Hey friends. My buddy seems to finally be ready to jump into PC gaming once again after his old AMD system failed on him a few years ago. Here are his answers to questions...

Your Current Specs: None
Budget: $1200 for everything (including OS, monitor, kb+mouse etc)
Main Use: Gaming is the big one. Will also be used for typical web stuff like anybody else, but he also mentioned wanting to be able to play around in Unreal 4.
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: He wants 60fps at max settings, and the ability to use Unreal 4.
When will you build?: No real deadline.
Will you be overclocking?: Maybe. He said don't worry about it now, he can always buy the stuff later... So I put it in now.

Here's what I've come up with so far.

CPU will last more than a while, he likes the idea of a microATX build that can fit on his desk so I went with that. I wanted to go with the Air 240 for the case because he likes white, but the 212 EVO doesn't fit and I didn't know where to go from there. If anyone has any suggestions around that though, it'd be much appreciated. GPU can push current games to or right under 60fps, and it has the monitor and OS included. The only thing not listed there are keyboard and mouse since he can choose those himself with 70 bucks. Also, any extra fans if necessary.

Any suggestions or help are much appreciated!

I'd look into getting DDR4-3000 Ram, this one is the same price as what you had listed

And as for the GPU, the EVGA GTX 1060 SC is only $10 more (there was a $10 rebate on Newegg recently, so it ends up as the same price as the non-SC version) and has a better cooling system. I have this card and the listed monitor, and everything looks and runs great.

Just switched them both over. The only issue I could see coming up is that the superclocked card is out of stock everywhere. I'm not exactly sure how soon he would plan on getting everything, but I switched to that one anyway because of your reasons. Thanks!

Hey guys, here is my PC.

I can't live with a 500GB HDD anymore. Games are getting so huge nowadays that I'm getting tired of constantly freeing up space to install new titles.

Is it pretty simple to install a new HDD? How about moving all my Steam games over to the new one? Would I need to do that or would I simply need to point all new Steam download to the new drive's directory? Thanks!

Based on my specs above, what would be the best install-and-forget-about drive for me? Another WD 1TB perhaps?

EDIT: Actually, I'm wondering if it might be better to just go with a Samsung 850 EVO, 250GB SSD. It it easy to transfer the OS from my HDD to the new SSD? How about my Steam games? Easy to move one game back and forth between drives? I'm pretty new to this stuff, so pardon my ignorance.

You need to use the permalink given at the top left, that link defaults to everyone's own parts list

I believe theres a tool that you can use to move steam libraries across hard drives, though I've never used it myself. Installing a new drive is easy, as long as you have the room in your case for it :p

Okay, fixed. Check out the build!

Anyway, decided to go with the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD. I just wanna know if it'll be tough to move my OS and programs to it? How about my Steam games? Can I move Steam games back and forth between my drives depending on what I'm playing atm?

Just keep an eye on http://www.nowinstock.net/computers/videocards/nvidia/gtx1060/ and sign up for alerts. I was able to get the 1060 SC in the second week of release thanks to that site.

So, I am considering pulling the trigger on that i7-6700k.

I have been looking into motherboards and I think that I will opt for the Asus Z170-A

For memory I will be getting: G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 3466 PC4-27700 16GB 2x8GB CL16

Would that be an OK combination? There are always so many MBs out there that I never really know if I am picking the most suitable one.

Just be aware you might need to manually tweak the ram settings and vccio vccsa voltages, I even had to do that with the TridentZ 3200 ram, system is basically identical to your list too. Any ddr4 over 2133mhz is considered overclocked and YMMV depending on the motherboard etc.

I had to NOT pick the XMP Profile, manually set the speed to ddr3200 and manually set the vccio from 0.950 to 1.1 and the vccsa from 1.05 to 1.2v to get it to post and run stable (zero errors after a full 2.5hr run on memtest86 uefi mode)

edit: if you can fit it in your case, don't bother with the Coolermaster 212 evo, I returned the pile of crap because it was not doing much of anything and the section that touches the cpu lid looked like someone sanded it with 100 grit paper. I spent the extra for a Noctua NH-D15, the thing just oozes quality, it's mount is so much better designed and it also cooled my cpu 15! Degrees cooler than the Evo! I ran the new prime95 and maxed at 75c vs 90+ with the Coolermaster.

Hey, so I'm looking to build a new PC from scratch, pretty much only for gaming. I'm looking to spend around $1k, not counting peripherals and such, just main components. The monitor I currently have is 1920x1080, and I'd like to be able to game comfortably on it for a few years. Right now, my main reason is to play Overwatch, but I'd like it to run battlefield one and games in the near future at at least 60 fps, even if it takes a little overclocking. I'd also like a smaller form factor, like a micro atx system.

Since I haven't built a PC in quite a few years, I've been looking at this build. Is there anything you guys would recommend switching out, or have a better build to recommend? I think I'm set on getting an i5 6500 or 6600 with a 1070 gtx

Anyone recommend a modest upgrade from a R9 290? I'm getting way too many random BSOD when video is playing or when I load up a game. I've tried different video drivers, uninstalling f.lux, disabling the internal Intel GPU, etc. Nothing seems to help.

Honestly I'm pretty happy with the performance of my rig overall, just really sick of the BSODs and might as well do a modest GPU upgrade while I get rid of the R9.

I need some major help with my PC. It won't start into windows 10 normally right now and I think something happened to the graphics card. I am seeing pink lines on the UEFI BIOS and I'm connected by HDMI through the graphics card

I don't remember how to use the graphics onto CPU and bypass the graphics card, if I plug display adapters into the motherboard nothing comes up

Earlier when I was playing a game the screen just went gray and I had to turn the computer off and now I'm here

I was able to get to windows safe mode 1 time and it came up but I can't get back to it I can't figure out how to boot into it.

I see the windows 10 logo with the swirling dots then the screen goes black.

Shit, dealing with an annoying DVD drive problem.

I've got Windows 10 and the ASUS DRW-24B1ST disc drive, and I suddenly began experiencing an issue where it wouldn't read any DVDs. I checked both BIOS and Device Manager and the drive isn't listed in either one. The tray still opens and closes when I press the button on my computer, and a light comes up signaling that something is on, but it's nowhere to be found on my computer. What the heck happened?

Thanks for the heads up, I'll do exactly that.

Does anyone have any recommendations for microATX cases or heatsinks to go with a Air 240? Want to keep the heatsink cheap since we're looking at a 212 EVO, but I like the Air 240 quite a bit and am curious about what would work well with it. Otherwise, I'd love to hear about other microATX cases!

I have that build except for the CPU (I got a 6600k) and I'm pretty satisfied with it. The case has enough space for good air ventilation and its pretty silent too. The challenges I experienced while building were putting the PSU inside the case and plugging the fan cables on the motherboard. For the PSU, I had to remove one of the 3.5" HDD brackets first. Cables are pretty much bent but its okay (I think). For the fan cables, I had to remove the top cover of the case to have access to the plugs on the top section of the board. But once everything is set, its all good. Also, the ASUS Strix 1070 is pretty long (330mm), so you have to remove the HDD bracket (the one with the Phanteks name on it). You might notice some sagging, I'm actually thinking of putting rubber in the gap just to align it properly.

Edit: This is what it might look like

Uhhh, I don't know why the earlier link you posted was different. Anyway, disregard this post if its no longer relevant.

You should be able to select onboard or discrete video inside the bios. If you can't get into the bios, try removing your video card. Then, the MB hopefully auto selects onboard video.

If the device does not show up in the bios, it won't appear in Windows. Try using a different sata cable and/or different sata port. if it still doesn't show up, probably a bad drive.

ugh looks like the graphics card just ate it maybe. i'll try updating the driver and see if that does anything :p

using integrated graphics now and the computer is working

is there anything i can do with an old graphics card that may or may not work?

it wouldnt let me get to the advanced settings to choose that option for whatever reason. i took the video card out and now its booting into windows 10

is there anything to do with this graphics card other than try to put it back in and see if it works?

I asked a variation of this before but didn't get any answers.

Is a Haswell i3 sufficient for 1080p/60FPS on medium settings in stuff like Minecraft, the LEGO games, and some older (360-era) AAA titles? Maybe Overwatch? What about some strategy games like Halo Wars? I know they are more CPU-bound. Is the stock cooler sufficient if we don't overclock?

And will an RX 460 or 470 be bottlenecked by it? Is the 4GB version of the 460 worth it over the 2GB, or is it not fast enough to make use of it?

In Deus Ex Human Revolution I'm getting a black screen when I switch to 2160p. I'm trying to downsample on a 1080p TV through custom resolution. 1440p works.

Edit: If I switch the game's aspect ration from "auto" to 16:9 I get an image briefly before it goes to a black screen.

Cool, thanks! I ended up going with the 3333 dimms due to availability but I gues the same thing applies.

Also, I guess your edit was for another poster?

I have the U2515H paired with a 980Ti.The resolution is sooo much better than 1080p that if u sacrifice some AA or stuff you can maintain high FPS and have a more beautiful game than at 1080p.For me try to sell the old monitor and go for the U2515H.
Beware though with buying a VESA dp cable because Dell is quite picky with connections

i just bought a U2515H and it's arriving tomorrow. i am going to keep my 1080p monitor to use as a second screen. i was going to skip the next generation of cards (GTX 1100/AMD 500) but if my 1070 starts struggling i'll just pick one up when they come out.

Yeah lol my edit was for someone else, I lost the quote though >_<

The same might apply for the 3333mhz, try the xmp profile first, if it fails to post or reverts back to 2133mhz just put it back to auto, then set the speed to ddr3333 and slowly bump the vccio up and the vccsa, once you hit the sweet spot it will boot no problem and run stable.

Vccio usually only needs a slight bump but vccsa might need a bigger one, both should stay at or below 1.25v ideally since 1.3 is usually the recorded limit for it to be safe on the cpu.

Getting those voltages stable was the most frustrating part of my recent build, once that was set it was smooth sailing lol

Oh and during the process you might have to reset the cmos if you get post failures, it just means the ram sorta booted but not enough to continue so reset the bios and tweak again.

Hopefully all goes well out of the box though you never know haha

I still have no clue as to what Z170 motherboard to get. The 3/5 reviews scare me off for some of them. Anything for about $150 or less would be nice.

i have the MSI Z170A G43 Plus. it costs £107 here in the UK so should be under $150. can't fault it i'm happy with it. If you want SLI support then get the Z170A Sli Plus (the G43 Plus is Xfire).

looking at PCpart picker there are the highest rated motherboards for under $150:

msi z170a gaming 5
gigabyte ga z170mx gaming 5
asus z170a $138

At first I just wanted to get a decent and affordable 1440p monitor for my new setup, but I´ve looked around for so long that I´m actually considering just buying an Acer XB271HU. How did I end up here, lol.

if you think you can do without gsync and 165hz then what about the Dell U2515H? i just bought one and it seems to have a lot of positive reviews. it has 8ms (instead of 4ms) and still has an IPS panel. the Dell is $340 for the 25" or $475 for the 27".

Thanks for the suggestion, but since I´m going with a 1070 in my setup I feel like it´d be a waste not to get a monitor that has a refresh rate over 60Hz. I think that I would rather get a monitor that´ll last me longer, even if it costs me more right now. Might go for the XB270HU instead of the 271, because that one´s like 100 Euros cheaper.

Anyone planning an ITX build should really consider custom cables. This is the first time I've used Cablemod's Configurator thing and I'm super pleased with how it turned out.

Also, Asus's 4-pin headers on the gpu are an awesome idea. The bottom case fan is plugged into the GPU, so its fan curve matches the GPU fans.
This looks very neat. I have the same case, and the cables that came with my Seasonic G-650 were thick and hard to bend. How do the Noctua fans compare to Fractal's stock fans?

Just a tip BTW, both NH-D15 and NH-D15s could fit into the case.

I don't know where to ask but I need help identifying which part my problem comes from.

So since yesterday watching a video eventually gets me a black screen and windows 10 restarts like I'm just logging in. I see my username and arrives on a new session basically, nothing is open anymore.

No errors, no messages, nothing. So far it's only when watching a video and usually once it has crashed like that it's fine. It just messes up stuff and opening a game makes it stutter as hell so I have to reboot anyway.

Any idea? RAM problem? Please don't be the GPU, shit is expensive.
