Hey guys, I wanted to know what you guys thought about the PC, I'm about to build and wanted to hear your thoughts before I start buying my parts. I asked on here before, but I changed a few things since then. My budget is $850 and will upgrade it later down the line. I will be upgrading it to 16 GBs of RAM down the road but for now 8 GBs is fine, and will add a SSD later on.

Memory: G.Skill Aegis 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($30.98 @ Newegg)

I would go for a Z170 chipset mobo, lets you upgrade to OC'd RAM and offers the option of a K processor down the road. It's twice as expensive, but with added flexibility.

I have two quick questions. I asked a little bit ago with no answers so I'll be more succinct:

1. Will I see a big improvement in performance (primarily with games) if I go from an i5-3570K to an i5-6600K?

2. Is it on Intel's roadmap to change sockets or phase out the 1151 that would make it difficult for me to upgrade beyond the 6600K in the future?

Forgive my ignorance but is there a "clear" best GTX 1080? Thinking about upgrading from my 3 GB EVGA 780 but not really sure what the pros/cons are to the different 1080's. Also would need to get a 1440p monitor to reap the benefits since I just have a 144hz 1080p right now.

I've an EVGA 1080 Classified, which is basically the FTW version with better power phases -- very pleased with it. Did a lot of research and it seemed like the EVGA FTW (and this by extension) are tops.

Edit: To answer your monitor question -- It would help, but you would still get really high frames 100+ on most games with everything maxed out plus bonus settings at 1080p.

Hi guys. I'm coming to the point where my scrappy laptop just isn't cutting it anymore, so I'm looking to build a PC for 3D development and gaming. Never built a PC before, so I'm just looking for some advice.

Your Current Specs: Utility laptop, nothing of use.
Budget: ~£1200, UK
Main Use: Gaming 5, 3D Work 5, Video Editing 4, General Usage 5
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Unreal Engine 4, Blender, Let's say 60/1080 for The Witcher 3 should be achievable
Looking to reuse any parts?: Already own a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Rig needs everything.
When will you build?: Finished by ~26th September
Will you be overclocking?: Most likely

I've been checking out the cheat sheet, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

This would be a great rig for 3D work, but a little over your budget. It includes a great M.2 SSD which dramatically improves big file transfer speeds.

Cool, thanks. I'll definitely upgrade the motherboard after I put it together. Before I do that though, with the GA-H110M-A motherboard, How well will it run current (Dark Souls 3, Sonic Generations, Fallout 4, CSGO, etc) & future games like Battlefield 1?

Alright, suit yourself. Buy the 2400mhz RAM though, it's only a $1 more and it will still run at 2133mhz, then if (when) you go to a z170 chipset you can OC the RAM without having to buy new sticks.

Should run them just fine, over 60fps at 1080p. Not sure about Battlefield, rumors are it will be fine, will have to wait for benchmarks.

So I just installed my new Gigabyte G1 GTX 1080 and I'm noticing a substantial downgrade to the sound quality in the headphones that are attached to my HTC Vive. Is there a possibility that the 1080 could somehow be causing this issue?

The Noctuas are much quieter.

Neither of those heatsinks fit the motherboard. It has a vertical VRM riser and sound card that get in the way of the heat pipes at the base. After checking Noctua's site for compatibility I originally planned to use a NH-U12s, but it wouldn't seat properly for the same reason.

The NH-C14s works like a charm though. There's actually room for a second fan underneath the sink if it was needed (and it still clears the RAM). It also hides the weird u.2 cable.
I thought about switching those fans at one point, but man, are those Noctua fans expensive!

Is there much difference between a laptop 1070 and a desktop 1070?

I've been looking at prebuilt gaming PCs/laptops and in Australia it looks like you can get fairly similar prices between desktop and laptop computers. I currently don't have a monitor/keyboard so going Laptop is pretty appealing. Is there any significant drawbacks with going with a laptop over a desktop apart from price?

My desktop on both monitors randomly started going crazy and flashing black, and then it went to the Windows 10 Logging in screen, now my 2nd monitor isn't being detected, and I can't open anything NVIDIA related. Did my 980ti just fuck up?

This happened again today. Any ideas?

EDIT: I've just noticed after this happened I have to reinstall the latest Nvidia drivers. So that leads me to believe it is indeed a GPU issue. A Windows notification saying "Display drivers updated" or something to that affect and then I have to restart my PC.

I keep having windows install some crappy older version of the nvidia drivers, maybe that's happening to you too? Typical windows bs lol

So, having trouble deciding on my GPU upgrade. I moved my 970 to my new build. However, I intend to upgrade to something (and it must be Nvidia, so I can use Gamestream on my Shield TV from time to time).

I was originally set on a 1070. Seemed the best balance of power and price. However, seems the benchmarks show it barely ahead of a 980Ti. So, I wonder if that's enough of an upgrade to justify the cost, as reasonable as it is compared to 1080. The 1080 would cost a lot more, but would at least be a major upgrade.

Now, I am unlikely to be doing 4K gaming for the foreseeable future. I'm at 1080p now and probably at least the near future. I may, sometime, try get a 1440p.

So, any opinions on whether it's worthwhile to upgrade to a 1070? Or would the extra cost be worth it for a 1080?

I was in the same boat and with summer going and a small room, didn't want the added power draw of a 980Ti, even if it OC's better.

There's not a great card to upgrade too, really imo. I ended up with 1070, but it's so much of a placeholder price slotted card I'm very sad I bought one.

Have you tried taking the gpu out of the computer and using the onboard video and see if it does it then?

is windows on the same HDD as your files and stuff? if its not, just leave your files there, you can access them the same way after putting in a new mobo. HOWEVER, ill share my experience with my most recent upgrade. i moved all my drives (hdd x3 and ssd x1) into my new case with pretty much new everything else. win10 was still installed on the ssd. i figured on first boot with the usb drive inserted that has the win10 creation stuff on it it would take me straight to the windows setup stuff where i could delete and reformat the ssd. instead, it booted straight to my desktop. so the windows installation that was on my previous i5 sandybridge build worked when i replaced everything with i5 skylake, new mobo, and ram. i was surprised, as i was under the impression that it wouldnt work that way.

My windows is on my SSD. Everything else resides on my HDD. I'll try to just put everything in new and see how it boots and if it doesn't, I'll just clone the HDD to an external HDD and wipe the SSD and reinstall Windows. Thanks.

As someone with a measly i5 4440 looking at getting a Gpu upgrade, is the gtx 1060 pretty much my only option even with the RX 480 in the picture? I think I start to hit some cpu bottlenecks in some games already, so I've been thinking even if the 480 may look favorable going forward, maybe not so much if I don't have a beefier cpu to go with it.

So I've got a couple questions. I'm not going to be building a desktop until October/November. I'm debating between the rx 480 and the gtx 1060. However, I'm not seeing either one in Stock across multiple store fronts and multiple versions. How hard is it to be able to get one come the holidays? Between the two of them and without factoring in Crossfire, which one is the better gaming gpu?

Also, Best Buy is running an anniversary sale for themselves, and this 27 incheck monitor is on sale, and the pricing is suspicious. http://www.bestbuy.com//site/hp-27-...l-silver/5029800.p?id=bb5029800&skuId=5029800

Is this kind of sale on monitors common or is this a rare sale?

Hi guys,

quick question, I bought a Palit GTX 1070 but when I play Witcher 3 or Doom it gets so loud it's unbelievable. Is there any way to alleviate this or did I just buy a bad card and should I try to find another one.

Cheers

I have that gtx 1070 and it is badass, definitely was worth it and oddly enough in Canada when I got it the price was lowest of all 1070s even though it's stock oc'd and on top of that has a second OC profile via the gigabyte software.

As far as the x400 m.2 ssd, it's basically the same speed as the 850 evo sata model, it doesn't use the massive bandwidth available to that m.2 port like the Samsung 950 pro does. The 850 evo is also newer v-nand tech. I guess it comes down to price and form factor really. I went for a 512gb 950 Pro in mine, but I'd take the 850 as an alternate.

looks good other than that, and I think that case you picked looks awesome >_<

The two Palit cards are amongst the quietest 1070s out there. Is there good airflow in the case? Maybe try running it with the case opened up and see if anything changes? If all is well try hwmonitor and watch the temps and ram speeds, if it's unusually high even with good airflow it's possible the heat sinks don't have proper thermal paste applied etc.

Hey gaf help me out

Just got a new PC i5 6600k and asus p170, and got a Edifier p6030, my problem atm is, I hear a small buzzing even when I'm not using the pc speakers due to the connection on jack 3.5, i tried the front entrance and the back ones, it's not a loud buzzing but it's a bit annoying to be honest.

Have any idea how to fix this? I heard the asus got EMI protection so it should not have this kind of sound?
Is buying a better jack 3.5 gonna fix this?

Do you have a way of testing cable/speakers somewhere else? And / or some other speaker / cables on your new pc?

You need to troubleshoot a little.

my dell u2515h 1440p 60hz monitor arrived today!

now in the process of returning it as the screen was heavily scratched. quite disappointed to be honest as it is a really nice looking monitor both in terms of design and screen quality. i would have got a replacement but it's too much hassle. would need to send this back, wait for refund, buy it again and knowing my luck i'll end up with another damaged screen.

i think i'll just stick to 1080p + downsampling after all and keep my £290.

I think I start to hit some cpu bottlenecks in some games already, so I've been thinking even if the 480 may look favorable going forward, maybe not so much if I don't have a beefier cpu to go with it.

There is no such thing as CPU bottlenecking a GPU in most games. You can always stress the GPU in recent games by using crazy high settings or applying techniques like down sampling.

That being said, I've red somewhere that Pascal is less likely to be bottlenecked by CPUs.

I currently have 2 480GB SanDisk SSDs in RAID 0 (setup via my motherboard) on my PC.

I've seen the same SSD on sale so I thought I might pick one up and see if I can increase the size of my RAID drive. Is this possible?

Can I just extend it or would I need to wipe the drives and rebuild a new RAID? If it's the latter is there a way I can back up the entire drive before wiping it and then put it all back on a larger volume (the SSD drive is my secondary drive that stores my steam games and is the directory all my Windows documents and setting are located on - changed that via the Windows 10 stroage settings)?

I'm thinking of getting an 8BG 1070 myself.

However, my current system is a few years old, with an i5-3350 3.3GHz and 8GB ram.

Will the 1070 be capable of playing games (for instance, Arkham Knight, Elite Dangerous, any current gen console PC port) at 1080p with all settings max, or will the rest of the system be too much of a bottleneck?

Just bumping my question from a few pages ago

Got my new 6700k build running last night.

I know that I need to turn on XMP in BIOS to get my DDR4 3000 to clock properly. Is there anything else with this generation that I should make sure that I do first?

i don't think so. just start the overclocking process for your i7. i have the same cpu and can only achieve a stable 4.5Ghz so i guess i got unlucky. it's at 1.35V and i don't want to go any higher and it's not worth it for just another 100mhz. i think i'd need about 1.4/1.41V for 4.6Ghz. you probably will get better results. 4.5Ghz should be easily achievable for every 6700K.

Awesome. Yea I'll probably start on that tonight, too.

I'm running an (old) Corsair H60 cooler and I'm installing some new fans on the radiator tonight, so my temperatures should be really good.

Hoping that I can get a decent boost (4.5+) before messing with voltages. Never done that before and don't know if I want to start.

You could go this route:Or for around $700 resusing your CPU cooler, PSU, Case and HDD. This will run High-Ultra at 1080 easily.

Apparently the GPU is sold out with no restock available. New Egg has another that wants you to thermal paste the base-plate of the GPU. Which, I'm not sure if the same thing you listed since PC Part Picker no longer has an image for it due to it being out of stock.

Should I just wait until mid-September for the GPU's to restock? It wouldn't be a big deal. My 760 is totally fan cooled with no other maintenance for it, so if the one you listed is similar I can just wait for NewEgg and the other places to stock it again.

I've been stuck in the god damn desert for over 2weeks and my Titan build is just sitting at home waiting for me to assemble it. I just ordered all the fittings and the backplate. They should be here on the 29th.

My wife is also moving all of our things into our new house while I'm over here. I've reiterated to get constantly to make sure not to misplace any of my boxes. Man I'm so worried.

i think according to Intel, for Skylake, 1.5V is the max they recommend but I've read you should ideally stay under 1.4V.

Looks like stock is 1.2v.

My cooling situation isn't the best (although better than 'stock'), so I'll see what I can do at stock voltage to start.

Anything in the 4.5 range would be awesome.

Hey everybody, looking for some advice here if possible. I've come into a situation where I'm able to upgrade my pc but not sure which direction to go...my specs right now are below:

• i5 4690k @ 4.6
• msi z97 Krait edition mobo
• 8gb ddr3 1600
• 1tb hdd
• gtx 980
• 650 watt power supply
• 24" Benq xl2411z

I have about $2500 (CDN) to spend and I've decided I want to go with a 1080, but I have funds left over. I was either going to go Skylake and purchase an i7 6700k, 16gb ddr4, new motherboard and 512gb ssd...OR...simply go with the 1080 and purchase the acer predator xb271hu.

I guess I'm just not sure whether the upgrade to skylake is worth the extra money at this moment or if I'm going to get a bigger bang for the buck by going with the new monitor. Any suggestions?

In your situation I would upgrade the video card, get an SSD, and an extra 8gb of RAM.

I think your gaming and work experience will benefit more from the monitor + GPU upgrade but then again I upgraded to the XB270HU from a crappy TN 1080p60 monitor so you might feel less blown away considering you are already used to 144hz. Extra resolution, IPS + Gsync are still great reasons to upgrade though.

E: Oh, just seen the previous post. SSD (if you didn't forget to mention it) is a great upgrade too!

SSD for sure FIRST!
More and faster memory, gpu, screen thats all you need.
New cpu gives you nothing.
