Anyone else giving the gift of PC Gaming this year?

0ZJgawal.jpg

We are having the gaming group xmas party tomorrow(before some members spend holiday with their families out of town) and I have to keep these guys in the ways of the pc master race. Except for 2, they have what they need so they get Scotch and the 3DS.

Although alcohol can be a critical part of PC gaming depending on how grueling the League of Legends/BF4 nights get. Also Im pretty sure AC4 is a big rum commercial. I am on to you Ubi.

MfB7VGZl.jpg

Bag 1 is ATHM50S + Logitech G700S + Xonar DXG; Antlion mic was backordered so we hooking him up with a Zalman clip in the interim

Bag 2 is the Nintendo stuffs(3DSXL + Poke Y)

Bag 3 I cant say because we have a GAF lurker

Hello guys I have a pretty annoying problem with my current setup, I think I mentioned it some moons ago but got no reaction. Basically, my OS (windows 8) regularly freezes for some seconds. And by regularly I mean... let's say when it happen, you can count your blessings if it do not re-happen every 10-15 minutes until you reboot and everything is right again.
So the freezes usually comes with a message saying "kernel display driver stopped responding" or something. I suspected the video card but strangely, this only happen when browsing the net or using the OS, never in-game.

Why the repost ? Well I have a new symptom ! Hurray ! Errhh...
When I stop the PC it regularly (not everytime) goes black and... restarts ! (I'm not sure if this happen every time I have short freezes).

So if this info helps determining an evident culprit, hey, doesn't hurt to ask. I'm pretty tired of the freezes and the reboot in place of shut down is the icing on the nerve cake.

Thinking about building a nice htpc, a NAS, an upgrade (in this order or so), but if the main PC could behaves it would be a nice start.

My current unstable build -
Intel Core i5 2500K
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
Asus P8P67 LE Rev 3.0
2x 4go DIMM DDR3 G.Skill PC12800 9-9-9-24
Antec HCG 520 Watts 80+ Bronze

Hey guys, I've been asked to pick out a pc for my sister as a christmas gift from my parents. The budget is about $800. They have kids and I know they play games like minecraft and whatever kids browser games but nothing too graphically intensive. I still want to get them something decently powerful as they won't be upgrading it in the next 5-10 years (their old computer is about 10 years old).

Here's what I've come up with so far.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($184.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H81.Amp-UP ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($72.55 @ Newegg)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card ($165.67 @ Newegg)
Wireless Network Adapter: Rosewill RNX-N250PCe 802.11b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($20.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Antec 450W ATX Power Supply ($37.98 @ Amazon)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer ($16.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 - OEM (64-bit) ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Monitor: Asus VS247H-P 23.6" Monitor ($89.99)
Keyboard: Logitech K120 Wired Standard Keyboard ($10.77 @ Amazon)
Mouse: Logitech SBF-96 Wired Optical Mouse ($7.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $832.89
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-12-13 00:35 EST-0500)

The big thing I'm not sure of is the motherboard. I know they won't be overclocking or using dual video cards but I'm wary of the quality of the cheap motherboards. Any other suggestions would be appreciated too.

The Asus B85M-G is a really nice quality mATX board.

On the GPU front the R9 270 is around $180 as an alternative. A wee bit faster, can make full use of its 2GB VRAM and comes with BF4 for free. 660 is a decent card though still.

Perhaps but I think 3 years for a MSI is enough and the better cooler is worth it as well.

It's not just the length of the warranty that is important but also the turnaround time, somewhere EVGA has MSI totally licked. The better cooler is marginal at best, 1 degree cooler under load and makes 0.7dB less noise.

Can anybody recommend a GPU to go into this build for a maximum of £230? I did have this Gigabyte 2GB GTX 760 but I did a bit of fiddling and ended up with some budget left over and was wondering whether it's worth squeezing in a more powerful GPU. Also, if you have any feedback about the rest of the build I'd appreciate that too. Thanks in advance.

I'd grab a 280X, stock due soon on these possibly but they are on back order so it might not be guaranteed

http://www.dabs.com/products/msi-am...r--r9-280x-gaming-3g--916M.html?q=280x&src=16

On the Nvidia front the 760 is a good card too, £200 for this Gigabyte or £207 for EVGA

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/...scards/nvidiagtx760series/02g-p4-2765-kr.html

Out of those two the 280X is the better card if and when it comes into stock but you'll not go wrong with either.

Will the 550W PSU I have in the build be sufficient for an MSI R9 280X, or should I go for a 600/650W to be safe?

I built my current PC about 5 years ago and it performed admirably until my graphics card recently died, I haven't followed the current trends but I'd like to replace it with a moderately priced (£50+) new card that would play indie games and some new games on low-mid settings.

Motherboard Asus P5Q PRO P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
PCU Corsair 650W TX Series PSU
Graphics (Deceased) PowerColor HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card
CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Socket 775 (3.0GHz) 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache

Would any kind sir/lady please suggest a new graphics card based on the above criteria?

I enabled the fast boot option on my friends PC. The damn thing boots into windows in less than 10 seconds from a cold start. I'm jealous. This isn't a good time for me to upgrade but with my personal current machine, the majority of my boot time is spent doing the bios POST with my old ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard.

Unless you go used £50 is buying you nothing worthwhile.

Just a couple of months from getting my 2 780ti's. Debating on the Zotac ones and trying to save money and get a 4TB HDD or just get the slightly more expensive 780ti variants.

If your going to spend that kind of money get the best. Depending how long you are waiting you might want to lookout for maxwell, rumors should start popping up in a few months time

After having had the 780 Classified model with the ACX cooler be careful on using more than 1 of the open type coolers in a case. You have to move a serious amount of air through your case otherwise they are going to raise the ambient case temp drastically.

I am extremely happy with the reference cooler noise levels, even with an aggressive fan curve, they have negligible impact on the rest of my components.

The ACX SLI was raising my HDD temps to 50c and causing them to spin up and even heating my SSD to similar which is in its own temperature zone on the other side of the motherboard tray.

I like Ryan Shrout's take on the Litecoin price hike of the AMD cards having a negative effect, with gamers more likely to buy Nvidia now with the AMD price hikes and lack of availability. It makes sense if they get used to the Nvidia ecosystem with the Geforce Experience, shadow play, g-sync, etc. Whereas the people buying the AMD cards for Litecoin mining are not loyal and just buying to get the best performance for the mining.

Check event viewer and post an errors you find there. Check it immediately after the freeze to see if one error in particular is happening.

So what do you want to know in the event viewer ? Just came back today and the thing is crazy, 4-5 mouse freezes in less than 10 minutes. I'm at my third reboot.
The event list is insane, here is just today :

Yeah it's bad for AMD but they can't control the pricing and I'm sure they're trying their best to get as much stock out there as they can.

I know it's the retailers fault and not AMD's. I do find myself hoping that Litecoin is a failure and people trying to make easy money lose a shit ton of it.

Hey guys.

I currently have my primary display (HP ZR24w) which is connected to my gpu (HD 5870) via displayport. My tv is connected to the gpu via hdmi. I only project the image to my tv (using Win-key + p choosing the projector only option).

If I would get a new monitor in the future and still keep my old monitor as secondary display, is there a way to share the desktop with only the two monitors and transfer the picture to my tv when required? Also is there a way to have other display to be in vertical mode and the other in horizontal? I assume I would need a new gpu with more ports and possible an program to handle the desktops?

The event list is insane, here is just today :

Edit -
To be more accurate, here is a list of suspicious events for the past hour

And for the error message after a reboot -

Seems to be a definite driver issue. Lots of people on the GeForce forums complaining about the same problems. Downgrading to 314.22 drivers seems to have fixed the problem for most people.

Thank you, I'm really appreciative of everyone input on this. I will try a downgrade as the plan for this christmas is one or two cheap HDDs and surely not a full fledged video card...

Edit - Or try to disable the Load Line Ccalibration thingy mentioned in you link. Is it safe ?

This is more of a software question than hardware question so I apologize if it's too far afield of the topic, but I know some of you know everything there is to know about GPUs...

I have a GTX 460 and I haven't been able to use an Nvidia driver past 314.22 without encountering temporary freezes and cursor glitches. When I googled the problem if found some other complaints about the same problem with 560Tis but no real solution.

Is this something that will be fixed eventually or is it just what happens when your graphics card is out of date by a few years?

It wouldn't be as hotkey easy as it is right now, but yeah it's possible.

And you can specify rotation in your drivers, so you wouldn't need a new GPU to do any of these things (unless your current one only has 5870 only has 2)

Ok, cheers.

I currently don't even have enough space for another display, but it is good to know there are ways to make this scenario work.

Just downgrade the driver. Haven't been able to go past 314.22 at all on 460 and 560 cards, and they have only just recently started working on the problem and releasing beta drivers to fix it.

Can anyone tell me if my current RAM would be compatible if I upgraded to Z87 / 4770K, at least as a temporary stopgap?

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL

  • DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
  • Timing 9-9-9-24
  • Cas Latency 9
  • Voltage 1.5V

(I'm asking if the system will boot with RAM of that speed, not if it will give good OC results)

It will be perfect.

Yes it's safe. LLC helps provide over clock stability but is actually outside of intel spec.

Hey guys one question in PS4 equivalent.

How much more powerful is the GTX 780 compared to the PS4?

Also, can I get Ass Creed IV at 60fps average on 1080p with it? I only got Ass Creed IV for free, the only code that hadn't been used.

So just wondering what the performance will be.

Thanks.

Significantly. The PS4's GPU is around 660 levels.

Depends on the settings and the area, but you should get around 60+ with dips to the 40s.

A 780 would be enought to playin 2560x1440p (if you drop the AA a little) so..

Thanks. Will keep that in mind.

Ok so I've been out of PC gaming for a while now.... The last card I installed was a voodoo 3. Having said that I have a HP Pavilion desktop with an A85500 APU, 8gb ddr3, 1 tb had 7200rpm, and amd radeon 7560d. Using a benchmarking tool I was able to tell in noob terms that the PC had pretty solid performance with the gpu needing an obvious upgrade.

My question is in you opinion what is the most beefy card this rig can handle, and which would you recommend? Many thanks Sr gaffers
