IGNcube Hands-on on Revolution

I'm continually baffled how IGN manages to sucker people into getting Insider accounts every year when it's clear they're not really offering anything that doesn't manage its way into the "free" news outlets on the Internet within a few hours. If you want to talk about scams, Kabuki... :P

Now we know what's on the back for sure:

What about the back of the unit, though? Tech-nuts want to know, what kind of outputs does the machine have? Well, there are two USB outs and a power connection. The machine features no digital audio out. Instead, it boasts a single proprietary output for video and audio. The output looks exactly like the component out on GameCube.

I sorta don't get it either. Why does a software company give them an exclusive, for free, when all the insider exclusivity guarantees the software company, is a smaller audience.

Where's the benefit to anyone outside of IGN?

I wouldn't put too much stock in what ports are on it. Iwata said himself that it's just a prototype design (and he said the final hardware will be smaller, so there's no real telling what else will be changed).

Aren't IGN and Nintendo partners now or something?

Seems neat in design, can't say anything else really. A funny (to me) note though is how the only truly concrete thing known about Rev is the backwards compatibility while the one most nebulous thing about 360 is its backwards compatibility. Nothing to spin there, just interesting opposite details.

am I reading this wrong or does this mean its not connecting to a normal tv?

TEH GOGGLES!!!

So it sounds like Revolution will not support a/v cables from previous systems, that sucks.

This was a free article. :|

Anyway, I have Insider for the boards and media.

You're reading it wrong, it has a proprietary output, just like every other console has had proprietary outputs.

Which really just furthers my point. :P Media can be downloaded, in some cases, from the company websites directly, or for free with a Gamespot Basic account. It just seems excessive to pay for access to forums where apparently the money to register is in no way a kind of vetting process for the quality of the posts. :)

Insider for the boards!? Are you crazy!? Most of the guys are a bunch of retarded kids that won't shut up.

I don't go to IGN boards, but couldn't the same be said about any board, not just games....

What we've learned (that's new):

-The front flap is used for Revolution's proprietary 512MB memory cards.
-The back of the console is home to a proprietary video/audio output, a power input, and two USB ports.
-The console is made of the same glossy material as the PSP.
-Just simply put in either Revolution or GameCube discs and it'll read both.

In regards to the proprietary output, it'll have a similar connection to the GameCube video output. I'm guessing that Nintendo would prefer for people to buy their proprietary cables to get both Component and Digital Out for Revolution.

Think 360 people, proprietary outs lead to normal inputs.

So why did you call them proprietary? :lol

Because it's Nintendo.

Everything will be proprietary, from the memory cards down to the cables.

You really think Nintendo is going to miss the money train?

Think SD-Card Adaptor.

Will those cards be used for storing ROM's? It would be ok for NES/SNES games, but 512 is small when looking at some of the bigger N64 games.

Haven't finished reading te whole article but this part really cuaght my attention...

There's also a port that beams 3D images directly onto the viewer's retinas. Revolution!

The largest N64 game was 512 megabit right? 64 Megabytes. I guess it'd depend on what proportion of those was actually any good. And in any case, Iwata seemed to convey that the expansion would use SD media. So using 1GB etc isn't out of the question.

A lot of N64 games were around 10MB, some as low as 4/5.

So the Rev will have emulators for NES, SNES, N64 and GC in firmware? Or will they disitribute roms with emulators embedded? If the first is true, imagine the possibilites of a modchip and a DVD-r full of roms. Rev would be the Xbox of the next generation.

They could get around piracy for the most part if they distribute the ROMs in a new format (new header / executable info) and also make Rev hash em / check em out via the WiFi connection. Given that they may have to be downloaded in order to get them at all, that connection can be assured.

If they want to dole out commercial SD / memory cards with games on in normal shops, perhaps it would authenticate them in another way.

If they can't stop you from playing them (because we all know where there's a will and a soldering iron there's a way), then they might at least be able to ban you like they Xbox Live guys do.

Nowhere does it say propriety, just that thats where the cards go. Iwata specifically said you can add SD cards to expand the built in flash memory, no other way around that.

Trust me, you're an idiot if you think Nintendo will just let you buy your own SD Cards and miss out on making their own Memory Cards to profit off of.

If it was an SD Card slot-reader, IGN would have said so - just like they mentioned the USB slots.

I found this interesting.
The drive is not just illuminated, but surrounded by a sleek blue light, and it accepts both GameCube Optical Discs and new 12cm discs designed specifically for Revolution.
Maybe it won't be able to play DVD movies after all. Maybe it won't even be DVDs...
HD-DVD offshoot! OMG!

Rumor has it that with some sort of add-on (I'm guessing a remote), Revolution is capable of standard DVD playback.

Considering that the PS3 can handle CF I/II and SD in addition to Memory Stick Duos, I think all bets are off.

? It's not a "rumor" at all, again Iwata specifically said this at the press conference.
