The motherboard doesn't include any WiFi-adapter of any sort, but Ethernet is still there of course. Do you really need WiFi?

EVGA is a great PSU-brand, 750W is plenty for your system. H100i is a good, closed watercooling option.

I'm not in the US though so I can't tell if it's a good deal or if there are any rebates or anything.

I have almost the exact same setup. It looks good. Evga PSU is great. You will need to get a WiFi adaptor/card. H100i is a great cpu cooler. Not sure what else to say, it looks great.

With his budget it's either going to be an i5 4690K (which he'll OC later) and R9 280X, or an AMD 8350 (don't know anything about overclocking on AMD CPUs) and a GTX 970. He wants a machine that will last him a couple of years. He thinks the i5 will be more suitable for that following the thought that he could always pick up a better GPU somewhere down the line. Easier to deal with than installing a new CPU.

However, he recently acquired a 4K monitor. It fell off the back of a truck. So I urged him to get a 970 because a 280X ain't gonna cut it. I don't know anything about AMD CPUs so I don't know what to tell him.

Looks so good. From what I've read they are quite nice but are not going to get the universal praise that their big brothers do.

So many great looking new small form factor cases coming out. It really is making me think about what my next build is going to be.

I've also noticed that a lot more cases without ODDs are coming out, but also we're getting more cases with suspect cooling abilities in terms of ventilation. While the H440 isn't awful at cooling, it is a bit restricting.

You say that you'll buy the case locally, but do you know what case you'll purchase? That's going to have a big influence on any incompatibilities.

You'll need to add something like the Intel Centrino Advanced N6205 to have wifi on that set-up.

You can easily* add an €80 Euro SSD later when you have the funds. Replacing the GPU is a much bigger deal. The 970 is the sweet spot right now IMO. Prioritize it.

SSD doesn't impact game performance. OS performance and some game load times but when it comes to priorities you have to put a GPU above a small OS SSD.

Having a Problem with my PC.

Specs are:
MSI Z97 PC Mate
G3258 CPU not overclocked
4gb GTX 770
8gb ram
Crucial m4 256gb
650Watt PSU Silencer MKIII

I tried to turn it on this afternoon, and it will not boot up to windows. It goes straight to a screen that says "EFI Shell Version 2.31" and then allows me to type. I type exit, and it takes me to the bios. I checked in the bios, and it shows up as my SSD not being plugged in. I tried switching SATA ports, but still doesn't show up. Would this more likely be my SSD or my Mobo?

Be a good friend and lend him a few bucks to get an S340 instead and drop the optical drive. It will be much better.

It seems to me that cases are trending either towards open w/ air flow and quiet with a lot less air flow. I think a lot of people must be running fans at 100%....even without overclocking, so that they can be sold on quiet cases.

Maybe we could start recommending the NZXT Grid+ (or similar) to everybody, to get those fans under control.

I have an Air 540, which is all air flow and zero sound dampening, and it is quiet as hell, with cougar fans on everything zonked down to 40%.

Are you planning to run a second graphics card in the future? You can save a bit by going with these alternative parts.

If you plan to run only a single graphics card, then you can go down to a lower capacity PSU, I recommend the Antec HCG 620 watt PSU for $80. If you do want the extra capacity to run a second graphics card, then I recommend the still cheaper Rosewill Capstone 750 watt PSU for $85, which had a very good review.

if you don't mind going down to 1866MHz RAM, then you could get 16GB G.Skill DDR3-1866 RAM for $124. You don't have to worry about getting low profile RAM as you have a water cooler, and that means it won't physically interfere with the RAM.

Otherwise your parts look fine.

Parts and prices look fine to me. There's a Gigabyte R9 280 Windforce for $195 after $30 mail in rebate that might be slightly better. I have nothing else to add or change.

Having a Problem with my PC.

Reset BIOS to default settings? Tried all the different SATA ports? How about a different SATA cable? Make sure SATA power is plugged in, or try a different SATA power cable from the power supply. If you have another computer, I'd suggest taking out the SSD and testing it in the other PC.

I've been waiting to buy one since they were announced, but they are more expensive than I thought they'd be. Are there better matx cases in the sub $150 price range?

I upgraded from a phenom II x3 720 + 6950 to a 4790k + 290 over the summer and its been chillin in my ~7 year old antec 300 for like 4 months lol.

A GPU upgrade seems to be the best solution. Also look into overclocking that 3570K. Do you already have a decent CPU cooler? What's your budget?

Was just talking to him some more, maybe I should take the issue to Tech Support gaf. He's not a genius but he's pretty tech savvy, but he told me he is having issues with the CPU temps on stock clocks, he has a 212 for the heat-sink. He also complains about the fact his HDD's are loud and claims his RAM is "messed up". Whether he knows exactly what that means is beyond me.

I mean even if he were to build a new machine a 970 would still be good for the following years most likely, so that's what I'm thinking of. I'm not trying to spend much more than $300 hence the 970 being an option, if I were more affluent I'd go for a 980 for him but that's just not in the cards.

Hmm.. seems like he may not know what he's talking about, or it's just poor communication skills. What exactly is he having issues with? More specifically, what games is he having trouble running?

And if he did spill something on his computer, well.. that could've shorted out anything and cause tons of issues or none, if he was lucky.

Ideally, you should just get the latest Nvidia drivers. The disc is just there if you can't get the latest ones for some reason or another.

If you had old drivers (particularly Radeon drivers), the safest thing to do is to run Display Driver Uninstaller to get rid of them for sure, then afterward you can install the latest Nvidia drivers.

Was just talking to him some more, maybe I should take the issue to Tech Support gaf. He's not a genius but he's pretty tech savvy, but he told me he is having issues with the CPU temps on stock clocks, he has a 212 for the heat-sink. It's hard to diagnose issues when we have to few details. But I agree, a 970 or a similar card will do wonders for him.

Just reinstalled Windows again, and installed a new GPU and PSU. However, I only get a black screen.

I can only assume it's posting, because if I hit the power-switch it doesn't instantly turn off (usually if there was a problem, that would normally happen)

PC runs fine when GPU is not connected to the PSU. Although, if I leave it in the PCI-E slot it lights up etc., but is not utilized, obviously.

As soon as I connect it to the PSU, I get the black screen treatment. Whether I connect via; mini-displayport from the gpu or the board itself (HDMI,mini-displayport or displayport) the result is the same.

I've even had the PC boot up (after trying the GPU connected, then disconnecting again. Powered off in beteen of course), and had a 'insert boot device error'. Booted fine after that though. Not sure if the problem is related.

I'm also using two seperate 8 pin leads to power the card, as advised. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. didn't think i'd up until 1:00am trying to figure this one out.

I did that. Got them from nvidia site before switching out the video card. As I said, up and running.

It's possible to get the card running without the latest drivers. Yes, the disc likely only has drivers, but could also have other utilities like MSI Afterburner, you can install the latest version from here, it's recommended as a very good overclocking and fan control utility for most graphics cards, not just MSI models.

By default windows comes with its own AHCI controller, and my SSD functions without it. The thing I'm noticing is that when you install Intel's rapid storage technology, it comes with Inte's AHCI's drivers. So the question I have, which is better? Also, having IRST + Samsung magician redundant? What's the most optimal setup fro an ssd. Between this shit, and the power saving stuff in Magician is pretty confusing, and I'm not sure which nets the most performance.

Any advice please.

If you have an extra PCI-E slot try plugging the GPU there and retry.

If you have a spare GPU I would use that and test if it boots. If it boots then it could be a bad GPU. If it doesn't then the PSU could be suspect.

Reset BIOS to default settings? Tried all the different SATA ports? How about a different SATA cable? Make sure SATA power is plugged in, or try a different SATA power cable from the power supply. If you have another computer, I'd suggest taking out the SSD and testing it in the other PC.

Yep, tried it all. It looks like the SSD is dead. I plugged in an old HDD I had around, and it was shown in the bios no problem.

How is crucial with RMAs? This is the first time I ever had to RMA something. I got the drive only in 2013 so its still under warranty.
