I'm sorry you're having these problems. I've seen a few suggestions online for people seeing the nvlddmkm.sys crashes with nvidia SLI that say you should install the GPU drivers with all cards installed and the SLI bridge removed. Then shut down and install the bridge.

If you haven't already, if I were you I'd test each card in 2-way SLI to rule out a dodgy GPU.
 
So I just ordered my first set of parts (mostly things I am sure I want to get: like case, SSD etc.) Just haven't decided on which CPU/GPU to get just yet.

No hurry though, holiday doesnt start until next week.

Im excited to start my first build!

Yes if your onboard sound card supports it (both my last 2 pc's have, so I'm guessing it's common?)

As in same soundcard hardware. If one is USB, it has it's own DAC so won't be controlled by the PC's soundcard software.

I want it so badly, but there isn't a single-slot Nvidia card that can take advantage of of the monitor. The fact NV didn't release a dual GPU 780ti card is a travesty.

I tried different combinations of GPUs. The board has 4 PCI-e switches that I can use to enable and disable the PCIe lanes. If I had the 1st and 3rd card enabled for example, whenever I enabled the 2nd card in NVCP it would do the usual flicker when enabling SLI. Then it would blue screen me and with the nvlddmkm.sys error and reboot. Once it got past the Windows screen it would blue screen again and say SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION error. It would keep doing this until it went to Automatic Repair/Diagnosis. That didn't work.

I got a nvlddmkm error when using 1 card or 3. Didn't matter :(

Try a fresh install of Windows on an old disk before wiping your main SSD.
 
I checked the spreasheet in the op, and since the price/feature gap between the GA ud3h and the SOC Force is quite wide (specially since I can't find the SOC force for less than 200€) I wanted to as if there is anything worth the extra cash between those two.

I don't want to expend 200€ on a motherboard, specially since I wont be using LN2, nor watercooling (for now, at least), so the special conditioning the mobo has is wasted.

Looking through other options, the following motherboards caught my eye:

GA-Z97X-Gaming 7 at 157€
GA-Z97X-UD5H at 166€
GA-Z97X-SOC at 178€
Asus Maximus VII Ranger at 160€
Asus maximus VII Hero at 180€

I'm going to buy it coupled with an I7-4790k (for gaming purposes, mosty), and I want to OC it as much as I can, but since I am on air (NH D-14+Corsair Air 540) I guess none of the mother in the price range would do bad. However, as much as I read about their VRMs, their power phases and the extra software, I don't know wether the improvements are worth their price or not.

Which motherboard would be best, considering I don't want to spend a lot of money, unless the perks can justify the cost? Should I really stick with the UD3h and forget about the rest? I kinda wanted a nicer one, though, which is why I'm asking since I'm at a loss here.

I have a CoolerMaster V850 and the fan almost never turns on. When it does I can't even hear it, I only know by seeing the fan spinning. It may as well be fanless.

That's a tough decision I have to say. A lot of the features on a lot of the high priced boards can be called "overkill" depending on your usage scenario. For a moderate type of OC on air, with a single GPU, for a pretty straightforward gaming build....then there really is not a lot of reason to pop for the really high end boards that have a lot of features you don't need.

Software is a big factor for me. I find ASUS Bios/Uefi to be superior to the others....but that may just be personal taste. YMMV. And the main manufacturers all have good working software, the difference is feel and useability mostly. Watch some video reviews to get a feel for software. (OC3DTV on youtube is good, very in-depth.)

If the money you save can go towards GPU....it would be a much better purchase than a "higher-end" motherboard. UD3H or Z97-A are good choices.

I really liked the z97-A's design, so I had that in mind at first, but I was a bit taken aback when I looked up its power phases. However, I'm watching the mobo's review in the channel you recommended and it doesn't seem to be all that bad, so I'm reconsidering it.

Also, I wasn't planning to upgrade my GPU, since I have a HD7950 running right now, and while I could sell it and grab another one, I need a bit more time before making that decision. Since the only problem I have right now is getting ~120fps on newer games, I am not really concerned about the GPU, but saving up towards better ram, or even a better SSD might be a good idea (going with a 256GB mx100 right now).

Does this fan config make sense? Trying to troubleshoot why my 4790k runs so hot under load. Last night I disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled my Hyper 212 Evo and not much has changed temp-wise.

Fans 1 and 3 are stock Define R4 fans. Fan 2 is a Cougar (blanking on the name but it's black and 120mm). Fan 4 is the stock Hyper 212 one.

Also the 4790k runs up to 4.4ghz, does it automatically overclock? Is it my mobo (Gigabyte z97x ud3h)?

I'm seeing a lot of similar questions on the i7 forum on Tom's Hardware so maybe these chips are just hot?

Any insight appreciated.

Fan 2 should be intake.

Need more details on your settings. Voltage, etc.

According to the Bit-Tech article in the OP, the best set-up for temps would be Cougar on the side as intake, and front fan to rear roof as exhaust and leave the others the same.

Don't know if it will help in your case, but worth a try?

I'd make fan 2 intake. What are your temps?

It'll automatically overclock 1 core to 4.4GHz, so thats normal.
 
So I've built a new PC, i5-4690k and a Gigabyte Z97x-UD3H.

My old build is an i5-750.

I have a GTX660ti as my video card, my old computer doesn't have onboard video. I'm thinking about selling my old computer to a friend, because it's still a good computer even though it's four years old.

My question is, if I sell my old computer for ~$500 with the 660ti, is there a new card for $350 or less that will be a significant improvement over my 660ti? I'm trying to decide if I should sell the old computer to him with the 660ti in it or just tell him to get his own card.

Also, how the hell can I figure out what a fair price for the old computer is? These are the parts:

Haven't been keeping up with the news since earlier in the year, but remember it being rumored to be available by the end of 2014. Wondering as I held off buying a 780 earlier deciding it would be better to wait for the next gen, as per many people's plans. However now I'm unsure if the series will even be available this year.

Just finished assembling everything up (a few hours ago actually) and all that's left was to install Windows. I'm installing Windows with a flash drive and every time after the final process of installing, or when it reboots to complete the installation, I get a BSOD. I tried both Windows 7 as well as Windows 8. Also tried to install Windows on both the HDD and SSD. Same results; BSOD.
Can anyone help? I'm so tired. :(

I'm still leery of Crucial drives. My two M4's have both suffered from just disappearing from the system and hanging Windows, requiring a reboot and then the drives not even showing up in the BIOS until I cycle power a couple of times. It only happens every few months, but it is annoying. I thought it was a motherboard issue, but I had it happen on my newly built Z97 system minutes after finishing a windows install, so I think the drives are the most likely culprit at this point.

This is the sole reason I haven't gotten a single larger MX100 to replace my two M4s.

No one knows anything until maybe a few weeks before it happens. No idea when that is going to be. Anything else is just total speculation and guessing.

Hm, thats REALLY weird. My first guess is maybe there's some sort of driver problem, since Windows is installing some drivers as part of the installation, and maybe they're messing with your hardware and making you BSOD.

Do you know what the BSOD error code is?

Not sure when it's Windows 7, but on Windows 8, the error is "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR".

Some sort of hardware error then. My guess, and again this is REALLY a guess, is it could be the GPU. If no one else has a better idea, try removing the GPU and installing windows using the integrated GPU and see what happens.
 
Finally got my new rig all put together. Loving the performance so far - such a huge upgrade from my previous pre-built set.

I was thinking about getting in to over clocking. I have an I5-3570. Would it be worth it or should I just upgrade my CPU? Would I need liquid cooled or just a good CPU cooler?

Sorry for the late reply. My clock ratio is currently set to 37 and I haven't touched BLCK at all. My Clock Control is even disabled for BLCK, so I guess that means I can't do anything with it at all anyway. I manually put my system memory multiplier to 1600.

Don't do that, enable "XMP Profile".

Once you change the speed, it's no longer on XMP. XMP is there to have the memory set at the factory binned speed/timing. Going outside of that can cause boot issues.
