Wow that's actually a very impressive price all considering. Was it some kind of special deal?

Why would you regret not going with the 6700k? The 6800k should be phenomenal if my 5820k is anything to go by.

Yeah the price was an Independence Day sale. I was surprised too and posted about it before I pulled the trigger.

Just concerned about the lower clock speeds and lower OC potential of the 6800k. I'm sure it's still a beast, just not as optimal for pure gaming as the 6700k (from what I've read).

It really doesn't matter anywhere near as much as you'd think. We're talking low single digit differences for the vast majority of situations.

So I'm building my first PC, and I got someone on pcpartpicker to suggest me a build a while ago, which came up with this: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Dw68Yr

I'm planning on ordering everything except for the video card(since there's no rx480 stock anywhere) in the next few days. But I wanted to see if anyone here would suggest different parts as to what's in this list. I was also wondering if 8gb RAM is good enough or if I should look to maybe change that to 16gb?

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to what's good and what's not, so before I order I was hoping to get some advice so I won't end up regretting it later on.

I picked up a gtx 1070 a few weeks ago and am loving it. I'm still on a 2500k build though, so I ordered a z170 motherboard, a 6600k and some ddr4 ram.

I really love my lian li PC-7FN case, and I also have an Antec high current gamer 750w psu. Is there any harm in keeping those two components? I've already got the power connectors routed cleanly so it should just be a matter of taking out my old mobo/cpu and popping in the new one, and of course re-applying my cooler.

Any reason to not reuse thesee parts? Seems like a waste of a few hundred bucks.

FYI the psu is now almost 5 years old, but I never had issues with it.

Is it worth it to build a new PC now for the free Windows 10 upgrade?

I need a new PC but I wanted to wait a little while longer but I already have a copy of Windows 7 I can use to get Windows 10 for free.

Will there be legal ways to get W10 for cheap or will it pretty much just be $120 for a while?

Hello guys. After hours of information gathering and adjusting parts I've come up with the following components for my rig.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor (€335.00 @ Amazon Deutschland)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler (€87.99 @ Aquatuning)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (€141.90 @ Mindfactory)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (€83.06 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (€96.56 @ Mindfactory)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (€52.00 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card
Power Supply: be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 10 CM 600W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (€107.94 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Monitor: Acer XB240H ABPR 24.0" 144Hz Monitor (€436.93 @ Mindfactory)
Total: €1341.38

Can you give me some recommendations for a good case for the noctua heatsink? I'd prefer a Mid tower if thats possible but I've not muh experience with cases (airflow, how big etc.) Thank you!

PS.: The Price for the GTX 1080 isn't calculated in the total price but its roughly 750€

My new motherboard has 4 SATAII connections, and 4 SATAIII connections.

Could I plug a SATAII hard drive into a SATAIII port? I am currently using all of my SATAII ports.

Since waiting for some funds to clear the i7 from Amazon has went up £30 and the RAM I want is a 1-3 weeks wait >< is it worth waiting to see if it goes back down? I have prime and wanted all the bits to come at the same time but it looks like I might have to shop around but by looking at it they're still cheaper than dabs etc

Novatech were the cheapest for the RAM I wanted but then they wanted to charge me £15 postage....lol fuck off.

is it even worth upgrading from a 3rd gen i5 to a skylake i7?

So I left the windows 10 upgrade (I'm on 8.1 desktop) running in the background while I was painting and browsing, and just now noticed that it's been stuck at "preparing for installation" for about 2-ish hours I think,.

rUnJfjk.jpg

Should I just leave it overnight? I've read suggestions to leave it, abort it, plug off the internet, etc.

My laptop upgraded pretty flawlessly, although it didn't have many files due to recent reformat. Should've just downloaded from microsoft instead of using the windows update I suppose.

*EDIT* left it for 3 hours and it finally finished updating. It was downloading some update files apparently. Now I'm on windows 10, will see if I can find some problems or not in the following days :)

Yeah just pic up an SSD, 240gb should be plenty. And 8gb of RAM is a lot more than people think. I have no issues doing all that I want on 8gb (video/photo editing, gaming etc). I have that case and it's great, plus the 480 is a solid card for 1080p gaming.

Never built a pc but ordered my case, fans, cpu cooler, wireless card so far. Waiting on the rest. Gotta figure the gpu out,but I think I'm going with the 1080.

I built mine over the weekend, and it was actually pretty easy. Things today have been made so easier for users. Like, no more needing to worry about master/slave hard drives, etc. The manual with the motherboard was pretty helpful to know where to plug things in, like the cables for the buttons on the case for example.

The only difficulty I faced was installing my Corsair Liquid Cooler, and not realizing I could plug the fans together, and not directly into the motherboard. And this was in the manual too, lol. Other than that, pretty easy.

I was considering an SSD, but to be honest, the faster boot times and or loading times for some games really don't matter that much to me. I'd rather spend that money on other parts to get better performance.

Honesty, <300 GB SSDs are really inexpensive today. I bought a 240 GB SSD for under $50. Well worth the price.

I will also weigh in and say get an SSD for OS at the very least. It's a QoL upgrade.

I'm trying to build/buy a nice work desktop for one of my parents. Thing is I have no idea how to even look at parts in this price/performance range. Anyone have any advice? AMD or Intel, and what models?

If you told us what that price/performance range was that would help.

Here's what I'm looking at. I think the Mobo is probably overkill but I live near a Microcenter so I can save some money on bundling it. Plus there are a few other parts cheaper there as well and this thing needs to last at least a few years.

Do you have an HDD, case or psu? I'm having a hard time getting anything under 900 for you in order to do what you described. And what country are you in? Germany has the best prices from what I could find.

The stock cooler isn't GREAT. If you have good airflow it should be alright, but you're going to be doing CPU intensive tasks like rendering I would get the better cooler. Sorry about the OS, just had it in there.

Edit: if you're happy I'm happy.

Looks good. You'll be WAY over 60fps on that set up, especially at 1080. You have a budget limit? I have a i5 6600k with a RX480 and it runs DOOM around 90fps on ultra settings most of the time. Any game I've played is crazy smooth. I also use it for Adobe Premier and it's really quick. For editing the i7 is going to get you just a few more seconds on rendering times, it'll be most useful for live streaming probably. You might want to think about dropping to an i5 if you aren't doing any super heavy CPU tasks. Cooler, mobo and memory are good. Might want to consider the WD Black 7200 RPM if you're going to be transferring large video files back and forth from your SSD.

Ideally I want to spend between $1300-$1400.

Haha! That's VERY close to the same build I have and it's quite fast. You'll be more than happy with it. And yeah sure as long as you don't mind loosing the data on them.

Ideally I want to spend between $1300-$1400.

This gets you right on budget using what you picked out. I added the case I have, because it's great. Just buy two more 120mm fans.

Make sure the little case cables are plugged in correctly (could be backwards etc), I have that case too and mine worked fine. Also check the Gigabyte audio program, every time I plug in my headphones it pops up and asks me what I plugged in.

I have the HD Audio cable plugged in correctly, there's only one way it could be inserted. Still, the front panel audio jacks do not work. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the Realtek drivers.

Should I install the Gigabyte software? I don't have them installed.

Also, does anyone have recommendations for fan control speed settings? I can change them in BIOS, but dunno what I'm doing.

You'll want a Z170 board for Overclocking on a K series processor, additional IO features etc. You should be able to find a decent one around the same price though.

Yeah go with this board:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($138.98 @ Newegg Canada)

I have the HD Audio cable plugged in correctly, there's only one way it could be inserted. Still, the front panel audio jacks do not work. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the Realtek drivers.

Should I install the Gigabyte software? I don't have them installed..

Yeah, I should have though of that. Go here and chose what OS you have and download them.

Also, does anyone have recommendations for fan control speed settings? I can change them in BIOS, but dunno what I'm doing.

You don't need to install any drivers for front panel or rear audio to work.

Make sure HD Audio is enabled in the BIOS.

Ok, I was able to find the Realtek HD Audio Manager in C:/ProgramFiles and changed a setting that lets the front audio panel work now. But if I have the headphones plugged all the way in, I only get audio from the left side, both sides get the left audio if plugged halfway in. Weird.

Well, I get much better sound through my USB DAC/Amp combo.

I need some advice about upgrading my current setup.

CPU: Intel i7 3770 @ 3.4Ghz
RAM: 8GB DDR3 @ 1600mhz
MB: Asus P8H77-I
HDD: Samsung 840 Evo 256GB + Seagate 2TB
GPU: Nvidia 670 2GB
PSU: OCZ 750w
Case: Bit Phenix Prodigy (mITX)

What would you guys suggest me to do? Should I scrap everything and start from scratch? I'm planning to keep my current 27" 1080p 60hz monitor for a couple of years and then probably upgrade to 1440p 144hz down the road.

Or should I keep pretty much everything and just get a new GPU?

There are smarter people than me here, but I think you could get by with just a new GPU (and add another stick of RAM if you can). At the very least, you can always build a new PC later with a new card.

My 32 inch Tv that i used to use as a monitor just died and now i need to buy a monitor since i've become used to using multiple screens at the same time. Any monitor recommendations? I care more about IQ than response, most monitors are very low anyway.

I'm looking at these at the moment: ASUS 23-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor

LG Electronics 21:9 Ultra Wide 34UM68-P 34"

I don't want to spend more than 400 usd, in fact, i don't really care about free sync and super high refresh rates, but i do care about IQ and size, any suggestion are apreciated.

$825+$250 for the RX480 = $1075

Edit: If you want to bump to $1200 we can set you up with a better SSD and HDD.

Depends on your budget. Jump on the build I made up there, just add this case and take out the hard drives. Or go for a 480 when they come back in stock and upgrade next year when Cannonlake drops.
