TigerDirect also gave me an almost identical quote. So where can I save money in this (if at all)? Main use is for gaming .... likely stuff like Eve Online, Starcraft, that sort of thing. FPS's I might dabble in but will likely stick to FPS gaming on 360/PS3

The $209 mother board jumps out at me as being overkill, I am pretty sure there are lots of cheaper options. You could also downgrade the GTX 570 to a 560 Ti or even AMD 6870 or GTX 560. Keep in mind that the components people on here recomend are very good ones if you are just after something that works - ie you are not a tweaker, modder or in the least bit interested with overclocking. Getting premium grade stuff is most likely overkill. If you are playing all he big stuff on the consoles you could do a lot of downgrading.

Hi guys, i know this might be a pretty stupid question, but if some of you have an XFX card i need your help.

i tried registering my HD 6950 videocard on the XFX site but it says my personal activation code has been entered incorrectly, i tried entering it in many ways, (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx lower case and upper case) also (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx upper and lower case) and neither of these worked.

so, um, help? I cant update my drivers otherwise... (My driver is 8.850.0.0)

I think your question was already answered, you should get the drivers directly from ATI.

Second, I had this exact same problem with XFX. It took my serial number and the card was listed but didn't accept my activation code. I would strongly suggest opening a ticket with their support and make sure you card is registered. If you register after 14 days, they will not honour the double life time warranty (i.e., warranty transfer on resale).

1.30V or a bit over. Looks like what you have.

Crashed in Prime95 at 1.310 V at about the 2 hour mark. Upped it to 1.315 V and starting over. Seems my temps are fine, still staying under 65 C as a high across all cores. This is going to be a long and wonderful process I believe!

Since I don't always play games on my PC, which is when I'm looking to overclock the most (specifically, SC2), is there any easy way to switch between BIOS profiles? Seems the best method is just to default to my non-OC profile and then boot to BIOS and switch to my OCed profile when needed.

Is the i3 a decent gaming cpu for a budget build? My aim is to skimp a little on the processor in favor of a beefed up graphics card.

for a budget build it is definitely a good performing gaming cpu, but what do you mean with beefed up graphics card exactly? I wouldn't pair it with anything more expensive than a 560 TI, everything over that will probably not be fully utilized and you're better off saving the extra money for a later upgrade

It's neck to neck with a Phenom II 955 (quad) even with quad-core apps so yes it's fine.

How come when I'm OC'ing my 2500k it shows that I am under my computer but CPU-Z does not. I put it under full load using prime95 and it still only shows stock 3.3 MHZ in CPU-Z? I know it idles at like 1600.

Put in my order, feels good man.

thanks to those that helped answer my questions, this thread is really helpful at not only recommending parts, but explaining things out to someone like me who's just starting out.

560Ti for $190 AR. Sure, go for it.

So while I wait for my parts, I was figuring I'd use my old case from a case i got from a prebuilding site back in 2007, but do most just get a new case with new components? Are cases much more advanced since then?

Onboard sound is good enough for the vast majority of users these days. Unless you know you need a sound card, don't bother getting one. If you determine down the road you need one, you can always get it then.

You'll be perfectly fine with onboard audio imo

Does a full scan on MSE take awhile even if I've only used less than 100gb of disc space?

Is an LED bad for gaming? Also is 5ms response time really noticeable compared to 2? It seems most monitors are 5ms response time.

Ok guys, this is my brothers build that he wants to order within the next hour. Any suggestions whatsoever or comments would be great. Any incompatible parts or anything that isn't right for whatever reason I'd love to hear it. We're both not very computer savvy.

"Old wisdom" said that anything below 8ms was fine. Not sure if people still go by that today though.

LED is debatable as a whole though. Your viewing angles and picture uniformity will suffer for sure, especially if it's a TN panel that already has poor viewing angles. Colors/contrast should be a bit better though.

Edit: No HDD? If he's spending that much he should probably upgrade that too unless he already has a good one. HDDs are always a bottleneck so the faster you can get, the better. Optical drive can be transferred from an old build though as long as it's SATA, I assume that's why it's not in there.

No.

Once you start getting nice headphones or want to set your computer up to a nice receiver with nice speakers however...

Shit we did the optical drive and hard drive on a different site and forgot to transfer over, added to that is a Western Digital Black 1TB and just a standard Samsung 24x DVD writer I think.

WD Blacks are good drives, any reason you are picking that over a Samsung F3 1TB though? Not sure about the prices over there, but those are generally cheaper on this side of the pond, and perform great (well, for a mechanical drive).

Would you suggest an F3 over a WD Black?

you can safely drop down to a HX650 (have that one with a 2600K / GTX480, more than enough)
if you really want to keep open the option for SLI'd 580s you'd have to get an AX850 (and maybe the PRO version of the motherboard)
Arctic Silver 5 is OK but Arctic Cooling MX-2/4 would be better

coolermaster mouse? I love their cases but not sure on that one :p

and I've got good experiences with Samsung HDDs myself

Looks good. Make sure he knows the HAF X is fucking huge, and the P8P97 non-Pro cannot do SLI. To each his own, I like a freak thats grown, so he may be fine with all that.

As fast or faster than WD Blacks (WD is terrible with their models, it's totally luck of the draw) and cheaper. Over here at least, if the WD drive is cheaper then just go with that.

Thanks for the advice guys. We changed the WD to a Samsung F3, we changed the motherboard to a P67 Pro just in case he does decide to SLI in a couple of years (he knows he'll have to maybe upgrade the PSU then too) and he stuck with the Coolermaster mouse, he said he just wanted an average cheapish mouse for now and he'll get a proper gaming mouse in the future. He doesn't like the designs on the Razer mice.

Product ordered. Oh and he was happy about the case being large, our last gaming PC died because it got so congested and the air flow was wank. He plans to get this one much more ventilated including proper cable management.

Hey guys, do any of you know anyone with a 6950 flashed to a 6970?

I've been wondering how those flashes fared over a several months with that flash. I didn't flash mine because of a few reports of dead cards, so I just unlocked the shaders.

anyone with any insight or experience on the subject?

I didn't use the 6970 flash that modified the shaders, clocks and voltage. I just did the clocks (and I'm sure I unlocked the shaders but it isn't getting reported for whatever reason). Things work fine on my end.

But yeah, if anything the dead cards are just people who screwed up by accident or ran the voltage too high

oic. I'm still very happy with just my unlocked shaders and OC, though I would have been open to the flash again if the risk was low. Though really, the only game I have that is making my 6950 sweat is Crysis 2...so I'm hardly pressed either way.

NCIX. ... They price matched everything from newegg, their assembly fee was a reasonable 50 bucks. The motherboard I took on their advice to bring the cost down. A supreme instead of elite.

It seems like every other day, my build budget is increasing. As of this moment, it's exactly $2000. Now, the build includes all the usual parts, plus a monitor, sound card, headset, ssd, 5.1 speakers, and a wireless network adapter.

The build I have right now, is a little over $1900 and I feel really uncomfortable with what I picked out and thought I could get the thread's input/approval.

hi guys i've decided that i would like to purchase a new graphics card so that i can play starcraft II until i buy a new PC in 2 years. the computer i have is only 1.5 years old but it is not a gaming computer and the graphics card is integrated so it is pretty much incapable of playing modern games. i would like the card i purchase to be 100$ or less but most importantly be able to run starcraft II at medium settings and to ensure that when there are a lot of units on the screen that it will not lag/drop below 30fps. based on factors like price and power consumption (since my PSU is only 300W) i've kinda narrowed it down to the following.

Raedon HD 4670

Raedon HD 5570

Raedon HD 5670

Raedon HD 6670

some other things that you guys may need to know to help me:
ram: 8gb
processor: dual core @ 2.50 GHz

ideally i'd rather spend less but if i do need to spend 100 to ensure that it will last me and most importantly not dip below 25 or 30 fps when there is a great deal going on screen then i will gladly do it. thanks guys.

You might still find it lags when their is a huge battle during a 4v4 or something because of your cpu.

Found a couple of benchmarks with the 6670 and sc2:

Nice, good to hear that NCIX did all that for you. I dropped by CC earlier today and they were pretty reluctant on pricematching anything and they stand by their "Toronto only" rule.

bro, unlocking shaders is the same thing as you are still flashing the bios.
I did the same with mine, OC beyond 6970 speed and still works perfectly fine with TW2 at max settings.
