IGN Reviews Growlanser Generations

8.6

The wait is over. And yes, it was worth it.

It's a good thing that Growlanser Generations includes both The Sense of Justice and The Dual Darkness and both games are individually weakened in opposite regards. So while Growlanser II may boast a superior battle system that allows for better battles, more interesting levels, and easier world navigation, Growlanser III counters it with a much better storyline, a tougher challenge, and a better overall presentation.

Taken together, however, Growlanser Generations is great fun and can offer diehard role-players anywhere from 60-100 hours of entertainment. Even better is the fact that it maintains a rather unique feel when compared to the rest of the games in the genre and makes us wish that somebody somewhere will bring the first and fourth installments of Growlanser to our shores rather soon (Mastiff, Atlus, and Working Designs, I'm looking at you).

No, only the first Growlanser was PSOne, which isn't included.

Think he was making a joke.

Be interesting to see how these games do. Seems it's getting generally favorable reviews, at least.

DFS.

Well, now that it's nearly out, it's time to wait for WD's next announcement. Let's hope that they bring over Zero Wing:

I think the next game they're bringing out is Goemon... I heard that SCEA rejected it but then they resubmitted it, and SCEA allowed it. But I'm pretty curious to see what WD has available next... Growlanser is getting so much play from me over break, I can't wait.

That was absolutely funny. Even though the original script has become a classic all in it's own. Looks like we get two great RPG's this month. KOTOR 2, and GG.
+1 Sale

That was the funniest thing I've seen in some time. I'd buy that Zero Wing...

It's been out as early as Monday. Seems extremely popular from what the clerks have said in my area.

It sold quite well at our store for a RPG. After looking in the collector's version I'd think you'd have to be a complete idiot to buy that version, but to each their own. At least there's a choice.

Just got my Deluxe version. I appreciate the work Working Designs puts into the packaging, but good gravy the glossy boxes take fingerprints so easily, and look awful because of it. If anyone wants impressions, I'll post some, but they'll have to be this weekend.

Please post some expressions. The ebgames near me has some left, in excellent condition(gamestop near me had only one with a damaged box). I am probably going to get it, but impressions would help. Does it come with a LE strat guide?

No, there's no strategy guide at all unfortunately. I looked. Will WD release one eventually? I dunno, Vic's on here, he could probably answer that. But after the AtL SG fiasco, I doubt it.

It's really a ballsy sort of release.

I mean, in the scheme of things, just picking up an anime-like RPG like this on opening day for 50 dollars really puts you in a niche to begin with. It's a special form of nerddom that's both endearing and right at home with the heart of gaming (don't get me wrong, I salute you!).

But to pay 90 for an ugly watch, and a ring and chain that you pray aren't even worn to weekly D&D sessions...that's a whole 'nother level of stigmatization. I can only imagine that at the last moments the soundtrack was offered at the expense of some sort of plot significant man-skirt.

Excelsior!

No, I find that it makes an excellent gift for a gamer, and the watch isn't ugly, not from the pictures that I have seen. I also read that it comes with hardcover manuals, which is awesome.

It's not a ballsy sort of release. You do realize this is the 4th release like this for Working Designs? There is a market for Working Designs and each time they release an RPG, the money they make off of it funds their next project. It's people like you who sort of piss me off because we rarely get limited edition anything in terms of video games, shit like this gets released often in Japan. I salute WD for building a fan base with their quality products.

Like you've never purchased something completely impractical before, because you enjoy collecting things related to it. Give me a break. Clearly you're too cool for stupid limited edition freebies. Damn, I need to practice to be like you.

Don't they usually do really in depth strategy guides that come out a month or two after the game is out? It makes sense since you can really pack in detail that way and WD loves the detail.

They usually do, but the last time they did a larger compilation, Arc the Lad, they broke it up into two parts and ended up not releasing the book based on the third game at all. It took them too long, and they didn't feel it was worth it or whatever. I don't know if they convinced them not to do guides anymore, or if they even have the income to put out a book and a game at this point.

Vic should really answer this, although I fear for the answer. The second volume for the Arc The Lad Collection was cancelled, so I wonder if they plan to do anymore in depth guides.

I don't mind limited edition stuff as I think it is cool. But in this case isn'tt this freebie 40 bucks more?

Anyway, isn't this game sort of a test for WD? I don't want to say something incorrect so if Vic Ireland sees this he can correct me. I thought I read him say that splitting up the release into regular and special edition is a test. And if this doesn't work we may just see special edition releases again but it'll be only $69.99 (Price point inbetween both the regular and special edition).

He'll probably correct you anyway, since you spelled his name wrong.

But yeah, he did say that they broke it up this time because of demand for a less expensive regular edition and, as a result, they had to up the price of the LE. I also know that the Deluxe Edition is extremely limited, at least for the first shipment, at EB. Only a few thousand, we've been told. I'm not sure if they'll continue to produce them or not, but it could wind up a pretty nice collector's item.

Actually ballsy would be any of the hundreds of "deluxe" Japanese games that feature the regular game, a bandanna or cloth, and some postcards for $118USD. It's very common for Japanese deluxe editions to suck WAY worse than anything we've released and usually at a price 50-100% more.

Care to address the strategy guide query?

And after eating a ticket today, I won't be able to afford the latter. It would've looked nice next to the PS1 Lunars, too. :(

I'm definately getting the standard, though. This is the kind of stuff you reward, (to fund all the ideas in the thread Shouta linked to.)

Well, I know you wanted the man-skirt, Soul4ger, I was talking in general. And facetiously. It's far from "freebies" and much closer to a Japanese release, indeed.
