IGN: First piece of Star Wars Battlefront concept art revealed [and some vague info]

Who wants to bet? Here's what I'm guessing:

-Regenerating health
-No bots/AI troops
-No space battles
-First person only
-Loadouts with unlockable blasters and attachments and equipment and perks and grenades
-Can't play as Wookie
-Can't play as Jedi/Sith
-Tons of DLC
-No selectable eras. Stuck in Rebel vs Empire. -No droids

Yes on regenerating health
Probably on no bots

I think space battles will be in. Call me optimistic, but I really think ground-to-space will be one of the few things that survived Free Radical's BF3 (hell, it was in Elite Squadron on the PSP)

Yes on FPS only
Yes on loadouts
Maybe on wookies
Yes on no heroes. But the BF community was already split on those to begin with. A lot of people really liked the idea of being a generic soldier instead of OPed classic characters from the movies.
Yes on DLC but that's the nature of AAA gaming in 2015. If Pandemic was making this game, they'd have tons of DLC too.
Yes on selectable eras, but maybe also yes on no clone wars. We already know that locations and themes from Ep VII will be in this game. And obviously the classic battles from OT will be included as well. PT/ Clone Wars may be the odd man out.

It's been ten years of waiting.

No Jedi/Sith is clearly wrong. That'd be like making a Harry Potter game and forcing you to play as a muggle. My guess is it's a killstreak reward or something similar, and there will be a jedi mode.

First person only is a deal breaker for me. Just give me third person.

Guess they didn't learn any WWI type lessons in the Star Wars universe.

Considering the Star Wars universe is in another galaxy and like thousands of years before WWI, I'm guessing no.

That concept art seems absolutely pointless. It shows off nothing new that anyone familiar with the Star Wars franchise wouldn't already know. As far as trying to illustrate a concept, it fails.

Show us real footage, not bull shots.

Yeah, man! So much this! Do they expect us to think concept art is actually in-game footage or something? Or that we would read the title of the thread?!

Well, you know, it kind of is! It's in house concept art, used for their own teams, believe it or not! It's not meant to illustrate the fundamental playstyle of the game, show you how many fps the game is going to be, or even anything about the game really!

Because, you see, AAA games typically rely on something called "marketing" and marketing, believe it or not, has a lot to do with another crucial aspect known as "timing", which is where you regulate an occurrence of something to achieve a desired effect. Now, if EA were to start throwing out information willy-nilly, it would throw off this timing, making their future marketing less impactful.

And, aside from that, not everyone on this here planet we call home has actually seen Star Wars! I know, right? Think of all the dank memes they are missing out on! Thus they need to have art to help visualize a concept!

“The scale of our maps and modes offer a great variety” depending on the location, Fegraeus explained. Hoth, where the Rebel Alliance fought off invading AT-ATs in snowy plains, will differ in size than the dense woodland of Endor.

“We have actually made the decision to specifically tailor certain maps to certain game modes,” Fegraeus continued, “and what we get from that is not only incredibly varied scales, but also gameplay that will allow players to live out some of their most memorable Star Wars battle fantasies.”

DICE’s Frostbite Engine brings that to life by way of the studio’s “internally developed photogrammetry systems.” With photogrammetry, developers can use photographed images to achieve an incredible level of detail – we saw this in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, which IGN nominated for Best Graphics in the 2014 Best of Technology category.

“We’ve been showing the game to some close partners and one of the things we hear is that it doesn’t feel like other shooters and that it’s fully born from Star Wars. That really strikes a chord with me and the team as that is exactly the emotion and feeling we are going for and we can’t wait to show the world more this spring.”

oh thank god for this. They are not trying to cram all game modes in all maps :)

Also, I wonder if there will be any maps/weapons/vehicles from Episode 7, as the game will be coming out within a month or so of the movie.

What concept should it be trying to show?

The whole idea behind Battlefront is massive, chaotic battles on an epic scale set in the Star Wars universe. That's pretty much what I see from this art.

It's a Fall 2015 game.

They're trying to avoid taking attention off of Hardline while still doing a bit of marketing.

Allegedly, Battlefront was pushed back to "Holiday" 2015, which probably means late November, to better coincide with the December release of Episode 7.

It's probably just a reminder this exists, as we're not likely to see anything real-time on this until June.

I hope they avoid the ground to space transitions. That would be like the jets in Battlefield, where they might as well be playing a different game.

That'd be fantastic, really. I'd love to have ground troops have special abilities they can call in like airstrikes and such, but on a cooldown. The cooldown would increase based on how many ships you had in orbit, and you could lose abilities entirely if things went bad in the skies.

This would make the space aspect not so crucial as to force players into positions they don't want to be in, but not so worthless as to be able to be completely ignored.

And they're following Dosney's lead, even though this isn't explicithly tied to Epispde VII.

Same reason we haven't seen that much Mad Max.

That actually sounds similar to Battlefield 2, where you can take out certain structures to disable commander abilities.

It wouldn't be terrible because they would have little effect on the outcome of the game. But having played a lot of Battlefield, I can say with certainty that a lot of pilots would end up ignoring the objectives to have random dogfights.

They will definitely do eras. Episode VII necessitates at least another era to complement the OT. I have a feeling they'll do some Clone Wars stuff as well.

It's going to be really lame if this ends up first person. We have enough fps games. 3rd person is more true to what battlefront is.

What? Like getting rid of being able to get in a space craft and fly up into space?

Hell no, that's the coolest thing about Battlefront and Battlefield for that matter- the realization that while you're an infantry guy on the ground, you can have planes/jets/X-Wing taking off and flying above all controlled by people.

Don't get rid of that stuff but just find a way to integrate it into the ground battles better.

Exactly. It was fun playing as the Jedi and Sith for a while in Battlefront 2 but I always enjoyed the fact you were a standard soldier.

Want this alot! Nothing has been able to beat Movie Battles 2 as the most fun and authentic star wars multiplayer game so far, but this could definetly be it.

Why doesn't everyone want the lamest things for this game. Third person? Yuck. Bots? Lol there's 64 real people on the map. Preset loadouts? Boring. The system in BF4 allowed for enough freedom but classes still had roles to play. The modern advances (regen, sprint etc.) became popular because people like them and they make the game play better.

I'm a man with simple tastes. I want a Star Wars shooter where I can play as a stormtrooper and blast the rebels in my AT-AT. And I want it to look gorgeous and play well. The archaic ass game mechanics can stay in their own time.

Damn this game has me so hype hopefully DICE delivers oh and I'm pretty sure they'll have some sort of third person mode doesn't Battlefield already have that.

Bots should be an option no doubt about it. Surely there will be a single player campaign and a Galactic Conquest mode - that will have bots. Preset loadouts can make for a more balanced, enjoyable shooter too. Look at Halo 2 in comparison to 4.

Weapon attachments, check.

DICE will make this look amazing. Just the thought of an epic Star Wars battle has me hyped.

By that statement I'm assuming they're not actually going to run every mode on every map.

Yeah I actually think it can be taken a few ways. As some others have pointed out, some of the BF maps that seemed like a good idea were ruined by being clearly designed around Rush mode.

I think it would be fantastic if they did maps solely for specific game mode or game mode types, but I can't imagine they would sink the resources and development time into that.
