I rather not tell you the stuff that happened to me while building a new system...
I think it's time to start upgrading the i5 2500s out there. Especially if you are using a 'powerfull, high end gpu' or you're thinking about getting one down the road.
Still if you aren't in a hurry kaby lake and zen is coming out at the end of 2016... but you can also go for skylake if you like to get something now.
The good old i5 vs i7 question is a bit more difficult to answer then let's say 3 years ago. Currently the i7 doesn't offer a huge boost in perfromance, especially if you oc the i5. Still going for a 4 core cpu with at least the ability to handle 8 threads might be worth it as multi threading should get more important in the future. When you bought your 2500 most games didn't even use 4 threads and having 2 cores + hyperthreading was enough, 4 real core were future proof and the i7 wasn't needed at all (for gaming). Today some games even refuse to start with just 2 cores and the ability to handle 4 threads is the bare minimum.
Digital foundry made an interesting video about the 6600k vs 6700k. Definetly worth watching it in you position.
Slightly counter intuitive, have you already got the ATX mobo?

So... I got a great deal on a 390x , £142 for a damaged box from Amazon... The only caveat is I have a 600w Corsair Bronze PSU,will I be able to run it? Here's my build on pc part picker which says I should be fine:

Yes you should upgrade your whole system.
What I meant was, is there an imminent hardware upgrade cycle that I should wait for? For example, just doing some cursory checks showed that maybe I should wait for the 1070 cards to hit before building a new PC.
I wish some of these higher end guys would do Slim ATX or slim Micro ATX. Only thing to choose from is LIAN LI.

That's pretty small already for a full ATX board isn't it? I have the NZXT S340 which is a small mid without 5.25" bays at 200mm x 445mm x 432mm (~ 17.5" x 7" x 17").

CPu wise? Not really.
Broadwell-E should be available soon(ish) starting with the 6800k. A high end Intel CPU with 6cores and HTT. A premium model, for a premium price.
Kabylake and Zen will be available at the end of 2016 (maybe around fall...).
Kabylake is the successor to skylake and will offer (according to rumors) a 5% improved performance over skylake, a better integrated gpu (who cares), add native HDCP 2.2 support and native usb 3.1 support (current z170 boards use a thrid party addon chip for usb 3.1).
Zen is different. It looks good on paper, but I'm a bit more pessimistic about it than most people. According to newest AMD PR talk they don't see themselves as being able to become the new number one when it comes to performance.

That's nice stuff, but seems most of the work is custom. The do have an ITX system, but I'm looking for a Micro ATX or ATX for SLI. like the PC-O7s/O6s. I might send them an e-mail to see how much they charge.

Yay, pretty happy with how it turned out.
Will paint the RAM tomorrow so it matches the two golden highlights on the board.
And I will also paint the GPU once it gets here.
Definitely will replace all the cables.
Stock cables are nightmare to work with as I just found out..

After a frustrating three hours of fiddling with my PC, I have FINALLY gotten my Hyper 212 Evo installed correctly.
Idle temp right now is averaging 15C. Anyone here have some advice on OCing an FX6300? If my load temperatures look right I'm definitely going for it.

THIS is why I'm never buying AMD again. The reason it took me three hours was, apart from the fact that I was fiddling with an otherwise completely built PC, was because the AM3+ Socket is so goddamn small, with very little clearance to work with even if I was installing this to a bare mobo.

The first attempt I got it on almost right... But not quite. Thing sounded like a jet engine and my idle temperature was 70C.
So my 270x died and I need a replacement. I have an i5 4460, whats a good mid range GPU to pair with this? Considering the 1070 but it seems like it's going to be a while till the non founders ones are on sale and I kinda need one now so I can play doom. Only need enough for 1080p.

Depending on your definition of mid-range, either a 750ti or a 970.
I've got a spare 750ti if you're looking to buy used.
You might snag some good deal on a 970 in the following weeks. I feel a ton of people are upgrading to the 1080 from their 970.

The top fan, the one that came pre-installed, is ridiculously loud - I think it´s defective.
Something I can do about it or do i have to send it back?

Oh but I think you can... you bought the i7 6700k right?
It has an integrated GPU and your mainboard should have a hdmi port (or something similar). Theoretically you can plug in a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard and start installing windows 10, set everything up and install all the other programs and tools you want. Actually testing if it at least posts is not a bad idea at all.
And than, before switching to the 1080 you just have to deactivate the igpu (in your bios/uefi), plug in the 1080, install the latest nvidia drivers and you should be good to go. Theoretically at least, never tried it myself tbh.
Maybe even just installing the 1080 is enough and you don't have to change uefi settings at all (of course in both cases you'd still need to connect your display directly to the 1080, obviously).
edit: and beaten. lol
edit 2: It means, pls connect a mouse and a keyboard and press f1 to enter your uefi setup.
edit 3: also check your cpu fan. something is wrong. (and beaten again... I'm out for tonight).
Really tough luck. Terrible situation you're in because it's not the right time to buy a 970 or 390 right now. Waiting for the 1070 is the best thing you can do...

I see it complain about the CPU Fan, did you plug it in the correct slot? It should say CPU_FAN or sth like that.

I did. It´s one of those stock liquid cooling systems from NZXT. Maybe there is an extra step to get it to work?
The manual does not say a thing.
Its a 6700k or skylake build? You can test with the onboard GPU.

Its looking for the RPM sense cable on the 4 pin fan header. Usually the pump will have a cable which connects to this header to report the rpm. If you dont have one, just turn the notification off in BIOS (ignore CPU fan rpm).

I think the CPU fan connector only provides power and the fan is controlled via USB and this NZXT CAM software.
Of course I have no idea what I´m talking about.
Exactly which cooler is this?
I remember my H80i had this:
USB for control/LEDs
4 pin connector to CPU fan header for pump RPM
SATA power for 12v power to the pump

Hello Azobza,
Let me shed some light onto this for you.
Asus motherboards, limit the wattage that comes from the CPU_FAN and OPT header. From what I've read it can vary from 2-3w sometimes less depending on the motherboard. The Kraken uses 3.3w from the 3pin header to make the pump run like its supposed to. ASUS motherboards are the only ones that have this issue.
My advise, Move the 3pin header to a CHA_FAN or SYS_FAN header and disable that error in bios. That will get rid of that error and allow the Kraken to run as it should. Also, Make sure that your USB header is plugged into your motherboard too.
My question - what will control the fan speed if I do that?
Interesting. As far as i knew, fan headers should put out 1A@12v, for 12W maximum. 3.3W is 0.33A, seems quite low.
You could plug it into another header as suggested though.
Use the software to then determine if the pump is running at the right speed. You can also try to connect it to the CPU fan header and see what the software reports, and prove/debunk that response.
Just make sure you connected it to the primary CPU fan header, as some have 2 headers next to each other these days.

My board does not have an OPT port.
I can just disable it - I checkt - it works.
My CPU temp is idling at 27 celsius in the BIOS, so I guess it works (?)

CPU_FAN is primary, that is where the board is looking for an RPM value. It must be plugged in here.
My board does not have an OPT port.

Once you get into windows you can read the rpm of the pump with the software to definitively tell if its working properly.
27c is more than safe to proceed with installing windows either way.
