IGN: ZombiU Video Preview

Secret contender for game of the year? Maybe not, but it looks damn hot.

What are the other contenders atm? (in terms of the big releases)
Kid Icarus/Journey will no doubt lead to a bit of a fight. Halo 4 when thats released (dependent on quality) appears to be a contender I suppose.

Not going to lie.... slightly hyped after that video... too bad my wife has a deep phobia of zombies <_< means I won't get to play it.

Of games coming out soon? Only Assassin's Creed III. Maybe Mario if it turns out to be amazingly good, as well as AC Liberation and Paper Mario Sticker Star.

For those "controls people" who had trouble with the public builds most of us played, well, you should be glad to hear that that has been completely solved according to Rich. He outlines it as a key issue of the game in earlier builds and says that it's totally gone now and they're solid.
It definetly is looking like it.
Since hell even a good chunk of Wii U buyers seem to be overlooking it.
While it looks great and I think it will be great, I am just not in the market for another zombie game right now.

Some of those shadows look decidedly low rez.

Talking of shadow. I'm trying to detect if the zombies are self shadowing. I can't find a single frame that shows this.

Um....not sure I like this. Totally takes the fun out of looting. I don't want to play a game scared as crap that I'm going to die and loose everything.

"Cool new shotgun!!" Surprise attack...die.

The game actually has an interesting risk/reward system in the form of the safe house that you visit, in which you can store any loot that you find in the event that something does happen to your current survivor, making it available for future survivors to use, but obviously you can't bring with you what you decide to bin. You have to weigh how well you play versus how much you need those items.

This kind of freedom, or restrictions is what makes the game amazing. It forces you to plan ahead, play smart and if all fails, give the next survivor a fair chance.

I want to believe.

Have not pre-ordered this yet. Hoping some good reviews from several sites pop up before launch so I can snatch it. But for now... visually, it looks good, but I'm not convinced it's worth my $$$ yet.

This definitely looks awesome. I don't think it'll end up being another RS situation, because, while fans hyped up Red Steel, impressions were always tepid. These impressions have been uniformly positive.

Red Steel 3 needs to happen though. The second was my favorite-playing action game last gen.

I want this game to be good, but I'm still waiting on reviews + GAF impressions. Not a great looking game, but the concept is intriguing.

I have to agree that dynamic lighting/shadows aren't that great as well. If done better they'd add so much to the overall look and atmosphere.

you played this latest build at that event?

Yes, the embargo period ended this morning. Though this was my first time playing it, I never tried it before at the previous cons and events.

What I know for certain is that I came away very impressed with it.

Apart from so so graphics, Gamekult says the game is awesome:

Smells good.

Red Steel was a launch game but also was a new control benchmark in Wii and sometimes graphically shocking as well. Is ZombiU following the same path on the Wii U? How important was for you to show the Wii U graphic horsepower?

FS said:
: Our main concern was not to showcase what the console can do in terms of graphics, but to create a compelling, original and coherent universe that serves our vision of survival in a zombie apocalypse.

I think they made the right decision

Is it true that this game is as difficult as Demon's/Dark Souls? Fuck that. I can't do hard games.

It will probably be too scary for me too.

There are 2 difficulty levels says jeuxvideo.com: chicken and normal.

They say the game is at a crossroad between Condemned and Metro 2033. The trnsion is always there, as well as the challenge. They loved it.

he's overwhelmingly positive, which makes me step back and go on the defensive. I want it to be great, but I'm skeptical of shit like this. Getting it day 1, but if my expectations are set by this video I'm just asking to be let down.

Yeah, the preview looks nice, but that tone in the voice... WTF ... Oh, it's IGN never mind.

Then I might get it if it turns out good and play on Chicken.

Most of my November income will be blown on Wii U. Goddamnit.

Seriously awesome way to do a review; especially the bit on L4D which at first I thought was unfair, but the multiplayer is sounding better than a cheaply added second thought; more like a fun wee mini-game.

Also:
The first time I was overrun by zombies, I panicked. While fumbling across the GamePad, I accidentally laid a proximity mine instead of equipping a new gun. My character was killed without a single enemy ever stepping foot on my accidental trap. Cut to next scene, I awake as my second character and proceed to where my first had fallen. I find his shambling former self, manage to take him out with a few deft swings of a cricket bat, and begin to loot his body. To do this, you have to focus your attention on the GamePad in order to move each individual item from the environment into your own personal pack. While this is happening, the camera on the television zooms out to reveal an environmental shot of what's going on while your character is rummaging -- time doesn't magically stop in ZombiU for players who want to manage their inventory. So while I tried to hurriedly regain my former items, I caught a slight movement out of the corner of my eye. I looked up at the television and noticed two things happen in the span of just a few seconds. First, a pair of zombies where coming towards my unsuspecting character. Immediately after that realization, one of them happened to step on my forgotten accidental mine, causing both to be turned into bite-sized chunks, and leaving me to continue surviving at my own accord.

Sounding awesome; the devs seem to really understand what makes these sorts of games tick.

no but i follow him on twitter. His tweets are non stop nintendo defense force

Really? Oh well its on twitter, so I await your links to his 'nintendo defense force'; shouldn't be hard for you to find since its so non-stop.

I don't know guys... to me this sounded almost like an advertisement. The game is obviously very rough visually, specially in the animations, and the movement of the camera in first person seems really robotic, kind of makes me wish this game could be played with the wii remote instead of with the gamepad.

Not very hopeful about this game. Could be a fun game but I don't see how this will end up being a killer app. I say it will be getting mostly 7s and 8s.

I don't really get that impression lol. Do you follow Colin Moriarty or Greg Miller?

yep, and i feel the same way about their ps opinions.

I like them all, but i do take some of their opinions with a grain of salt.

I think IGN's separation of the systems/reviewers is the wrong strategy.

If you can read french, this preview makes Zombi U a GOTY contender, and the use of the GamePad one of the most original thing happening in the medium in years: http://www.jeuxvideo.com/articles/0001/00017851-zombiu-preview.htm

I love how they compare it to the radar Marines have in Aliens, how you can send short radio waves to reveal the surroundings (and how it can catch birds too, adding to the tension).

Or how you can at some point use a machine gun and go crazy moving/shooting at everything at 360°.

I wasn't trying to be a dick...I like rich, i follow him on twitter for a reason. i just meant he is focused on nintendo 24/7. He is obv a fan. all of his tweets are about nintendo... and so when he says things like "RichIGN: Spent more time with Wii U today. Very impressed with some things. Hands tied for now - but not much longer. Sorry. Soon. =)" I don't know what that means for me, as someone who isn't as nintendo centric.

I think he is honest...as seen here "RichIGN: First (UK) Wii U ad hits. Not sure this is msging Nintendo needs. Too micro. Not grand like "Wii would like to play." http://t.co/EdQfGyzC"

BUt it is still dramatically more positive than i feel about the ad. I would just rather hear positive wiiu news out of a doubter, rather then someone whose lifeblood is nintendo.

does the journalist say that? or just your impression, I used google translate, and didnt see it mentioned, but I only skimmed it, Im trying to not to be spoiled by too much.

what does he say is so good about it?
Basically, how cleverly Ubisoft captured what was great about this genre. He says Zombi U makes your heart beat much faster than it should, it's really scary for various reasons, including the tremendous challenge, the fantastic sound, the smart use of the GamePad and the overall pacing.

No but it reads like that, as opposed to the game sounding like a 7 or a 8 (post I was responding to).
