Thanks!

As you have the same card, would you please tell me what build you own and the result it achieves in games?

Because many YouTube video shows lower fps because of recording im not too sure about what im actually gonne get with this card and i5 4590 8gig 1600mhz.

Thank you

What resolution do you play at? I'm actually getting my card today in the mail. I'm downgrading from a 980 Ti (card has a fan issue, and I also want to take less of a hit when Pascal comes out), so I don't have any first hand experience yet, but from what I've read the 970 is still a really good card for 1080p/60fps @ high/ultra settings.

I would suggest looking up some benchmarks for some games that you plan on playing, but the 970 is no slouch and will be infinitely better than current consoles' power.

Your i5 is current and shouldn't be a bottleneck. I have a 6600k and 8gb 3200

I'm looking to play at 1080p60fps. I know Witcher3 is a sucker but I'm not afraid to lower shadow and stuff to obtain 60 frame per second.

With my Rift coming in a month or two, my PC will be left wanting.

Still running a 2500K and GTX 680.

I really can't justify buying a 970 or 980 Ti now though. Not with the Canadian dollar and with the next generation around the corner.

Had there been any indication of when NVidia might release their next generation of GPUs?

We don't know yet. In 6-10 months is the best you'll get.

I think I remember reading that by around the middle of the year (some of) nvidia's new GPUs should be out.

Ugh...I thought I was looking at a Q1 release. Stick with my GTX 680, spend $500 on a GTX 970, $900 on a GTX 980 Ti, or wait it out. The Canadian dollar really screwed things up. I could have gotten a GTX 970 over a year ago for 30% less than i would pay now. :(

I think Q2 is more likely.

If it's just for VR I would wait until it comes out. By then we'll probably have some rumours about when the new gpus are coming out.

Okay.

So Im planning to upgrade from GTX 690 to whatever Pascal brings, from 12 GB RAM to maybe 16 GB RAM and from my current processor Intel Core i7 2600 3,4 GHz to a better one.

When? I have no idea, but Im currently sparing money.

My question is: Is there anything in my current PC I have to change (thinking about compatibility issues)? Like do I have get a new motherboard or something for the upgrade?

late Q3-Q4 Is supposed to be for AMD and high end Nvidia too or Q1 of 2017.
But you can buy a 980ti for $650 now and sell it for 400 by the time new ones are out

We even do not know how good early Pascal cards are going to be. Yes Nvidia is promising real boosts, 4k gaming etc. , but rumors are that first low-mid/high level entries (maybe even the 970 equivalent) will 'just' have some kind of 'normal' but faster ddr5 ram. Overall they'll be more performant but I do not think they'll be what people are expecting.
The 'real' performance heavy Pascal HBM2 cards will be released one or two months later.

But who knows, maybe rumors aren't true and I'm just completely wrong.

In the end, it always comes down to this: Is your current system performing good enough for you, then do not upgrade (and this is very subjective). Do you want/need more power now, then go for it because there is always a reason to wait a couple of months for the next/better GPU. That's the only criteria (besides bills, of course) I'm looking at.

I was tempted to pull the trigger on a 980 ti for my new desktop I am building (sold my motorcycle, have about 3k after I paid the wife off to spend)...

I may just hold onto it and see what comes out this year then.

What bike was it? I'm a 2 wheel gaffer too.

If you're building a new desktop there's nothing wrong with the 980 Ti. They might not even release big pascal this year, who knows. For the guy who's specifically upgrading for Oculus though it doesn't hurt to wait until it ships to see if anything develops.

I returned my 980ti for a 970, because I didn't want to take a huge hit on resale when Pascal drops (it also had a bad fan), but if an equivalent is literally a year a way, kinda wish I just got another 980ti.

I think a 970 would be a good stop gap card to use while waiting though, and the initial cost and resale hit would be lower.

EDIT: Yeah, what bike was it? I'm also a rider!

The integrated intel graphics solution supports two monitors. If it's meant to be a facebook and office PC for your aunt then it's probably even a bit overpowered. For gaming? It's way too underpowered. Price is nothing exceptional, but not totaly awful either (hard to tell without knowing what ddr3 ram and mainboard they are using, but probably nothing great).

For a new CPU you'll definitely need a new motherboard. If you're going with the latest generation, that will also require new RAM (DDR4 instead of DDR3)

Depending on how old it is, you may want to replace the power supply. It's not a compatibility thing, but I wouldn't feel comfortable using an old PSU with a bunch of shiny new stuff

There will be no gaming. Wondering if my uncle plans to do any video editing now that I think of it. Just messaged him.

It's about on par with buying the parts separately, including the OS. For $620 it's nothing special.

If all she's doing is web browsing and keeping up with the stock market, you could just build her a cheaper PC. Just about any PC nowadays can handle dual monitors easily, no need for a dedicated graphics card. For her needs, an i7 processor and 16GB of RAM is overkill.

Ok. Yea as my uncle says "She wants something fast that can jump between dual monitors and graphs etc.etc.

Gonna start trying to piece more together now, thanks for the advice thus far from everyone.

Hi guys, I really don't keep up with hardware, and I'm wondering if I could have some pointers as I upgrade my system.

I currently have:
-an intel core i7 processor 920 @ 2.7ghz
-an old Dell motherboard from 3+ years ago
-a Radeon 6800 Gfx card
-6 GB RAM

I'd like to upgrade the system to something middle-of-the-road today, and was looking at components mainly from the OP's "great" section.

Here's what I had chosen to upgrade to, given recommendations in OP:
-intel core i7 4790k 4.0Ghz processor
-ASRock z97 Extreme 3 Motherboard
-Not sure
-8GB + RAM

Now, for my questions:
-Am I going to see a significant performance increase between my old processor and this one? I was a bit surprised to see that my old processor was actually an i7, so I am wondering if the Ghz difference will actually be noticeable?

-I'm looking at the newegg page for this ASRock motherboard, and reviews are very poor for it. I read about 6 reviews in a row that all had this motherboard fail on them after some sort of malfunction that occurs when you unplug it from the wall. So I am going to steer away from this motherboard, but I am wondering if I should be steering away from all ASRock motherboards due to this issue, or if they are generally more trustworthy than this? If not, any recommendations on a different motherboard to select?

-I'd really like to get a video card that shows a substantial increase in performance from my current one (the Radeon 6800). Been experiencing increasingly frequent crashes in games, and I'd like it to stop. That being said, is the 6800 still a decent card? Is it possible that the CPU or amount of RAM I have currently are the causes of the issues I'm experiencing, and not the video card? I'd like to avoid the cost of purchasing a new one if possible.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give. I simply don't really know what I am doing when it comes to hardware, beyond putting it together. :)

Looking to grab a GTX 970 in prep for the Rift shenanigans. Any particular recommendation on which one? I'm currently running an MSI 760 which I did have to go through an RMA for at one point. I don't know if I should stick with them? They did have reasonably good customer service though so it was a painless process overall. Any strong recommendations or perhaps horror stories?

EVGA GTX 970 FTW+ or EVGA GTX 970 SSC are a great choice and EVGA has the best customer support ever.MSI is also good if u buy the 970 Gaming 4G.I really prefer buying EVGA cards though

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm going to be on the look out for some deals in the next few months.

Edit: I may end up going with MSI simply due to the fact that I'm currently hooked up with 2 DVI cables. Maybe that's too extreme on the laziness scale.

Costs a bit less in total, but the Gigabyte B150 motherboard is better quality (going by reviews and specs at least), the Crucial SSD is faster and twice as large, and the PSU is a better choice (more than they'll need but it'll comfortably support any future upgrades).

Does your aunt already have two monitors to use or is she going to need to look for new ones as well?

only thing is that this card is limited and it's estimated to ship out in a few weeks.

will definitely use this as reference and decide between some things. I like the DIY case more and think they will too. The PSU alternative I will end up using. I will stick with the HGST/Hitachi drive (grabbing the refurb for $49).. Thank you for taking the time out!

Just curious: Generally speaking, how many parts do you guys have to replace before you consider something a "new build" or a "new PC" as opposed to just an "upgrade"?

Make sure the Windows service for Nvidia streaming is running. See here for more info (the article recommends disabling it, just follow the steps but obviously check to make sure it is enabled instead).

For me I go by cost and availability. Intel likes to phase out and make older processors incompatible with the latest motherboards, so in some cases you'd be forced to buy new motherboards as well as RAM sometimes.

Can anyone recommend a good wifi card that works okay with Windows 10?

What wireless router do you have? We can recommend something to make best use of what speeds your router is capable of.

Oh, I had no idea you were looking at a refurbished hard drive, I was wondering why you picked an enterprise drive for $113. Good luck with it, I wouldn't go for a refurbished model.

These wireless N PCI-E cards seem to have great reviews. Or would you prefer something portable like a USB adaptor?

Asus PCE-N15 for ~$17
TP-Link TL-WN881ND for $19
Rosewill N900PCE for $31
Well I've been using a netgear usb adapter and my comp stopped recognizing it. Thought the adapter had gone out and got a newer version of the same thing and the same problem occurs. So instead of dealing with that I thought I might as well get a wireless pc card and bypass the usb altogether. The 3 you listed will probably work fine. Thank you.

How hard is it to do? Do you have a guide I can use?

I've overclocked CPUs and GPUs before, but I barely remember what I did. It was back when I was building PCs more regularly.

"It automatically recognizes its host platform and overclocks to the highest frequency published (up to 2666MHz)".

"Kingston said Fury DDR4 memory offers automatic overclocking, which is supposed to increase the speed of the memory just by installing it in a Z170 board. The company claimed no adjustment in the BIOS is needed."

Chipset Vendor Intel
Chipset Model X58
Chipset Revision 12
Southbridge Vendor Intel
Southbridge Model 82801JR (ICH10R)
Southbridge Revision 00
System Temperature 62 °C

Thank you for the help!

Eh i was trying to see if they at least added an Intel motherboard that we could use to at least overclock the CPU but the motherboard is a really basic Dell one....
How much can you spend on upgrading? What do u need exactly???
A new cpu is 20-30% faster than the 920.
Let me know what parts u need to upgrade and how much are u willing to spend.
I believe that not changing the cpu will bottleneck the upgrade for sure since it will be hard to overclock
