Not my fight but FFX, FFXI, FFXII, MGS2, RE4, Silent Hill 2, Shadow of the Colossus, DMC 3, Okami. Those are the only real contenders I can think of honestly. Not sure where I'd rank them, but at least a few are top 50 for me personally.

I love BOTW. I am not sure if it is the best ever, but definitely in my top 10, and I've been playing since the NES era.

PS2 came out in 2000. Which means there are obviously zero games for PS2 that came out before 2000.
God of War 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Okami, Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 3.
Should they all be in a top 50 across every video game ever in time and space? I don't know, but they are all definitely more than valid candidates.
These are all very "safe" picks that I doubt many people would argue against. If we talk personal preferences, I have more I could suggest.

I always give second chances and let developers learn from their past mistakes.
I will watch some lets plays and hope for some improvement.
I played ALTTP, OoT, TP, A Links Awakening and other Zelda games up to 10 times over my life.... Breath of the Wild is for me like Wind Waker - you play it once and then you never touch it again.

I didn't mean games on the PS2 that came before 2000, obviously, I meant games in general before 2000 combined with PS2 era games. The PS3/360 era has more modern games.
God of War 2 likely has a chance since it was developed so late and because the top-down style of melee combat hasn't been done too much, so it's not that outdated.
Metal Gear 2 plays like a mummy, the story still hits but the stiff movement with those camera angles and the outdated combat system hold it way back by today's standard.
San Andreas plays like an arcade game at this point, just point a weapon and use the lock on. It's extremely rudimentary, and open-world games have advanced a lot with A.I. and open-world design since then. It's far behind the times. The shooting in that game is horrendous by today's standard.
Okami still works because of it's uniqe nature, I havn't played it in a while, but I wonder if the painting mechanic, slighty empy worlds and visuals hold up today. But maybe.
Pro Skater 2 has been affected by all the skate games that came after. It's influence is clear, but if you play it now, it doesn't stand out from the crowd or anything like that. It plays very similar to a lot of other skate games.
So to sum it up, God of War 2 and Okami still work because there havn't been that many games that you can compare them too, they havn't been that outdated, but I can't see them closing in on a top 50. You could make a top 50 consisting only of the games from the last 5 years and it would be pretty insane.

I loved Final Fantasy X back in the day, and have a lot of nostalgia for it, but it doesn't hold up with it's slow movement, extremely simplistic animations and slow combat. I havn't played XII (yet) so I can't judge it.
I adresed MGS2 and Okami in my other post above.
Resident Evil 4 is likely the biggest contender for any top 50 list, but there are some very awkward parts of the game towards the end where the aiming is annoying as shit and enemies take too many hits. I would have to play it again to really make up my mind of where I think it would sit, I'm not sure.
Shadow of the Colossus controls has aged a lot, it was sort of bad when it come out, but by todays standard a lot of the jumping and climbing sections are bad and annoying because of the stiff nature of the protagonist. Some of the bosses has aged a bit too, I noticed it a lot in the remake, some of them didn't feel as great as they did back in the day, likely because many other games have had large bosses at this point.
I havn't played DMC 3, don't know what to think, I don't know if it has some of those annoying camera angles of it's previous entires that stick out like a sore thumb in today's landscape.

We're starting to see more games take notes from BotW. In fact, HZD2 took notes from BotW and you can now climb over rocks and you have a glider in HZD2! The devs definitely took these items from Botw, no question. Botw ruined HZD for a lot of people so the devs are trying to go toe to toe with BotW in the sequel. And I'm pretty sure the devs from Ghosts of Tsushima admitted to taking notes from BotW as well. You are simply comparing the one game that completely aped BotW including the mechanics and art. You gotta look a little deeper. BotW's impact can be seen in a lot of games.

Final Fantasy VII is way up at 98. Final Fantasy VI is #44.
I just played Final Fantasy IX for the first time last year and it absolutely still holds up and should be on the list. Phenomenal game.

Their staff is skewing younger now and so this list has some major recency bias.
Hades, for example, is a terrific game. But 13th best EVER? Come on. It's just fresh in their memory. No way it's even top 50 if they do this again in 5 years.

I agree with this, but I think it mostly applies to the early 3d consoles (circa 1994 to 2006). The 16-bits, if you have a good upscaler, hold up just fine. Super Mario World deserves #2, one of the few they got right.

TV Asahi just put BOTW as their #1 a few days ago, then IGN "updates" their stuff to also put BOTW as their #1? Seems like riding a trend IMO.
But anyway, these "Best of All Time" lists are generally pretty flawed and read more like popularity contests. I think if people just remember these are subjective opinions by editors tho, then that's okay.

I mean gaming is art so there is no such thing as "objectively" best or greatest games. I think BotW is a very good game that is nowhere near top tier and I'll never understand it's massive hype, but IGN can think whatever they want because it's all opinions

I never get upset about lists like these, but I do find the complete lack of music games surprising, especially given the new criteria. Almost anyone I know who pulls out a Rock Band or Guitar Hero game today still finds it very fun. Personally, I'd put Rock Band 3 in the Top 25.
And I know it's old, but almost everyone I know still enjoys Galaga when playing it, yet it's completely missing.
(Oh, yeah: And Tetris should not be that far down the list. Tetris Effect and Tetris 99 should illustrate that that game is amongst the most enduring of all time.)

Not only that, I bet games I personally really enjoy like Cosmology of Kyoto, Phantasy Star IV, Outrunners, Illusion of Gaia, Little Big Adventure 2, Dodonpachi etc. are also missing from that list. System Shock 2 is not even in the Top 40 (83? Really?), despite the impact it had and that there's very few FPS/sim survival horror titles like it even today (let alone up to its level of quality). Hell, there's not a single Sega game on the list whatsoever, past or present. Guess Metacritic is a lie...for several times the past decade huh? Also didn't see any fighting games present at all, not even Street Fighter 2. I mean it only reinvigorated the entire arcade industry in the early '90s, but who cares right?
These lists are generally very console-orientated so lots of arcade games get left out. That, and they're also generally focused on just a few genres, nowhere near the full breadth of the medium. And they also tend to have a strong bias towards more recent games. I can understand that to some extent, but there are a lot of classics and very creative older games just completely ignored due to it.
IGN has a Japanese department. But otherwise I meant it mostly tongue-in-cheek.

First of all I disagree with your premise ; that there is a quantifiable top 50 that I could list. Too many good games would be left out.
I could maybe do a top 10 or 20 and list the absolute greats. But more than that and something would be left out for sure.
I have far, far too many games in my collection, so a top 50 is almost as absurd as tacking on a numbered score to a video game.
More so than your ps2 diss (And yes for example god of war 2 shits on current walkfest movie lite gow from the top of mount olympus) I find it laughable that you claim many of today's garbage, derivative, checklist gameplay open world games, or indie 8 bit hipster trash, or online kiddie fests are better than classics that came out before 2000. It's almost like as I said earlier ; you're one of those that molds to the current day and you'll be saying today's games are dated crap in 20 years regardless if they are or not.

There is no "greatest game of all time". Its nonsensical when games are so varied that depending on individual tastes you could create multiple credible lists without any crossover of titles between them.
You can sorta get away with it when you limit inclusion to a single calendar year, but stretching beyond that... you're never going to get remotely close to a consensus opinion of even a top 10.

The new GOW is different than the old one, because Kratos has a kid. 1st one was all about vengeance. Now, he has a purpose in life. His son. Its a new emotion for Kratos. That is why, you aren't that much in to that game.
I miss the old kratos, but its time we let him rest. He kicks ass, but he does it for the purpose of his kid.

Same walk along sequences, son is like ellie, too much annoying dialog, over the shoulder combat etc. etc.

Look at how far cry and assasin creed look now. Its all because people bought them too much. We are stuck with that formula.

Again - subjective opinions. I'd put GTA5 ahead of 4 and san Andreas/vice city any day. Vice city and San Andreas don't hold up because of their controls imo. 5 is ridiculously more advanced and better playing than them.
Ocarina of time wouldn't be in my top 30 either.

I am little bit sad, that you arent even considering ocarina as one of the greatest game of all time. Honestly that game, is 10x much better than BOW. Especially with graphics at that time.

Because it shows, your action can affect the charecter. That was peak of gaming. Making your charecter fat, without actually changing their model is ground breaking for video games.

That's great, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the game being one of the best of all time. Again, games being groundbreaking doesn't mean they're the best (and we disagree that that is groundbreaking anyway, but that's not really the point).
I loved those GTAs back in the day, but if you go back and play them now they're not really very good. You're constantly fighting the controls to do anything. Many old games that were the pinnacle back then have not held up with time.
