Is it recognized in BIOS?

I am at family's now, I will check when I get in, if it was what should next steps be? I am guessing it is not, I just checked the recommended ssds for my Asus board, after the fact of course, and sansdisk is not listed.

The really odd thing is now on idle my PC is pegged at 4.3 ghz, normal it is 800, I don't think I clicked anything on the mobo while fiddling, especially not the Evo cooler on my CpU so I am a bit confused.

I also appreciate the help, even though I might sound completely dense, I truly am grateful for the response. Thank you.

Sheesh I love microcenter. If anyone is in NJ, the one in Paterson is running 25% off all open box.

I got a Samsung EVO 500gb ssd for $90 (normally $160) and a Gigabyte z170 gaming GT for $103 (on newegg for $230).

I was going to get the z170 gaming 7 with a 6700k, but the GT was actually cheaper lol. Both were practically new still in the box. Don't even look like they were touched.

No problem, that's what this thread is for.

If it's not recognized in the BIOS I would plug in the power/data cable of your working SSD/HDD and see if it's recognized then. That way you know if the SSD itself is the problem or something else.

I might be considering selling my 970 and picking up a new 10xx series card in a few months. I haven't followed them too much other than knowing they're improvements on the 980Ti. Recommendation? I'm running a 1080p IPS right now, and love max settings with 60fps to boot, as any PC savant does.

Edit: Also, what's the general recommendation on when to replace what?
I've heard various on the GPU front, I keep seeing 4 years for CPU/mobo, and 5 for PSU. Accurate?

SSDs can be mounted anywhere, in a case like this, you would want to mount them behind the board in the cable management area.
The only reason for the length is to fit the GPU really. You cant get much smaller unless you go cube type case like the Node 304.

No shit, Sherlock. I'm saying that mounting an ssd in that empty space would make a more aesthetically pleasing build.

If you're planning on sticking with 1080p/60 for a while, then the 1070 will probably be the wiser choice. 1080 will be more powerful, but it will probably be overkill for the majority of games unless you're going for higher frame rates and/or higher resolutions.

Eh, even with a 1080p monitor you can always downsample, if you can afford the 1080 I don't see why you wouldn't go for it.

Would buying a "Certified Refurbished" HDD from Amazon be too risky?

It has the usual "tested for problems, inspection, etc" for refurbished items and has a 1 year warranty and what seems like a good return/refund policy from the reseller

switched my mini-itx system to a new case, Fractal Design Nano S. I love this case, it's ultra quiet yet still has room for an insane amount of air cooling.

Also, tfw your heatsink is the size of your motherboard B)

Damn the Define Nano S looks really nice. Almost debating getting one as I feel the Node 304 (my current case) is maybe just a tad too cramped on the space for my liking.

OK, I think I've finalized the new parts for my PC. I realized that my aftermarket cooler fits socket LGA 1150 instead of 1151, so I had to do a little re-organizing, PCPartpicker gave me this (Just upgrading motherboard, CPU and RAM):

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($297.45 @ Vuugo)
Motherboard: MSI MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($108.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2400 Memory ($55.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Total: $462.41
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-05-28 23:02 EDT-0400

This is also in CAD and the best I get could get for less than $500. Any other recommendations or can I sound off on this? Thanks for any assistance.

Quick question. So I am currently using a ASUS Z170I motherboard, and for whatever reason, I want to go to a ATX size instead of a mini ITX. If I bought a ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming mobo, would I be able to swap everything easily, or would I just have to wipe everything and start over?

dumb question but yeah :<
If you're on Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 you should be okay swapping out the motherboard without re-installing. You may need to re-activate your Windows license.

I'm pretty sure coolers will fit both 1150 and 1151. No point in going for Z97 instead of Skylake now. What cooler is it?

I dunno if this belongs here but I need some help upgrading my computer. I bought one pre-built and I have no idea how to get new stuff for it. This is the info I have and I'm not sure if it's enough for you guys.

I was struggling to play overwatch on the highest settings and can't run battleborn literally at all. I don't really need anything crazy but it'd be nice to run some stuff on high settings again.

Started playing around with doing a Broadwell-E build, and here's what I came up with:

Shooting for the 6850k to finish the build. I already have the OS, OD, GPU, and HDDs needed from my current build.

Thoughts, PC gaf?

Anyone have any recs? Broadwell e is supposed to come out monday (wtf intel), so any input at all would be awesome!

Your i7 4820K is completely fine and doesn't need an upgrade yet. I would overclock it though if you have an aftermarket cooler. (there are lots of tutorials around on how to do it safely)

What you need is a graphics card. You could get a GTX 1070 which currently is the best choice if you are willing to spend around 400$. (probably a bit more for non reference ones) but you will have to wait a month for those to come out. Its TDP is 150W (as opposed to 110W for your current GPU) and that 450W PSU might be a problem especially if you are going to overclock the CPU also, so consider upgrading to a 550W/600W PSU.

If you don't want to spend that kind of money on the GPU, wait a few months for Polaris/GTX 1060/1050 cause this is a bad time to buy any mainstream cards. Also you might want to get another 8 GB of RAM which will definitely help in some games, it's cheap enough so no reason not to.

Looks good to me, but I would wait at least for Polaris if I were to buy a new <200$ GPU right now. It will most probably have better value than that 380. (we should get more info soon enough) If you can't wait go ahead and get the 380, it's not a bad choice.

I'd try to go a little higher on the GPU if you want it to last through the console generation (however long that is, with the midgen upgrade shenanigans). Polaris might be a good option depending on how that turns out.

But for what it's worth, my brother's hella budget PC from a couple years ago with a AMD 6300 and 6850 manages roughly XBO+ performance. He's been playing Dark Souls 3 on highish (not sure exactly) settings and getting >30FPS.

Buying a new computer as soon as the 1070 is available. Was thinking of bringing over my Evo 212 to the new computer which will have a 6700k processor. The homepage says they are compatible.

But just to be sure, are they compatible even if the fan is three years old? They didn't update it to be compatible later?

First 1070 review is out, 2 days before embargo ends!

Here we go, first benchmarks are out and it looks this will be great card for $380 when FE bullshit passes from storeshelves.

According to WCCFTech, some non-FE cards should be released alongside the FE cards on the 10th.

Along with the pictures, we also have information that NVIDIA will officially lift the NDA on the GeForce GTX 1080 on 30th May. While reviews will be available for users to read the same day, the graphics card will officially hit the retail shelves on 10th June in both reference and non-reference flavors.

It's compatible. Nothing has changed for many years on socket size.

Tried that. Still had a ton of issues and eventually it was telling me failed updates and rolled them back.

I upgraded to Windows 10, for now, I guess. I have a physical 7 disc, so no harm in doing 10 for now with the possibility of just throwing 7 onto an SSD and trying again in the future.

Right now everything works fine except some weird bug where Windows 10 boots up slowly if a restart is performed. Cold boot and sleep work fine.

All in all, long day. It took me longer to do Windows crap than it did to build the damn thing.

GAF I'm looking to upgrade my PC. Basically I'm going for a whole new built, the only things I plan to keep from my current machine are the case/PSU and HDDs.

If I don't plan on overclocking is there any reason to buy a top end motherboard/RAM combo? 6 years ago I went with a i5 2500k and a motherboard/ram combo that was meant to be suited to overclocking and I never actually overclocked once.... Thinking on it now I'd rather save the $200-300 and just get parts that will perform excellent at stock speeds.

What would be a good CPU/RAM/Motherboard setup to compliment the GTX 1080?

Any particular reason why you're not overclocking? It's essentially better speeds for the same money for a bit of work. Doesn't necessarily mean that you need a top end motherboard though.

Swapping motherboards and CPU, so I assume I'll need a new Windows install? Is here anything to do to make that simpler? It's Windows 10 so will there be any issues with a new MB and the Windows license?

Will it even boot up on the old installation or will I need a USB stick with an installer on?

I swapped out my mobo and all I had to do was put in a new w10 key.

I have a 6700k, 16gb ram and a 980ti. My next upgrade path will be 1080ti part and an M2 drive.

I'm running on a 850 evo at the moment, would you all agree that is about the mist I can do at the moment?

W10 handles a change of Mobo pretty well so try boot without any changes first.
You may need a new license, depends how many "strikes" w10 puts against you for the new hardware.

So guys, is there any huge con to going with mATX over ATX for my first build? I know mATX offers less ports and stuff.

I was hoping someone could give me a hand. I just build a new PC and for some reason numerous steam games refuse to play.

I'll double click them and they just fail to launch. No error message.

I went through everything I could find online, reinstalling direct x etc.

When I click on the games that won't launch they throw out missing .dll warnings as the reason they refuse to launch.

I have tried replacing these .dll files and the game still won't launch.

The games giving me a hard time with this are

Far Cry 4
Rocket League
The Lego Movie- Videogame
Spec OPs the Line

Surprisingly games like Doom, Alien Isolation and watch dogs run fine...

The .dll errors I'm seeing are all various depending on the game.

Spec Ops says D3Dcompiler_42.dll is the problem..
Lego Game says XAPOFX1_5.dll is the problem..

There seems to be no rhyme and reason to it.

I went so far as to remove my entire steam install last night but I keep receiving the same issues after a new installation.

My system is a Gigabyte 170 Gaming 7 MB
6700K processor
16GB Ram
980ti card
500GB M.2 drive
2TB drive(where steam install resides)

I'm really at a lose and any help anyone could provide would be awesome.

No problem, that's what this thread is for.

If it's not recognized in the BIOS I would plug in the power/data cable of your working SSD/HDD and see if it's recognized then. That way you know if the SSD itself is the problem or something else.

Got it up and kicking now! I know enough to be a pain in the arse to all of you on this thread. It was getting through in bios so I checked in device manager and it registered who knows...

I formatted and it is live, installing and testing it now, best part is that my cpu temps have normalized, it was very odd, but until I had the drive mounted my cpu was staying pegged at the highest turbo clock of 4.3 ghz instead of the normal 800 mhz, that was concerning me most that I jacked something else up.

Thanks again!

I dont mind spending that for the graphics card. So, assuming I have this right, I need to upgrde my power supply to handle the graphics card so if I were to buy a cx600 that would be good?
And if I buy and install it now will it cause any issues with what I already have?
