I have no idea on the gpu I will buy, but I currently own a 7870 msi slightly overclocked. would the 930 bottleneck anything?

Having no experience with 144hz. Is 144 so much better then 100hz ? Would I see any difference? I'm coming from 60hz 1080p monitor. I don't want to spend so much money and find out something better comes out a month later

Edit: sorry quoted wrong person I'm at the beach and can't see :x

People say 144hz typically because that's what g-sync monitors and a lot of newer gaming monitors come in. If you can hit a stable 100fps then you probably wouldn't notice a difference no.

Simply check if your GPU is hitting 99-100% utilization.
Upgrading the CPU without changing the GPU will have a very small performance impact.

Newer high end GPUs would warrant a CPU upgrade though.

I'm trying to install a 2nd hard drive on my Windows 10 pc. I've tried two different drives and neither of them show up in windows or bios. One is a WD caviar black and the other is a samsung spinpoint. Do I need to set the jumpers? I thought sata cables would automatically detect the drives and assign them. Any ideas?

You connected a power cable from the PSU and a SATA cable from the motherboard to the HDDs?
They should show up in the BIOS atleast. Can you hear them spin up? Put you hand on the drive to feel if they are running.

I went from 144 to 100 Hz and can't really tell the difference visually. Don't play any online twitch shooters so can't comment on game input sensitivity.

Yeah. Weird, the drive didn't like the last port on the power cable. Tried another and it worked fine. /shrug.

Honestly, I think the next big jump after 30>60 is 60>80~100. I don't play competitive games and tbf, I probably wouldn't be able to differentiate 100 from 144 as long as it's not a side-by-side comparison. I assume you're talking about getting a 21:9? I imagine the added immersion provided by the AR would add more to the experience than a potential extra 44fps in this case.

Anyone know what the reason could be for my PC freezing or generally being fucked when I have a Samsung Evo 840 SSD connected?
Usually happens when I try to access it in Windows (it's a secondary drive for games, my Windows install is on a separate SSD). Windows explorer will crash at that point which basically means I have to restart my PC.
Sometimes it won't even get recognized by Windows (doesn't show up in BIOS either if I recall correctly) but to top it off it made booting up my PC impossible until I disconnected it since my PC would be stuck in a "Scanning and repairing drive" loop on startup. Haven't connected it since then because this whole ordeal was so irritating.

I actually have two of these (256 and 500 GB versions) and it happens with both so I doubt that it's a defect with the SSDs themselves but rather something with my setup.
Funny thing is that this fuckery only started a couple weeks after flawless performance in both occasions.

Yeah, I'm liking mine.

If I buy you an internet beer could you measure the depth? The dimensions I read said it was like 11.6 inches but I am curious how deep it is from the middle of the screen to the back stand arm. I am trying to figure out if it will fit on my desk that has an upper shelf for monitors that's 11.5 inches. I don't care if the curved corners overhang.

Didn't notice the PCI expansion slot bays had an upper covering that could come off and be replaced. Oops. Doesn't work perfectly since one side of the 460's plate is a bit bent, but everything boots and works fine for some light gaming.

Hey PC-gaf, I've been console gaming for years and have finally decided to make the jump to PC gaming. I have a laptop but if I try to play anything it gets ridiculously hot, and I'd prefer not to risk it considering the issues my last laptop had with heat problems. I've done a little research but was hoping for your guys' input. I've decided that for my first gaming PC I don't want to get anything too crazy. I'm probably mostly going to be playing older games, but I'd like something that can run recent games at a decent level.

some info:

Your Current Specs: Don't have one!
Budget: $800ish pre-tax, USA
Main Use: Gaming
Monitor Resolution: 1080p
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: I'd prefer to play my games at 60fps. In terms of modern games I'd like to play decently: Rise of the Tomb Raider, Dark Souls III, the new Deus Ex.
Looking to reuse any parts?: nope!
When will you build?: Somewhere in the this month if I can, but I'm no huge rush.
Will you be overclocking?: idk lol

I saw this build on pc part picker and wondered how it was, or if you guys can give some advice to someone that has no idea what they are doing?

Is there any wireless or bluetooth headset I could use to just chat on steam or skype? Something similar to the old Xbox 360 wireless headsets?

http://www.theverge.com/products/xbox-360-wireless-headset-with-bluetooth/3828

http://reviews.gamestop.com/9014/61048/reviews.htm

EDIT: Ideally I would want my friends voice to come through the headset and game sounds through my speakers. Is something like that even possible?

I use the Plantronics Voyager pro HD. Does the job you want.
Cons:
Pretty bad audio, similar to Xbox.
Users on the other end also hear a pretty bad voice, probably similar to xbox - crap for PC standards.
Battery is a few hours.

But its the only workable option i found =(

Damn that doesn't sound good, but it seems to be the only solution for what I want. Guess I'll pick up one of those Plantonics bluetooth headsets and see how it goes.

I plan to overhaul my whole setup when I move, but it's still 7 months away so this will have to do for now.

It's a few cents a day at most, if your using it throughout the day then keep it on.

1.It extends the longevity of your hardware especially if you have adjusted voltages etc.

2. It's at least being more responsible and helps reduce emissions in the long term.

3. It can easily add up in the long term. Computers are much more efficient nowadays. But you usually have lots of peripherals etc plugged in that are drawing extra power if you're anything like PC gamers I know. Unless you constantly put your computer to sleep then likely you're drawing near 100 watts if not more. That can add up in the long term. Let's be generous and say your computer uses 60w when idling with everything plugged in. On average in the U.S at least that's about $40-50 dollars a year. Over time that's money that can be used much better elsewhere.

4. Heat. Especially during the summer (in many place) you don't want to be generating extra heat when you don't need to, however minor it may be.

That's a solid build, just two things I'd recommend getting two sticks of RAM even if it's 2x4 (I'd recommend 2x8 it will only be about 15-20 more) to take advantage of dual channel benefits and I'd recommend waiting a week or two and get the new AMD 480 GPU that's significantly more powerful than the 380x at lower power usage and in the same cost range ($200-250). I only recommend waiting because custom partner boards become available (custom coolers, OC settings and minor tweaks to the boards voltages etc to yield more performance for relatively the same cost as the original cards). Others might have a few minor suggestions here on changes but generally it's a really good 1080p gaming machine you have there.

I've been using onboard sound since the beginning of time. Last week I saw a sound card sound blaster z at microcenter. Would getting a sound card improve sound quality? I'm using Astro a40 headset that plug in via usb basically.

This is probably a super stupid question, but its okay if I rest my Surface Pro 4 ontop of my desktop right?

Side question: The Type Cover's magnet gets a little stuck to the my PC case, but I'm assuming thats alright?

A good sound card will improve sound quality but I doubt a sound blaster will honestly. I do own a few audio cards cause I need them for low latency and production and they do make quite a bit of difference paired with good speakers. If you are willing to spend money on it, I would advice a basic DAW card over any sound blaster level cards. Something like the Steinberg UR22 will do just fine even if you aren't going to use it for music production.

It's fine, there's a lot of mobo's for instance that have wireless with a antenna that connects to the IO ports and then magnetically attaches to the case. As long as you aren't using some insane industrial magnet, you're going to be fine.

thanks for the advice! I actually won't be able to order the parts for another few weeks anyway, so that's perfect for me.

I ordered the parts for my PC on Friday. The case arrived yesterday, and the cooler, power supply, and SSD arrived today. The rest of the parts will slowly arrive over this coming week.

Quick question. I will download the Win10 ISO onto a usb drive. Will it be possible to activate using a Windows 7 key? I previous Bootcamped Win7 onto my Macbook Pro, then uninstalled and deactivated it before reformatting the hard drive last year.

Might depend if it's an OEM version of Win7 (rather than retail) as they're supposed to be used on a single PC only and can't be moved forward to completely new hardware.

1440p has breathed new life into my home workspace. I could feel that 1080p wasn't enough, just couldn't settle on a monitor until I said screw it and got the Dell GSyncs. Suddenly vertical oriented PDFs are more pleasurable to read, and side-by-side code isn't cramped.

Nice! Can you post a pic of your setup?
I'll try to post one tomorrow, doing a bit of house work.

It's a great monitor despite what the IPS cult says. Especially for sub $500.
Absolutely.

Are the AMD R7 360 and AMD R7 370 from the OP still a decent budget pick? Or should I just go for the RX480 or something? Looking to run iracing at 1080p 60fps.

Wont be as simple as that since the CPU is already OCd.

Heres what i would do:
Enable XMP 3200Mhz.
Drop the speed back to 3000Mhz
See if it boots, if not try 2666Mhz.

Then youll want to play with the VCCIO and VCCSA voltages, 1.1v on both is a good start point for 2666Mhz.
Keep the VDIMM at ~1.35v.

You might want to try doing this with the CPU at stock as a sanity check to make sure the CPU can even run these ram speeds at all, without the CPU OC having an impact.

Depends on what GPU you have or want to get.

Thanks. what i did was set my CPU back to 4.5Ghz but kept XMP on and set RAM to 2133 with 1.35V then just increased the the frequency a little each time and did a quick stress test. I have the RAM running at 2933 right now and no issues with firestrike, aida64 or prime95 blend. i probably could increase the ram a bit more but i'm happy to just keep it at this. the cpu is stable at 4.5ghz and the ram is stable at 3200 when cpu is at stock. can't do 4.5 + 3200 so just needed to find the right balance.

I just bought an SSD, how will I transfer my Windows 10, should I clean install?

How does my key transfer from the HDD to SSD?

You can mirror your HDD to the SSD without hassle and transition smoothly to the SSD. Most SSD manufacturers provide a tool for precisely this task.

Only thing you have to keep in mind is that HDD data size cannot exceed SSD space of course, so depending on how much stuff you have put on your HDD and how large your SSD is, you will probably have to delete or move some huge folders around.

EuroGAF: anyone here have experience with mindfactory.de? They've got some really well-priced GTX 1080s and I've been thinking of pulling the trigger.

I wouldn't be surprised if stock issues have yet to subside come August. The G1 I pre-ordered on Amazon a wee bit over a month ago now still doesn't have an estimated delivery date.

Yes, they are pretty good, bought components for two builds from them and sending some back / RMA was seamless. A bit on the pricey side with PayPal fees however.

Thanks! Was planning on paying by card anyway. Any particular reason for choosing PayPal instead? The KFA2 GTX 1080 EXOC is unbelievably tempting, even with international shipping it's around 70-80€ cheaper than any 1080 you can get in France.

No, I would guess the price will drop next year when they release a Ti version

If only I had the patience to wait so long haha, I've been confused with all of this "founders edition" stuff too.

Ouch, that's rough. I suppose I might as well just wait till they're more readily accessible in Europe, I'm only in the US for 4 days.
