Also, one more thing, the Enthoo Pro case I ordered doesn't exactly fit with theZ97 motherboard I ordered, as only 6 out of the 9 pins are able to fit. Will this be alright for my PC, or am I fucked in this regard?

I have the same case so I'll see if I can help you. First of all which motherboard are you using and second what do you mean by "pins"? Stand-offs perhaps? If so you are totally fine.

The stand-offs that secure the motherboard to the case? You're fine. My mATX board didn't line every stand-off perfectly, even with an mATX case.

Yeah, I think they are the stands offs, so I should be fine.

Yep, it's very long (12" vs MSI's 10.5"). Hence why I didn't buy a Sapphire card. However, I guess you can't fault them for trying to fit a competent cooling solution.

Ended up taking a risk and going with this one

For one, my motherboard is Gigabyte as well and I want to try to pair brand names as much as possible.

Also, it seems the only real Achilles heel of the R9 line so far is the drivers, which can easily be patched.

If it doesn't work out, I can always RMA it.

Makes sense, yeah. But I think that pushing more pixels will just always look better when upscaled, if that makes any sense. Like, I have a retina MBP and gaming at a resolution like 1680x1050 still looks noticeably better than 1440x900 despite 1440x900 being exactly 1/4 the resolution.

But if your point is just that "720p and 1080p will look better on a 4k screen than 720p on a 1080p screen because they divide evenly," then yeah.

That is what I mean =, but I'm hoping for someone with 4k to confirm.

it's what i've heard as well.

i've never actually tried those resolutions on my 4k monitor because i feel that my eyes would end up falling out at such low resolutions even when upscaled...but it makes sense.

if i can get around to it this weekend i can try and run a game or two at those awful resolutions and report back

I have 2 4k Sets in my home. A Sony 4k 900a & Panasonic AX800 4k in addition to a Sony 1080p 850a (all 65" in size). When running my Xbox One, PS4 and 360, I find that the image is cleaner on the 4k sets than on the 1080p set. It is not that drastic, it just looks a little cleaner to me than when running the same systems and games on my 4k sets versus the 1080p set. Hope that is what you were asking about?

Sounds like it.

Hawk you may have saved me some work!

What about input lag? Also does that Panasonic have Displayport 1.2 to let you do 4k@ 60hz...? Actually went to a store to take a look at a few 4k TV sets...thinking of eventually moving the Death Star onto one in the future...wasn't sure if that Panny had the ability to do it or not.

NP Smokey. Got to back up my Titan owning brothers whenever I can. I mean, we have to stick together or that menacing, gun touting 120hz/144hz Mkenyon guy will come along and tell us all that its all about high frame rate versus resolution! ::))

Input lag is not too bad. The Panasonic is measured at 32ms, while the Sony 4k I believe is at 34ms. My 1080p Sony set is rated at 18ms which is one of the best for a 1080p screen. I know for competitive gaming that would be high or compared to your typical computer monitor.

The Panasonic does indeed have Display Port 1.2a, which is the reason I got it because it supports 4k/60hz. No other 4k TV has Display Port, sure they all offer HDMI 2.0 (as does the Panasonic) but there is no HDMI 2.0 GPU, so it is kind of pointless if PC gaming is what you want. If you are single card user, the current Nvidia drives allows 4k/60hz, but at a 4:2:0 chroma, but who would want that?

Got anything in 720p to try on both?

Theoretically two monitors whose only difference was resolution, 1080p vs 4k, should display a 1080p image 100% identically to each other. 720p should look worse on the 1080 display since it cannot produce a 1:(natural number) mapping, it needs to do a transformation to make it fit. But tvs do all sorts of weird shit to images so its possible 1080 on 4k could look worse.

No I don't. Would setting the 360 to 720p and then running it to the 4k help answer the question? If so, I may be able to test that for you a bit later or tomorrow if time permits. I moved my 1080p to my bedroom since my wife likes to watch TV in bed and I have the Sony 4k in the living room and the Panasonic 4k in my "man cave".

Most 360 games are running in 720p, even if the console is outputting the menu to 1080p. So it is a pretty ideal console to test, assuming you're not running a Sub-HD game.

Halo games (except 4) are subHD on the console from memory? Call of Duties mostly too.

Gears is all 720 if you've got that series. Most other games are 720.

Nice, got a deal from Craigslist for a MSi Radeon HD 7970 TwinFrozr III Boost Edition
http://www.overclockers.com/msi-hd-7970-tfiii-oc-boost-edition-review

I need a new CPU as well.
My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4642&dl=#ov

What CPU can I install on it that would give me the max performance with the new graphics card?
I'm think a CPU for less than $120 used.

What CPU do you currently have? None of the FX chips are really much of a step up from the old Phenom IIs as far as gaming is concerned.

Edit: I'm pretty sure I have that exact same mobo with a Phenom II X6 1045T in it. Locked multiplier at 2.7GHz, it frame stutters like crazy on CPU intensive games. BF4 with Mantle maxes all 6 cores in single player.

Mine is a single core CPU, pretty low end & been using it for a few years.
So a Phenom II X6 1045T 6 core will be no good then?

Because you bought a cheap TN panel 4k montior
I just changed the gamma vibrant and contrast turned off some features turned on gamemode and it fixed everything.

Just had the config wrong for what I wanted.

From reviews and previews this monitor has been highly rated with colors picture and viewing angels over other TN monitors and some IPS.

See I always have vivid mode on my tv so it's harder to replicate.

I'm happy with it sure I would rather the Asus version same panel but different stand that's the only con I see will post pics tried already but imige hosting sites won't take over 25mb.

Bioshock infinite looks incredible in 4k the pixel density is so clear doesn't need aa it's like a pixar movie.

Well, finally finished assembling all the parts of the PC. I pretty much now just have to work on the BIOS and everything. Quick question, is it necessary to update my BIOS? I have a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H and I was wondering if it already had the latest BIOS installed.

Speaking of which, if I do a clean reinstall of Windows, would I have to do anything to the BIOS?
Re-download it or download drivers for it unless I want problems?

Are 4k monitors worth getting yet?

I currently have a pretty good monitor now (an old, but more than capable Dell S2230MX) but seeing those images in the pc screenshot thread has foolishly made me want one pretty bad. So, are they worth it, or just wait until they're much cheaper and better?

Do you want VA or IPS?
Cheap Chinese 4k monitors are worth it imo.

Usually - if you can find the BIOS version somewhere on your BIOS screen, F6 is the latest, which should be installed as that's the one for the 4690K/4790K.

You shouldn't need to do anything to the BIOS.

So I installed the chipset drivers from Intel and tried whatever chipset downloads Gigabyte had on their website but my SM Bus Controller still shows up as missing drivers in the Device Manager. Do I need to worry about this or just ignore it?

Considering retiring my 2009 built PC.

It has a i7 920 processor, 6GB of RAM and a nVidia 580 GTX.
How far away is DDR4 at this point? Is it worth waiting for, or should I aim for DDR3?

Are you wanting to go Intel's mainstream offering or their enthusiast line up?

Enthusiast will be this year with Haswell-E, mainstream 2015 with Skylake.

So, following on a couple of months later from here:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=116326877&postcount=487

I went with the MSI R9 280x and unfortunately ended up with a screen-flickering issue that's persisted since the day I installed it. Every single test, reinstall and fix I could find and think of has been performed, so it's being picked up for an RMA tomorrow.

As I've told Scan.co.uk I'm happy to just return the card for credit and pay the difference for a different card, I'm going to go back to Nvidia. This is the third Ati/AMD card I've bought and had problems with, so whilst I may just be incredibly bloody unlucky, I'm still sticking from here on with what's always worked for me.

So whilst I was dissuaded from the 4GB 770, is this 3GB 780 model worth the asking price?

LINK

I've only really got the spare cash this month to splash out on the higher-end models. I already know due to other costs coming up elsewhere I won't have it once October/November comes around with the new line of cards.

I'd go EVGA.

You can use the step up program if the 880 comes out and you realllyyyy want it instead http://www.evga.com/support/stepup/ Plus their after sales support is great too.

The SC model is sold out atm http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-...mhz-gddr5-gpu-967mhz-boost-1020mhz-cores-2304 might be worth asking them when they're due stock again.

Hmm...didn't realise about the step-up program. I've had one EVGA before with no problems, so it's a definite possibility.

Rule of thumb. Don't update the bios unless you are addressing a specific issue. There is always the risk of bricking a mobo.

Well, if you are looking at screenshots that are impressing you, there kind of is no point right? Downsampling will get you the same result.

Be sure that you have the necessary hardware to run 4k, else it would be pretty pointless. Personally I don't think they are worth it, but part of that is because I prefer the alternatives such as 120Hz.

I was partly joking, is this possible? :D

Yep. All fans start to die after a certain amount of rotations. Just the nature of friction and decay. Oil might give it a couple of more years if you know how to lube it, I would imagine.

Or you might just make a huge mess... I would just buy new fans.

I'm getting ready to build a new X99 PC (based on pending reviews). I just came across a news article about ULLtraDIMM SSDs (http://www.tomsitpro.com/articles/sandisk-supermicro-storage-ssd-dimm,1-2099.html). I'm guessing they won't have a significant impact on game performance (maybe a good place for a VM or Virtual RAM?). Anyone have any comments?

FPS arent really tied to storage medium because mostly the textures are streamed into the VRAM as the game loads. The only thing an SSD does for games is to reduce load times. VM's get a big boost from SSDs, just as your native OS does.

Every time I make up my mind about a case I run into issues... I talked myself into spending a bit more money rather than getting a totally budget case, and fell in love with the NZXT H440, but I'm concerned about fan choking and cooling problems. I'm going to have a 4690k with a mild OC and an R9 280 in it, which will also be blowing hot air into the case. If anyone's worked with this case, how did you solve the heat issues? Will I have to shell out for a truckload of static fans or remove the front cover to get air moving and decent temps?

You are over exaggerating the problem, in fact there will likely be no problem at all even with a single exhaust fan. As long as air is not lingering the case and there is some flow in/out the case you will be fine. The case comes with 3 120mm intakes and 140mm rear exhaust, that is more than enough.

Do you want contrast / good black levels? You want VA.
Do you want professional color accuracy? You want IPS.
Okay. Thanks. Think I care more about great colors, though good contrast is pretty tantalizing as well..

See, I've went down the downsampling route and just couldn't get it to work (I'm pretty sure it's because of catalyst 14.whatever drivers I've installed), but if I could reliably get it to work, I'd absolutely choose that option as I do really like my current monitor.

And I'm pretty sure my setup can run it:

AMD FX-8350
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X
Windows 7

I say pretty sure because I vaguely remember reading my video card being 4k ready.

I finally have all my parts ordered, I'm going to build next weekend.

Here it is. I'm probably going to be nagging you guys while I'm building it. Considering this is my first build.

Can anybody recommend a good video that shows a step by step tutorial on how to build? I pretty much know how, but a little guidance would make things a lot less stressful.

What do people think about hybrid hard drives? Are they worth getting? I saw a seagate 4TB SSHD and was thinking of getting it for my new PC. Worth it or just stick with a normal hard drive for my big storage needs?

Heres Paul. He was my best friend as I built my rig a few weeks ago (first time builder, also. From scratch that is). Also, don't apply the thermal paste like he did. I like Paul, but he be crazy sometimes.
