Hey guys I bought all of my parts yesterday and made a rookie mistake of getting windows 10 via dvd. Unfortunately my case doesn't support a optical drive. Am I boned? I haven't opened up the windows 10 package in case I have to return it so is their still way of getting the OS into my build without a drive?

Does it come with a key? You can use the media creation tool to put a Windows 10 installation on a USB drive, and then use that key that came with your software.

Or, create a DVD image on a USB, or use an external USB DVD drive.

I believe the Xtreme Gaming lineup from Gigabyte is an even higher overclocked card than the G1 Gaming line.

Beyond that, that EVGA FTW one is fine.

Ok, I'll do a bit of benchmark comparisons, but seems like this might be a good option.

New GPUs aren't coming out anytime soon, right? Is this a good time to buy? (There's never a good time. Everything is always old lol.)

I'm about to get a 970. I will be playing at 1080p. I won't be overclocking. Please help me decide between an ASUS or an EVGA (or a third option if there is a truly superior card out there in the same price range). My case can accommodate up to a 12 inch card if I move a drive bay.

I'm willing to go as high as $350 USD if there's really a good reason, but the Strix is looking appealing with its pricepoint due to a rebate this month.

Is there any important difference between these cards? (Noise levels, probability of coil whine, etc)

This is the Strix I'm looking at. (This may be the only Strix there is, I don't know.) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NJ9BJ8G/?tag=neogaf0e-20

If I went EVGA I'd probably get one of the cheaper ones.
I just ordered an EVGA 970 FTW+ the other day

From what I researched, it's quieter than a reference blower type, it has a high clock, has a backplate included, and the EVGA cards are supposed to be some of the best to overclock. They also are supposed to be less prone to coil whine than some other brands.

Can you use task manager to see the core usage while running 3dmark? Its 99% bottleneck.Your best bet would be to buy a new GPU cooler and an FX-8350 and overclock it....
If you have the money it would be even better to go Intel and get an i5.
What is your motherboard,PSU and Case?

Ran Performance Monitor and got this
5cBEhnF.jpg
So it def seems to be hitting max a bit during the 3DMark bench.

Case is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119199
Mobo is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131767
CPU Fan is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

This CPU is OC'ed already also which I did a while ago. Really regret going AMD when I built this PC though.

Do most cases that accept 140mm case fans also accept 120mm fan ones?

Because I'm about to order Cryorig XF140's that screw into 120mm slots.

This thing will live in my living room, silence is *golden* (Wife happiness level important :p), So the extra heat put out by the K would be extremely counter-productive especiallly when I know I won't overclock, I went for the K last time and regretted it hence the 120mm H80i GTX & Define Case - I'm going for silence / low speed fans etc. rather than high heat load, No K means a 240mm AIO would be overkill I think.

If I may offer some input:
I have a 6700K at stock speed, a Noctua NH-L12, a GTX 970 with zero-fan mode and a Corsair RM 650 in a Fractal Core 500 mITX case.
And it is absolutely silent in my small and quiet room when working in Windows (also when rendering smallish scenes in V-Ray). It is as silent as my completely passively cooled PC in fact. And that way it stays even during older games like Trials Evolution. Only once the GPU spins its fans up it becomes audible.
And pretty much the same was true for its predecessor, a Phenom 2 X6 1055 with a Thermaltake Macho Rev A in a Fractal Design Define R3 and a Superflower Golden Silent PSU.

My friend is telling me to just go with i7 core rather than i5, but everyone here is getting i5s. So what are the differences. I read it doesn't really matter as much with VR the CPU. is an i5 6600k 3.5G ok.

This is for a friend and I'll help him build it. We spent some time putting this build together, but we wanted to reach a budget between 800-1000€ at max. Preferably something like 900€. I'm not really good in picking the actual parts. It's way easier to put them together.

Just in case, here is the form from the OP:

His Current Specs: No current specs.
Budget: Preferably arround 900€ in Germany. 1000€ only if it's really neccessary.
Main Use: Gaming and General Usage (Word, Web, 1080p playback). Maybe even streaming, if the budget/specs are allowing it.
Monitor Resolution: 1080p
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Counter Strike: Global Offensive and the goal is to achieve 1080p/60FPS in most of the games.
Looking to reuse any parts?: No reusable parts
When will he build?: Preferably within this month.
Will he be overclocking?: Yes.

We will go through other price comparing sites and find the cheapest prices for certain parts, since PartPicker is not really optimized for Gemany.

Help would be much appreciated.

I recommend geizhals.de as you're in Germany. This is the best that I can make it with the same processor and a GTX 970. I already cut out the SSD, you may want to consider dropping the optical drive as well if your friend may not use it that much.

Awesome about the price match, that could be a big changer! I was looking up some parts and they do appear to be cheaper on some other sites, so with that said I have a question. Another friend recommended this build a while back, but when I went to check NCIX they were more expensive so I didn't go with this build (before I knew about price matching). How's this look compared to what you did?

To make it easier to look at, I'll repost the build you created so it's in this one post:

As for that Xeon E3, I think it may be a winner since it's $30 cheaper on Amazon for that price match, so it'd only be $50 more for much more power, no?

That build that your friend came up with is okay, nothing particularly bad jumps out at me.

bwmpbftka6bzz4yqjtcb.png

whats your guys opinion on the Razer Blade Stealth ? And the Razer core add on ? is it good for the price, will it be good ?

It's going to be very expensive for the performance. I guess if money is no object and you don't mind lugging around the GPU enclosure then go ahead, but a desktop PC will offer better price to performance ratio.

Do most cases that accept 140mm case fans also accept 120mm fan ones?

Because I'm about to order Cryorig XF140's that screw into 120mm slots.

You'll have to take care with the physical allowances of the fan mount. there may be obstructions that prevent the installation of physically larger fans even if the fans you order have 120mm mounting holes.

My friend is telling me to just go with i7 core rather than i5, but everyone here is getting i5s. So what are the differences. I read it doesn't really matter as much with VR the CPU. is an i5 6600k 3.5G ok.

Depends on the game. Some can make use of up to 8 processing threads, other games won't benefit as much. For others, the cost of an i7 over an i5 processor is not worth it when the i5 already gives excellent performance.

Hi guys, can someone help me out on choosing a CPU cooler?

I'm upgrading my current system to a Skylake build, and I build around trying to make my rig quiet when it's running idle. I currently have an older Hyper 212 CPU cooler and was wondering if that is still a good cooler to go for. Are there any good coolers that are also quiet? Been looking at the Corsair water cooling stuff, but I believe the pumps make noticeable noise. I'll be looking to over clock a little bit (like up to 4.5Ghz or so).

Also, are there any PSUs that specialize in being quiet?

Noctua nh-u12 or -u14 for the cooler. Plenty of silent PSU options.

The water cooler is low end and somewhat noisy, I hope you get a decent power supply, and $1200 is pretty overpriced for a PC that only has an R9 380. Other than that if you're happy with it, it's okay.

Edit: Noticed that you seemed to have posted the wrong list of parts. Still, I did a price analysis and you could have gotten more or less the same PC for under $1000. If you prefer them to build it for you and have warranty support, that's your choice.

Thanks. Looking at Newegg, no explicit mention of LGA 1151 support - is it essentially understood that it supports the new socket?

The 212 is a great cooler, it'll be able to handle the overclocking. Noise-wise you could fit some newer quieter fans on it and that'll do the trick. Otherwise Noctua coolers are recommended for low noise. For low noise power supplies, there's the Corsair RM/RMx line or the EVGA GS/G2 models which have an eco fan mode for low noise.

All sockets of the LGA115x type have the same mounting holes. That means if it says 1156/1155/1150/1151, it'll fit any of them.

I watched a few CES videos of Corsair's cases. What the fuck happened? I loved their original cases and my first PC used the 600t. They've become everything I hate about modern cases with the windows and the flashy leds. Yuck. Thank god for Fractal Design.

So this is my first time trying to play games from my PC on my TV while going through my new receiver (Denon X1200W). Despite working perfectly on my monitor, the game framerate gets totally messed up when using my TV (actually the receiver) as the primary display. Any settings I need to change or will I have to go directly to the TV and optical audio out to the receiver or something?

The 400 model looks appealing, just not that long ago I was looking at my Define S and wondering why the case had to be so long when they could have gotten rid of the unused interior volume where drive cages would have been but don't exist in the Define S.

I really hate "gamer" shit on cases, mice, keyboards, etc.

I thought it was cool for like a week when I was 21, but then I quickly realised I don't want a Christmas tree in my room.

Yeah, I feel you. I have a razer naga and razer blackwidow ultimate keyboard. I have it because I wanted a mechanical keyboard and very few stores have any to test out at all and I wanted a mouse with the 12 extra keys for my WOW playing. I hate the fucking snake logo and the green color. Tacky shit.

Edit: At least, Razer gives you the option to turn the lighting off.

My Saitek Eclipse (and the rebranded Mad Catz Cyborg v5) keyboard had a backlight that you could dim and turn off. It's still the best keyboard I've ever used.

I don't know if this will help you at all and I don't know what the cause is... If I don't press ALT+ENTER (at any point) while in certain games, my framerates flactuate for no reason. By pressing ALT+ENTER twice, it will fix my problem and keep my frames stable. Try doing that. See if it works for you.

Thinking of picking up an SSD, how easy is it to migrate everything over?

I currently have everything on a 320GB hard drive and I would like to move Windows over to the SSD and use the HDD as storage for older games/less streaming intensive games. Would I basically have to reinstall Windows?

Thanks!

If you get a big enough SSD, you can just clone it. Set it as your boot drive in the bios and you are all set.

Wasn't there an issue with the way HDD's work causing cloning from HDD to SDD to give slower performance or issues rather than doing a clean install? Have they fixed that problem?

The early cloning software didn't correctly enable TRIMM and align for SSDs, but they have been fixed with later versions a long time ago.

I imagine that most SSDs come with cloning/replication software. But to be honest a fresh install is good every now and then.

If I were to buy an SSD to use as a system drive only (games and media storage will remain on a Hitachi 3GB), what size, brand and model should I be looking at? Would 120GB be enough?

If u are short on money yes it can work.U need more only if u need to install games and apps on it.Get a Samsung 850 Evo or Crucial MX200

New thread title should definitely include VR and pascal.

For the first time since Sandy Bridge first debuted, there will be an application for lower frametimes besides the ultra-high refresh Lightboost monitors.

In 2016, people will finally be upgrading from their 2500K's to get the lower frametimes necessary to drive the 90hz OLED panels in the Oculus Rift. The recommended CPU by Oculus VR for the Rift is an i5-4590. That's right, they want you on Haswell for VR. You will not be rocking your 2500K until HBM2 and beyond if you have a preorder in for the Rift and you're getting yours in March/April.

I have a Crucial MX100 128GB in my desktop as the system drive. It's more than enough space, but for futureproofing I'd recommend at least 256GB.

Intel, Crucial and Samsung are the most reputable SSD manufacturers.

120 gb are of course more then enough for Windows, Office, a few programs and even a game or two (really helps a lot with loading times).

When it comes to brands Intel and Samsung SSDs are the two fan favourites right now and rightfully so, both companies offer great performance, durability and overall good prices. That said Crucial, Kingston and the rest isn't far behind.

I'd recommend going for the 250gb Samsung 850 EVO for 85$ (just ~20$ more expansive than the 120gb version). It offers very good performance, 5 years of warranty and it's not expansive. Also the Samsung Data Migration tool makes cloning your old system drive wonderfully easy. No need to reinstall Windows.

So I finally got a newish PC. Picked up a Dell Precision T3500 Workstation for $340 shipped from DellRefurbished.com when they had the 45% off new years day sale. Pretty happy so far but, I'd like a few opinions on some upgrades mainly I'm looking for at least one hard drive replacement.

System came with:
  • Windows 7 Pro 64bit
  • 1xWestmere W3690 @ 3.46GHz 6-Core with Turbo @ 3.73GHz (Revision B1, Stepping 2)
  • 3x4GB or 12 GB DDR3 ECC 1333MHz (3 slots open for 12 more GB)
  • 1x Quadro 2000 which I replaced with the 4GB GTX760
  • 2xCaviar Blue 250GB HDD.
  • Fantastic Dell Precision Case
  • Mobo is a Dell Model# 09KPNV
  • Built in Ethernet but no Wifi (lol)
Came with a mouse and keyboard too but, I already have those and a nice monitor.
This system is replacing my existing one which has an old Phenom 965BE.

Already swapped out the PSU with my Antec 750, and the GPU with my 4GB GTX760 but, the hard drives in this thing are tiny. 2x250GB Caviar Blue so I'm looking to upgrade. I don't really care about spending a lot of money for a Solid State so I was thinking of leaving one of the 250GB for a boot drive and then putting in another Caviar Blue 1TB like THIS ONE.
I'm also considering slapping another 12GB of ram in it to enlarge my e-penis and for 3D work that I do, but I'd really like to get all matching ram sticks for peace of mind?
Or does it matter?
Samsung Prt # is M391B5273CHO-YH9 (PC3-10700)

Haven't done any real benches or testing since I just got this thing up an running today.

TLDR: I want a quietish drive with decent storage and good performance that works well with the Dell Mobo. Thinking of upgrading the ram since I do 3D work.

You cant really get much cheaper...Check geizhals.eu for prices.U can also change the PSU to EVGA 650W G2 or Corsair RM650x if it is the same price...If you want cheaper we have to use non overclockable cpu and motherboard.

I recommend geizhals.de as you're in Germany. This is the best that I can make it with the same processor and a GTX 970. I already cut out the SSD, you may want to consider dropping the optical drive as well if your friend may not use it that much.

Yeah, we planned on using Geizhals and stuff like Idealo. They are the best price comparing sites here, hands down. Thanks to both of you, because we tweaked the build again and now we are at 974€ (without shipping) and the price will pretty much be arround that value, due to buying several parts by the same vendor and discounts/deals. Here is the updated build:

-Removed the Optical Drive for now. He needs one, but can purchase it later on. Maybe someone has one laying arround somewhere. :p
-Went down to 8GB RAM total, since that is easily upgradeable.
-Picked an other PSU that seems sufficient.
-Switched out the GPU for a GTX970 mini. Basically the same performance right?
-Added a Case from the OP.

Final thoughts? Otherwise, I will send him the list this evening (in about 7-8 hours) and he will start ordering soon.
