IGN Top 100 Animated Series

Gushing about Batman: TAS isn't something trendy or new, people have always posted extremely positive comments about that show, and I've been on GAF for like 8 years.

It was just a damn good show. I'm not much of a Batman fan, but I really loved it myself (and the two new movies, of course).

The list is a joke really. Pokemon should be higher because it was a phenomenon and everyone watched it pretty much.

Naruto however is an example of shit and responsible for naruto headband wearing fucks.

Deathnote? Well there are at least 20 better anime shows out there.

Most of the shit are popularity contests and does not actually reflect the quality of animation.

You have other people in this thread saying Pokemon shouldn't be on there at all.

Sure, but again, it's all opinions. So it's a little silly to call the list a joke.

Most of the shit are popularity contests and does not actually reflect the quality of animation.

I don't think that's true. If it were, Family Guy would be higher than The Simpsons. As of now, it's more popular. That is today's Simpsons.

And really, no one gives a shit about Rocky and Bullwinkle.

This really is just a list that some editors got together and decided on. I don't think it's anything more than that.

But that's who made the list and that's who they made the list for. Why does everything has to be culturally relevant? Don't get me wrong the ones he named are classic and have inspired many great filmmakers, but this list is just for fun and for a big audience. I do believe most people haven't even heard of Hedgehog in the Fog. That's not to say it doesn't deserve its place, but in this particular list it would not belong.

Personally I see a lot more lists for 80's and 90's cartoons like this than anything else on the Internet, but I guess that's to be expected. I must admit I haven't sen the top 2 of that fancy list myself. :lol

I watched a lot of the cartoons in the IGN list as a kid and liked them, but watching many of them now are just downright shit. Nostalgia clouds judgment I guess.

If you want a list to really debate about though, watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8BIrtBhOd8 (part 1 of 21, it's loooong)

This is a list voted by the British public on Channel 4 back in 2005. Channel 4's website had 125 cartoons you could pick 10 of, and you could also write down three they didn't list. Either way the list is flawed to hell mainly because they split Looney Tunes into about 10 different entries (Bugs Bunny, Looney Tunes, Daffy Duck, Road Runner, Tweety, and more). That and most of the list is like this one in that it features old British stuff that people are nostalgic for (even shit like BOD), and some of the entries are just plain weird (Queer Duck? Return of Overfiend? Really?) Still, it's an entertianing list that has a decent mix of everything. No Batman though, cry more.

simpsons now has more mediocre/bad seasons than good ones, but that doesn't change the fact that 1-9 make for the best comedy ever

1. The Simpsons (Series 2-9)

Fixed

fake edit - A quick glance would confirm I am not the only one who stopped buying the boxsets before it hit double figures. Series 10 had a couple of decent episodes, but a quick glance at Wikipedia says that those ones were all hold-overs from Series 9 anyway.

Good to see Batman:TAS up there as well.

real edit: Actually looking over series 9 there are some real stinkers in that series. Armin Tamzarian springs to mind, as well as the Power Bar episode. Not as bad as the episodes they put out now, but they definitely mark the start of the Simpsons moving away from family based sitcom to 'We've ran out of real storylines, LET'S GET SILLY!".

Haven't really watched the simpsons since maybe season 7 or 8, but has it now gone the Family Guy route of comedy? If so, "Sell-Out!"

The Simpsons started to get 'surreal' around about series 10, when it moved away from nice little stories about family, or the residents of Springfield, and moved into episodes which dealt with Bart becomes a champion jockey, and Homer ends up in a magical tree inhabited by evil leprechauns who are all jockeys themselves...... yeah......

I like Family Guy's irreverant humour, because from the very first episode that is what it set out to do. The Simpson's didn't, and to see them go down that route has been a sad state of affairs.

I'm glad to see Home Movies came in at 28. One of my favorite shows. :)

Also, I am genuinely shocked that Shin-Chan did not make that list. It's one of the longest running animated series in all of Japan. I completely agree with the Top 3 though.

At the 2003 Laputa Animation Festival, 140 animation artists and film critics from around the world were asked to list the 20 best animated productions. These lists were then combined into one with 150 titles on it. The list was widely reported in the Russian press because places #1 and #2 were taken by Yuriy Norshteyn's films "Hedgehog in the Fog" and "Tale of Tales". It's obviously a much better list than IGN's.
You know the competition is tough when Laputa can only make #19 at the Laputa Animation Festival.

Somehow I knew The Simpsons would be #1. Having Family Guy in the top 10 is bullshit though, but not unexpected. They really should've rated Futurama higher though. Show was fucking brilliant.

i think i'll stick with the channel 4 top 100 cartoons list. king of the hill is below family guy on this one, which just makes me weep tears of fucking blood.

Johnny Bravo doesn't deserve to be on the list at all. I can understand that there is a market for Power Puff Girls and the rest of the crap, but who the fuck likes Johnny Bravo? Pure garbage.

And where the fuck is Earth Worm Jim?

FMA and Rugrats are WAYYYY too low, happy to see Batman: TAS so high, Family Guy is too high--that is, Family Guy shouldn't be on the list at all, and I'm bummed that Doug and My Life as a Teenage Robot aren't on the list. =/

fuckin' aye, man.

and i agree with those who say HOME MOVIES earned its spot. i just watched "renaissance" a couple of nights ago and it cracked my ass up. mcgurk is one of the best, most original animated characters ever created. his unique combination of fluctuating between complete egotism and self-consciousness, drunkenness, and hilarious line delivery is unmatched.

I would daresay most people have been affected by shows like Looney Tunes and The Flintstones. I've never even heard of "Hedgehog in the Fog" or "Tale of Tales".

Maybe they shouldve named the list top 100 most important animated series instead.

No Recess? Really? If we're going to put on the ol' nostalgia goggles for shows like Todd McFarlane's Spawn and The MAXX, let's at least get the best Saturday morning cartoons sorted out.

I haven't watched Recess in a long time. That was such a good show.

Shit list...

OP would be no 1...monster, berserk and many others should be in there....

I do enjoy the Simpson's but it burned out along time ago...and lacking any sort of interesting narrative, I would give other series preemincence over it... so much repetition, too much deja vu... still enjoy it, won't watch it again

Shit. I forgot about Recess. Man, I even watched that show in my late teens.

I came in here to say that "if Batman: TAS isn't number one, the list is CRAP!" knowing full well I would accept anywhere from 1-3. Good to see I wasn't disappointed.

I love every show on the top five, and the little kid in me is happy to see Muppet Babies at 31. I wish that show was on DVD, but I would only imagine it's hard to put on DVD with all the copyrighted material they showed. I am surprised to see Batman at number 2, I thought it would be very high on the list, but not that high.

And what the hell at people thinking The Simpsons started to suck at season 6?
