"I Need a New PC!" 2024-2025. 240 Hz OLEDs, PCI-Gen5, Path Tracing & Ray Reconstruction.

I finished my new build, and it's unfortunate that I'm out today because from some short testing last night the 9070 XT Nitro+ gets very loud at high load. My plan was always to reign it in for efficiency but I really need to get this thing to relax.

Did a couple of initial tests goes as per Tech Yes's video but had crashes, but as they were very quick "Let's see if his conservative settings work for me" tests I changed multiple things at once. Need to devote some real time into dialing this back.

I really hope I can get a stable undervolt and a reliable fan curve for a low noise ceiling because it's extremely off-putting hearing it ramp up. There's a small part of me that thinks it would be easier to return it for a base 9070 and enjoy the more efficient and lower power draw starting point, but let's see how I get on.

Anyone have any experience with external NVME drive docks or some kind of usb nvme reader? I was looking for something to use for file transfers, really nothing else. I want to get files from the old drives onto the new ones already installed.

Looking on Amazon and there's an endless list of items. These chinese brands that create brand names by tossing their scrabble tiles on the ground.

I'm leaning toward the cheap little doohicky that is just a drive slot with a usb connection on the end. So it basically looks like a thumbdrive. Except a I see a review that it overheats a drive, or kills a drive. This is the kinda crap I know will happen. I don't think the drives I'm going to be pulling from on this PC I'm using will overheat, but the PC I'm stealing the GPU from has a drive that disappears from time to time, and I'm pretty certain it's from overheating.

I setup my new PC, everything is ready to go, just have been putting off attaching the new cpu cooler and the GPU from the old machine

Intel 13700F :(
I updated my BIOS last night. This is my 3rd time to update it this year. This is a heart racing/pace the room back and forth procedure. But took less than 30 min. During that time it rebooted 3 times and as well as powered down and powered up on it's own 3 times. All the while staring at a blank screen with no indication that it was doing anything. Just powers intself back on, blank screen, wait, wait, wait, Logo, breath in, ok it's doing something.

I've read there are some Motherboards that have dual BIOS. Is this a good practice or worth the expense?

Never tried one. Not once have I had an issue with BIOS updates in my span of building computers since the 90s. Got to be around 20 motherboards over the years. I have had bad MB, but never from an update.

I enabled virtualization in uefi to get my xp virtual machine running (so I can get old digital camera to show up in xp since win11 does not recognize ls120 drives) and windows 11 enabled vbs and this core isolation stuff.
I disabled it because it's supposedly costs 5% performance.
This stuff.
all these settings are new to me. I never had virtualization on in uefi before so all of this appeared now.
What are general recommendations about these settings?

Nice! I'm building a "console killer-compact PC" build in one of these right now (the black version with wood in the front). It's really nice, but getting all the cables out of the way will be a struggle. It's gonna be connected to the TV, and will probably replace the consoles out there for most of the time.

A fellow A3 fan ..love it ( I went with the black)

It's a great case. I'm glad I didn't go ITX as this is about as small a workable space as my big clumsy hands can handle. I like the black with wood panel and was going to get it at first. Only reason I went with white is because my room is poorly lit and the white case makes it easier to see the ports on the front. Either way, no real complaints about it. Fantastic design. macro ATX is my go to for now on.

Got an Asus Prime 5070ti last night for 829. Total cost was slightly over 900 with the quickest delivery. At least it's better than the Ventus model I was gonna buy earlier. The tarrifs basically mean 829 is probably msrp now in the states. There is a PNY that goes for 750, but it's loud as shit, and there's some fan clipping on some models.

The ventus sucks but the prime is good for "msrp" prices.
How much do these third party cards actually differ from one another? How much better is an Asus Rog Strix versus some PNY or Inno3D card?

I went for microATX as well. And a 240mm AIO cooler to make it a bit easier to get the PSU as high up as possible. (To get a bit more space for the cables underneath it, and not having them block the bottom fans). A lot to thing about when building in a small case!

Yep. Got a Thermalright Frozen Edge 240 AIO. Bought a 280 at first, but that was just too large (what she said). Kinda just have to tuck the cables out of the way where you can, but if you keep it simple enough with only using onboard m.2, for example, then it makes it easier.

I'm thinking of grabbing a used 6800xt and building a PC off of that. Would a 7600 be a good CPU to pair with it? Also, I may go for a 6700xt too. Is the ~100 difference between them worthwhile for the extra power in the 6800xt?

Exactly what I did , Shoved all that shit into the corner underneath the power supply to keep it out the way, I went for air cooling and still keeping a nice 40c average
This sexy slut keeps flirting with me though:

I almost broke down and ordered one of these overpriced GPUs. Just the fact that it's in stock is tempting me. I held strong. I refuse to pay their inflated prices.

I still haven't put my new machine completely together. CPU cooler and my old GPU still need to get plugged in so I can boot it up for the first time. I just wanted a completely new system, not this thing with the old GPU.

Folks is the Nvidia driver : Driver Version: 576.28 - Release Date: 2025 April 30

Okay now or is it still shitting up cards? I have a 4090 fwiw. Thanks.

Wonder if any GPUs are going to become hard to find in the near future. I live in LA and the ports in my city have already slowed down significantly.

Just finished my "console" Lian Li PC as well.
A 5070 TI / 7800x3d combo with microATX mobo, 240mm AIO and 1200w ATX PSU.
Very happy with it. Feels like a true next gen system, compared to the PS5 Pro.
And the case fits as a "little brother" to my full tower Antec Flux Pro main PC, which also have walnut finish.

Looks fantastic

Intel's Arrow Lake has been a colossal disappointment. Colossal. Its simply priced wayyy too high and doesn't offer the value and upgradeability that AMD does.

But here is bundle that is actually decent....

$299 for the 265K and 32GB DDR5 is actually a deal worth considering.

Pair this with a decent B860 motherboard for around $175, you can get a decent Intel system.

I'd still spend a little more and get an AMD B650 chipset due to platform longevity.

But this is the first time in a while there is an OK Intel deal.

Don't look now, but 5000 series GPUs are readily available at Microcenters. You can now do store pickup, which means demand has cooled a bit.

None of them are at MSRP, but there are a few $600 5070s and a few $825 5070 Tis.

9070XTs are now officially a unicorn and the ones that are available are between $800 - $900.

As much as I hate to say it, the 5070 Ti is the far better deal in that scenario.

An under $700 9070XT is the GPU to get in terms of performance and value, but apparently that is long gone.

I love that case and have been thinking about downsizing my bedroom desktop PC.

There is virtually no difference in terms of performance.

In almost all cases, the performance difference between a $750 MSRP model and a $1000 "decked out" model is negligble at best, non-existent at worst.

I was into the RGB craze for a while, but I am so done with that. Mainly because I got tired of all the software and bullshit.

EVGA was the one brand I would pay a premium for, but they're not here.

In my case, I get all my GPUs as close to MSRP as I can.

Not true. More RGB, more better

Really pushing your luck with that TV size, aren't you!

How's that 8bitdo controller going for you? Know of any secret programs that let you remap buttons freely that I should know about?

My inability to keep my funny money away from the hardware manufacturers has led me to ditch the PS5 Pro early and build myself an HTPC next gen console instead, again (yes).

Was gonna go for a 9070 XT but the model i wanted didn't fit in the case (Fractal Design Terra), so i went for a Zotac 5070 Ti SFF and am very happy with it so far:

ASUS ROG Strix B850-i GAMING WiFi
Fractal Design Terra (the green one)
Zotac 5070 Ti SFF
32GB bla bla
Ryzen 7700 (non-X, works better for my use case because of thermals and bla bla)
Noctua NH-L12S (70mm)
Noctua low profile case fan for exhaust in the bottom
Corsair SF1000

Spend hundreds of hours in MHW on the Pro before and the difference is striking, even with the game being not exactly well optimized.

Fellow GAFers inspired me to give this project another go and i actually managed to set W11 to auto login on boot this time. The thing goes straight into BPM.

But the biggest win for me personally is being able to cold boot the PC wirelessly using a remote. The Silverstone SST-ES02-USB does the trick and works perfectly. No wake on lan, no fiddeling around with stupid mobile apps etc. couldn't be happier.

Will post pics later.

So I built a new PC in March, it's been great but the only thing I didn't upgrade was my GPU (3060ti). Well until now... I managed to get a prebuilt with a 5080 in it for what I believe is a good price, so I guess I'll have a 2 new PC's now. The prebuilt has an Ultra 9 285, better than what I just built hah

The Core 285 is a terrible CPU for gaming. Even a 13th or 14th gen deliver better performance.

Congrats on the 5080, how much did it cost?

Word, according to benchmarks its better in gaming than my 14600k that I just built. But maybe they were cherry picked. Either way, my 14600k will be my daily driver. The 5080 is going to that PC. 3060ti is going to the Ultra 9.

Congrats on the 5080, how much did it cost?

Around $2300 for the whole PC.

Arrow Lake is fine, you can get it to a place where it consistently outperforms any 13-14th gen or non-X3D AMD part, but it requires tinkering with RAM and uncore clocks to really deliver.

Yeah, it's about 1 cm clearance in top right corner. My girlfriend said it was no way that TV would fit there, but it somehow did!

I haven't really done much remapping outside of the regular 8bitdo software. Putting the triggers to the back buttons makes a nice setup for Clair Obscur.

Hey all--

My best friend and I built my wife a computer many years ago. At the time, it was fairly high end.

Now its really on its last legs. The video card has finally given up and its gradually slowing down.

We use it for homeschooling but are ready to get it upgraded. I have a local guy who runs a computer shop who is extremely reliable.

My budget would be around $800 at the highest end, maybe $900. What are some options available to us? Id want it to be powerful enough to run most games..doesn't have to do the highest end stuff graphically.

Any help would be appreciated. If people are curious on say, something shed want to play, Oblivion Remaster and Clair Obscur come to mind.

If you have an $800 budget for just the GPU, then a 5070 Ti or 9070XT is easily the best bet. However, I'd be curious to know what CPU/Mobo you have as it sounds very old and you would likely need a full system replacement for an upgrade.

If $900 is for the whole system, you're not doing anything high or even decent quality with that kind of budget, especially for the games you mentioned. You can make a low end at best.

Your best bet is to save up a while longer and stretch to at the bare minumum of $1500. $1800 is better.

Seriously.

Otherwise, look at pre-builts on Best Buy, but any prebuilt in that price range will likely have you stuck with a 4060 and that is such a crap GPU.

Sounds like my worst fears have been realized. Unless I'm rich as fuck with disposable income, its just not possible to build one at that budget range.

Not mad at you, just frustrated at the whole pricing situation we're in.

I was able to build a functional PC for $813 on PC part picker.

but its a shitty PC

IF GPUs werent so damn expensive right now, you could build something barely useable for around $700.

JohnnyFootball JohnnyFootball 's recommendation for saving up a bit and also for pre-builts is a good call, especially if you can be patient for a good deal. I picked up a pre-built on closeout from Costco a few months ago that was an i9-14900F, 32 GB DDR5 RAM, 2TB NVMe, with a 4070 Super for $1199. Unfortunately the closest thing Costco has to this now is almost double the price, or $1000 for their pre-built with the 4060. Sales and deals will come and go.

I also agree that the 4060 is not a great card, but could still technically play the games you mentioned at 1080p:

Clair Obscur
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060:
  • Medium Settings, 1080p (Native) — 63 FPS;
  • High Settings, 1080p, DLSS 4 (Quality) — 74 FPS.

Oblivion Remaster
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 OC (8GB):
  • Low Settings — 60-72 FPS (average);
  • Medium Settings — 50-62 FPS (average);
  • High Settings — 38-52 FPS (average);
  • Ultra Settings — 22-34 FPS (average).

The cost of GPUs is absolutely horseshit

Thanks very much! I really appreciate everyone's input, even if it isn't the most ideal news.

She did tell me today that she has no real interest in gaming beyond 1080p, so I suppose that changes things up a bit.

She mostly(outside of the games I mentioned specifically) plays Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Fallout, used to play Final Fantasy XIV.

I am considering upping my budget to around $1200-$1300 as I can handle that a piece at a time or via financing.

Well I did it bought a new PC. Cost me 3k eurodollars but it has a Ryzen 73D and a Suprim 5080.
What else was I going to do with that money, realistically? Have sex? HA not likely.

Been looking at additional case fan(s), need thoughts.

I knew when I got my case I'd want another intake fan sooner or later, and I definitely do now. I dread to think how much dust the negative pressure has brought into my shiny new system already.

I was going to get a single be quiet Silent Wings 4 140mm, which is about £22, but noticed I can get a 5 pack of Arctic P12 120mm for less than that.

Current setup is
In: 1x 140mm be quiet Pure Wings 3
Out: Same as above

I could in theory go for the 5 pack of 120mm, use 3 on intake then use the other 2 to replace the fans on my Peerless Assassin cooler (which have been known to be less than silent). Then I could relocate the 140mm that's currently in the front to the top, which would give me 3x 120 in, 2x 140 out.

I haven't looked into how that would be and it might be overkill, it's only that 5 P12s are cheaper than a single Silent Wings 4 that I'm toying with the idea. Maybe you get what you pay for.

I don't know anything about those specific fans. But, in my experience, the bigger fans can push more air at a slower rpm. Which means quieter, generally. Depends on the fans of course.

My current case is open air with no fans, so I'm not up on the fan market.

I would always lean toward 140mm options when looking at radiators or cases.

I have one case from cooler master that used 250mm fans. They were awesome fans, case was massive though. I looked for 250mm option maybe 10 years back. Cooler master stopped making that fan and made a less sturdy product and all other brand options were much flimsier as well.

Toying with switching to oled. I would need a WOLED panel as my room is windowed out and super bright. I might just wait till the next tech comes around. Like micro led or mini forgot the name.

Need some help GAF. My MIL is wanting me to help her find my FIL a new PC strictly for office work. She specifically mentioned he'd need a lot of memory for files/photos. Beyond that he won't be doing any sort of gaming or heavy downloads, thanks!

Sounds an awful lot like "memory" means HD space. Unless his job software needs a lot of RAM for editing maybe. I would chalk that up to someone not knowing the correct term. I doubt this person needs anything special in regards to hardware. Just get a decent sized HDD or SSD for their files. Find out what they have used up now and go from there.

A Dell or Lenovo or hp pre-built is all they need.

Correct I meant storage, and thanks for the clarification on what to shoot for.
