"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Guys, is a 450W Corsair PSW handle a HIS 5830 iCooler + Phenom II x4 955?

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-5830-review/11

" Our test system is a power hungry Core i7 965 / X58 based and overclocked to 3.75 GHz. Next to that we have energy saving functions disabled for this motherboard and processor (to ensure consistent benchmark results).

I'd say on average we are using roughly 50 to 100 Watts more than a standard PC due to extravagant settings and the CPU overclock, water-cooling, additional cold cathode lights etc.

Keep that in mind. Our normal system power consumption is much higher than your average system.

System in IDLE = 176 Watts
System with GPU in FULL Stress = 325 Watts
The monitoring device is reporting a maximum system wattage peak at roughly 325~350 Watts, and for a PC with this high-end card, this is simply low and certainly remains within acceptable levels. Mind you though that our test does not stress the processor, you need to add another 90~125W for a modern quad core processor (non overclocked).

The IDLE wattage is very okay, the card is clocking down massively, resulting in an all time low power consumption (for our test PC). We'll show you that in a graph in a minute.

just had a really weird experience with my machine freaking out about the HDD, but only on the windows side

it was after I moved house, zo i assumed it was dying from being carried around and was about to buy a new one, until i noticed booting unbuntu in recovery mode there were some messages about SATA speed and having to drop to 1.5gb.. i just opened the case, rearranged the sata cable and plugged/unplugged it and it seems to be working perfectly again

so having to reinstall windows and wondering - what is the best antivirus?

and whats the one that will find and kill everything but takes forever to do a scan? malwarebytes or something?

I use Avira. It gets a popup, but I like it more than AVG or Avast. All are fine.

for scanning I use NOD32, super antispyware, bazooka (way way long ago). Windows does a decent job as well.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but you're only going to need an an aftermarket cooler for overclocking. Modern CPUs come with heatsink fan that's fine for stock speeds.

Ah, this is good to know. Thank you! :-)

I have another question as I'm looking to make sure I'm getting the right options. I currently have a full copy of the Windows XP software, and could upgrade to Windows 7. I saw that buying the full version of Windows 7 OEM System Builders version full was $10 cheaper than the upgrade, but it looked like there were limitations that I didn't quite understand. Anyone care to help me understand if getting the full OEM Win7 has any really bad drawbacks?

Also, I'm thinking of pulling back on the Graphics Card for now. I have a ATI Radeon HD 4550, 512 DDR3 memory. Would that run something like Starcraft 2?

I just finished my first build, and everything turns on and works, huzzah.

My question is about the fans. My motherboard has connections for SYS FAN1, SYS FAN 2, PWR FAN, and CPU Fan.

The only one I have connected is the CPU Fan. My case has a fan controller, so all of my other fans are connected to the controller. Is this right? All the fans turn on and I can control them with the controller.

Thanks

Ok, i dont know how to set the 1600 memory i bought to its speed, its at 1333 in the bios. MSI 890FX mobo. Latency and all that
That's not "its speed". That's just a speed it supports. 1333 will be the default bus speed, but your memory can handle going as high as 1600 if you're overclocking your CPU. If you don't plan on overclocking your CPU, you can leave it at 1333 with no ill effects.

Any thoughts? I just don't want to pull the trigger on anything until I'm 100% sure.

You can only use the OEM version on one "system" (which I believe technically means motherboard upgrade). With the non OEM version you can transfer it to another system if you want to.

Ah, good to know. Probably better stick to the upgrade then, just in case.

I thought memory divider would be good enough?...

edit- tried to mess a bit in bios, i set the FBUS-DRAM ratio to 1:4 and it bumped it to 1600. 200 x 4 = 800, x2 for DDR = 1600

Seems good?

No. There is literally no reason to unless you're overclocking your CPU. Go read up on that first before touching that shit.

Doesnt make sense, my memory is supposed to run at 1.35V, 7-8-7-24, the bios sets it to 1.5V by default with 9 CAS, THAT does not seem like something that i should not adjust.

Sure, change those. I see upthread that you've got a 1090T, so you might as well change the memory speed divider too since you have an unlocked multiplier, so you don't need to alter the memory bus speed to overclock. If you've got a custom cooler, you might as well go for the easy overclock since that's what you're paying the extra for with the 1090T. There's a good guide on it here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/258573-29-black-edition-overclock-guide

Congrats on the new builds, guys.

Ermac, you can hook them all up to the motherboard, fan controller, or keep them split like your current setup. Whichever you choose, you're good to go. Of course, by opting to connect the rest of the fans to the case controller, you lose out on whatever automatic fan speed profile options you may have by going with the motherboard headers.

C'mon bloody case!!! I've had my parts since Saturday, so frustrating not having a case to put em in >: It's going to arrive today, cmon cmon cmon.

Trust me, it beats not having a motherboard. I went to pick my parts up last Friday, drove 2 hours to get em and the courier decided not to deliver that day. So I had to take what was there, drive home again and order the motherboard online to be delivered. The courier still hasn't delivered it to the store. Yay for me! :D

Hey Build-Your-Own GAF. My graphics card has been giving me a bit of trouble ever since Starcraft II almost fried it. Thinking it might not be a bad time to move up, though I'm happy to wait if that's recommended. Any thoughts?

Here is my rig:
core i7 950 (O/C)
gtx 295 (O/C)
evga x58

I would like to be able to overclock the GPU if possible.

All of my parts are arriving in the mail today...
...except my motherboard, which is scheduled to arrive thursday :(

I'm loving that white case too. Normally i'm very much against case lights but the blue on white doesn't look bad at all. The only other way I would go is a white light on a black case but normally i wouldn't put lights in there at all.

Res, games, what setting do you expect, budget, etc.

Although waiting on the 6xxx series is your best bet.

Wow. Finished building my gaming rig today... damn! Crysis looks nice on high :)

Gonna play me some Torchlight soon and then I'm gonna install more programs.

I'M BACK! Haven't been gaming on a PC since 2004 (except for indie stuff that worked on my shitty laptop).

Is xpadder worth the 10 bucks? I mean is it the best program for gamepad play?

I'd check out Pinnacle Game Profiler too, before buying anything, and seeing what you prefer (there's a free fully functioning trial to try as well). Pinnacle's software is capable of doing some really advanced switching/toggling (just read the new features) to compensate for some of the more complex keyboard > gamepad transitions, not sure if xpadder matches it.

Haha! All my stuff arrived, I'm banging on my new set currently. Having the weirdest issues today though.

First, the GA870A-UD3 mobo is less wide than normal ATX. It took 3 less screws, which I didn't really like (I had to leave one hole unscrewed :/). If you're gonna do a certain form factor make use of the space FFS, in the end it worked out allright, but Gigabyte's placement of connectors is fucking shit. All system fan connectors on the bottom right? Audio on top left, wtf??

Then Win7 couldn't find my DVD/rw driver, even though it booted up from it.. and allowed me to read cds and dvds when it asked me to install the driver... yeah, what?

Some other weird issues with installs, but I'm working on it now, all's fine and dandy :D

@TheEastonator&Megadrive I know how you feel guys, it sucks! Just make sure you get your stuff asap, you'll be all the more happy when you do get it :P

NVIDIA reveals Fermi's successor: Kepler at 28nm in 2011, Maxwell in 2013

9-21-10-gputech11004.jpg

Not a lot of details to be had, but NVIDIA wants you to know Fermi isn't the company's be-all, end-all GPU -- "hundreds of engineers" are already hard at work on Codename Kepler, expected to go to production this year and ship in 2011. Kepler's based on a 28nm process, we're told, and will thankfully deliver an estimated 3 to 4 times the performance per watt compared to Fermi, and hopefully run cool. If you built your last PC to last, however, you might wait for Maxwell in 2013, supposedly bringing a sixteen-fold increase in parallel graphics-based computing just two years after that, including advanced features like the ability to autonomously process some content independent of a CPU.

Update: Does this roadmap mean we should expect new GPUs from NVIDIA every two years? Jen-Hsun Huang wouldn't commit to that, but said that there will be "mid-life kicker" product launches in-between each new NVIDIA chip to keep the wheels turning.

thanks, i think i was using avira before because the umbrella looks familiar. i already installed avast and the UI seems a bit too flashy but so long as it works.. maybe i should go back to avira though :S

5770 will be here tomorrow! Can't wait, should be a nice boost over my 8800gt. May end up crossfiring them (meaning two 5770 obviously), gunna make sure one works first though. New monitor incoming on Thursday as well!

Blizzard makes their games scale very well and I doubt you will have any trouble running it at that resolution on those settings with your hardware.

That said DIII will be out in over a year so you'll have plenty of time to think about upgrading :lol

I know it's a long way off, but I end up feeling really guilty when I waste a lot of money on computer games haha. How important is the jump to quad core at this point? Is it not necessary if I'm content playing at 1280x800, medium or even low settings? Also, does anyone know what a step down from the GTX 460 is? That card is too much power for my uses so I'd like to shave some money off and get a weaker card. From the screenshots thread Alice 2 doesn't seem to be too demanding (textures look low quality), and I think that's the most demanding game I want to play.

Hello everyone, it's time for yet another edition of "Zel asks a stupid fucking question"!!

*applause track plays*

So I'm taking a look at the motherboard specs I'm buying to see if it comes with SATA cables in the box since I don't currently own them, and I come across this little message:

"*Due to OS limitation, when installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, Windows® 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Hence, a total installed memory of less than 3GB is recommended."

Now, since I'm buying a board that can support 4 x 4 GB DDR3 RAM, I figure it makes more sense to purchase one 4 GB stick instead of two 2 GB sticks so that I don't have to replace them should the day come where I want to max out the RAM. I was planning to install Windows XP which I already own the full version of, and then install a Windows 7 upgrade. However, the above makes it sound like if I tried to do so, it wouldn't recognize the RAM at all, and simply wouldn't work.

Is that what it means? Or am I misreading that?

Thanks for the answers.

Anybody know what could be wrong if my PC keeps stuttering and takes forever to do simple things like deleting items or opening up a media file?
