Metroid Prime 4 is finally here, making this the perfect time to look back on this incredible sci-fi action franchise and the tons of great games it's given us.

These are the ten best Metroid games ever made.

00:00 Intro
00:34 Metroid II: Return of Samus
01:53 Metroid
03:26 Metroid: Samus Returns
04:37 Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
05:51 Metroid Fusion
07:00 Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
08:08 Metroid: Zero Mission
09:11 Metroid Dread
10:32 Metroid Prime
11:54 Super Metroid

It really sucks that Prime 2 and 3 aren't available for modern consoles, especially with 4 about to be released.

When Nintendo released the Prime 1 remaster, I was hoping they would follow it up with 2 & 3 before releasing Prime 4. There's a whole generation of gamers who will pick up Prime 4 having never played the original Prime trilogy.

No AM2R, I would've put that high on the list and Dread as much as I really liked it shouldn't be above Prime 2, I think Prime 3 should be much lower. I haven't played the original 2 or 1 though so I can't speak for them.

I think I just wouldn't put the Primes and the 2D ones together on the same list. If I did I'd feel like I was doing a disservice to one or the other. With both I feel like its so hard to say whether Zero Mission or Super is better, its very tempting to say Super but then I think I just liked the gravity more in ZM (and AM2R), but then Super had my favourite secrets, some really cunty ones. Even after I looked up a couple of ZM ones I just could never perform the moves even on runahead emulation where theres no lag it feels like, maybe I'm just rubbish though.

Yes I wish I could've played through 2 with 1080p/2160p upscale and locked 60fps at least after Prime Remastered.

for me all metroid are damn fine game, cept understandable other m
but at least new metroid is better than no new metroid

i like metroid 2, which is kind of more open approach and had set semi linear goals such as hunting metroids and keep 'em in check.
i wish there will be more things like that in the future

Top 10 of a franchise with barely more than 10 games. The ones outside the "top 10" are simply the ones not even worth mentioning in the first place.

That said, I generally agree with the placements. I prefer the side scrolling games to the Prime series. The franchise is pretty great (outside the omitted crap).

Prime remastered is king of the hill for me. One of Nintendos best games ever up there with ocarina of time.

I feel like Prime 2 never gets the respect it deserves. I don't think it's quite as good as Prime 1, but it is a game that I enjoy more every single time I play it. My biggest issue with the game when it came out was that it wasn't just Prime 1 again - the light and dark worlds and downright oppressive atmosphere, along with the difficulty, was more of a shift than I'd really expected. Initially, I was hoping for more environments like Phendrana Drifts, and that's just not the direction Prime 2 wants to go in.Taking that game on its own merits, it's incredibly successful. Everything just works. The world feels super dangerous, and the atmosphere is so incredibly well done. The music's also killer. The design is absolutely phenomenal. For me, it's easily 3rd place, after Super Metroid and Prime 1.

There's a ton of picks I can disagree with, but high Super placement always gets a big thumbs down from me. As one the game's biggest haters on GAF, I think the thing's a dinosaur, eclipsed by its franchise brethren and by just about everyone else in the past 30 years since it came out.

As is tradition when Metroid tier lists are discussed, I'll drag out my own:

1) AM2R
2) Zero Mission
3) Prime 2
4) Prime
5) Fusion
6) Dread
7) Metroid II
8) Prime 3
9) Super
10) Samus Returns
11) Other M
12) Hunters
13) Metroid

Dread is way too high in that list.
Art is bad, music is terrible, the game is super linear… is that even a Metroid game ? Also the game is horrendous on replays with the robot phases…

The only good things are the new powers and the boss fights. Rest is shit really.

Surprisingly solid listing imo, very few I'd swap around.

I really hope they're still planing to give them the remaster treatment.

Given how much better the character models look in the new engine Metroid Prime 3 especially would be amazing to see get a facelift. Not to mention seeing a updated Elysia/SkyTown..

I've only ever played one Metroid game.
Super Metroid on a Super Famicom (and a CRT TV) a few months ago.

I never had a SNES back in the day. I was stuck on Master System and never had a 16-bit console.

The new Prime game doesn't look interesting to me though. The original Prime never even interested me back in the day (I do still have my old Gamecube) but that original would've been good for its time. The new one looks dated to me.

metroid is a very successful series, everyone have different opinions about it and to me that means every game in the series is loved, except for Other M.

Other M is my 3rd, possibly 2nd, favorite game in the series only beaten by Super Metroid and at the moment Prime 1. But considering how much more I replay Other M over Prime that might not stand.

Of course I hate pretty much every game in the series outside of the original trilogy, Prime 1, and Other M so I'm an extreme outlier.

11. Metroid: Zero Mission
10. Metroid Fusion
9. Metroid Dread
8. Metroid
7. Metroid: Samus Returns
6. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
5. Metroid Prime
4. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
3. Metroid II: Return of Samus
2. Metroid : Other M
1. Super Metroid

Give me Zero Mission, AM2R, and Super Metroid and you can keep the rest.
AM2R.... dude. I remember when that dropped. I don't know how I came across word of it at the time, but that led me to the OG distro... before it was taken down via cease and desist. A few days after I snagged it, it came down and I remember people scrambling to try and find it. All is not lost I imagine because the internet finds a way.

I remember thinking it was just some fan thing that wasn't going to be good... no idea why, but was just like this is some passion project (that I know little about) that's gonna be what it is but not great. Was kind of like a holy shit moment for me because of the low expectation and actual quality mismatch. What a fucking treat.

Should really be recognized as one of the greats and I think it is from looking at peoples responses here.

It's better than the official remake (I think there's one) by Nintendo. Not sure if that's an unpopular opinion but, yea.... really enjoyed it.

I think my list would go something like:

  1. Super Metroid
  2. Metroid Prime
  3. AM2R
  4. Dread
  5. Fusion

Then the rest in really any order. Love a good Metroid game, but I feel like those 5 would give you the best representation of the different approaches to it.

I appreciate Other M too for being so bold and unafraid to just do its thing. Wouldn't go back to it personally, but I respect it.

I was about to say something about the bottom 5 not being right (by bottom 5 I mean the first half of the video because OP listed them backwards), but then I realized everything below the top 5 doesn't really matter too much.

It's obvious AM2R would have bumped down MP3 if they were allowed to officially list it.

I pretty much agree entirely with their list, with the caveat that if Super Metroid is number 1, then it has to be the modernization mod that updates its dated controls. The OG controls are kind of ass.

Super is still #1

I usually place it at #1 or #2 on my all time best game list as well. The Primes aren't even on my top 10. Still interested in Prime 4 since it's been so long since the last one.

This is kind of a easy list for me since most games are great
  1. Metroid Prime
  2. Super Metroid
  3. Metroid Dread
  4. Metroid Fusion
  5. Metroid Prime 2
  6. Metroid: Zero Mission
  7. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
  8. Metroid: Samus Returns
  9. Metroid
  10. Metroid Prime: Hunters
  11. Metroid Prime Pinball
  12. Metroid II: Return of Samus
  13. Metroid : Other M
Only the last one is actually a "bad" game and Metroid 2 has aged poorly even though it was good at release

My hopes for Prime 4 have been lowered after the last videos - I stll hope it slots in before Prime 3 or even Prime 2. I cannot see it crack top 3 just going by the "style" of the dialogue
