If I'm in the market for the GTX 970 (something in that price range) is there any reason to consider going AMD instead?

Hands on: Dell UP3017Q OLED 4K monitor review

4K
120Hz

$5K

latest

I'm hoping to see some more CES monitor announcements. I'm looking to buy this year and would like something better than the current 1440p, 144Hz, Gsync, IPS displays, which are already very good.

GTX 970

Pros
Low power consumption
Nvidia drivers
Low temperatures
Great overclocker
Cons
Already optimised at limit
3,5GB Vram only makes it not so futureproof
7% slower in most games than 390 if not overclocked
OK DX12 Support/Performance

R9 390
Pros
8GB Vram
Good future DX12 Support
Faster than 970

Cons
Power Loads
OK Temperatures
Bad Overclocker
AMD drivers

Its more of a matter of preference really what u want to buy and also if you like AMD/Nvidia and if your case has good airflow. Also your PSU matters too.

For 970 get
EVGA GTX 970 FTW+

R9 390
SAPPHIRE R9 390 NITRO

A gtx 970 is certainly not what u want for VR..I would actually wait for Pascal (Late 2016) if i wanted to buy a new GPU right now.If u are in a hurry you should go for the 980 TI.It can handle VR nuch better than 3.5gb 970.

And no prices wont change much unless a new card releases or AMD decides to drop the prices more

I'm actually in this same boat, but I'll likely be stuck with a GTX 970 due to financial reasons. Don't know if I could swing anything higher :/

Anyone got suggested dust filters and fans I could buy? I've got a Corsair 200R and I've been thinking about adding a fan or two to its stock configuration (1 fan in front, 1 fan in rear), alongside filters.

I got £40 in Amazon vouchers for Christmas, still haven't used them, so suggestions of stuff I could buy on there would be nice.

Hey guys, sorry if this is a dumb question but how does mail in rebate work on NCIXUS? Do I just buy something at its current price and Im good to go?

Never bought anything on NCIX, but I'm pretty sure they're all the same.
You buy the product at it's current price, make sure to print and fill out the rebate form, then once you get the product cut out the bar code (or whatever it's asking for) and along with the rebate form mail it to the address provided and now you wait to get one of those pre-loaded debit cards which might take a few weeks to a few months.

I would likely just set a budget you would like to spend and check the BST as well as your favorite retailers. They haven't dropped a lot in a year, probably won't in the next few months.

Jet has an EVGA 970 for about $280 shipped right now.

I need some guidance please!

I'm finally overclocking for the first time. I got good results on my R9 280 and could push it further I think, but I'll going to leave that how it is.

My concern is my CPU. I used this video to help OC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cOBaW_9U3A

I overclocked my i5 4690K to 4.0 ghz and my voltage is set at 1.076

I've been running Prime95 for the past 35 mins and all tests have been passed. My concern is my tempatures. After 5 mins, they have been hovering up to 85C. After tens mins, the highest a few of my core's have reached was 92 C, but that was just for a second. Around 99% of the time this test has been running after the first 10 mins, my cores have remained at 85C to 89C, staying under 90C and fluctuating.

I'm assuming that these temps are high, but is this something I need to be very concerned about? Install the CPU was a bitch in my silverstone case and this is an mITX build where everything inside is cramped. I'd really love to not have to open this thing and reapply thermal paste.

For further background, during the past year, I've usually seen the CPU idle at around 30C and stay at 30C - 40C most of the day with no issues and when I'm gaming, I've never seen it go above 60C.

EDIT: Wtf, apparently using the latest version of Prime 95 is bad..? I've ran the test on the newest version for 45 mins. No fails. Temps remained 85 to 90

Can someone explain used video card prices? I'm thinking of replacing my aging GTS250 with something that can ride me over for another year or so. So I went to EBay and Craigslist and searched for various cards such as the GTX760/770, 660/670, Radeon 7970/7950, 7870/7850. Essentially, trying to get a 2011-2013 card. But almost everyone is asking prices that don't make sense. $150 for a 7870? $200 for a 760? $250+ for 770s?

I can get the newer model replacement cards for $20-50 more than these used prices. Heck, the Radeon 380 can be had for $170 new right now. Wtf? Is this normal?

Any suggestions for a basic DVD drive? Here's the build:

At this point I'd say get a cheap USB DVD drive, as I doubt you'll be using it a lot.

If you want an internal one, then you should be able to find an ASUS, LG, Sony, etc drive for around US$20.

Wow I switch to prime95 26.6 and now my CPU temps aren't even going past 80C...

What in the fuck? I hope I didn't damage my CPU since they were running at near 90C for 40 minutes. Why didn't the guide I was following mention about using the proper version of Prime95 and why haven't the developers done anything to resolve this if this is an actual issue?

I'm fucking livid..

It's not the software that's the problem, it's Haswell's design. When using the AVX instruction set, the CPU's voltage will be bumped up slightly.

hey all, I just re-applied thermal paste to my processor after 5 years of use :) how do my temps look for:

i5 2500k oc'd to 4.5
hyper 212 evo fan

This is under full load

Looks great to me.

What do you need a DVD drive for? Windows can be installed via USB drive and it's faster.

This is a hardware issue with Haswell which was corrected in Skylake.

Prime95 28.x uses AVX2 instructions which literally set Haswell on fire. Therefore, when stress testing a Haswell OC, you should use Prime95 27.x and lower which use only AVX instructions. If you are on Skylake, it's perfectly okay to stress with 28.x and the Skylake owners do exactly that.

You should read the right guides.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1411077/haswell-overclocking-guide-with-statistics/0_100

This isn't an issue with Prime95 and there is nothing the developers need to or will do about it. It's an issue with Haswell, the first Intel CPU architecture to implement AVX2.

TjMax for Haswell is 102C. 90C isn't going to make the CPU particularly happy but it's not dangerous, if the CPU is really overheating it will throttle back or simply shut off, resulting in a PC hang or reboot.

For the CD's that come with the mobo and graphics card instead of downloading the drivers online. Trying to make this as easy as possible for my friend hahah, but worst case scenario he can just pick up a USB DVD drive later anyway.

By the way, how much more expensive would that build be if upgrading to an i7? Talking to him now and he's starting to add more on top of the order, saying he might as well add some other things he wasn't planning before (like a wired 360 controller for some games, maybe a new mouse/kb even though he has them already, etc.), so with that attitude, might as welllll think about putting those extra bucks in the PC itself lol

I've had a 2500k for a while now and I'm finally getting around to overclocking it. I've spent the past 6 hours reading what I'm supposed to do and I'm starting to feel dumb for not being able to figure this out. Everything I've tried has not worked for me. I keep getting blue screens and I don't know what to change to try to fix it. All the guides that I read say different things and I have no idea what it is that they're having me change. I'm hoping to get better info here. What settings should I start with? How much should I be changing? From what I'm reading I should be able to get to 4.5ghz with no issues.

I have a Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 motherboard and I'm using a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo.

Ah, I see. For best performance, it'd be a good idea to get the latest graphics card drivers though.

Well, the Xeon E3 1231 V3 ($276) offers the same type of performance as an i7 processor, just without integrated graphics built into the CPU. You can see the main differences here, they're highlighted in the yellow rows. The Xeon is slightly slower but not by much.

NCIXUS also has a price-matching policy, just so you know. If you can, use PCPartPicker to shop around and see if any of the parts you'll be picking up from NCIXUS are cheaper elsewhere. For example, the Xeon E3 1231 V3 processor is only $243 at Superbiiz and $250 at Amazon.com. You can shave off some costs that way. Processors like those i7 and Xeon models would be quite good for video editing as their hyperthreading ability makes them act like 8 core processors despite only having 4 cores, letting them be faster at things like video rendering/encoding. You can see in this article what kind of advantage that the i7 4790K has over the similar i5 4690K processor for Adobe Premiere and x264/x265 encoding, even when both processors are at a similar speed.

I have a regular old 4970 and never want to OC. Every motherboard search I've done ends up with people talking about the best one for OCing. I just want a good one that supports SLI.

What are the rest of your PC's specs? I recommend either the MSI Z97S SLI Krait ($125) or the Asus Z97-E/USB3.1 (~$130).

Which guides have you been looking at? Try this guide for Gigabyte motherboards. It's not the same model, but the BIOS menu options should be similar if not the same. This guide is also for Gigabyte motherboards, but is more technical.

Honestly there's no set budget; I'm just looking to get the most bang out of my buck that'll last me for a number of years, was looking at ASUS VG248QE (23"-24" or above). No opinion between gsync/freesync.

Thanks for those. The first link you have was the last one I tried. It was one of the better ones that I saw. I wasn't just a list of items and what to change the values to and nothing else. I will try the second one tomorrow. It's late now and I need to go to sleep soon. From a quick glance it looks like it's actually explaining what everything does. That'll be helpful for me.

For that cooler, you shouldn't see temperatures higher than the ~70 degree range. Anything much higher than that might indicate something wrong, but processors have thermal protective measures in place so they won't be easily damaged by heat. They'll usually slow down to try and manage heat, and if that isn't enough then the PC will shut down automatically.

That's what I was thinking too.

Huh? Isn't the 970 the card that Oculus reccomends?

The GTX 970 is kind of a low mark to aim for when it comes to VR gaming performance. VR gaming should have requirements much higher than normal gaming on a 1080p monitor. The more GPU power there is, the better and more stable VR gaming will be. That isn't to say the GTX 970 is inadequate.. just perhaps not ideal if anyone's hoping for higher graphics settings.

Can someone explain used video card prices? I'm thinking of replacing my aging GTS250 with something that can ride me over for another year or so. It's sort of counter-intuitive, but somehow old graphics cards can demand a high price because technically they are discontinued and in low supply. If for some weird reason someone absolutely needs that specific model of graphics card.. I think they charge that much because they can get away with it. Maybe try gaf's B/S/T thread.

Thinking of buying a htpc for gaming. I don't really have the time to build one, what are some good places to buy a prebuilt system?

Prebuilt HTPCs? Sorry, we're more of a custom PC thread, we don't know that much about buying prebuilt PCs. If you're looking for a bargain, keep an eye on slickdeals forum for computer deals.

Anyone got suggested dust filters and fans I could buy? I've got a Corsair 200R and I've been thinking about adding a fan or two to its stock configuration (1 fan in front, 1 fan in rear), alongside filters.

I was just looking to buy this at amazon but they have the item under review message up because of complaints.

If you're looking for something with solid reviews, I like the Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI.

i5 2500K, Radeon 7950. Yes on gaming. My friend who helped me build my current PC mentioned I'm due for an upgrade and I'm inclined to agree. He's been itching to build another one :p

The 2500k is actually still quite potent (assuming it's overclocked to 4ghz+). All you really need is a nice new GPU.

Do you want to go to 1440p or stick with 1080p? And you'll have to give a rough idea of what budget you have for the monitor. You can easily spend $800 for a fancy 1440p IPS gsync model. :O

I was about to respond and ask where that info came from other than people who don't use AMD shouting it from the rooftops. Particularly considering that Nvidia has just as many driver issues.

AMD does have less crossfire support than Nvidia does for SLI, but that doesn't affect single GPU users.

Also, Freesync monitors are cheaper than Gsync, so that should have also been listed as an AMD pro.

Hmm I think 1080p would be okay, IPS Gsync 144hz 1ms response time would be nice (features that drawn me to the VG248QE in the first place), with the Canadian dollar doing so poorly right now I'm probably in it around the $200-400 USD range. Still using a Samsung LS20A if that's any indication.

I would be lying if I said the Asus 'Pro' tier monitors hasn't caught my eye.

I'm looking for a Z170 motherboard, but there are too many damn choices! Any advice or recommendations?

Relevant components:
  • i7 6700K
  • 2x16GB memory
  • GTX 980 Ti
  • SATA3 SSD
  • Two SATA HDDs, one DVD
Other considerations:
  • $250 USD upper limit, under $200 preferred
  • I do intend to overclock
  • No particular brand loyalty
  • Would like a PS/2 port
  • Don't care about any of the onboard video connections
  • Single GPU for now, maybe dual in the future, but no need for 3- or 4-way SLI
  • 6 or more USB ports in the back would be good, but if there are dual usb3 headers I guess I can make it up with another front panel adaptor. A 3.1 type-C port is a plus, for the future.
  • From what I've read, I think I want to avoid "Killer" networking
  • No need for dual LAN or wireless

Any suggestions for a basic DVD drive? Here's the build:

You in the US? I have a DVD drive that's lying on a shelf in my dorm room not doing anything. It originally came from an old Dell, but it works perfectly fine—I replaced it with a BluRay drive a couple of months ago. You'd have to wait until I get back to college (~2 weeks), and I'd ask that you cover shipping (I can't imagine it would be more than a few dollars if you live in the US).

PM me if you're interested.

You cant really go wrong with ASUS Z170 Maximus VIII Hero.Doesnt have 3.1 usb but is the most awesome mobo u can buy for that money.
Other choices is Asrock Z170 Extreme 7+....Gigabyte and MSI use Killer Lan.So if you dont like it dont buy their boards
