"I need a New PC!" 2011 Thread of reading the OP. Seriously. [Part 2]

So, I have still been looking in to OEM Windows 7 stuff and seeing if it is possible to move it to a new computer with a new motherboard. It looks like the answer would normally be no, but I find that interesting since you would still technically be using it on one computer if it was deleted on your other machine. Has anyone ever tried moving the OEM OS to a new machine? I feel like it is kind of a waste to have to buy a new OEM Windows 7 Home Premium for $100 if I already have a key for it and plan to use it on one computer. Anyone have any opinions on this?

I would assume what's happening is that gravity is counteracting the design of the heatpipes and is keeping the liquid inside the pipe lower to the ground. It's unable to fight gravity and spread away from the contact plate.

I think you're right. Normally, the coolant inside the pipes is supposed to collect at the heatsink, vaporize and expand as it absorbs heat, travel towards the opposite end of the card, and then condense and return to the source once it releases it heat to the cooling fins. In a vertical orientation, I suspect much of the liquid is pooling at the bottom of the card where it's not doing much good.

Below are two images for the 580 reference cooler. They use a vapor chamber instead of heat pipes, which is supposed to be more efficient. The second picture is an actual cooler, flipped upside-down to show the copper heatsink. The liquid collects at the bottom (the copper) and then vaporizes and releases its heat against the aluminum fins.

The fan is at one end of the card, blowing through the fins and out the other side. It appears that even this style of cooler could have issues being hung vertically, although I suspect it's as not as severe as the non-reference versions.

Assuming gravity has a non-negligible impact here, aren't a lot of test set-ups inherently flawed then? I might be wrong about this, since I don't follow hardware tests until I'm looking to spend some money, but most times when you see them pictured, it's a practically bare system, with the motherboard lying flat on its bottom, with CPU and GPU heat sinks in a vertical iposition.

I've used a reference evga gtx 580 in both an FT02 and an RV02 with zero heat issues. I don't think the issue applies to reference cards.

Thanks. That Crucial one looks very nice.

What about a modular PSU? I need something in the 500-600 watts range. I'm not doing any PC gaming or anything.
M4 is second in reliably after Intel too.

Modular PSUs in that range:
Cheapo: OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W
Solid: Antec BP550 Plus 550W / Corsair TX550M
Best: Seasonic SS-560KM

Damn I'm getting the red cpu light and nothing happens when I reset with the mem ok button. Should I still try removing the battery to reset to the bios or is my cpu dead?

1) Read manual

There should be a jumper or even a button to reset the BIOS without taking the battery out. That should be in your manual.

Remove 1 stick of memory, try booting 3 times. Hard power offs. Unplug power cable.
Try with 2 sticks. Same deal.
Try other stick in same slot, then different slot.

Ok so my dad is ready to pull the trigger on the PC for his business this week. Here's what I got built for him. Damn shame hard drive prices are so damn expensive right now. Any bone headed mistakes I've made? Anything incompatible? Gonna go ahead with integrated video. Mother board should fit fine in that case right? Thanks!

Documents, Quickbooks, remote desktop and like, transferring data across a network. Email, maybe some presentations. General use. It might seem a little powerful but I want to make sure he doesn't have to upgrade or anything for a pretty long time.

2x2GB memory like in the OP. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233187
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 for HDD.

How about something like BitFenix Shinobi or Source 210 cases? I think they look less 'gamery'.

Hey all total noob here.

I recently decided to attempt to fix/rebuild my pc.

I was running
asus m2r32-mvp
ati radeon hd 4850
650 watt power supply
2X2gb RAM

Not exactly sure what the cpu is because I had someone build this pc for me 4-5 years ago.

Anyway long story short a friend told me at this point i'm better off scraping and starting fresh so i'm here looking for some direction.

The same friend offered me this:

ASUS EAH4670/DI/1GD3/V2
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX
Motherboard DP35DP Intel

Not sure if it's worth it to take it and start from there or just go at it from scratch.

I'm looking to put together a good gaming pc, one that will last for a bit with moderate updates.

I hope this info can help some of you point me in the right direction, and please go easy on me.

As for price i'm trying to keep an open mind and am looking to spend around $500

Ok, went ahead with the changes you recommended. Thanks. I didn't even realize I had the 1 4gb stick rather than the 2x2gb. Doh!

Taking that Souce 210 Elite case. It's nice and I'm sure my Dad will appreciate the plain, business look. Also, HDD saves a lot of money for the amount of space. Aside from that, all good I think.

Thank you sir!

Was going to say they have a same socket dual core pentinum.

True, but I'd say to go in the opposite direction since the PC is almost all CPU.
G850 works for lowering the cost, but I'd even say get an Intel i3 2105 with HD 3000 graphics.
Argument can be had for getting a G850 and a $40 graphics card too though...

Yeah I been building really low end PCs here for office people. Been doing the Pent with cheap GPU.

Also I notice they don't have i7 locally.....I checked last night. Nor GTX 60 ti but they do have 570.

If I were on a stricter budget I would definitely go with a G850 or similar.
But dropping 1k on an i3 system is different. An i5 2400 is not needed but wants to be in there so bad, I can tell.

Read through the manual a lot, but am still stuck. Did the "clear RTC ram" jumper, and the red cpu light has gone away, but the Dram led is still lit. Trying the ram in different slots and using the mem ok button, which I believe resets everything isn't working...light flashes while it trys the tests, but goes back to being continuously lit.

Memory can be pretty picky. Just keep trying different sticks in different slots and jamming the MEM_OK button or whatever you have. Sucks I know.
I think the MEM_OK button presses once, then you let the computer restart different RAM settings like 6 times? Hopefully it is explained in your manual.

I got stuck there on my build, hit MEM_OK, let it restart 5 times, then removed the 2nd stick. Booted right up. Maybe try it with 2 and remove 1. Mobo should say which slot is primary.

First off your 4850 is much better than the 4670 he is giving you.

I'm assuming you are running an old Athlon x2 or Phenom gen 1 right now. The motherboard your friend is giving you is also obsolete.

Out of what you got, I would keep the power supply for sure as 650w is plenty, and the gpu for now. If your case is decent, then keep that too.

Check the OP as a guideline on what new parts to get.

Doesn't really sound like he needs 500GB storage. With the current hard drive prices you can get a 120GB SSD instead and actually save money.

Hazaro

well he's not expecting anything decent, and it's not like he's gonna be playing demanding games. maybe tf2 or some shit. as i said just value for money.
I mean you get a $20 or $0 GPU at those prices. That PC is an incredible value for a prebuilt. Just get a monitor on top of it if possible. PCs just don't offer something balanced like that often at a low price. Just don't see it.

PC-GAF, I need help. My PC doesn't boot anymore, this is the first problem ever that I got since July when I built it. It tries to boot but then just shuts down again. Did I fucked up my i5 2500k? I OC'd a few days ago to 4.2 Ghz from stock, ran Prime95 and didn't get any erros so.. I don't know.

I already tried switching power cables, removing the CMOS Battery, even cleaning it up lol.

Here's a video:

Some sort of hardware failure. First guess is RAM, but it could be nearly anything. I have a similar issue myself, where my PC will start rebooting in that fashion every several days or so, and I think it may be the PSU in my case.

I was planning on keeping the case and power supply. Wasn't 100% on what he was offering to give me. I'll be back once i get ore of a solid idea of where i want to head after checking the OP.

Thanks again

Got my Coolermaster 212 Plus installed today, but have a question. How do I want the fans push/pull aligned within my case? Do I want both fans pulling air away from the heatsink in opposite directions, or some other alignment with one going in each way? Hopefully this makes sense, as I'm trying to make sure I get this right.

The two fans in push/pull configuration (both towards same direction), aimed towards an exhaust fan (generally the rear).

It was mentioned and you probably know that, but the G5 case isn't ATX compatible. Just a little heads-up.

Oh yeah, thanks! Forgot you can't do atx unless you do a few mods, which I wouldn't mind doing.

In re: to the whole GPU aftermarket cooling in the FT02, etc. if I can get a hold of a Thermalright Shaman, I'll see how well it works.

So I had to disassemble my rig to get my new CPU cooler on, and everything is back up and running, except the hard drive I use to store media isn't showing up. When I go into device manager, there are 2 disk drives listed (and I only have 2 HDs hooked up), but in the My Computer area, there simply isn't another drive any longer. Any ideas for what might have happened?

Well let's see if google can explain how to do this then. lol Everything I've found involves formatting the drive, which I do not want to do.

Right click the partition, select "Change drive letter and paths" and assign it a drive letter and it should be accessible.

It's unallocated so there is no partition. When I right click, new simple volume, new spanned volume, etc show up.
Oh no.

Lots of important data on there? If so, go to your nearest computer store and have them transfer all of it. They're nerds, so they won't judge you for the porn.

Nothing I can't replace. Just a shit ton of music and tv shows and such. All easy enough to replace, just will take FOREVER. Just hoped for an easy fix to keep all my stuffs.
