I can see a fan breaking being a fan... but two? Are you sure there isn't something wrong with how they are being powered?

Having purchased an i7 7700K just a couple of months ago, knowing the i7 8800k has six cores / 12 threads, and offers superior performance... kind of grinds my gears. The PC I built was the first time I've gone for a completely top of the line system. I usually stuck with the mid-range and been quite content. I was hoping Intel would allow people with Z170/Z270 motherboards to use the Coffee Lake CPUs, but alas that is not the case. Also, I have to say Asus including WiFi on the newest Maximus X Hero sucks for us Maximus IX Hero owners. I always felt like they cheaped out on that considering how much the motherboard costs.

Set out to build a $100 PC for myself, just as a fun hobby. Obviously it's going to be garbage by any modern standards, but I'll run a buncha benchmarks and see what it can pull.

So far, I've got an LGA775 motherboard, a Core2Quad Q6600, and 4 GB of DDR2 @ 866 MHz - all of that was $43. Looks like I can get a 250 GB HDD from Microcenter for $10 and found a local business that's dumping a bunch of their old cases/PSUs, so I can get a 450w Logisys PSU and case for $15 total... but man, that PSU makes me nervous. Saw a separate deal on Craigslist for a $15 EVGA 500w PSU which seems solid, but it'd probably put my GPU budget at <$30 at that point.

My biggest issue right now is finding a cheap PSU that isn't totally crap. If anyone has any advice for places to look for cheap/used/refurbished PC parts, shoot me a PM! Already doing the usual Microcenter/Craigslist/Ebay run of things.

Are there some general tips? Like first mount everything before connecting everything to the PSU? Or put the PSU in the case first.

I don't think they let you return part of a bundle.

As of a few minutes ago they had 438 of the 8700K's available.

Order breaks down pretty good.. $280 for MB / $350 for CPU with no sales tax for me.

As someone who was in your position a few months back, I’ll say that wiring is by far the stealth most troublesome thing.

I’d plug in all the necessary power cables you’d need to the PSU, screw it in then pull the cables out of the bottom/back so you have them ready to route as needed.

That said, mount the motherboard before you screw in the PSU.

I’d save the front panel connectors and smaller cables for last when you’re almost done. I had to reroute my USB 3.0 cable and couldn’t get the cable out of the motherboard connector and ended up pulling the plastic connector off the board and had to carefully line it back up with the pins.

Everything else is generally pretty easy plug and go outside of the cpu cooler. But yeah, try and do your best with routing cables, don’t commit too early and tie everything down.

Doesn't matter, because I missed it anyway.

So presumably this means my backordered 8700K is going to ship soon then, right? I've had that ordered since like 9AM EST (or EDT, I always forget which one is when) on the 5th.

Yeah I thought it was weird. One was connected to the motherboard; this one just won't start. The other was connected to a splitter to the motherboard; this one just twitches a little. The rest of my system is perfectly fine.

They're PWM fans going to PWM headers. Whenever I'd clean the case out I always put the side panel back on before starting it so I'm not sure when they went out.

I wouldn't put it past anyone to sell bundles and stuff before filling orders, but I'm cynical like that.

Mine says shipping 3 day tomorrow, so I tried to call and have them switch to 2 day so I could build this weekend. Guy told me he'd cancel and I could re-order after a few minutes (limit 1 per acct on CPU).. I'm like NOPE.

I'll be selling some newish parts soon btw. I have a lightly used 7700K, Maximus IX Hero board, and a boxed 4790K that is sealed.

I just ordered the bundle and items are being packaged. I also ordered on the 5th but canceled it after I got confirmation.

Now to wait for a deal on ram, case, and a cooler.

Yeah, I've literally had it backordered since the 5th at Newegg. If they are really filling bundle orders filled today before mine...

1) In general, look for other G.Skill RAM that is lower form factor (like Trident Z).. other good brands too, but shorter is always better if air cooling.

2) The M.2 form factor is the new hotness for all computers, not just notebooks. Just look for M.2 slot on MB that is X4.

You basically have the second best CPU for gaming, one that's still highly sort after by many but unattainable due to budget. Don't chase the dragon, man, or in the words of Kendrick. Sit down. Be humble.

If you're referring to a non-NVME SSD, it already looks like that for the longest time. Also, if you're getting a modern case, they should all have SSD mounts. Standard HDD mounts also have holes for SSDs/ laptop drives. If you're referring to M.2, then you should check your motherboard if it supports it.

CPU: i5-2500k @ 4.1 Ghz
RAM: 8 gb
GFX card: GeForce 560ti, its ancient its loud and runs rly hot in games 80+
Mobo: Asus P8Z68-VLX


So I am thinking of upgrading a gfx card. I found this card current price in my country is 250 euros. Its much cheaper than any other 1060 6gb cards but I cant find any info about this card, noise and temps....

Not sure if I should upgrade atm or wait 6 months for next Nvidia gfx card series and get whole new PC. Thing is with current spike due to crypto mining i am not sure if I will be able to get mid range gfx card this cheap in the future.

If i get 1060 now think my setup willl be able to run most games on med/high for next 2 years.

Any advice?

I had your exact PC and upgraded two months ago. I think you'd see a enough gains to warrant building a new PC. Stuff like NVMe and Ryzen are really impressive. As far as a GPU stuff, I really feel you. I would've gotten a Vega 56 or a 1060, but I just went with a 1080ti because of the crypto price hike. I had a hard time finding a mid-range card for a decent price.

So I’ve settled on building my PC in mid-December! But I need some opinions. Currently I’m torn between the Ryzen 1600, and the new i5 8400. This thing would mainly be for gaming (current, older, and hopefully 4 years from now), but my PC is usually an everything machine as well (watching movies/TV, internet browsing, and some super light streaming). In Canada, only $20 separates each build, since I’m just moving my GTX 1060 over into it.

I should add, it will be at 1080p, since I use my TV.

Help me choose!

Friends, it finally happened. I think my super old reference 7970 died. PC will not boot or constantly locks up with it in. :( My other 7970 is fine (I run Crossfire). I think it's time to throw in the towel on my setup.

If prices are basically the same and gaming is your main use, I'd probably go 8400, assuming they're in stock. I say this as someone that owns a Ryzen 1700.

1st question...is it worth upgrading from a 4770k yet? Want to stick with intel. If so, what should I get?

2nd question...anyone recommmend a good cpu cooler(for 4770k unless I should upgrade), thermal paste (unless included with cooler), case (black color), and hdd. Trying to purchase everything at one place like amazon if possible, if not no worries.

Currently I have one 140mm intake fan in the front of my case, one 120mm exhaust fan at the back, and the radiator for the CPU cooler (Corsair H105) mounted on top which acts as an intake.

Would I get better air flow/cooling if I flipped the fans on the radiator and had it blowing air out the top?

Might be better overall airflow, but it'd definitely result in negative pressure, which is a great way to build up a ton of dust.

Thinking of getting a node 202 for a ryzen 1600 gtx1060 build. Anyone had any experience with this case? Worried about noise levels and heat.

Well I made another mistake thinking AIO water cooling was a good idea. Picked up a 1080 hybrid kit and sure the temps are low but the idle noise is unbearable. I'm going to have to mod the pump to reduce the RPM or go back to my air cooler. Wasted £130, just like I wasted £80 on my h60 cpu cooler.

I'm upgrading mine the moment the 8700k is in stock. The 4770k isn't cutting it for me in high refresh rates.

It has essentially doubled in price within the last 12-18 months. It's gross. We can literally buy a modern 6 core/12 thread CPU for the price of 16 GB of DDR4.

In other news, my $100 PC build is tootin' along. Here's what I have so far:

MB: Intel DG31PR LGA775 mATX
CPU: Core2Quad Q6600 (2.4 GHz 4-core)
CPU cooler: Stock Intel LGA775 cooler
RAM: Kingston 2x2 GB DDR2 800 MHz
GPU: GT 740 4 GB DDR3
HDD: Samsung 120 GB SATA1 5,400 RPM
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 430w

All of that was picked up essentially individually (except the CPU/cooler/MB came together) for a total cost of $85.49. I'm now just needing a case which I'm hoping to pick-up locally for $14.51 or less. We'll see if that's doable.

Pro-tip: a $200 budget is a huge upgrade over a $100 budget. Like, probably boosts you up 3-4 years tech-wise.

Thanks! Coincidentally, it just arrived today and it turns out the Noctua NH-D15S is too tall for my case.

I have the Phanteks Eclipse P400 with the MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon AC MOBO (and the i7-8700k cpu). The case allows for 160mm clearance for the CPU cooler and the Noctua NH-D15S is 160mm, but from what I can tell, the metal tips will be pressing up against the glass of the case.

Anyone have another recommend cpu cooler to go with? I'm looking for something comparable: mid-high end performance, very quiet, and air only (unless liquid coolers have gotten MUCH quieter, I had liquid in my previous build and it was too loud for my tastes).

What about the be quiet! Dark Rock TF 67.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler? It'll definitely fit (131mm) and reviews look good and mention how quiet it is (it also looks a hell of a lot sleeker than the Noctua, haha), plus it's quite a bit cheaper.

So I finally got the shipping in 24-48 hours email for the i7-8700k I had on backorder at Newegg. I was getting a little worried when they briefly went back up for sale yesterday and I hadn't heard anything yet, but it looks like I just wasn't very high on the list.

Hey guys. So I have a monitor with 1 HDMI port and currently my PC's HDMI is plugged into it. If I wanna play PS4, I would have to switch the HDMI cable out to play PS4 and vise versa. Is there any solution where I can have the PS4 on another display cable, but still have the PC's HDMI cable plugged into the HDMI slot. I tried hooking up the PS4's HDMI cable to a DVI-D adapter. But I get no video when it's plugged into the DVI-D adapter.

Just buy an hdmi splitter.

Front intake is the best position for CPU temps. Top intake isn't right and exhaust will blow hot air from the case through it which is bad too.

If you want a giant cooler like the d15s you could get the Dark Rock Pro 3. It looks smaller and is supposed to be really good if it fits length and width wise.
