"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Is there going to be a big difference between the Sandbridge and current I Processors?
Large enough. For mobile it seems (just that the fact Intel is offering low power desktop chips "S") that SandyBridge will offer a lot more on mobile as an upgrade.

I dont think the MSRP's have been released yet, we only have a few leaks like the one a page or two back:

I wouldnt expect the $500+ prices until the performance line launches later in 2011 that uses the socket 2011.
The two to look at are the 2500K and 2600K. $220 / $310.
Basic mobos are looking $130-$140 for GB/ASUS.

I'm looking to upgrade my Nvidia 8800GTX.

I was wondering if the ATI 5550 or GTS 450 cards would be much of an upgrade over my 8800GTX. I'm not looking to spend more than $125 or so.
No, get a GTX 460 at the very least.

Try it with everything unplugged and see if it still does it. If it doesn't slowly add a piece back one at a time. You're sure you have all the jackscrews in the case so the motherboard is raised slightly and not shorting on the case?
Im assuming you mean try turning on the PW with everything unplugged on the MB? And yes all of the jackscrews are there. funny thing though is on the old case, there were none, and the mobo was directly screwed on

I'm thinking about buying a new keyboard. The keyboard I have now is perfect for typing but I don't think it's ideal for gaming. I'm trying not to go above $75. Any suggestions for an all around good gaming keyboard?

I will sell you a new X4 Sidewinder keyboard for $38 shipped no tax via UPS.

OKayy I need some major help :( I just finished replacing a broken case for my brother's dell computer, but now I think the power supply is trashed but theres no reason it should be

- once i press the IO switch in the back, the MB green light turns on and the keyboard's led lights flicker for half a sec, but nothing else moves

- I simply took everything apart and put them into a new cooler master case, without adding or subtracting any components (memory, cpu, etc stayed in place

- the 24pin connector and the 12v connector are there firmly, and the computer turned on fine before i made the changes

So what could be the reason the computer wont power on
Quoting myself:

I've changed out the power supply and used mine for a build not too long ago and now the problem persists, which i think is weird. Good news that its not the power supply but bad news that it can be the motherboard.

My question is, when i disconnect everything internally and power on the PSU, shouldnt it still work, like the fans spin and such?

EDIT: Also should note that the SB-power LED is ON, but nothing else is working. could this be a problem with the case, or maybe my MoBo is short-circuiting

I still need advice on what to do in terms of games... Should I use RadeonPro for everything (3xbuffering, MLAA, VSync, etc)? Or should I be letting CCC 10.12 apply the stuff to everything? Or should I be using D3D? I didn't remember this stuff being so complicated just a few years ago :(
Any advice on this? I know this thread is more hardware, but I didn't get an answer elsewhere either.

Howdy, PC-GAF. I'm diving into a new PC (probably in the middle of January).

My current PC:

My ultimate goal is to be able to emulate Wii games at 60fps. I'm not even sure if that's possible right now, so I might wait longer than January if that's the case. Anyway, I haven't been keeping up with PC hardware for a long while, so who can point me in the right direction? Ideally, I don't want to spend more than $1500, but $1000 would be great.

^ if emulation is your goal, you're going to need to overclock.

Why not bring that CPU of yours closer to 4GHz?
I have a stock HSF. Plus, I'm not looking to upgrade this computer.... I'm looking to upgrade FROM this computer, meaning I'd like to get an entirely new machine.

I'm just trying to get a good suggestion for what direction to go, and I figured I'd give people a good idea of where I was coming from.

Like, what's better these days? The i7, or the Phenom II?

If a major goal for you is to run Dolphin at high speeds you'll want to wait for Sandy Bridge which launches in 2 weeks.

Other than that, there's no real point in upgrading that system you have. The cost benefit for anything besides running Dolphin better isn't worth it.

*I'll be putting together a rig at that time as well so you can copy mine :p

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but...

Lately when recording Fraps movies, I get terrible stuttering down to about 5fps. It records fine at first, but always after a couple of minutes it slows down to a slide show.

Then I tried recording straight to an external HDD and it recorded with the usual 50-60fps without any problems. Does this mean there's a problem with my main HDD? Is it about to die? :(

the smart money will wait until Q1 2011 for an 8 core (16 thread) LGA 2011 SB

Alright. I'll wait it out, then. Thanks guys.

Aren't 2011 boards second half of 2011?

Closest he can get in Jan is the 2600K which is 4 cores/8 threads

Cipherr said:
You expect lower IPC or just overall lower clock speeds on the 8 cores?

I'm not really considering that, but I'm just saying there will be no benefit to waiting for 8 cores, since only 2 of the cores are getting used anyways. But yeah, I would guess that the 4 cores will be better overclockers than the 8 cores due to lower power requirements...though I could be wrong on that.

A good HSF should carry over to your new build, so no harm in getting one now, and moving it over to your new PC when the time comes. Why get the EE version of a CPU and not overclock? Kind of strange...

Have any suggestions?

Pretty sure all 1156 coolers fit the 1155 socket, so theres already a great lot of coolers to choose from right off the bat.

Good times. Hell even the infamous 212+ had a 1155 setting.

I just got a Dell XPS 8100, its specs are:

i7 870
8 GB of RAM
ATI 5770

Should this be enough to run basically any game? Emulators also? (ex. PSCX2)

I have a similar setup. The 5770 can run most games out now maxed(I have one), but it will probably chug during emulation. (haven't tired, but this is what I heard)

So I sprung for the GTX 580 EVGA Black Ops edition (SC). Now I have to order the rest of the parts. Waiting until Sandy Bridge.

So lately Windows has been saying there is an error with my HDD, I checked it out with HDTune and it is flagging End-to-End Error Detection as being the issue. Anyone have any idea what that means?

Hi all,

I am looking to build my next PC. Its been a while so I am out of the loop in terms of the best CPU / GPUs so I was hoping you all can help me out.

I am willing to spend 3500 total on the box and monitor. I do not need an OS or speakers or keyboards, etc.

Goal with this machine? well run any game I throw at it with no less than 60FPS in 1080p. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Backup everything
Already done that, it's been giving me errors for a few months but has been completely fine. Not really sure what to do with it now.

I'm still having trouble with my pc. I just replaced the PSU and I'm still getting the abnormal hardware monitor warning on post and when I go into the bios all the voltages are much higher than they should be. Does this mean my motherboard is dead then or does anyone know what's going on?

Is this a good deal??? I use video editing software and 3D modeling software as a hobby, so I thought I'd go with 8 GB of RAM instead of 4 GB since it was only $50 more. What kind of jump in performance can I expect (minimal, or vastly improved?)

I would bounce down to 4gbs of ram and get a better gpu.

My Macbook's screen went out and there's a lot of shit I want that's on there and I don't have an operating external to back stuff up on now. In the mean time, is there a way I can just hook it up to my PC so it registers as some kind of external hard drive essentially? I just want to pull some media from it and I'd rather do it via a single cord rather than hook up a monitor to my laptop and transfer to an external, then transfer to my PC... this might be a stupid question, but I don't have any kind of network set up and I've never had any reason to see if this can be done :P

Not sure what the performance differences are, but the 760 is only like 10 bucks more than the 750.

He's doing video editing and modeling... he wants the RAM.

You could get a GTX460 or N460GTX card for less than the cost of that 5770.

Wait a few weeks for Sandy bridge to be released. With that kind of money, you'll no doubt be going with a high end SLI setup.

With that kind of money to spend you'll want to wait a little bit for Intel's sandy bridge processors to come out. I'd suggest a nice 32 inch 1080p tv as your monitor.

Good point, I opted to shell out $30 more for a 256-bit GPU.

Also good point, Newegg had the 760 at $5 more. Checked benchmarks anyway and it's more than a $5 jump in performance :D

I checked GTX460s on Newegg but couldn't find a cheap one, link?

Wait 2 weeks for Sandy Bridge. It'll cost $40 more for CPU+mobo, but you'll get a 3.3Ghz quad instead.
