Gaf! I'm a few weeks away from purchasing the parts for my new build (will be checking in with a full parts list shortly for some opinions!) but had a few quick questions while I continue to piece theoretical builds together.

1. I'll be running the new PC's Internet connection via WiFi as my router/modem is too far from my PC. I used an old PCI wireless card on my old PC, but am liking the prospect of a Z97 motherboard with built in WiFi for simplicity's sake. Eyes on the Asus Z97 Pro at the moment. A good choice, or am I better off getting a different/better board and a separate wireless card? Original plan - before I went looking for WiFi enabled boards - was something like the Gigabyte UD3H/UD5H.
I plan on minimal - if any - overclocking. (i7 4790K/R9 290)

2. 8GB DDR3 vs 16GB - Worth the price? Looking at Ares GSkill low profile 1866Mhz at the moment, but the 16GB is - as expected - twice the price of the 8GB. Plan for the PC is gaming/video work. Worth the extra initial cost or should 8GB suffice until I find the need to throw in another 2x4GB?

3. PSU - Have been eyeing the Coolermaster PSU in the OP. For an i7 4790K/R9 290 build, would the 650W version suffice? Or am I better off spending a little extra on the 750W so that I'm covered when the 8xx/9xx series roll around and I decide to upgrade?

Thanks Gaf!

So, after some research I'm going with powerline adapters thanks to the replies to my above post. This means I'm no longer limited to the Z97 Pro and am likely falling back to the UD3H (black version because Aesthetic Reasons and I'm silly).
Any other Z97 board recommendations in that price range? Is it worth spending any more on something like the UD5H with an i7 4790K/R9 290 build in mind if I'm not planning on massive over clocking? Will also be going with a separate sound card so on-board sound isn't a massive concern.

Any other thoughts on my question re: 8 vs 16GB of RAM would also be great! :)

Built my "dream build" and it is about $700 more than I was hoping to spend. So might not pick it up as shown, but here is what I would love to just click Submit Order on right now.

MOBO: ASUS MAXIMUS VII FORMULA/WATCH DOGS LGA 1150
$369.99
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz
$339.99
HEATSINK: Cooler Master Hyper N520
$34.99
RAM: CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 2133
$219.99
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5
$484.99
HDD PRIMARY: Crucial MX100
$214.99
HDD SECONDARY: Western Digital WD Blue
$59.99
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000
$169.99
CASE: Fractal Design Arc XL
$129.99

I still need an optical drive, still deciding on that. I may even pick up this Asus BluRay Burner as it is $50 today with a promo code and rebate.

Amazon and NewEgg is literally $10 difference as both are charging me tax, however NewEgg includes $50 in rebates as well, so I would go with them.

I realize this PC is pretty damn nice and I definitely do not necessarily need it to be this nice, but damn this is what I want. To get it closer to that $1500 I was hoping for would mean to scale back the MOBO, CPU and GPU, and go with different RAM. I like these specs, as I tend not to try and do any upgrades for 2+ years (my current build, at least this iteration, has lasted me almost 4 years), so that is my reasoning for going higher end on everything. And I realize this motherboard is extravagant, but it is damn nice.

Nevermind, thought I got the motherboard down, but the one I had chosen only had one x16 PCI Express slot, went down to 8x with SLi, and I may do that down the road.

Where should I put an additional fan if it's on yhe top part of the case? In the front or back?

I also have another I was thinking of putting on the side.

May want to wait a few weeks as info about new nVidia chips may come out (soon-ish). At least you have step up to fall back on.
I'm currently using an old monitor and I was thinking about buying a new one. My budget is 130€ max.

I've seen these two at a good price on Amazon:

http://www.benq.com/product/monitor/gl2450hm/

http://www.asus.com/Monitors_Projectors/VE228HR/

Are they any good?
Most monitors under ~$150 are all middling. Some in the OP or if you find reviews make them slightly better than average or have lower latencies.

Side. If not side, front.

I mean I also put one in the top of the case, but it could be towards the front or the back.

Was checking the Buy/Sell thread in the Gaming Community forum and came across a post selling:

Bitfenix Prodigy Mini Itx Case
FM2-A75IA-E53 Mother Board
AMD A10-5800k
ATI Radeon HD7870 2gb Video card
8Gb 1600mhz Ram
500gb Hard Drive
DVD/CD Drive
Windows 7

What games could I play with a medium/high setting with these specs? Am I right to assume this is closer to a past gen console than a current gen? Sorry, I don't know much about specs.

I would have asked the poster but I wanted an unbiased opinion first.

Hi everyone. I've been thinking of building my first ever gaming PC but have very little knowledge on how to do so. So..

Your Current Specs: None. Starting from scratch.
Budget: $1300/USA
Main Use: Gaming: 5, General Usage like Word/Powerpoint/Web browsing: 4
Monitor Resolution: 1080p. Are you going to upgrade later? Probably not. Are you buying a new monitor? Yes.
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Skyrim, Dark Souls 1/2, GTA V. Is 30FPS acceptable? Yes, but I'd prefer 60 fps. How important is PhysX / SuperSampling / CUDA to you? Not too important.
Looking to reuse any parts?: Nope
When will you build?: Do you have a deadline? I'm thinking researching all this PC stuff first and building it when I have a break from school. (Most likely Thanksgiving Break in November)
Will you be overclocking?: No

The OP has been very helpful and I went to pcpartpicker to get a rough idea of what I want.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/N7BbRB

I have a budget of $1300 but am willing to go a little higher than that. I already have a keyboard, mouse, and speakers so I only need a better monitor. Do you guys think that this is a good build? What can I improve? Any help is appreciated!

Kick ass. Thank you for the heads up. I have by full admission not followed much in regards to the PC component side of things as I really had no need to do so until now.

I can wait, especially if it is news on the GPU side.

Otherwise this build looks pretty solid right? No parts that do not work with each other, etc?

I am assuming the heatsink will fit no issues as well.

So I am going to set all these components up on The Camelizer tonight and set notifications up if they drop below a certain price and may start picking stuff up piece meal.

The Ram, Optical, and PSU are all on sale right now and or come with promo codes, so may pick them up tonight, as that makes me commit, and I also get a decent deal on them.

I'd get a Z97 mobo. And you can get Windows 8 for like $15 off Reddit, if you're comfortable with that (no one here has ever had a problem with it, AFAIK), which would save you enough money to upgrade the GPU to an R9 290. And I'd get a slightly better (600W or so) PSU, but I'm no expert on them so check out some of the ones in the OP.

Also, you should overclock! Its fun!

Starting to have second thoughts about the R9 290. I've read the Gigabyte variant has black screen issues galore. Anyone who has this same card NOT have any problems with it?

Thanks for the suggestions. How would I go about buying W8 from Reddit?

Are there any devices with an exclamation mark in Device Manger?

Curiously enough there does seem to be an issue with the SM Bus Controller in device manager. Could that be causing the 'freezing' issues?

Per the top, overclocked systems typically don't play well with power saving states (called C states). So you either want to disable those C states in BIOS, or mess with the windows power saving options to never hibernate/sleep.

Are the fans plugged into the H80i or the motherboard? If the former, plug them directly into the motherboard and control them that way through BIOS. Set a max fan speed of ~1200 RPM, which will be plenty high.

I haven't even overclocked yet but did mess with some of those hibernate settings earlier. I do put it to sleep myself usually - that's fine right?
Will try the fan stuff later, thanks.

How does 720p and 1080p look upscaled onto 4K monitors?

I don't really want to game at 4K (yet), but at some point I might buy a 4k monitor or 4k television. My intuition is that they actually upscale great, and 720p -> 4k would look better than 720p -> 1080 does because 1280x720 is evenly divisible into 3840×2160 (3x increase on each dimension). 1080p is exactly half in both dimensions. So theoretically, 4k and (eventually) 8k should both perfectly scale, while 720 looks a little bit crummy on a 1080 screen compared to a native 720 screen.

Is this thinking correct?

Guys I could use a hand with the PC I've just recently built. Specs are as follows
SeaSonic M12II 520W 80+Modular PSU
ASUS M5A97-R2 Mobo
AMD FX 6300 6-CORE CPU
Corsair 8GB DDR3 Ram
MSI R9270X GPU

So far everything is working awesome and I'm really happy... except the microphone, I've downloaded the drivers because there's no optical drive and reinstalled them twice (realtek HD) but it will NOT pick up sound from the mic. Tried both front and back ports, it will recognize that I've plugged something in and asks what kind of device it is (mic in) but when I talk it picks up nothing. Strange thing though while I've been trying to troubleshoot it I've had raidcall open and started watching some videos and my friend said he could clearly hear the video play and thought I had fixed it, so it'll pick up noise from videos but not if I scream into the mic? I thought I had connected the wires incorrectly but this has thrown me off. Any suggestions?

nvm it was a loose cable it seems, working now

You need to install the motherboard chipset drivers.

That's disappointing : thanks very much for posting the numbers - I'll have a 4690K under an H60 hydro cooler, so OC is going to be quite important here.

I've had an Asus board for a while now, so I'll go with another. Looks like it's between the Z97-A and Maximus VII Ranger, with prices being about £105 and £125 respectively.

I can't see a debug LED on the Z97-A, and it sure doesn't look as good as the Ranger. The KeyBot feature sounds pretty cool.

I wouldn't worry about the debug led, at most it can be useful in finding the IMC limit, but that can be done other ways.

I bought an r9 280x that was most likely being used for mining for about $180 about 4 months ago and haven't had any issues at all. Components are harder to kill (as long as you're not seriously overclocking) than most people think.
Thanks, I ended up going for the R9 270 for a nice price, it'll do as a stop gap I think. Seller of the 280x wasn't very forthcoming about details on it anyway.

Starting to have second thoughts about the R9 290. I've read the Gigabyte variant has black screen issues galore. Anyone who has this same card NOT have any problems with it?

I don't have the exact same card, but I will say that after reading multiple reviews of the custom 290s, I would lean towards either Sapphire or MSI if you're thinking about purchasing one.

They seem to be the only manufacturers who created a cooling system that was actually designed to work on the 290. The other manufacturers seemed to just slap their coolers on it without testing it for complete compatibility.

I cant can my Samsung 4k monitor to have better quality than my 1080p Sony Bravia W6

How can i calibrate it correctly to have better black levels and quallty

Just shadows and general in games look way better on my tv at 1080p then at 4k on the new monitor.

Example i cant get it to have black shadows like this.
iiE8GVw44Fhpr.jpg

Well i can but not anywhere near the tv levels how can i get the monitor to be full black in a dark room.

every since i used an imac i cant get used to any other monitor.

This may or may not be related to this thread but I could use some sage opinions. From time to time, my computer sounds like it has squeaky mice stuck inside it xD It is quite a few years old by now and I assume it's something to do with my fans but I'm not sure what. Recently I decided to vacuum clean it and also used some compressed air after the fans starting going into overdrive mode when under the slightest duress, and that seemed to fix both the squeaky noises and fan speeds. But it's back again now. Is this common behaviour? It sounds almost as if the fans need an oil change to smooth them up some.

You can't I'm assuming you are speaking about that cheap 28" Samsung 4k display - it uses TN panel - it never will be able to reach deep black levels of VA screens used in tvs.

Probably. Either that or buy new fans.

what would be the best config for this monitor or any monitor being gamma contrast digital vibrance in the nvidia control panel.

Well crap, my GTX 580 just died, and now I am stuck with my backup GPU, a 512MB GT8800. I also have an HD5850 in another PC that isn't being used. If I were to pop in that GPU would I need to uninstall the Nvidia drivers before installing the Radeon drivers, or can they both exist on the same PC? I have never gone from one brand to another without a full rebuild before.

You'd need to remove the Nvidia ones first.

Was looking at the Sapphire. Two observations: 1) The reviews and things people took points off for are incredibly petty and stupid. Hard to get an accurate idea of how well this card actually works. 2) Also, it seems like it's almost 15" long from what I am reading. That seems a bit big for a GPU.

My PC is in one room, comfy couch in another.

Is there some way to send a signal or something to the TV in the other room aside from threading an HDMI cable through the floor?

Yep, it's very long (12" vs MSI's 10.5"). Hence why I didn't buy a Sapphire card. However, I guess you can't fault them for trying to fit a competent cooling solution.

Seems right to me, nice even doubling or tripling.

Whilst I'm really happy with my 670ftw I'm currently saving for when the 800 series launch (because, well I've never had the latest GPU's) and we keep hearing about what the green team have on offer for this winter, but what about AMD?

What do they have in the pipe line that's worth considering against Nvidia(I understand info is limited right now), but do we have any inclination as to what to expect?

IIRC, I've heard AMD's sticking to 28nm too, but that's about it.

Makes sense, yeah. But I think that pushing more pixels will just always look better when upscaled, if that makes any sense. Like, I have a retina MBP and gaming at a resolution like 1680x1050 still looks noticeably better than 1440x900 despite 1440x900 being exactly 1/4 the resolution.

But if your point is just that "720p and 1080p will look better on a 4k screen than 720p on a 1080p screen because they divide evenly," then yeah.

Hello,

I have been considering upgrading my current CPU (i5-2500k), and I am having a hard time making a decision. I want to be able to stream my PC games at 720p, 60fps, 2,000 bitrate with a lower x264 preset than fast. I have contemplated purchasing the 4930k, but I don't know if it will be worth it in the long run.

If I were to purchase a 4930k, I would also need to buy a LGA 2011 motherboard, and a H100i. My other option is the new 4970k with a LGA 1150 motherboard. How much of a difference will the 4930k will make? Is it worth spending more money on it?

Edit: Also, will the h100i fit in the Define R4?

Not enough to warrant a $500+ purchase, just OC your 2500k

Buying 4930 is waste of money - in a month you will have Haswell-E cheap 6 core cpu on the market.

Also I have to say Phanteks coolers look totaly awesome :)

BUcfh7K.jpg

But i have too high ram - I'll need to move front 140mm fan to the rear and put 120mm in front :)

I have it overclocked to 4.4, and the processor is not capable of streaming at 720p, 60fps, with a lower preset than fast. Sadly, I can't go higher than 4.4 because it becomes unstable. I looked at CPU Benchmarks, but I don't know how useful are those benchmarks for my situation.

Every time I make up my mind about a case I run into issues... I talked myself into spending a bit more money rather than getting a totally budget case, and fell in love with the NZXT H440, but I'm concerned about fan choking and cooling problems. I'm going to have a 4690k with a mild OC and an R9 280 in it, which will also be blowing hot air into the case. If anyone's worked with this case, how did you solve the heat issues? Will I have to shell out for a truckload of static fans or remove the front cover to get air moving and decent temps?

Hey guys, I'm right now building my PC right now, but I was wondering if it's recommended to use two fans on my 212 EVO Heat sink. I only have one fan right now, so is it alright if I just use that fan for now and install a second one later, or is it alright to forgo the second fan entirely?

One is all you need.

You'd be better off building a cheap second pc that handles the streaming duties.
