware changes? I would initially think you have a PSU problem.

oh by all means

the only recent hardware changes thats been made is that I installed some new ram that turned out to be defect, and then used the old ram.

The pc works now, I can play like crysis and dow on highest for a couple of hours and nothing happens.
But when the pc hardlocks it has aaaaaaaalways happened on fresh boots and just as I start a game or started a game or idling in windows

BSODs can also be due to aggresive overclocks. Try checking your GPUs to see if they're OCed. You're running two 250s right? Maybe just use one for the time being. Also make sure all power connectors are nice and tightly locked in. You were also having problems booting with the bad RAM before right? Did you set your BIOS to defaults? Howabout a hard disk test? Your specific harddisk manufacturer will have its own utility for you to use. Make sure SMART is turned on for the HDD in the BIOS as well. HDTune Pro and HD Tach are popular windows apps for diagnosing Harddisk performance.

Still sounds like your PSU is giving out. How many watts is your PSU. You have 2 250's in SLI?

-No, nothing is OC'ed

- I'll try that, running just 1 GTS

- I did set my BIOS to defaults

- Didnt know HDDs could cause BSODs, will check it out.

Thanks a bunch man

yes, sli
the psu is 650W

But again, if anything the PSU should give out when I'm pushing the PC rather than idling at the windows desktop? Or am I wrong?

Does it happen during gaming or just when it idles. Or even both.

When I'm idling or just as I start a game, I go into steam click Dawn of war 2 , the game loads up and just before I can do anything it hardlocks.

And for crysis it was kinda like that, other than that I could just start the game load a file and then it crashed

edit : But I have to emphasize that the BSODs aren't THAT common, it has happened 3 times during 2 days , maybe 8 or so hours of pc-time

Well when I startup my PC with my GTX 470 with drivers installed it locks up at the welcome screen or even the window startup screen. The second I put the 8800GT in it's fine. I'm getting a new PSU this week, so hopefully that will fix the problem. If not then it is most likely my graphics card.

So it could be that your PSU is failing. Just in case though check the capacitors on your motherboard to see if any are leaking, burnt out of broken; sometimes that may cause BSOD's or hardlocks. Also check your HDD, it might be failing, since those cause hardlocks/freezes as well. I've never heard of BSODs and Freezes happening though.

Thanks, will write this up at the things to check list.

But first things first, what are the odds of the BSODs being caused my incorrectly installed motherboard drivers?

Can you run Prime95 (or any nonGPU stressing benchmark) for a good time without hanging? Might help with isolating the problem.

I had something similar a few days ago with my new build and I noticed that my two 6 pin powerconnectors to my GPU were just loosened by my recent attempts at cable management. It would lock up as soon as the GPU needed the extra juice when starting a game. Just pushed them in till they clicked and it started working again. Hopefully it's just that.

I understand you bought used to save some money. Did your friend hint at any computer problems beforehand? I have friends that knowingly withhold problems about their old stuff that they try to sell to our less tech-savvy friends. I try to catch it and help when I can but it's hard coming from an enthusiast's standpoint when a person really just wants to save some dough. Buying a decent power supply to run your stuff in SLI will maybe cost you at least $50 over here in the US. Not sure what you can get in the 500w 80 plus certified range over there

Hmmm seems a 1GB version of a 460 is hard to find. For the sake of convenience I might just get a 470 instead.

But since I am open to opinions. These are the perspective cards I am looking at:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/prod...item_id=030348&sid=8nnif110f0ffjcm3qj97ovch11

vs

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6491184&CatId=3670

mainly because I prefer to go buy it at a brick and mortar shop instead of waiting a week for shipping. Otherwise id probably go with as per recommendation.

umm Canada right? Don't you guys have NCIX? and newegg.ca? They'll probably have them. Doesn't look like the 460s are running into supply problems right now, even with the great demand.

I ran intelburntest for the CPU stressing, and it didn't show any errors.

I'll open the box and check the connectors. Would really like to fix this without purchasing new parts, that is I really hope this isnt really hardware related.

But what do you think about the possibility of either my gpu or mobo drivers being the cause of this?

I did find the card on newegg. Its just that I am fine with spending more on a different card than waiting two weeks for it to get here. Unless the performance difference is extremely minor/negligible.

I'm a little confused. Is your PC just freezing, or are you actually getting a bsod? If you're getting a bsod it should tell you what kind of error you're getting. That might help with diagnosing your problem.

I had a freezing issue (there was no bsod) for a few months after building my new PC. It would happen at least once a day, randomly. When I came here for help, I pretty much had the same exact responses. I first thought it was my hdd. Replaced it. It didn't change a thing. My RAM always checked out fine, but I did an RMA with it. Still had freezing. Soon after this I decided to reinstall Windows. I figured I would see if it was due to a driver or some Windows update. While doing this, I also completely disabled anything on the motherboard I wasn't using. The main thing was some SATA ports (there were 3 different kinds on mine).

My intention was to slowly reinstall everything over a long period of time. That didn't really matter because somewhere along the way I fixed my freezing issue. Maybe there was a strange conflict with hardware I wasn't using. Maybe I did have bad RAM, and it caused something in my previous Windows install to become corrupt. I'm guessing it was one of those two.

oh this is a great post .

Lets see, where to start.

- My computer doesn't actually get a blue screen, it freezes but when I reboot it an error comes up something from windows where it says that the crash was because of a " Blue Screen "

It's interesting what you say bout that you finally fixed your problem with reinstalling things and getting new ram ( even though you said your RAM checked out fine, just like my current ones ). Maybe my new ram will fix it, but I'm really doubful.

Might reinstalling motherboard drivers help?

If you mean BIOS not really. If it's a mobo issue, it's a hardware issue.

I had some issues with BSOD a couple of days ago when I first built my PC. I looked up the error I was getting and found that a driver issue was causing it. I went on Gigabyte's website and got the latest drivers for my mobo. So yes, it's possible that drivers could cause a BSOD. Have you tried Googling the error code you're getting?

It's interesting what you say bout that you finally fixed your problem with reinstalling things and getting new ram ( even though you said your RAM checked out fine, just like my current ones ). Maybe my new ram will fix it, but I'm really doubful.

Might reinstalling motherboard drivers help?
I tried doing some investigating into the problem, but I can't really find anything. So far I've read it could be a heat, driver, hardware, or bios issue. Doesn't really narrow it down, does it? I was hoping the bsod would list a specific file, or a more specific error.

All I can say right now is just hang in there. It took me somewhere between 2 to 3 months before I had my issue fixed.

Can anyone help me with building a PC that costs around $600? it doesn't have to be top-end stuff, but to be able to run the newer games at decent framerate would be nice. I already have a 4870, so I need.. everything else :lol

Which games are you hoping to be able to play?
