So, I have a FX-4100 and a 7850, and I'm planning to do a mild upgrade(new CPU and GPU) once polaris is out, and I was wondering which CPU you would recommend replacing my FX-4100 with.

It has to be AM3+ compatible, as I am not doing a major upgrade this time around(student, limited funds etc.) Is it wise to go for the FX-6300 series, or should I just go all the way for a FX-9300 class CPU?

EDIT: Missed the last bit, FX8350 is more or less the best bang for the buck while giving more performance over the 6300. Really depends on your budget. Avoid the 9000 series.

If possible, it's best to wait for Zen CPUs though cause AM3+ is super outdated.

I bet. How do you like that heat sink? I'm considering one if I go for the Case Labs BH4

I really like it, it keeps the CPU cool even under full load. I don't OC, so to me it's perfect for noise level and still keeping things chilly. It comes with a 120mm fan you can add on top of it, but that was overkill for my situation.

switched my mini-itx system to a new case, Fractal Design Nano S. I love this case, it's ultra quiet yet still has room for an insane amount of air cooling.

Also, tfw your heatsink is the size of your motherboard B)

Needs to be smaller, look at all that empty space on the right hand side ;)

:p

I came from a cooler master 130, so that was as small as I ever want to go. I had like 1mm space between heatsink and the PSU. I feel like I hit the sweet spot between having full sized hardware, ample cooling and still somewhat small form factor.

edit: btw I hate gpu sag, ugh

Thanks. I see that my local dealer has the FX-8350 Black Edition with the Wraith cooler in stock. I think I'll go for that, as I've heard it's a decent cooler.

Pull those PCIE cables through more to the rear and then zip tie them to raise that side of the GPU.

GTX 750 Ti/GTX 950/GTX 960 can often be had for cheap.

With a quick search, I found a Zotac 2GB 960 for a good price, especially if you're a new Jet customer, you can use a 15% off coupon to make it even cheaper.

https://jet.com/product/GTX-960-AMP...DCP-THREE-DP/fa14b217f2ea45e0b1b032a8471984a5

Is it worth even putting a GTX 960 in a Q9550? Wouldn't it be CPU limited? (She's using a 2560x1440 display)

FYI: I am trying to sell a pretty much brand new Antec HCP-1300 Platinum 1300w PSU in the F/S/T thread. If anyone has a spare GTX 960 (or equivalent/better card) they want to trade for it I'm up for it.

I'm just throwing that out there. You can still get a 750 Ti or a 950 for slightly cheaper if you prefer. Just in terms of the price to performance, that's a good price for the 960 right there.

Are any SSD price drops on the horizon? I'd really love to replace my two HDDs since in my situation I'd benefit from a) better cable management, b) less noise, c) better airflow but 1TB+ are just so expensive for storage :(

LilJoka

That empty space is perfect to mount an ssd.

SSDs can be mounted anywhere, in a case like this, you would want to mount them behind the board in the cable management area.
The only reason for the length is to fit the GPU really. You cant get much smaller unless you go cube type case like the Node 304.

4TB SSDs are about hit for consumers. You'll see a price drop. Actually, prices are already dropping dramatically.

500GB 850 Evo are down to $150.00. Other 500GB SSDs are about $120-130.

960GB-1TB used to be about $800-850 bucks back in 2012

Now You can get 1TB for about 220. Maybe even cheaper. 960GB cost as low as $180.

1TB 3 months ago was around 300-350. 2TB is still over priced. But that should plummet as well when SAMSUNG decides to make the 4TB 850 Evo widely available.

If you can wait a month or two, prices will be even cheaper.

The $0.50/GB is the sweet spot for a lot. I think we've reached the point that SSD can be sole drives for desktop builds.

Yeah. There are 500GB SSDs that hit $0.24/GB. Some cheaply made SSDs are about $0.21 @ 480GB My new build won't have a disk drive or HDD.

Yeah, I got my 850 Evo 500gb for ~140€ a month ago. 1TB Evo is starting at ~270ish, cheapest 1TB from Mushkin is 220. 2TB is 500+ lol

I'll wait and see, I'm in no hurry. Just wanted to know if there is anything upcoming that could positively affect the pricing.

E: Dayum, 1,3k for the 4TB Evo haha

I've been meaning to ask this for a while but always forget: is there any way to get 5.1 sorround sound from my PC via optical cable? I could not get it working on my old Mobo, but I just did a refresh and I'm facing the same issue.

I've been googling a while and it seems it can be done but the options are always greyed out on my setup. The motherboard in question:

MSI Enthuastic Gaming Intel Z170A

Only if the onboard chip (usually Realtek) support DD Live. There are some hacked drivers that add support in if not. The 5.1 PCM signal needs to be encoded to Dolby Digital (or DTS) to keep within the bandwidth limitations of Toslink.

Yeah, I tried to install The hacked drivers once but windows defender went crazy on them and I didn't risk it.

I guess I'll just buy some adaptor...

Thank you!

Is the i7 3770k the best LGA 1155 CPU? Any idea where to get one? :p

For the price of what you will need to pay for a 3770k, you might as well get a new mobo and a 6700k or wait for 7700k. Itll jus cost a little more.

And you will have to get it used.

Not sure why Windows defender would go crazy but you may have had a prompt that the driver is unsigned which would be expected.
You can buy any sound card that lists DD Live as a feature and has optical as an output otherwise.

DDR4 + 6700k + Z170 board costs similar to a used 3770k?

Is there a time frame of when the 7700k will come out?

Next year Q1/Q2 probably.
Intel have switched to a 3 step "tick tock" model so expect even less performance improvement than normal.

3770k goes for £160 on eBay so that would be my advice, see how the 2nd hand market looks first.

Depending what GPU you have, I doubt you'll have much issue with an overclocked 2600k tbh.

I currently have a 2500k @ 4.5ghz and I want to upgrade to a 1080 or maybe even a 1080ti when those come out.

Considering that, I would buy the 1080 and wait till you have enough money to upgrade to a 6700k system. 3770k should be enough but no idea till somebody tests it with a 1080.

same boat for me, I'm using a 256GB SSD for my steam drive and it's brutal managing the games (and I don't want to download them again). I'm holding out for a nice deal on a 1TB Samsung EVO.

Isn't the "Gaming Pro" tagline and MSI swag dragon enough to answer your question? ;)

Haha yeah I guess, but I can't find any new x99 mobos that dont have an obnoxious shield around the dann ports.

Im trying to stick the mobo and a h110i in the same case, in thinking these massive bastatds might interfere.

I just finished my pc and its the first one I've had since 2005. So far I downloaded 7zip, fraps, and vlc, any other recommendations for useful programs? ( I already have steam and firefox lol)

Alright so I clicked everything in and the ssd is not recognized and now my processor is kicking at max ghz constantly... Back to the drawing board I guess.

Anyone got suggestions for me?

Asus pro z87 already have an Hdd and another ssd installed.

I am trying to install an additonal ssd (sansdisk). I installed first attempt on the same sata chain and clicked it into where I think it would go on the mobo.

It didn't even recognize in windows explorer, and now my processor i7 4770k, is running at 4300 almost constantly which is weird to me.

Anyone have an idea of where to start OCing your ram? I've got 4x4Gb sticks of Gskill ddr3 1600. want to bump it up to 2133, but not sure where to start.

Lovely build - is the cpu passively cooled ?

thanks!

If you look closely, you can see the ugly brown Noctua fan underneath the heatsink (it blows up). I've cleaned up the cables since this picture and I think I'm going to add another 120mm fan to the bottom there (removed the pump bracket) for extra gpu cooling.

MSI motherboards are a thing of beauty, I recently got one and I'm very happy, it does not only good looking but materials and performance are incredible.

Yeah I'm looking to buy a new motherboard for a nice upgrade session and I was only looking at gigbyte since I've used that before but man now that I looked at Msi they have a lot of black/white and black/grey I like those combos of colors

I figure this is probably the best place to ask since there isn't a "I need a new mouse!" thread. I'm looking for suggestions for a wireless mouse that has 1 or 2 relatively large buttons around the thumb area. Specifically I'm after one which is curved and comfortable like my current el cheapo one. I normally always play PC games on controller, but the lack of deadzone settings on Overwatch is getting annoying so I'm trying to use controller in left hand for movement and mouse for aiming, but I need easy to press buttons on the mouse to map jump and melee to. My max budget is probably about £70.

Quick question. So I am currently using a ASUS Z170I motherboard, and for whatever reason, I want to go to a ATX size instead of a mini ITX. If I bought a ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming mobo, would I be able to swap everything easily, or would I just have to wipe everything and start over?

dumb question but yeah :<

Is it recognized in BIOS?
