If you have a wii U and a copy of xenoblade, put dat on your gamepad

Can you play wii games with just the Wii U gamepad now? Or do you still need a wiimote?
It just acts like a small TV. If they ever got it to work as a controller expect it to only act like a CCPro so all Wiimote based games would still need the Wiimote.

Not much irks me as a gamer.

But modding, unofficial emulation, modding to break region-lock, monkeying with official releases...these thing truly disgust me. Playing console games on PC is so wrong. All these things I find incredibly disrespectful and offensive. Play games on the consoles they were made for...or at least wait for official solutions. If they don't arrive, so what.

Nintendo offers Wii playback on the gamepad as an option and the OP is excited and instead we get folks coming here with their crap Dolphin statements. Disgusting. There is a dedicated thread for all that stuff.

As an aside: I've never owned a PC, and likely never will. I'll certainly never use one to play console Nintendo games.

I don't even

I mean I can understand the mentality regarding Dolphin (and that it's kinda off topic for this thread), and even some mods that enable online cheating and piracy, but I find it very conceited of you to turn your nose up to a lot of the mods that are made to make things even more fun, easy, and convenient for people (things like Project M, USB Loader, and other homebrew) JUST because they're not "official". I mean do you WORK for Nintendo or something, that's the only thing I can think of.

you also have to download a patch to fix the FPS if you had the PAL version of the game, you also have to make sure you run it with OpenGL to make sure it runs smoothly, and figure out which audio setting works best for you, as no sound setting works perfect with xenoblade and it will stutter and pop

Uh not really. The patch sure, but the other stuff? With the build I used, the sound was perfect and I used DX9 for the render.

I finished the game twice with no issues, no pops or crackles and no crashes.

well then you are very lucky as well as awesome! really though, having a softmodded wii, a high-end i5 or i7, a willingness to mess with settings and deal with bugs, a compatible bluetooth adapter/drivers is a pretty lofty list of goals. obviously if you already have these things, yes it can be plug-and-play

I would consider it if the Gamepad buttons worked like a classic controller and not just as a small, shitty, wireless monitor, but the way it is now Dolphin is the way to go. Missed opportunity, Nintendo.

I totally forgot the Wii U could do this, so at first I thought the thread was about some insane secret function of Xenoblade to work on the pad, but then I remembered this was a thing I forced myself to forget because Nintendo always absurdly stops short of doing the most intuitively coolest thing they could do.

I actually had a basic Phenom X4 955. Nothing else ran properly on Xenonblade, but this specific AMD build ran it perfectly. I was amazed

Nintendo making the Wii library downloadable on Wii U via Eshop would be huge..I'd buy Xenoblade right now. retail? Nahh thanks it's not available anywhere where i live.

While they're at it make gamecube and N64 games available too.

This is why nintendo isn't pushing systems imo.. they have such power to make their system amazing.. yet they fail to see things that make the average gamer say HELL YES.

They have the nintendo people that will buy the mario's and zelda religiously in their pocket.. but they need to expand on what they offer.

I love my Wii U but i can see it doing so much more.

You sound like a swell guy to be around.

I came to this thread very excited to play Xenoblade on the gamepad (when I get a Wii U).

...

But I am less excited about having to play it on the gamepad and use an additional controller. I am surprised that Nintendo thought removing controller functions from a controller was somehow a good idea.

Wouldn't it be easier to make the Wii U GamePad act like a CCPro in order to trick the game into thinking one is plugged in? The GamePad is clearly running outside of the Wii environment hence why is can display its own messages when you press a button.

There are multiple problems, among them:
- Some Wii games require BOTH Wiimote and Classic Controller buttons. For example Monster Hunter 3 where you can point the screen to register monsters/see descriptions even if you're playing with the Classic Controller (and there's no way to do it with the Classic Controller).
- Wii U GamePad sends inputs over wi-fi. All Wii controllers sent inputs over Bluetooth.

I let my friend friend borrow Xenoblade. He hasn't returned it yet and it's been at least half a year. I hope he gives it back soon...I mean, I do have his copy of Chrono Cross.....ugh.

they didn0t remove controller functions.
they added the possibility tu use the Wii mode on the gamepad as a tv screen
I'd like they to add the chance to play with the gamepad for the classic controller-based Wii game too, with the next update (while obviously tons of wii games will never be playable without the remote)

i dont imagine it would be too difficult to make the gamepad work with these games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_that_use_the_Classic_Controller

but what do i know.. throughout the wii's life i always just used my gamecube controllers, and never bought a "classic" controller (until recently). it was great trying to run Wii VC games on my U and having it tell me "you need a classic controller" and me being like "im holding a damn controller!"

Xenoblade deserves much better than 480 x 800. Dolphin is the only true way to play it.

To bad with the specs below no matter what settings I choose or version of Dolphin I run I never can get the game to run flawlessly on Dolphin. There is always audio stutters as early as the opening fight.

Intel Core I7 2600K
8 GB RAM
GTX 670
Win 7
SSD drive

This is adorable.

You are precious.

But not all original assets are at the same res originally, right. I sometimes check out the dolphin screen-shot thread and seems like a lot of games have issues with UI being different res, etc.

While it's true there may be occasional issues with UI scaling and whatnot, for the most part Dolphin is actually allowing you to see game assets as they were originally created. Things like models and textures in general are often rendered at a lot higher quality, but if you're limited by what the hardware is capable of you'll never see all the detail that was put in by the dev team.

What Dolphin build are you using and what settings? I have similar specs and have no real major issues, though my rig's overclocked.

This seems kind of strange but, can someone gave me their save game around the part where we go to the other bionis (don't remember how it's called). I gave my Wii to my sister and someone broke into her appartement and stole a bunch of thing, and my Wii AND my 100+ hours of Xenoblade. I didn't finish it yet. I just want to go to the end but I don't want to watch a playthrough. I gave this game so much, I want to experience it one last time but I don't have the time to redo it all from scratch.

I really think you're going to struggle finding someone with a save right at the start of Mechonis. Besides, you won't recover your unique factors (weapons/armour sets, levels of characters, sidequests, etc).

Honestly, you're better off just starting again. It's worth it. And fuck the guy who stole your shit.

Do you guys think Nintendo will ever let us play Wii games via the gamepad without the wiimote?

lol

I do have an idea though, which I will definitely try when I get a spare Gamepad in the future. Essentially, hack apart a classic controller pro and wiimote. Take only what's necessary from the main boards, and wire them up to the Gamepad's controls.

You'd lose the functionality of it as a Wii U gamepad, but you'd get the screen display AND the classic control input for Wii games. It would be ideal for games like Xenoblade and VC titles.

It's definitely doable. Obviously you'd keep an unaltered gamepad for Wii U titles.

Its not a flip the switch thing, most wii games would need to probably be individually coded inorder to work on the gamepad, games with cc support will probably be easier but they cant just make every wii game work using the gamepad only

Really ? *sigh*

At least I remember almost every quest from the game and where to find them.

Now... to build a new Wii and the game in a few months or wait a year and get a Wii U

So... i tried Xenoblade for the first time on my WiiU, actually as the first Wii game ever on my WiiU (i had completed the game on my regular Wii obviously). A couple of things:

I did feel the game looked better on my WiiU (HDMI) than it did on my Wii (Component? The one with the 5 cables). Either that, or my memory has done the game a disservice by exaggerating how bad it looked on Wii.

It did look "smoother" on the gamepad, but it lacked a bit of sharpness, so overall i still would prefer it on the big tv over the gamepad.

I feel people are overreacting when it comes to playing Wii games on the gamepad. Obviously, for motion based games and especially pointer games, it would be clumsy to use the gamepad as a small tv for you to wave your wiimote in front. And yet, is there an alternative? Can we really expect them to map motions and pointer controls to buttons? Each game would need its own patch, this would simply not be doable.
So what's the fuss all about? Not being able to play games which don't have motion or pointer controls and can be played with either the classic/pro or gamecube controller? Well, when i tried Xenoblade, i had no difficulty whatsover, just putting the gamepad on my lap, and playing with the mote+nunchuck combo, with my hands next to my legs on the couch. I seriously feel this is being blown out of proportion. Of course you still need a second controller, but as soon as you put your lazy as down after grabbing that controller, it really didn't bother me. But ofcourse, that's just my opinion.

I know I'm late to answer for this but GOD DAMN WHAT?

I love Nintendo, I own every Nintendo system ever(except the Virtual Boy haha), and yet I love to emulate console games on my PC. I buy the damn games and I love to play them in the best way possible, I'll never wait for "official solutions" if someone gives me one first.

Xenoblade on Dolphin is one of the most beautiful experiences I've had as a gamer, and I had already finished the game on my modded Wii because I imported the EU version(and I still bought the NA version Day 1)

What is the spec to run Xenoblade on the Dolphin ? I had lag while trying to play Pikmin 1 with 100 pikmins on the field...

I played through it on Dolphin three times in 1080p with perfect audio and no slowdown whatsoever with an AMD Phenom II x4 3.4ghz, 4GB of RAM and a Radeon 6870. I used a specific AMD build which made the game run like a dream.

nothing else ran that well though

thanks Awesome Rich, will try it.

The day they let us play these on the gamepad, I will be playing all my Wii games over again.

I wish a journalist would ask them this, and really press them on it for a comment one way or the other. Is it possible? Is it something they're planning? Is it impossible?

Nope, not really.

The Wii backwards compatibility is essentially walled off. The playback via the gamepad is literally just the Wii U re-routing the video output via the video processor to the Gamepad screen. It's just a TV, in simple terms. There's no chance of the gamepad actually interacting with the Wii games unless they go all out and completely re-write the ios' used in the console, which could fuck up a lot.

Even if they managed to pull it off, I can't imagine Nintendo implementing it and saying "Hey, most of these games can't be used without a Wii Remote and Nunchuck but we'll let you figure that part out."

I just wish someone would find a way to stream from PC to a gamepad and then we'd have Dolphin at least.

My idea above of hacking the internals of a Wii Remote and a Classic controller apart and fitting them into a gamepad, wiring up to the gamepad controls could theoretically work.

Sure, you'd need to find another gamepad and know exactly what you're doing, but still. It's doable.

This is probably the best place to post this but I started this tonight on my WiiU (thanks GameStop Black Friday deal) all I can say is wow!

Yeah the graphics are a little rough but everything else is what I have been wanting in a JRPG for years!

I'm blown away!

I played about 2 hours on the game pad and 2 more on the TV. The gamepad hides some flaws but overall I prefer playing on the TV.

For those who were on the fence I hope you got the game. The game isn't used at all. They took the shrink wrap off and slapped a pre-owned sticker on the UPC. I look forward to playing this game during the inevitable game drought. And if you aren't on the eastern time zone, you've still time to get it.

Yeah my "pre-owned" copy was pristine. Had the club nintendo code too.

Lol GameStop please
